You can see my great grandparents Samuel and Sarah Schantz as they looked like 80 years ago in 1920, in New York City in New York State in the United States, both at age 55. No words could ever fully describe or replace the images you see now. Could you ever imagine that the photographer or that my great grandparents would ever believe that their images would get seen 80 years later by you on the internet? I only wish I had the pictures of their parents, but I do know their names. Well here you can find their story which begins now.
Samuel Schantz, born July 2, 1865 in Dobromil, Galicia, Austria of his parents (My great great grandparents) Menachem Mendel Schancz and Jennie Schancz (nee Gold) and they came from Dobromil born there around 1830. They also had a daughter Esther, the sister of Samuel, born around 1865 in Dobromil and died between 1883 and 1891 in her 20's after marrying Leon Isser and having their son Elia on Feb 12, 1883. I currently have research going to see if Menachem Mendel Schancz had three brothers Louis, Jacob, and Hersh, also born in Dobromil around 1830. Please note that I also have a grandfather named Menachem Mendel Schantz. Sarah Greenstein Schantz born January 4, 1865 in Munkacs, Hungary of her parents (my great great grandparents) Abraham Greenstein and Golda Greenstein (nee Mirel) born in Munkacs, Hungary around 1830. They also had a son William Greenstein, the brother of Sarah.

Max Bruch, Kol Nidrei
Op. 47, Adagio on Hebrew Melodies for Violoncello and Orchestra This page contains some background information concerning Max Bruch's arrangement of Kol Nidrei. "There is hardly any other traditional Jewish tune that attracted so much attention from the composers of the last century. Innumerable are the arrangements for voice with piano, organ or violin accompaniment and violoncello obligato. We have the exalted melody prepared for choir and small orchestra. And last but not least is the concerto by Max Bruch. In the first bars of Beethoven's C# minor quartet, the opening theme of Kol Nidrei is recognizable. Thus has the music world come to consider this the most characteristic tune of the synagogue." (Idelsohn, The Kol Nidrei Tune, in: HUC Annual, Vol VIII-IX, 1931/2, p.493) Max Bruch himself wrote the following on Kol Nidrei, in a letter to cantor and musicologist Eduard Birnbaum (4 December 1889): "...I became acquainted with Kol Nidre and a few other songs (among others, 'Arabian Camel') in Berlin through the Lichtenstein family, who befriended me. Even though I am a Protestant, as an artist I deeply felt the outstanding beauty of these melodies and therefore I gladly spread them through my arrangement.

This is the story of a business motivated by a concern for humanity. It tells of composers: their personalities, their conflicts and their music. It describes how music is published through the story of two men, Dr Max Abraham and Dr Henri Hinrichsen and reveals how they developed the small music publishing company: C. F. Peters Leipzig, to achieve world wide stature.
O n 1 December , the publishers succeeded in acquiring piano and chamber music from Beethoven, in addition to the composer's First Symphony and Second Piano Concerto. Franz Anton Hoffmeister I n the business passed into the sole ownership of A. Kühnel when it was officially registered under the name 'Neuer Verlag des Bureau de Musique'. Forkel augmented the Bach series by the addition of the composer's Organ Works. Other additions comprised Gerber's Dictionary of Musicians and educational works for piano and violin written by celebrated Viennese/Parisian academicians of the day.
