Child behavior problems turn around with on-the-spot coaching of parents Tuesday, September 10, 2002 By CECELIA GOODNOW
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER It's 7 p.m. and the entourage has arrived. Jodi Walker, frazzled after a day that began at 4:30 that morning, enters the deserted waiting room with her two young sons and a child-welfare worker in tow. She's about to start her second play-by-play coaching session with Harborview social worker Naomi Perry, following a carefully scripted parenting program that could be her best hope for a decent home life. Gilbert W. Arias / P-I Levi Walker responds to the announcement that playtime is over by banging on the metal bottom of the Lincoln Logs container. His mother, Jodi, is coached to turn her back and say out loud how much fun she's having playing alone. At first his angry drumming drowns out his mother's voice. "I just want to be a good mom," says Walker, 32, looking weary after her day as a cafeteria worker. Her honey-brown hair is parted in the middle and pulled back from her round face.

In particular, I am interested in systems of nonverbal communication and the effects of psychopathology on facial expression and other nonverbal social behavior. I am currently an assistant professor of Anthropology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania , and am adjunct assistant professor in a department of Psychology , at the University of Pittsburgh where I am working with the Affect Analysis Group , developing objective measures of nonverbal behavior. Wilderness Therapy Wilderness therapy is founded on the basic principle that nature serves as the ultimate teacher, unable to be manipulated by defiant teens. When struggling teens are removed from the home environment and find themselves among their peers in the wilderness, they quickly learn that cooperation and responsibility for their behaviors will make the wilderness experience a rewarding one. The additional presence of therapists gives teens the opportunity to discuss their concerns and problems, not only with a qualified adult, but with their fellow adolescents who area struggling with similar issues.
