Freelancer Out Exodus - 10:12 am Yes, I am a day late considering this wonderful piece of news, but Microsoft and Digital Anvil's space combat/trading simulator, Freelancer has been released to stores nationwide. Yesterday, a couple buds and I decided to ransack the store, grabbing the first copies that hadn't even touched the shelves just yet, and so far we're pretty pleased. The demo was more than a handful of fun, and the game itself is overall very solid. I'm impressed by how many improvements Roberts' was able to squeeze in, even though Freelancer itself isn't revolutionary by nature. Either way, grab the game if you enjoyed Wind Commander, Starlancer, or Privateer. It's worth your money.

In 1935 Albert Einstein and two colleagues, Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen (EPR) developed a thought experiment to demonstrate what they felt was a lack of completeness in quantum mechanics. This so-called "EPR paradox" has led to much subsequent, and still on-going, research. This article is an introduction to EPR, Bell's inequality, and the real experiments that have attempted to address the interesting issues raised by this discussion. One of the principal features of quantum mechanics is that not all the classical physical observables of a system can be simultaneously known with unlimited precision, even in principle. Instead, there may be several sets of observables which give qualitatively different, but nonetheless complete (maximal possible) descriptions of a quantum mechanical system. These sets are sets of "good quantum numbers," and are also known as "maximal sets of commuting observables." Observables from different sets are "noncommuting observables". A well known example is position and momentum. You can put a subatomic particle into a state of well-defined momentum, but then you cannot know where it is. It's not just a matter of your inability to measure, but rather, an intrinsic property of the particle. Conversely, you can put a particle in a definite position, but then its momentum is completely ill-defined. You can also create states of intermediate knowledge of both observables: if you confine the particle to some arbitrarily large region of space, you can define the momentum more and more precisely. But you can never know both, exactly, at the same time.

Extractions: After what people would call an "EverQuest Addiction," both my passion and skepticism have flourished for the massive online role-playing genre for many reasons. In general, their unmatched and endless gameplay intrigues me to play for "just another minute" - which, as we all have known, is a couple more hours. However, the online society, politics, and the group known as "lamers" plague these games as a result. The online role-playing game has been evolving at a snail's pace, but as each game is released, the genre is improving. One giant step in the evolutionary process will occur with Horizons: Empires of Istaria as Artifact has promised a whole new dimension to the most addictive, non-linear, and fascinating genres in the gaming industry. It is not going to take a couple pages to completely explain Horizons' boundaries from the graphics to the gameplay, however, these first few pages will be filled with information about the races, classes, cities, and the vast world of Istaria; then the rest will be the focus on the actual in-game features. Introduction Although this paper deals with a subject solidly in the physical sciences. some preliminary discussion must be made of philosophy. Hopefully this discussion of philosophy will provide the proper background for understanding the dilemma posed by the problem being discussed. The human race, developing in the reasonably constant environment on this planet, acquired a brain with thought processes that were highly accommodated to the flood of information from the senses. Within the human thought processes this flood of information, in the form of photons into the eyes. sound vibrations into the ears, tactile sensations from the skin, came to represent the reality of the physical world. Along with this concept of reality. humans acquired. as part of their increasingly complex and useful thought processes some other concepts that helped them adapt and to prosper. One of the important concepts that the brain acquired was that of causality. Things happened for a reason. For example. I he house was at the edge of the village because your uncle had it there before going off to war/ The river was flooded because heavy rains increased the amount of water flowing down the channel. The boat floated because the water it displaced weighed more than the boat. This concept of causality was even extended to circumstances for which no direct cause was readily apparent. Perhaps a large rock well had been there for as long as anyone could remember, but people still believed that there was a time when it wasn't there and that something had caused it to be there. Some things could not be explained early on, but reasonable explanations were found later, leading to the conviction that, ultimate explanations would be found for all physical phenomena. The notion of causality was a useful one that would carry the human race well in the study of science right up to the point that people started to study the physical that existed beyond their basic senses.

Counter to common intuition, it is possible to mix two losing games into a winning combination. This is a good news. But do not rub your hands just yet. The theory does not apply to casino games. Learning about it all must be its own reward. On the positive side but shaky ground, Sandra Blakeslee reported last year in NY Times that Dr. Sergei Maslov from Brookhaven National Laboratory had shown that if an investor simultaneously shared capital between two losing stock portfolios, capital would increase rather than decrease. His name was George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (pronounced "gur-jeef" or "gur-jeff"), and he proved to be one of the most challenging, paradoxical, and enigmatic spiritual teachers of our time. His principal biographer called him "a fraud, a liar, a cheat, a scoundrel" - and then went on to note his "sympathy, compassion, charity," and his "eccentric code of honor."1 He is chiefly remembered for imparting, through the most extraordinary and difficult methods, the fundamentals of an esoteric system known as the Fourth Way - also called, austerely, "the Work." What is this Fourth Way? Gurdjieff said there were three comparatively common ways to spiritual attainment: the way of the fakir, that is, the man who masters his physical organism to the point where he can, say, stand "motionless in the same position for hours, days, months, or years."2 The second is the way of the monk, the man who masters his emotions through prayer and devotional practices. The third way is the way of the yogi, the man who gains control of his mind. Yet, Gurdjieff believed, none of these ways is complete in itself. A man, for example, may master his mind - he may genuinely know something - but may be incapable of putting it into action. Or his emotions may be developed, but his intellect may remain at a primitive state. To compound these difficulties, each of these first three ways requires withdrawal from the world, from day-to-day life.

To a brand new Time Travel novel with a fresh concept: TimeShift Time Travel and Paradox When one reads Science Fiction there is hardly anything so fascinating and yet so frustrating as the 'Time Travel' story. Fascinating, because it often explores the question 'what would things have been like if...?" or "if one could change a small thing like the position of a grain of sand would that have large effects in the future?". These questions are at the heart of personal or historical regret. Suppose Hitler were never born. Would this be a better or worse world today? Would it be a different world 100 years from now or would the forces of history push towards a singular result? The stories are often frustrating due in part to a vaguely spelled out theory of time which often allows events that are confusing, contradictory and paradoxical. A science fiction story should not leave us with more questions than it resolves. For a reader of Fantasy, this may be acceptable, for Fantasy is not supposed to be taken as explanatory, prophetic or possibly realistic. But a good science fiction story should have explanations that are not incoherent and if in the story there is something which is claimed to be impossible, then there should be an explanation for that also. At the heart of the problem is the 'Time Travel paradox' which goes something like this. Suppose a person travels to a time before she was born and breaks a causal chain that led to the traveler's birth. This problem has been commonly explored by asking 'What if you killed your own grandmother before she first conceived?' (Curiously the problem is never expressed in terms of killing your own mother). The apparent paradox is then of a logical sort: P entails NOT P and NOT P entails P. If you kill your grandmother then you would not be born, which in turn would bring it about that you not travel into the past, thus you would not kill your grandmother, thus you would be born causing you to again travel into the past to kill your grandmother.... ad infinitum.
