RNCM Collection of Historic Musical Instruments
History The RNCM Collection of Historic Musical Instruments is essentially an amalgamation of two collections that had originally been assembled by Dr Henry Watson . Born in 1846 in Burnley, Lancashire, this organist, pianist, conductor and composer was appointed Professor of Choral Music at the Royal Manchester College of Music at its foundation in 1895. Self-taught as a musician, with a background as music-seller and piano-tuner, at the age of 34 he had enrolled as a music student at Cambridge University, obtaining his doctorate there in 1887. He was notable as a collector; when he presented his private library to the City of Manchester in 1902, it comprised some 16,700 volumes of music and books; he remained its 'Hon. Librarian' until his death in 1911. The Library, which is part of Manchester Central Library is known as the Henry Watson Music Library
    Dr Henry Watson

The catalogue published at this time listed a total of 159 instruments, comprising both a European section and a notable collection of ethnic instruments. The collection has been added to subsequently: notably by a second collection given to Manchester Corporation in 1910 by Dr Watson; and a collection belonging to Josiah Thomas Chapman (founder of a local firm of photographic chemists), given by his son, Mr J.C. Chapman in 1942.

Dr. Henry Watson and the History of the Library
Watson was first and foremost a self-taught musician and he never forgot his early struggle to acquire musical knowledge. With this in mind he made sure that his sizable collection of music and instruments would one day become available to the public. The Henry Watson Music Library was founded in 1902 and was initially based at 28/30 Chapel Street, Salford. Watson continued to look after the collection during his lifetime but ensured that after his death it would fall into the control of Manchester City Council. One of Watson's published songs, which has just been recorded on CD (see Watson bibliography for details). The library existed in a number of temporary locations before moving to its present home on the second floor of Manchester Central Library in 1947 when the opening ceremony was performed by Sir John Barbirolli from Sir John Barbirolli's opening speech ). Originally the library took up the whole of the space now shared with the Arts Library. Watson's collection of musical instruments is now at the
