Applied anthropologists are professional consultants and on-board problem solvers in many fields that require a theoretical and practical understanding of human cultural behavior or human biology. They work in advertising, market development, health care, cultural resource management, educational research, business management, economic development, migrant settlement, forensic analysis, and many other areas. They utilize the research techniques and background information of the anthropological sciences in practical settings where they also develop special anthropological approaches to problem solving.

Real Solutions for Real Problems
Staff Philosophy
The complexity of social interactions, caused by increased inter-cultural and cross-cultural engagements, requires new and innovative strategies for program development and technology transfer. Organizations need additional ideas, expertise and experienced personnel to increase their prospects for success in designing strategies for reaching multi-cultural populations. The staff of the ACARC use applied holistic approach to resolve issues caused by misunderstandings resulting from differences in cultural communication and behavior.
Anthropologists study the differences and similarities, both biological and cultural, in human populations in all periods, and in all parts of the world. Few, if any, other professional or academic approaches offer a comprehensive examination, understanding and methodology to address social issues and human diversity questions. Anthropologists have provided solutions for improving people's lives, and have participated in monitoring the activities of others, e.g., analyzing program interventions; analyzing environmental constraints, both social and biological; examining political structures, economic or subsistence influences; religious constraints, or external influences. While the foundation model used derives from anthropology, specialists from a wide variety of disciplines will be brought together, as necessary, to make the Center's activities holistic.

Anthropologists at Work:
Responses to Student Questions About Anthropology Careers
Surveys show that students have many of their questions about the nature of professional work in anthropology answered by viewing the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology's video entitled Anthropologists at Work Careers Making a Difference , Like all useful educational tools, however, this video program about the day-to-day work environments, arenas of inquiry, and practical applications of anthropology raises as many questions as it answers. This supplement is designed to provide answers to those questions students have raised most frequently after viewing the video. The following questions are answered in this document: 1. How great is the demand for practicing anthropologists? Are there jobs? 2. If I am interested in working as a practicing anthropologist, what academic degrees do I need to get? 3. Are there universities that offer training programs in practicing anthropology? 4. What courses should Take? What skills would it be good to acquire while I am in college? ... 12. Can students join NAPA (The National Association for the Practice of Anthropology)? There is also a bibliography of further readings on careers in applied anthropology at the end of this document.

The Committee on Anthropology in Environmental Planning was a loosely-knit group of professional anthropologists interested in sustainable community development and resolving disputes over cultural and environmental resource management options. The Committee published a Newsletter three times a year, whose recent issues are archived here. In 1998, the Committee was organizationally transformed into the Environmental Anthropology Topical Interest Group of the Society for Applied Anthropology . The Topical Interest Group continues to publish a newsletter: HUMAN ENVIRONMENTS which is available online at no charge. To be put on the newsletter mailing list, contact the Newsletter Editor, Rick Stepp The Topical Interest Group also operates a List-Serve, AmbientNet : 1. Send a message to the listserve facility located at NCSU. The message should be sent to: LISTSERV@listserv.ncsu.edu 2. After you have subscribed, you will be on the Ambientnet listserve. In order to send messages to our listserve, you must use a slightly different address. That address is as follows: ambientnet@listserv.ncsu.edu Any message you send will automatically be forwarded to everyone who is subscribed. Currently, we have about 70 members subscribed. We would very much like to increase that number. If you would like to see who is subscribed. Send a message to: ambientnet@listserv.ncsu.edu. The message should be simply: Recipients Ambientnet Do not put anything else in the body of the message. A subject heading is also not needed. You will get a message back shortly listing the names and email addresses of everyone on the list.

Center for Applied Anthropology
at Univ. of South Florida
The Center for Applied Anthropology fosters applied research and action projects which are closely related to the instructional programs of the College of Arts and Sciences , especially through the graduate programs in applied anthropology . Organizationally, the Center for Applied Anthropology is within the Department of Anthropology although it maintains an interdisciplinary perspective in its projects. The Center is directed by Alvin W. Wolfe , Distinguished Service Professor, Anthropology. While the Center is primarily oriented toward service and research, its activities relate closely to the instructional program of the College of Arts and Sciences. The director and most research associates are faculty members who engage students in their projects. The Center is resuscitating a publications project that was started some years ago while it was a part of the Human Resources Institute. Several monographs published at that time are still available for distribution: (1) Internship Training in Applied Anthropology; (2) Case Studies in Applied Anthropology Internship Training; and (3) Archaeology and Historic Preservation: A Guide to Compliance Procedures in the Tampa Bay Region. The Center also has the distribution rights for back issues of the journal CONNECTIONS, of which Alvin Wolfe was editor until 1994. Those are distributed for $30 per volume (ordinarily two issues). Alvin Wolfe is co-editor of a new journal, STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS, whose editorial office is considered a project of the Center for Applied Anthropology.

History
public sector (van Willigen 1986: 24). Applied work in archaeology was first initiated during the 1920s when government policy-makers cooperated in public works projects (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 283). During the World War II era, applied anthropologists employed under the community analysis section of the War Relocation Authority studied the problems associated with the forcible removal of West Coast Japanese to internment camps east of the Sierras (Foster 1969: 203). In 1941, the Society for Applied Anthropology was established by anthropologists including Margaret Mead, Eliot Chapple, and Fred Richardson in response to "growing academic bias" within the American Anthropological Association (AAA) (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 283). Later that same year, the first journal of SfAA was published, Applied Anthropology, though the name was changed to Human Organization in 1949. Also in 1949, the Society for Applied Anthropology was the first organization within anthropology to create an ethics statement, which called upon the anthropologist to, "take responsibility for the effects of his recommendations, never maintaining that he is merely a technician unconcerned with the ends toward which his applied scientific skills are directed" (Mead, Chapple, and Brown vol.8 1949: 20; van Willigen 1993: 32). SOPA, the Society of Professional Anthropologists was established in Tucson as the first local practitioner organization (LPO) in 1974 (van Willigen 1993:35; Fiske and Chambers 1997: 285). Though SOPA disbanded within a decade, it served as the model for many other regional organizations, such as the Washington Association of Practicing Anthropologists (in D.C.)and the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology (in Boulder, CO), which serve as "grassroots" organizations providing members with a forum to share common concerns, to establish identity, and to network with other professionals. Roughly a dozen LPOs are currently operating in the U.S. (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 285).
