5-0 out of 5 stars Redirecting Children's Behavior
Out of all the books there are on parenting, this book not only shows the typical and atypical quandaries that come up with your child(ren), It gives options and concrete examples of how to deal with different needs, and types of children. I have 3 adult kids that I love dearly and I ask myself, How would my parenting have been if I had read this book 32 years ago? Very Different!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting Book
This book was very informative and helpful when our children were young. I purchased it for our daughter and son-in-law as a gift before their first son was born. Parenting is not for "Sissies" and this book was a life-saver.

5-0 out of 5 stars We need all the help we can get
Things can be turned around for the good of both parents and children. We all say and do things that may hurt love ones.We may not even be aware of it.Children are children and do pattern their lives sometimes by how they are treated. Learning to redirect obstacles between the parents and children is beneficial.

5-0 out of 5 stars If this book doesn't help you as a parent, you just aren't trying
This book, and the accompanying 6 week seminar on parenting from INCAF is a life saver for parents. My wife and I were only children, and started late in life with a family, and it has made ALL the difference. We read this when they were two and now they are twelve, and I can say my sons are two well adjusted young men. If you try the techniques, you will be amazed. I have personally recommended this book to every new parent I meet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book that should come with a money-back guarantee.I cannot imagine anyone reading this book and not emerging from it a happier and more effective parent. As a working mom with three kids aged 10 and under, I can tell you, I wish I had read this book years ago - it would have saved me so much frustration! The book is short, well written, and a quick read. The message is simple and powerful, and the examples and anecdotes really help the reader to process the material.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Resource!
I recieved the book a couple of days ago and are already implementing the techniques with my clients and their parents.I work with children who have academic and behavior problems in school and I find this a valuable resource in not only finding ways to help the child, but ways to help the parents as well.I can't wait to use more of this resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource!
As a parent of a defiant child who tests everything, this book has been very helpful for our family.Dr. Bloomquist's book is well organized and straightforward, offering useful tools for teaching appropriate behavior. Most children pick up on social and emotional development cues from those around them, but for children who do not learn these skills as easily, this book is a great help in showing how to teach social/emotional skills.

Bloomquist begins with an explanation of various adjustment and behavior problems in children.Next, there is a section that includes a questionnaire to aide in determining your child's needed area(s) of focus for skills training (self-control,social development, emotional development, academic development, and parent personal well-being), which I found very useful in determining which areas of focus should be of highest priority for my child.

The following sections cover each of the above focus areas in detail.Sections are broken down into step by step actions to take in order to help your child develop skills in the area (ex:teach a child to perform positive social behavior by determining the target behavior, explain it in children's terminology, demonstrate the behavior, and role play the behavior with your child until s/he fully understands the target behavior).

Having a child with behavior problems can be exhausting and I especially appreciated Bloomquist's section called, "Improving Parent Well-Being."He offers specific steps to help parents realize how even unhelpful thoughts can impede their child's success and shows us how to counter these thoughts by rethinking them in a more helpful manner.

There are helpful charts included in each section, but they are not elaborate and time consuming for parents to use.I have found that they help my child to be more reflective of her actions and how they affect her and others.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpfull

4-0 out of 5 stars Using this book in Practice

This book gives parents "homework" to use with the child as well as track the child's behavior to report at our next appointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Raising Children
This book comes in really handy for maintaining a parent's sanity. It gives common and not-so-common types of behavior arranged according to age.It also gives explanations and some advice. When children start doing something new and unexpected, I look up the notes around that age, and find that it's common and passes. It's very reassuring. Also reading ahead can prepare you for what's to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forewarned is forearmed
I found this book to be of immense value when raising my daughter. It was recommended to me by a Senior Child Health Nurse. The book details the stages of a child's development - in the first year it was accurate to within a week!It was reassuring to know that my child was quite normal, even when exhibiting the "head banging" behaviour in the cot every night.Together with "Your Child's Self Esteem" by Dorothy Corkille Briggs, this formed the essential reading aides to raising my daughter who is now healthy, happy and intelligent.I frequently recommend it to friends and relatives, and "Your Child's Self Esteem" to anyone seeking the best in depth explanation of the subject of self esteem - for themselves and others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
This book is severely outdated and contains a lot of nonsense. That fat children are likely to be happy and lazy for instance. Or that some babies can start solids at younger than 3 months.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is my child normal?
This is one of the best books on child development I've read.I recently sent it to my son who has 2 toddlers.I have been sharing my book with friends who want to know if their child is "normal".I've had my book for over 35 years and it is still "up to date."

5-0 out of 5 stars Child Behavior
This book was recommended by my pediatrician almost 29 years ago.So glad it is available as that child is now a dad.It does not tell you "the best way to rear your child", like all the others do, thank goodness! It is a fabulous book that explains the normal behaviors at different ages and explains all aspects of child behavior whether it be sleeping, potty training, fears or dealing with new siblings. This is the best there is for any parent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Raising Quality Care Through Careful Observation
Now in its Fifth Edition, Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children, by Dorothy H. Cohen, Virginia Stern, Nancy Balaban and Nancy Gropper (Teachers College Press, 2008) is a valuable resource for family child care providers. Observation is a key element in a providers training background, a requirement in many cases such as with the Registry, the CDA and NAFCC accreditation. Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children gives providers a handbook of information to using appropriate observing and recording techniques as well as how to use this information to make decisions regarding a child's development and educational plan.

The authors carefully examine each aspect of a child's day and the opportunities it presents for observation, teaching providers to do more than record what children do, but how, and in what context. "If we could say that understanding a child is like unraveling a mystery, then taking records is the gathering of clues," they tell us. This information allows providers to make discoveries in regard to why children do what they do.

The book offers hundreds of examples of specific situations of observing a child, such as: during routines, while using materials, their behavior with other children, their behavior during dramatic play, their general play, their relationships with adults, and their cognitive functioning, among others. There are multiple lists of questions for the provider to ask themselves during an observation to help them get the most details. There is also a chapter discussing the use of language as a tool in recording, showing how the use of verbs, adverbs and adjectives can lead to a more accurate account of a child's behavior.

There is also discussion on a child's temperament and culture and how it affects their behavior. Other chapter topics include: recording developing language and emergent literacy, observing and recording behavior of infants and toddlers and recording the behavior of children for whom there are special concerns.

Finally, the book shows how to pull all this observation together to find patterns, and create a summary and interpretation to be used when discussing a child's progress with parents.

Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children is a valuable tool for family child care providers looking to enhance their curriculum through individual observation and recording of children's behavior.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
Desperately needed help with my borderline ADHD, ODD 3 yr old boy.As I studied, absorbed and instituted the author's recommendations, I gradually observed positive changes in him.Our household of 5 has gone from a battle zone to relatively harmonious and fun.I did not think it was possible.

2-0 out of 5 stars We're ALL defiant, it seems!
This book earned itself a free flight across the room and into the opposite wall, when I encountered the following definitions, ten pages in:

"Therefore, to answer the question, 'Is there really anything wrong, or is it just me,' you need some reliable objective measures. My colleagues and I consider a child oppositional and defiant when the child demonstrates a pattern of three types of behavior:

"1. The child fails to start doing what you ask within one minute after you make the request (or one minute following the point at which you say the child has to do what you ask, such as after the cartoon he is watching is over)."

Good heavens. Who knew? It seems that I also have a defiant *husband*, as well as a defiant child!! And to be fair, I find out that *I* am also regularly defiant! Don't ask how many times my husband has to ask me to do my taxes, in an average year. Well, on we go...

"2. The child fails to finish what you've asked her to do. Some children may get up and start making their beds as requested right away, but then they run off to do something more appealing in the middle of the chore."

Well, THAT'S certainly not normal. I mean, if it were, we'd have a whole nation of people checking their Facebook pages or thinking about their vacations or talking about last night's episode of Lost, or even SHOPPING ON AMAZON, when they SHOULD be WORKING!!

"3. The child violates rules of conduct already taught. Does your son know that swearing is unacceptable in your house, but he does it anyway? Does your daughter understand the rule, 'no snacks without permission,' but constantly take food from the refrigerator without asking?"

Oh, for pity's sake. Kid drops the f-bomb or raids the fridge and he's diagnosable? What are we raising here, humans or Imperial Storm Trooper Clones? Would you take parenting advice from someone who never did these things? Would you want to BE parented by someone whose demands for compliance were that rigid?

There are some families out there with REAL problems. Kids who do real harm to others and themselves. Kids whose anxieties are so paralyzing that they can't even leave the house. Why are we pathologizing kids who do things that we ALL did, and all STILL do, even as adults?

Okay. Deep breath. Retrieve book from place behind the sofa where it landed. The dust jacket features a recommendation by Ed Hallowell, who's someone I respect. Russell and Christine, Ed's just obtained you your second chance. Don't be wasting my valuable time, now. Give me some worthwhile perspective -- within one minute of me requesting it, please.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for parents of normal and abnormal defiant behavior
This is a very helpful book for parents who are discerning DOB vs normal defiance, and want to direct their kids to better behavior and ward off the possibility of DOB in later years. Teaches caregivers how to respond to defiant behavior in simple, easy to implement steps.

3-0 out of 5 stars review
I like the ideas and plans the book has if you are dealing with a defiant child. They suggest implementing one step each week and then proceeding from that point. The method makes sense to me, making it a part of your life is another tough one, however...

    Product Description

Temper tantrums in the supermarket. Tears that seem to come out of nowhere. Battles over homework that are more like wars. When your child has problems regulating his or her emotions, there's no hiding it. Children with intense emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds and are prone to frequent emotional and behavioral outbursts that leave parents feeling bewildered and helpless.

Other parents may have told you that it's just a phase or that your child needs discipline. In reality, your child may have emotion dysregulation, a tendency to react intensely to situations other children take in stride. Parenting a Child Who Has Intense Emotions is an effective guide to de-escalating your child's emotions and helping your child express feelings in productive ways. You'll learn strategies drawn from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), including mindfulness and validation skills, and practice them when your child's emotions spin out of control. This well-researched method for managing emotions can help your child make dramatic emotional and behavioral changes that both of you will be proud of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solutions for Parenting Emotional Teens
Of all the books I have read, this one is the clearest explanation of why my teen acts the way she does and more importantly, what parenting strategies can help us cope.I have tried many of the techniques in the book over the last several months and each one has not only proven effective, but has improved the relationship between me and my daughter. My daughter has been diagnosed with Bi Polar Disorder and shows many Borderline Personality Disorder symptoms.I did not understand her "rages and irrational explosions", let alone how to deal with them. The techniques in this book are workable solutions to provide parents with the tools to de-escalate their teens emotions and subsequently help the child to learn to calm themselves down. I would strongly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and wise advice that can transform your life!
This book is packed with understanding, and offers many new strategies for parents to cope with situations that sometimes seem hopeless. The authors have adapted the fundamental principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for use by parents on themselves. They also have added lots of their own ideas and combined clinical (professional) and personal (parental) insights. The books includes lots of examples about somewhat younger children, but the exercises and the practical strategies work amazingly well for parents who have mid- to late teens or even young adult children with emotional dysregulation.Above all, if one opens up and considers that things can get better -- much better -- through a willigness to change ourselves (as parents) and how we respond to truly difficult parenting challenges, it can and does happen. The basic starting points are reassuring -- we are doing the best that we can and so is our child; and at the same, we can do things in new ways that more efefctive! This book stays by our bedside -- truly -- and we opened it again this morning and found strength and encouragement therein.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical book for parents, teachers, and other professionals
In this very readable book, Harvey and Penzo give many practical suggestions for parents who are dealing with a child who has frequent intense emotional outbursts. They point out that a child's angry, explosive behaviors are the way he has learned to manage his feelings, and that he needs to be taught new skills.Expecting a child to know how to behave in all situations is unrealistic. He must be taught until he can use skills in all situations.

Just as the child needs new skills, this book teaches new skills to parents to help them more effectively help a child manage his emotions. The goal of the book is to help parents think and respond "wisely", incorporating both feelings and logic, when responding to the child's behavior.

The authors recommend that parents remind themselves that their child "is doing the best he can," and that they balance "acceptance of your child in the moment with expecting and helping him to do things better in the future."At the same time, they remind parents that "you are doing the best you can and that you can do better."

As a parent of a child with intense emotions, and an elementary teacher, I highly recommend this book for parents, families, educators, and other professionals. The practical strategies are useful for our work with all children to make them (and us) happier and more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use this resource when every other book hasn't helped!
I am the parent of five children.Four of them are able to manage their emotions and social interactions appropriately. This book has been extremely beneficial for me to more effectively parent my fifth child who struggles with intense anger and mood swings and who has difficulty maintaining friendships and making safe and healthy decisions. The parenting techniques I use for my other children don't work for this child. This book helps parents recognize when their child is in emotional distress; it teaches you how to help your child manage these overwhelming emotions and how to respond differently to behaviors you want to decrease. Other aspects of this book that I appreciate and recommend to other parents are the chapters on taking care of yourself and on how one child's emotional disregulation impacts the whole family.I have post-its throughout the book, and you will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs these skills!
This easy to read book provides key techniques for dealing with difficult interpersonal situations. These are life skills, not just for dealing with a child with intense emotions.

"Parenting a Child with Intense Emotions" provides clear direction and actionable skills that you can use immediately to make you more effective. It teaches you how to stay calm and reach an effective solution while minimizing conflict.

As I began reading the book, I thought that it seemed a bit simple.I identified with so much of it, but I truly didn't think that the techniques and subtle changes would make much of a difference.Although it isn't 100% solved, I have a much better understanding of what my child is going through and I can definitely see the difference in his attitude."less defiant" is a good description and I'm a much better person for reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars 180 degree turn in our relationship
Dramatically reshaped the way I THINK about and thus ACT towards my child. This in turn has caused a dramatic change in how she acts towards me.We have so much more affection and happy times - and therefore she is more compliant and cooperative. What a refreshing change.Does need more specifics to help after the 'honeymoon' period is over. For that, I would recommend what I read next 'Kazdin's Method for Defiant Children'.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed the way I parent
This book has changed the way I parent and consequently, it has changed my life.My husband, parents, and in-laws all notice that the way I interact with my daughter has significantly changed and we are seeing positive results. This book has concrete strategies and it constantly reviews the previous information so that you really internalize the information. In addition to being a mom, I am a social worker and work with families.I plan to recommend it to any family who is struggling with defiance or power struggles.I highly recommend this book!!

2-0 out of 5 stars don't see this working
I don't get it. Where is the concrete advice? Seems like he is saying to give them lots of love and try to understand them..OK.. so, What do I do when my 14 year old disrupts our family every night by being obnoxious at the dinner table and I ask her to stop 5 times...she does not learn from her mistakes and does not listen to anything we ask.. I am then told to not use consequences.. OK. What do I do? We are all enjoying a nice dinner and she is being loud and annoying. We are supposed to ask her what is going on with her and validate her? Being ADD is not an excuse for bad behavior. She lost her computer for the night..maybe that will get through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best book on this subject
Altho' I am skeptical of titles that claim to work miracles in 10 days, I have to recommend this book.I borrowed a slew of books from the library on this topic and this one is the most direct,[so much so that I purchased my own copy). And his recommendations do work and quickly. However, one has to be prepared to change a lot about oneself. The ideas do work quickly but for the longterm they require a constant effort. Its worth it though, because the alternative is very expensive and not guaranteed. ... Product Description

Psychologists offer an increasing variety of services to the public. Among these services, psychological assessment of personality and behavior continues to be a central activity. One main reason is that other mental health professionals often do not possess a high level of competence in this area. And when dealing with children and adolescents, psychological assessment seems to take on an even greater role. Therefore, it follows that comprehensive graduate-level instruction in assessment should be a high priority for educators of psychologists who will work with these youth.

This textbook is organized into three sections, consistent with the authors’ approach to teaching. Part I provides students with the psychological knowledge base necessary for modern assessment practice, including historical perspectives, measurement science, child psychopathology, ethical, legal, and cultural issues, and the basics of beginning the assessment process. Part II gives students a broad review of the specific assessment methods used by psychologists, accompanied by specific advice regarding the usage and strengths and weaknesses of each method. In Part III, we help students perform some of the most sophisticated of assessment practices: integrating and communicating assessment results and infusing assessment practice with knowledge of child development and psychopathology to assess some of the most common types of behavioral and emotional disorders in youth.

A text focusing on assessment practices must be updated every four to six years to keep pace with advances in test development. For example, several of the major tests reviewed in the text, such as the Behavioral Assessment System for Children and the Child Behavior Checklist, have undergone major revisions since the publication of the last edition making the current content outdated. Further, another major test, the Conners’ Rating Scales, is undergoing substantial revisions that should be completed before publication of the next edition. Finally, the evidence for the validity of the tests and the recommendations for their appropriate use evolve as research accumulates and requires frequent updating to remain current. For example, there was a special issue of the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology published focusing on evidenced-based assessment of the major forms of childhood psychopathology that will need to be integrated into the chapters in Part 3.

This latter point reflects an important trend in the field that should influence the marketing of the book. That is, there are several initiatives being started in all of the major areas of applied psychology (e.g., school, clinical, and counseling) to promote evidenced-based assessment practices. These initiatives have all emphasized the need to enhance the training of graduate students in this approach to assessment. This has been the orientation of this textbook from its first edition: that is, Clinical Assessment of Child and Adolescent Personality and Behavior has focused on using research to guide all recommendations for practice. The ability of the textbook to meet this training need should be an important focus of marketing the book to training programs across all areas of applied psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resource Yet!
I have a "strong willed" 4 year old with sensory integration issues, and I have read a number of books and visited with multiple professionals(OT, developmental pediatrician, MHMR), and this book has been the most helpful resource yet!It gave me practical, effective ideas to use with my son and boy, has it worked! I no longer feel stressed and frustrated. I saw the difference almost immediately. I can't recommend this book highly enough to other parents with "difficult", "challenging" or "strong willed" children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing!
I just want to thank the author of this excellent book for taking the time to understand strong willed children and showing other parents how to also. I have been having problems with my 3 1/2 yr old daughter. Like most strong willed children, she is very smart and she can also be very sweet and kind, but most of the time in our house there is chaos. If you have never had one of these children, I'm sure you are sitting back saying, "all that kid needs is a good spanking!" and normally when kids misbehave I would agree, but that is what I have been doing and it has been completely ineffective. It only makes her angrier, and more frustrated. I have been trying time outs, but they also have not been working. Out of desperation I ordered this book, and it has explained everything so clearly. I was to the point of thinking that, despite her intelligence, there was something wrong mentally with my daughter. I knew she was stubborn, but I had never heard of strong willed children. This book showed me that not only is nothing wrong with my daughter, but that I can change her behaviour just by changing the way I react to her. I noticed today was so much easier, I clearly stated in a calm voice what I did or did not want her to do, and if she disobeyed then I (calmly) put her in a room by herself, set the timer and held the door shut. She has gotten into the habit of backtalking, which I cannot stand, but instead of yelling, spanking or otherwise drawing attention to it, the book instructs parents to ignore it completely, because the only reason she does it is to start a fight with me. There was a minimum of backtalking today! I have known for a while that what I was doing wasn't working with her, but I had no idea what the right methods were. Thanks to this book I have all the tools I need to calmly, wisely, and effectively parent my strong willed child.

3-0 out of 5 stars For the Child of AVERAGE Will
Although I wasn't crazy about the author's derogatory tone toward any parent who spanks, I found this to be a great basic parenting book.It is not, however, truly geared toward parents of strong-willed children. The underlying premise of the book is simply, "Make your limits clear, enforce them - period - and your child will comply."As the parent of a very strong-willed preschooler (as well as a more "average"-willed grade schooler), I find this, frankly, offensive. His strong implication is that if my child is not behaving, overall, the way I would like her to be, then it must be because I'm permissive or overly harsh.

Actually, the children he describes in his examples are clearly not exceptionally strong-willed, because they all respond very quickly to simple consequences. They may not be exceptionally compliant, but neither are they particularly strong-willed.The strong-willed child will find any way humanly possible to circumvent consequences - or just hold out until they're through and then return to what he was already doing.Unfortunately, time outs (enforced as necessary by physically carrying the child to his room and then holding the door shut until time out is over) is the only suggestion he makes that I can imagine actually working with a strong-willed child.Even if I wanted to use time outs for everything, they don't work for everything, so the book still leaves parents of strong-willed children without the ability to consistently enforce the house rules.

    To offer a few examples:
A situation is described in which a child arrives at the author's office and refuses to stop twirling his chair. As a consequence, he's told to sit in a stationery plastic chair. and he reluctantly complies. This would only work if we were prepared to physically place her in the other chair and then hold her there, probably screaming, the entire time we attempted to hold a conversation.

In another instance, a child was refilling his squirt gun from an off-limits faucet. As a result, he lost the use of the squirt gun - by handing it over to his mother. My strong-willed child would never have handed over the gun; unless we could forcibly remove it from her hands without fear of harming her (for instance, by accidentally breaking one of the fingers she has clamped around it), and then literally lock it away until she's allowed to have it back, this would never work.

As a final example, a preschooler is described as dawdling over getting dressed for preschool. She's given twenty minutes to finish getting dressed, at which point the clothes are gathered into a bag and loaded into the car along with the half-dressed child. We are told that the child will "scramble to finish getting dressed." Mine would not.Even if she would, how can a young child safely get dress in the backseat of a moving vehicle?

All in all, I really did find this a good presentation of basic parenting principles. But for those who are already familiar with sound parenting, and seeking techniques that work with very stubborn children, it really isn't helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eminently Effective
SETTING LIMITS offers the most effective method that will get any strong-willed child (or any child) to listen & cooperate beautifully. First the author lists nine traits to help parents understand the temperaments of their children. A strong-willed child tests, resists and protests while the compliant children respond to discipline fairly well. Once a strong-willed child is identified, the book uses running through red lights as an example to illustrate how a strong-willed kid needs to receive consequence to learn the rule. If a police comes and gives only lectures, sermons and second chances, the message is that it's okay to run through a red light if one can put up with the annoying preaches (the permissive approach). And imagine again, the police comes and he yells, screams and spanks with anger then the kid will probably feel he has been wronged(the punitive approach). Most parents alternate between the two and such inconsistency will cause more frustration and confusion.

The central idea of the book is so simple but it works like magic. When a child has done something wrong (running through red lights), give them consequences(tickets) right away. Strong-willed child will test, challenge but they are actually asking parents to hold firm and carry out consequence in a calm and respectable way. As a parents match their action with their words consistently, children learn to respect and take their rules seriously. Every success story told is a difficult child redeemed - a child that is STRONG and WILL listen very well now.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a relief!
I'm only on page 35 of this book, but what an eye-opener it is already! It was all right there in front of me; I just couldn't see it for all the emotional turmoil.I am now confident my husband and I will be able to get our family life back on track. We were parenting our daughter the way WE were parented, and we were in the "compliant child" category. We could not understand how the methods our parents used with us were not working with our child. It's a huge comfort to realize we weren't really doing anything "wrong" per se.We just need to do it differently with our strong-willed daughter. While I've only scratched the surface with this book, I would already highly recommend it to other parents struggling with a strong-willed child. ... I have an advanced degree and work as a school psychologist and found this book to be way too elementary. It would be a good resource for parents or a beginnng teacher.I gave the book an overall low rating becasue it advertises iteself as a resource for therapists/practioners. If you don't know this stuff, you should not be working with kids as a therapist!

This book presents many executable methods to manage noncompliant and disruptive children for parents and professionals. In my case as a naviceprofessional, I was debt too much in author. In korea, I worked throughsome skills of this book, and then administered to mothers who haveoffsprings with disruptive disorders in hospital settings. In three months-long group program (once a week) our participant (mothers) coudl reportgeneral satisfaction with child rearing and lowered their children'sproblem behavior level.I'm very appreciated author again!

I am a child psychiatrist in Taiwan, and I boughtthis book in 1997 when I participated in the Americam Psychiatric Association Annual Conference. I found this book very practical and helpful to both myself and my clients'parents,so I decided to translate it into Chinese, and finally the Chineseedition had been published on March 1999.I used this book to discuss withclients' parents about how to handle behavior-disordered clients'disruptive behaviors.Parents very much appreciated this book about itsconvenience, practical procedure, and detailed explanation of "knowhow". This is the most practical book I have found in Taiwan forworking with parents with behavior-disordered children.

Skills Training for Children with Behavior Disorders is wonderful! It contains very clear and concise information and suggestions for any parent (or teacher) who is dealing with a disruptive child. The workbook shedslight on other areas that could be causing the child to act out (such asfamily behavior and outside support). The worksheets included are helpfulin breaking the behaviors down one by work without overwhelming the childall at once, allowing the child to see their progress one step at a time. Product Description
Sexually inappropriate touching, language, and other actions on thepart of children are difficult to diagnose and treat.
Prevailing taboos about sex and the misconception that inappropriate sexual behavior is always a sign of sexual abuse inhibits frank conversation and often leads families to hide problems.

Here WilliamFriedrich, with more than 25 years of experience in the field, offers a research-based andclinically-proven method for assessment, diagnosis, and intervention with children andtheir families. This book distinguishes itselfby Friedrich's emphasis on addressing sexualbehavior problems from an attachmentperspective.

This means that, whenever possible, inappropriate sexual behavior is considered in light of larger family dynamics, emotional security, and child development. Italso implies that family therapy is the idealtreatment modality. An important part of helping a child who exhibits inappropriate behaviorinvolves guidance and reinforcement in the home. Friedrich shows therapists how to include thewhole family in the process while notendangering the child or alienating thefamily.

A key feature ofChildren with Sexual Behavior Problemsis the Assessment and Treatment Manual thatconstitutes the second part of the book.Grounded in the research-based perspectivearticulated in Part 1, the Manual putsFriedrich's insights into practice. Clearguidelines for evaluation and diagnosis areoffered and a wealth of forms for clinicians and clients are included in order to structuretherapeutic work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Friedrich's newest and last book
My long time colleague, Dr. Friedrich writes another book for the treatment of sexually abused children. He was the most compassionate, loving and understanding person I have ever had the good fortune to work with.He has a simple but direct way of dealing with families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good!!

I read this book for a book report on Children Psycology class I had, and it was amazing. Itotally recomend this book for parents that are not sure about their children's sexual behavior. It has a great amount of examples that the author relates when he saw some of his patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sexual behavior problems in children:What's really going on?
What is normal? What is pathological? How do you tell?who was abused sexually, who acts out for other reasons? This book addresses these issues with: research findings, boradening of context, clinical case studies. It even provides copies and links to assessment tools.

It is so important that treating therapists do not base their judgments on vague clinical connections, but solid theory and research data. This book paints the context.

I still wish that most attachment theory data did not just measure, for the most part, the quality of attachment between mothers and children and not link it to the wider familial and social context However, this book does also describe and measure other social and familial context, parenting styles, domestic violence etc. as crucial players in the development of sexual behavior problems in children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book for therapists in this area
While I am still reading this book, it is already clear that it offers a great deal to the therapist working in this area.

Friedrich clearly and cogently outlines the contributors to sexualised behaviour in children, particularly usefully examing the role of attachment difficulties .

His manual is very interesting and useful, and we are very likely to incorporate many elements of it into the service we run, although we will need to consider carefully how to integrate it with Australian families and their different culture around therapy.

The PTSD workbook included looks very promising, and I am eager to test it with children I am seeing.

As ever, Friedrich's research base anchors his methods clearly to available research.

The book also encourages the practitioner to read widely about methodologies he describes as useful in the work.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a wonderful book explaining in simple language various levels of sexual behvior and development. Helpful to parents and professionals, you will be able to identify and recognize differences between normal, inappropriate and troublesome sexual behavior. Also helps parentsunderstand how to talk to their children about sex at the child'sdevelopmental level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Your Child's Sexual Behavior is excellent
While this is not an introductory text, it does cover many topics that are areas of concern for parents. Since there are so many children who have been exposed to adult sexuality, abused, or just experimenting with growingup, it is important for parents and clinicians to be able to accessaccurate and uncomplicated information. Dr. Cavanagh-Johnson hasarticulated this well in this book. A very good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
This book is an excellent reference for educators and parents of a child who has been abused, but it may not be what the average parent is looking for.If you are simply looking for ways to help your child develop anormal sexuality, a different book would be better. If you have a childwith a persistent sexual behavior which disturbs you, then this is yourbook. It can help you decide what is normal, what is not, and what to donext. Some of the statistical information is confusing and poorlyexplained, but the practical information could be invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable info and good sense about children and sex
We live in a time when fourth graders are suspended from school for "sexually harassing" little girls on the playground and the names of 10-year-old boys names are published as registered sex offenders Texas. Some publicly proclaim, "sex before 8 or it's too late." And theAmerican Psychological Association was forced by a nationally known a radioadvice show hostess to explain itself for publishing perfectly good, peerreviewed literature about the lasting effects of child sexual abuse, because it suggested the some politically unpopular (though scientificallysupportable) conclusions. A sense of balance and fairness is badly neededand Dr. Toni Cavanagh Johnson provides a good dose of it in thisbook.

Children are sexual people and she isn't afraid to say so. But shealso describes how their sexuality is different from adult sexuality andhow the two don't mix without risking dire consequences for the child.

Dr. Cavangh Johnson describes normal childhood sexuality as one end of acontinuum. Most children fit that description. A few are on the other end -sexually aggressive children who assault others. In between are sexuallyreactive and sexually pre-occupied children, also carefully described.Concerned adults are given guidelines for assessing their child's sexualbehavior, putting it in context and acting without over-reacting, whenaction is indicated.

As a practicing psychotherapist and ContinuingEducation Instructor for Child Welfare social workers, I'm whole-heartedlyrecommending this thorough, yet short and easy-to-understand book toparents, foster parents, teachers, social workers and anyone interested insexual development and sexual behavior of children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to Developmental Psychopathologists
This casebook provides a practical approach to learning about Developmental Psychopathology. A number of disorders are discussed, such as learning disabilities, elimination disorders, conduct disorders, and substance abuse. Each chapter features a different case, and for each case, the author describes the symptoms, assessment, risk factors and maintaining variables, developmental aspects, and treatment. The author has also contributed discussion questions at the end of each chapter to ensure full comprehension of the disorder at hand.

In addition to the common (and not-so-common) classifiable disorders, there are three "mixed cases", featuring symptoms from a variety of disorders. These cases are effective in educating the reader on how to treat vague cases.

While I purchased this book as a requirement for a Developmental Psychology course, I still reference it regularly and find it captivating and compelling. Really, this book is a must for anyone interested in Developmental Psychopathology or Psychology.

This book was the most practical guide to managing children's behavior ever!I have an 8-year old son with high-functioning autism and a 6-year old neurotypical daughter.I received as much information about helping to get my daughter to stay in her bed at night and to get ready more quickly and willingly in the morning as I did dealing with my son's behavior issues.A great big "thank you" to the authors, both of whom obviously have experience not just as behavior professionals but as parents as well.

    Product Description
Every parent would happily give up ever scolding, punishing or threatening if she only knew how to ensure that her toddler/child/teen would thrive and act responsibly without such painful measures. Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves is the answer to this universal wish. It is not about gentle ways to control a child, but about a way of being and of understanding a child so she/he can be the best of herself, not because she fears you, but because she wants to, of her own free will.

"Aldort’s book should be on the must read list of all Moms and Dads. This book could carrya subtitle: "Saving the Emotional Lives of Our Children and The Future of Humanity.""

    - James Prescott, Ph.D. Institute of Humanistic Science

"Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves operates on the radical premise that neither child nor parent must dominate; it is for those who want to give up scolding, threatening and punishing. Her SALVE "formula" alone is worth the price of the book."- Peggy O'MaraEditor and Publisher of Mothering

"Every once in awhile, a writer comes along who is comfortable speaking the truth, no matter how much it might challenge us or make us uncomfortable. Naomi Aldort is one of those people. In Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves, Naomi Aldort takes the struggle out of parenting and replaces controlling and shaping style of parenting with one that values, trusts and nurtures children's innate abilities and autonomy."

    - Wendy PriesnitzEditor of Life Learning magazine, author of School Free and Challenging Assumptions in Education

"In this stunning insight into human nature, Naomi Aldort opens a window into harmonious family living. This book should to be widely read and not just by parents but by every being who strives for a more peaceful world."

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
this book has some great ideas on how we need to teach our children. If we pass on our hurts and feelings to our children , we would only perpetuate the cycle. Its time for us moms to take up our role and be who we were meant to be, guiders to our children. Im not stating that we should not discipline, not not more than neccessary. Also do not project your own fears on your children. Let them be free and they will suprise you with how much they know and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PARENTS MUST HAVE
ALL parents should have to read a copy of this book.We would have better children and parents.I believe this world would be a better place if parents read this book and applied what they learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Practical!
This book can be life changing for children and their caretakers. Practicing unconditional love gives children the gift of attention and acceptance, allowing them to thrive and become cooperative rather than oppositional. And it gives adults the opportunity to become more accepting, loving, and self-aware.Magnificent!!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful starter book
This is by far one of the best parenting books on the market. Other parents have asked us for book titles on our style of parenting. This is a great starter book for anyone looking to go deeper into their relationship with their children and explore the heart of parenting. We are so happy we found this 4 years ago. Only wish it would have been published sooner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Finally! I am a researcher. Before our 9 month old was even born I think we had read over 20 books on parenting. My husband and I are both only children and started our family in our late 30's. Before Nicky was born we thought we had it all figured out...boy were we wrong. Then on a whim my husband found this book. I have never felt so at peace and empowered not only as a parent but as a person. If you are looking for the easy way out or for specific techniques to control your child or their behavior this is not the book for you. There are tons of writers who can help with that. However, if you are looking to raise a confident loving independent child who can express themselves and become who they really are...not what you want them to be... then read this book! By examining your own motivations and childhood experiences, you become able to truly be a parent to your child. And isn't that what we want...a child that says thank you and please and is generous and kind because they want to be that type of person? That is the kind of person we want to raise...and continue to become ourselves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book is a must for parents who feel like they are at their wits end with their ADD or ADHD (or just generally badly behaved!) child.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful!!!
I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far it has been so helpful. I've got a 7 year old and a 4 year old and it's been quite enlightning!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I am both a pediatric OT and a parent of a child with ADHD.What I love most about this book is that it gives both the parent's perspective and the child's perspective. The child in this book could not be more like my son.It brought tears to my eyes when I first read it. It is a must read for any parent or person working with a child who has ADHD.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for Basic Behavior Modification NOT for special needs
I liked the book in that it offers practical Behavior Modification tools. For parents who have never tried to use Behavior Modification or who haven't tried Behavioral therapy, this book is a great place to learn. For parents of children when more severe behavioral problems, this book would be overwhelming.

Sometimes, you have to start 'small' in behavior modification, such as is recommended by Dr.Greene in The Explosive Child. Rather than having lists of rules, sometimes parents and therapists have to focus on one behavior at a time, making sure that particular behavior is serious enough to warrant the attention it is getting. I do like the mention of Social Skills training for children with ADHD and the recognition that this kind of training might not be possible witout handling behavioral issues first.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ANSWER TO A PARENT'S PRAYER!
I bought this book recently to see if there was anything I could do to bring Peace into our chaotic household, and have found it to be amazingly accurate and very user-friendly.As I read the first few chapters, I was literally wondering if they had installed secret cameras in my house, because the authors were describing our life so accurately. With 5 children under the age of 12, of course there is always going to be some chaos, but when you add ADHD and BiPolar Disorder to the mix, it becomes a whole different story. The tips in each chapter and the 'Pointers for Parenting' were extremely helpful, but I especially liked that they included quotes from the author's son, who also struggled with ADHD- it was great to read a child's perspective on things.I highly recommend this book to any parent out there with a special needs child, or just a plain old defiant adolescent. It has made a positive impact on our lives, and I am very thankful to have found it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting strong willed child
I have found this book to of the utmost help with my 5 year old grandchild that I have in my charge. Even with her going to kennedy krieger for theropy, there are things and activities I now can do on my own. I have learned so much. Plus the book is an easy read. No PHD needed

5-0 out of 5 stars I found the missing instruction manual that should have come with my daughter!
I found it very useful and comforting to know that A - there are others just like her, we are not alone! And B - it works! While I never want to break her wonderful spirit, there were times that I wondered if we would ever make it through. We did, with the help of this book and most of all by changing MY behavior. It truly does take the whole family's participation and willingness to change their behavior and reactions in order to change the 'strong-willed' child's behavior. Thank you for giving us these tools!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting the strongwilled child
This book really helped me see that my grandchild has hope and it worked as soon as I started using the knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immediate results
This is one amazing book. I've recommended it to just about every parent I know, especially ones having problems with their child. Most parents want to be good parents. Not all parents know how.

I was at my wit's end with my then 5 year old. When I was done with the book, I found myself with a sweet little boy. What a difference parenting style can make.

Parenting the Strong-Willed Child doesn't just tell us what we know (positive reinforcement, consistency, etc.), it teaches how to do it right. It is a five week program, and if you're dedicated, it will work. I decided I was going to do it exactly as prescribed and I saw results from the very first week. In fact, each week, I noted improvement and that was what motivated me to finish the program.

This program is well worth the effort and cost. I am forever grateful to the authors who helped me completely change my relationship with my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winning Cooperation from Your Child!: A Comprehensive Method to Stop Defiant and Aggressive Behavior in Children
An absolute MUST READ for any parent of an ODD child. There needs to be a warning:THIS IS NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH OR FOR PARENTS NOT WILLING TO CHANGE because the author does spend time 'talking to' the parents about how THEY may first have to change in order for the child to change. Some people may take offense to this, thinking they are being 'blamed' for their child's behaviors. However, the message isn't one of finger-pointing.Instead, what the author is saying is that as the 'adult,' we may need to change our behavior and/or approach to this child in order for the child to change.Typcially, parents and ODD kids find themselves in a perpetual cycle ... the child misbehaves (albeit out of his control,) and the parent responds with traditional punishments and consequences; the child's frustration level increases (as s/he was not in control of the behavior to begin with) and then continues to misbehave, which results in additional punishments and consequences, leaving the child with a sense of doom and total failing, thus losing an 'incentive' to behave, and the parents feel like failures as they can't control their child. At some point, the cycle needs to be broken ... a change is needed. As the adult (the person in control, in charge) we are more in a position to change ... to break the cycle. It is not saying that the parents are at fault or are to blame. It is saying that as the ADULT person in the relationship, we need to take a different tactic or approach with the child. If we do, our child can/will change. To not be willing to do that, the parent is expecting the child to do all the changing (but not teaching them how to do that.)The book needs to be read to be totally understood, and read with an open mind. What I can and will say that I read this initially when my child (now 15) was 7 or 8 ... and it changed my life. The book became my bible, and I've recommended it to others over the years.I've read it and re-read it, and implemented the techniques.I went from having a child with such severe rage that the doctors were talking hospitalization ... to having a teenager who gets good grades, is a nice kid, is an avid baseball player and a black belt in karate ... who will become a loyal and productive member of society. For anyone to disregard this book for fear of being told that part of their child's behavior MAY be contributed to their own behaviors or their reactions to their child's is a shame, because anyone who can read this book with an open mind has a far greater chance of success ... for their child ... and it is their child that is the subject of the book and should be the focus of their attention.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Winning Cooperation..." has not won me at all
To be honest, the only reason I have given this book one star is that I could not give it zero stars.I have read many, many parenting books and am totally unimpressed by this one.First of all, the book places 100% of blame on the parents of these children for their defiant behavior. While this may be the case in some situations, it ignores situations where parents are fostering or adopting children that have been damaged by previous caregivers, and it does not acknowledge in any way that brain dysfunction may be present and responsible for the behavior of many oppositional and defiant children today.Secondly, the strategies presented in this book are not applicable or appropriate for children that are not attached:only a child that is appropriately attached to an adult figure would think and problem solve in the manner described by this author.Strategies presented in this book rely heavily on praise and positive social enforcement; a child that is unattached and lacks conscience is unlikely to respond to such attempts to "win" them.In fact, these oppositional and defiant children are not motivated by praise at all!I am an educated professional individual, parenting a very difficult child, and I found this book to be insulting and a complete waste of my time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST for all parents.
I have read SO many parenting books and this one rates up in the top 3, along with Parenting with Love and Logic and Raising Your Spirited Child. This book isn't just for parents of defiant/aggressive kids but for all parents. It is comprehensive, but simple to read without alot of redundancy to wade through. The author doesn't have any elaborate, complicated plans for you to follow, just practical, realistic but excellent parenting advice. If you are ready to follow his guidelines, you are ready to have a closer and healthier relationship with your child. ... Product Description
"Guiding Children's Behavior" is a valuable guide to behavior management for teachers, parents, and other caregivers. The authors advocate using "developmental discipline" to individualize discipline practices for children - from birth through elementary school. Starting with infancy, the authors explain that typical daily routines are prime opportunities for parents and childcare providers to introduce limits to very young children. Adults are encouraged to look at a child's negative behaviors such as saying, "no," or hitting within the context of normal child development. The authors then look at ways to guide the behavior of preschoolers and kindergartners who are dealing with new experiences outside of the family. Next, they discuss developmental discipline with school-age children, offering approaches for older children who are grappling with social, emotional, and physical changes. The authors also examine the effectiveness of frequently used discipline methods, such as time-outs and coerced apologies. The final chapter emphasizes the importance of teachers and parents working together to create more consistency between home and school. ... Read more
