Marine Geology and Geophysics
The Division of Marine Geology and Geophysics conducts research and graduate instruction in marine geology , geophysics and geochemistry. The programs range from purely laboratory studies to applied field work. Located on the Virginia Key Campus of the University of Miami the School is adjacent to NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratories ( AOML) and Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFC). There are strong interactions between the division and AOML, Florida International University Nova Southeastern University and the University of South Florida at St. Petersburg and Tampa. Graduate Study programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are open to applicants with a background in geology, oceanography, or the physical sciences. Interdisciplinary studies with expertise in physics, chemistry, mathematics and/or biology are encouraged. Faculty members in the Division of Marine Geology and Geophysics (MGG) have diverse backgrounds and a wide range of scientific interests. The following pages will introduce you to the current academic staff through a brief description of their scientific interests and some of their recent publications and courses taught. As a prospective student, you should feel free to write or call any of the faculty about opportunities and activities in Marine Geology and Geophysics at RSMAS. New Initiaitves within MGG include the JOIDES office of the ODP which will be housed here under the direction of Dr. K. Becker and Dr. C Harrison from 2001 until 2003, the Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit

Marine Geology College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences
Oregon State University Introduction Marine Geology is a wide ranging discipline concerned with the history, structure and evolution of the earth. Scientists within this discipline usually have undergraduate training in geology, biology, physics, chemistry, engineering or mathematics. Marine Geology has been crucial in the development of the theory of plate tectonics that has changed the understanding of earth sciences during the last thirty years. Many of the major advances have been achieved by multidisciplinary research efforts of scientists with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. In addition to meeting wide ranging intellectual challenges, marine scientists must work under a variety of conditions at sea and all over the world, using and developing an evolving array of modern instruments and analytical facilities. Faculty and student research in Marine Geology at OSU ranges in scope from global studies of the internal structure of the earth, of plate motions and of geological records of past climate change, to studies of the dynamics of beaches, of micro-volumes of molten rock in laboratory furnaces or the chemistry of individual microfossils. The College offers many opportunities for interdisciplinary research through collaboration with COAS faculty and students in other disciplines such as chemical and biological oceanography. The College is the repository for deep sea sediment cores from the NORCOR Program.

OCEAN MINING
"... in the ocean depths, there are mines of zinc, iron, silver and gold which would be quite easy to exploit."
Jules Verne (1870)
"First Move Made to Mine Mineral Riches of Seabed" (New York Times, December 21, 1997) and " Goudmijnen onder zee" (de Volkskrant January 31, 1998 ) ... such were recent page one headlines in newspapers in New York and Amsterdam . The articles described the move by Nautilus Minerals Corporation, a Sydney based company registered in Papua New Guinea , to lay claim to almost 4000 km of PNG's seabed for the purpose of mining polymetallic sulfides (copper, zinc, lead, silver, gold). At the same time, American interests are moving fast to be among the first into what some see to be a new opportunity. What are these people after? There are about 150 sites of presently or recently active hydrothermal venting on the sea floor and more are being found every year by marine geologists, geophysicists and biologists conducting basic research on a fundamental Earth process. This is one important way that heat is ventilated from the interior. The vented hot water, at temperatures as high as 420 C but more commonly 350 C, carries dissolved in it high concentrations of metals, reduced sulfur and other elements that are precipitated when it encounters the 2

GSHHS - A Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline Database
GSHHS is a high-resolution shoreline data set amalgamated from two data bases in the public domain. The data have undergone extensive processing and are free of internal inconsistencies such as erratic points and crossing segments. The shorelines are constructed entirely from hierarchically arranged closed polygons. The data can be used to simplify data searches and data selections, or to study the statistical characteristics of shorelines and land-masses. It comes with access software and routines to facilitate decimation based on a standard line-reduction algorithm. Availability of the GSHHS data (v1.2 May 18, 1999)
  • Download GSHHS data via FTP
The link above is to the NGDC anonymous FTP area, GSHHS data are also available for direct download from the SOEST server . Please see the README file in the FTP area for full documentation. The latest files for version 1.2 were created May 18, 1999. The new version corrects previous errors for Win32 systems and is Y2K and POSIX compliant.

COASTAL MARINE GEOLOGY
The Coastal Marine Geology Section conducts research on the Maine Coast and provides technical information to other state agencies, local governments, businesses and the public involved in the coastal zone. Marine geologists conduct applied research and mapping on subjects such as beach and dune geology, nearshore nourishment sources, dredged material disposal sites, marine habitats, and strategic minerals. The Section also conducts coastal hazard studies related to sea-level rise and measures rates of beach erosion and bluff retreat. Marine geologists evaluate shoreline types for sensitivity to marine oil spills. Research is often collaborative with other state and univeristy scientists and uses geological and geophysical methods of sampling and surveying shoreline and underwater areas. Research results are regularly published in reports, maps and scientific journals as well as presented at public meetings. The coast of Maine has 5600 kilometers (3480 miles) of tidally-influenced shoreline and is the third longest in the United States. There are about 3500 islands included in the shoreline length. Mapping has estimated that about 2% of the coast (120 km or 75 miles) has beaches. About half of this distance is made up of sandy beaches and the other half is made up of coarser gravel and boulder beaches. The latter category is commonly pocket beaches, of which there are over 200 pocket barrier beaches that front coastal wetlands. Most large sandy beaches occur along the southern coast between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth, south of Portland. A few miles of sandy beaches also occur in midcoast Maine near the mouth of the Kennebec River.

MARINE GEOLOGY 5533 IMAGE GALLERY The images on this page are my way of sharing some of my favorite experiences conducting marine geological research. Enjoy! This is an image of Great Bahama Bank taken from the Space Shuttle . The light blue color of the shallow bank-top (<6 m deep) is evident. At the extreme right edge of the image is Andros Island, largest of the Bahamas archipelago. The white smudges in the water west (left) of Andros Is. are "whitings" - mysterious patches of highly turbid water commonly sighted on the bank-top. The origin of whitings is not known at the present time. Leading hypotheses suggest they result from 1) precipitation of calcium carbonate by microorganisms, 2) resuspension of fine-grained bottom sediment, 3) feeding activity of schooling fish. These dolphins were captured on video as they moved in to investigate my activies while I was conducting research in the Bahamas. These adults circled our position for about 20 minutes before moving on. This brief encounter with wild dolphins in their native domain ranks among the most extraordinary experiences I have ever had while SCUBA diving (another was being "narc-ed" senseless with my friend and mentor
