Intro to Anthro
This book was required for my Intro to Anthropology course.It is an interesting book, but I would not recommend it as a good text for an Intro class because it focuses only on cultural anthro, and aside from a brief mention, completely ignores the other sub fields of the discipline.It would be a good introduction to -cultural- anthropology but not to anthropology in general.The sub fields are so varied that one cannot take one and then assume that all other areas of the discipline are similar.It is true that they do overlap and each provides insight to the other, but do not assume this book will introduce you to all that you need to know about anthropology.

Highly Readable Textbook
How often can you say you actually read an entire textbook for a course?I read this whole book; it was that well-written.

The material is well presented, with plenty of examples from all over the world.The Cross-Cultural Miscues are frequently amusing and always informative.One of my favorites involved differences in humor across cultures.

This textbook made a freshman level basics course more enjoyable than one expects of that type of course.

Socially engaged archaeology
This is a fine set of ten case studies, with excellent introductory and concluding chapters, on community-based archaeology. The case studies are largely but not entirely U.S., the exceptions being Ireland and Australia. It is an impressively integrated book, in that the chapters have some common themes, rather than being loosely related. The main themes are: working with and empowering subordinated groups such as Indian nations and African Americans, making sites and archaeology relevant to diverse audiences, and using archaeology to foster a sense of heritage. The authors generally take a postmodern position, borrowing many ideas from cultural anthropology, which include making archaeology more democratic, collaborative, participatory, interactive, multivocal, socially engaged, community-based, and empowering. I have used this book twice now in a graduate course in applied anthropology, and it has been well-received by students. It shows archaeology students that their work can profit from a knowledge of ethnography, and it shows cultural students that archaeology has a place in community development. Very useful
I can recommend this book particularly for a beginning graduate level course in applied cultural anthropology. The author uses a case study approach for the most part, drawn largely from his own considerable experience in Canada. He stresses the importance of public policy in anthropological practice. His approach is more methodological than subject oriented. Instead of chapters on medical anthropology, development anthropology, and the anthropology of business, he offers chapters on needs assessment, program evaluation, social impact assessment, focus groups, survey questionnaires, rapid assessment procedures, and participatory research. I believe this is exactly what the budding applied anthropologist needs to know. Engaging Reading
This is a phenomenal collection of essays, ranging from ancient agricultural techniques to the interpretation of Shakespeare in remote Africa. It provides basic, easy to read, and entirely absorbing examples of how the field of anthropology (as well as linguistics, sociology, archeology, paleontology, and more) is at work around the globe. Each reading is brief enough to engage even the most reluctant reader and no background experience is necessary to understand and enjoy them - although advanced students will not be disappointed.
