Product Description
Abraham Geiger gave the Reform Movement in Judaism its intellectual stature and theoretical justification. He possessed rabbinic learning, profound interest in problems of theology and philosophy, a gift for exposition, and great earnestness. All these he enlisted in the service of Judaism -- a Judaism transplanted into the climate of nineteenth-century Germany. The reader will find here illustrations of Geiger's vewpoint as he wrote to friends, as he delved into the origins of teh Bible text, as he engaged in religious polemics, and as he addressed his congregation trying to draw them on the principles for which he labored. This English translation of the Geiger excerpts is surprisingly smoot. ... Read more

Product Description
In the physics of electromagnetism, the Abraham-Lorentzforce is the recoil force on an accelerating chargedparticle caused by the particle emitting electromagneticradiation. It is also called the radiation reactionforce. There are three important conditions that must be metfor the Abraham-Lorentz force expression to be valid. First, the formula for the Abraham-Lorentz force is applicable onlywhen the particle is traveling at non-relativisticvelocities (that is, much slower than the speed of light);the extension to relativistic velocities is known as theAbraham-Lorentz-Dirac force. Second, the motion of theparticle must be periodic (an assumption that is explicitlymade in the derivation of the force). Third, the formula isin the domain of classical physics, not quantum physics, andtherefore is not valid at distances of roughly the Comptonwavelength (?C ? 2.43 pm) or below. ... Read more

Excerpt: Renzo Piano (born 14 September 1937) is a world renowned Italian architect and recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, AIA Gold Medal, Kyoto Prize and the Sonning Prize. One admirer said the "serenity of his best buildings can almost make you believe that we live in a civilized world". His work also has its strong critics, to the point of infamously being called "a hodgepodge of tents, greenhouses and scaffolding." Piano was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1937 and maintains a home and office (Building Workshop) in the area. He was educated and subsequently taught at the Politecnico di Milano. He graduated from the University in 1964 and began working with experimental lightweight structures and basic shelters. From 1965 to 1970 he worked with Louis Kahn and with Makowsky. He worked together with Richard Rogers from 1971 to 1978; their most famous joint project is the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1977). He also had a long collaboration with the engineer Peter Rice. In 1981, Piano founded the "Renzo Piano Building Workshop", employing a hundred people with offices in Paris, Genoa, and New York. On 18 March, 2008, he became an honorary citizen of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina . Pianos recent expansion of the Art Institute of Chicago includes a 264,000 square foot wing with 60,000 square fee...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25946 ... Read more

Excerpt: David Joseph Bohm (20 December 1917 - 27 October 1992) was an American-born British quantum physicist who made contributions in the fields of theoretical physics, philosophy and neuropsychology, and to the Manhattan Project. Bohm was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to a Hungarian Jewish immigrant father and a Lithuanian Jewish mother. He was raised mainly by his father, a furniture store owner and assistant of the local rabbi. Bohm attended Pennsylvania State College (now The Pennsylvania State University), graduating in 1939, and then headed west to the California Institute of Technology for a year, and then transferred to the theoretical physics group under Robert Oppenheimer at the University of California, Berkeley, where he eventually obtained his doctorate degree. Bohm lived in the same neighborhood as some of Oppenheimer's other graduate students (Giovanni Rossi Lomanitz, Joseph Weinberg, and Max Friedman) and with them became increasingly involved not only with physics, but with radical politics. Bohm gravitated to alternative models of society and became active in organizations like the Young Communist League, the Campus Committee to Fight Conscription, and the Committee for Peace Mobilization all later branded as Communist organizations by the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover. During World War II, the Manhattan Project mobilized much of Berkeley's physics research in the effort to produce the first atomic bomb. Though Oppenheimer had asked Bohm to work with him at Los Alamos (the top-secret laboratory established in 1942 to design the bomb), the head of the Manhattan Project, General Leslie Groves...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=186234 ...
