4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable reference
This graduate-level book is crammed with information about marine geology.Plenty of diagrams and charts assist in the visualization of sometimes difficult concepts. The book's only real flaws are that it is a bit out of date (15 years) and that the editing is a bit dense - every couple pages one runs across extremely abstruse phrasing or grammatical errors. The information itself, however, is indispensable. There aren't any real alternatives to this book if you are studying geological oceanography or are merely interested in post-introductory texts on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Un comentario desde Mexico.
A very good title for introducing in the marine field. There is no necesary a deep knowledge of the sedimentary processes, only the fundamental concepts. Also this book is good for tectonics and physicalgeology. Can remember many concepts and can learn many more. I think thisbook is the excellent complement in the sedimentology courses. Irecommended it for non-graduated students. If you want to known all themarine geology camp and what this camp can offers you...this book is allwhat you need.

... Read more

Product Description
The Sea Floor deals with the most important results achieved in Marine Geology over the last three decades. Relevant geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological and paleontological methods are shortly described. They should allow the reader to comment on new results about plate tectonics, marine sedimentation from the coasts to the deep sea, climatological aspects, paleoceanology and the use of the sea floor. The text tries to transmit to the reader the excitement of marine geological research both aboard and in modern laboratories. Basic mineralogical, geochemical, biological and other relevant data and a detailed list of books and symposia are given in an Appendix. The third corrected and revised edition contains an enlarged and updated list of references and some new figures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why was the 3rd edition published?
The 3rd edition of this book, published in 1996, is identical to the 2nd edition published in 1993. The only difference I could find was the design of the cover page. If you already own a copy of the 2nd edition, you don't have to buy the newer edition because there is nothing new in the 3rd edition. Just don't be confused.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive book on marine geology
This book comprehends the main aspects relating to the "ocean world". Its pages contain from basic information on the oceans' origin and history to the major advanced investigations on variations of the mean sea-level using microfossils (foraminifera). This book contains basicinformation for geology and oceanography ungraduate and master students. ... Read more

    Product Description
Although it is generally accepted that the Arctic Ocean is a very sensitive and important region for changes in the global climate, this region is the last major physiographic province of the earth whose short-and long-term geological history is much less known in comparison to other ocean regions. This lack of knowledge is mainly caused by the major technological/logistic problems in reaching this harsh, ice-covered region with normal research vessels and in retrieving long and undisturbed sediment cores. During the the last about 20 years, however, several international and multidisciplinary ship expeditions, including the first scientific drilling on Lomonosov Ridge in 2004, a break-through in Arctic research, were carried out into the central Artic and its surrounding shelf seas. Results from these expeditions have greatly advanced our knowledge on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironments.
Published syntheses about the knowledge on Arctic Ocean geology, on the other hand, are based on data available prior to 1990. A comprehensive compilation of data on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironment and its short-and long-term variability based on the huge amount of new data including the ACEX drilling data, has not been available yet. With this book, presenting (1) detailed information on glacio-marine sedimentary processes and geological proxies used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and (2) detailed geological data on modern environments, Quaternary variability on different time scales as well as the long-term climate history during Mesozoic-Tertiary times, this gap in knowledge will be filled.

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
Marine Geology. Preface:The geologists of the past have not always developed their science systematically. The geology of the seas has been especially neglected, but with good reason. Most geological subjects are readily accessible, or relatively so, as respects time and money. The examination of the sea floor, however, means expensive and lengthy cruises as well as intricate techniques of investigation. Only recently have an increas ing number of individual workers, oil companies, and oceanographical institutions embarked on a more intensive study of marine geology. This neglect still prevails in teaching in spite of the fact that most undergraduates will later spend a major portion of their time dealing with fossil marine sediments in one way or another. As long as marine geology remained undeveloped, this lack of emphasis could be fully justified. However, now that great advances in this subject have been made there would seem to be ample reason for giving more attention to the geological problems of the sea. To this end, three purposes have been in mind while this book was being written. The first was to introduce university students of ge ology to an important branch of their subject. The second, to pro vide a guide for geologists, oceanographers, and scientists in general who wish to explore the field of marine geology, and, finally, to aid the advance of research by summarizing achieved results and empha sizing the many problems still to be solved. It should be realized that this is not intended as a source book for data, but references, although not complete, will point the way to whatever detailed information the reader may require. Throughout, emphasis has been laid on problems in the hope of stimulating the students interest and his critical faculties. I am well aware, however, that this approach may have led me to make sweep ing statements and to emphasize some subjects beyond their general significance, while neglecting others. Some subjects, such as geo physics of the sea floor, geomorphology of coastlines, descriptive petrography of recent marine sediments, and the analysis of fossil rock facies, have purposely been touched on only superficially. On the other hand I have given special attention to coral reefs, submarine canyons, and the Moluccan deep-sea troughs, having spent much time myself on these subjects. The present volume differs markedly from other recent textbooks dealing with marine geology. Dalys The Floor of the Ocean is mainly geophysical Bourcarts Geographie du fond des mers, geo graphical The Oceans by Sverdrup et al., oceanographical. Shep ards excellent Submarine Geology emphasizes geomorphological mat ters and field techniques, and there is surprisingly little duplication in our texts. Not until well along with the writing did I realize how wide and diversified is the field of marine geology. Had it not been for the generous assistance offered by several colleagues this book would never have been brought to completion. Foremost among these are C. O. Dunbar, who read the whole of the original manuscript, and F. P. Shepard, who read most of it. Both suggested a very substantial number of corrections and alterations. Others who read some chap ters and gave valuable advice are P. Groen, D. L. Inman, A. N. Jeffares, Gerda A. Neeb, L. M. J. U. v. Straaten, and J. H. F. Umb grove... ... Read more

Marine Clastic reservoirs provides an integrated perspective to sandstone reservoir description and analysis. It combines analog-oriented methods from sequence stratigraphy with rigorous stratigraphic and sedimentological description of cores and outcrops to develop a process-based analysis of sandstone facies. Twelve chapters, divided into 3 sections, first describe the specific use of sequence stratigraphy to catalog, identify, and predict marine clastic reservoir facies. Next they examine the importance of rigorous sedimentological and geomorphic description. Finally, marine depositional environments from delta systems to deep-sea fans are reviewed to give examples of these improved descriptive and analytical techniques ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very average, not for those who know anything about geology already
This is rather an average sort of book on marine geology. There seems to be a high degree of repetitive information given in almost the same words under various headings. If you've already done any reading at all on geology, and especially on marine geology, it will probably contain little of interest. The book is a highly structured introduction to the subject, so one might be able to use it as a reference work, but the material is delivered in rather blunt and categorical prose.I might recommend it to a middle school or high school library, since it is not overly technical--think Discovery Channel or PBS level--however the writing style may discourage the younger reader. My first introduction--admittedly as an adult and one with a college level background but no prior knowledge of geology or oceanography--was the Press and Sievert edition (now out of print) of Earth, Earth: Fourth Edition, and that was a highly readable and very informative college level text, and one that most high school students could probably handle easily and middle school if they had an aptitude for science.

3-0 out of 5 stars Marine Geology - Undersea Landforms and Life Forms
I think parts of this book are unbelievable, especially the part about the blue orb. This book also has some probable theories of how the earth came about. The pictures and diagrams are very helpful and descriptive.I think this book might be a helpful resource for possible theories but I honestly did not enjoy this book.I thought this book had too many ideas that could never be proven.Someone who is interested in possible explanations about the Earth's creation should read this book. ... Product Description
Seabed fluid flow involves the flow of gases and liquids through the seabed. Such fluids have been found to leak through the seabed into the marine environment in seas and oceans around the world - from the coasts to deep ocean trenches. This geological phenomenon has widespread implications for the sub-seabed, seabed, and marine environments. Seabed fluid flow affects seabed morphology, mineralization, and benthic ecology. Natural fluid emissions also have a significant impact on the composition of the oceans and atmosphere; and gas hydrates and hydrothermal minerals are potential future resources. This book describes seabed fluid flow features and processes, and demonstrates their importance to human activities and natural environments. It is targeted at research scientists and professionals with interests in the marine environment. Colour versions of many of the illustrations, and additional material - most notably feature location maps - can be found at www.cambridge.org/9780521819503. ... Read more
