5-0 out of 5 stars A necessary book, even if one knows no more than calculus or real analysis.
I myself find it unfortunate that Robinson chose Rusellian "type theory" in order to create "enalargements" which still retain "prenex normal forms" of wffs.Especially given that he had already published a ground-breaking book on Model Theory. But once I accepted this (easy to do), it was fascinating to witness the setting forth the foundations for a precise, exact definition of the infinitesimal.Of this work Gödel wrote that the lack of any serious definition of the infinitesimal ("The ghost of a departed number", wrote Bishop Berkeley) over the course of 430 years will generate over this current century much-needed examination as to why the infinitesimal escaped all rigorous foundation.
Indeed.Especially since the reals were defined as either Dedekind cuts or Cauchy limits, yet the real numbers these two ways of generating them turn out not to be the same set of real numbers. ... Read more

Chapters: People From Wałbrzych, Abraham Robinson, Sebastian Janikowski, Krzesimir Dębski, Urszula Włodarczyk, Piotr Włodarczyk, Bartosz Kurek, Agnieszka Wieszczek, Ryszard Wawryniewicz, Julian Kwit, Rusinowa. Excerpt: Wabrzych - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The German name Waldenburg (meaning "forest castle") refers to the castle Nowy Dwór, whose ruins stand south of the city; the name came to be used for the entire settlement. The Polish name Wabrzych comes from the German name Walbrich, a late medieval linguistic variation of the older names "Wallenberg" or "Walmberg". According to the website of the Wabrzych City Office, the city's predecessor was an early medieval Slavic settlement named Lasogród ("forest castle"), whose inhabitants engaged in hunting, honey gathering, and later agriculture. The website further says Lasogród lated developed into a defensive fort, the remains of which were destroyed in the 19th century during expansion of the city. Historians Hugo Weczerka and John Koch say that no archaeological or written records support a Slavic settlement or the existence of a castle before the late 13th century. They say that during the Middle Ages the area of Wabrzych was part of the Silesian Przesieka, a dense, unpopulated forest. According to a writing from 1667 by jurist and historian Ephraim Ignatius Naso, Wabrzych already existed as a small village in 1191, but the source is not reliable and the possibility is also rejected by Weczerka. According to Weczerka, Wabrzych was founded between 1290 and 1293 on a cleared spot in the mountains near the castle of Nowy Dwór (German: ), and first mentioned as Waldenberc in 1305. Nowy Dwór, probably built around the same time, was first mentioned as "newe haus" in 1365, and built by Bolko I of t... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=74606 ... Read more
