5-0 out of 5 stars a key document
First of all, all astrologers should thank AFA to have translated the key parts of the encyclopedia of J.-B. Morin. Isn't it pity that the master piece of a key astrologer cannot be found in a french translation as well? Congratulations, Astrology is well alive in the USA.
Now, the book 23 is definetely no an introduction to the revolutions (solar and lunar), but an unavoidable reference for the trained astrologer. It is not also a cookbook but it needs a lot of personnal work to introduce the main concepts in the daily work of the astrologer. The freshmen in astrology can indeed find the content somewhat difficult to read.
On the other hand, what is really interesting is the fact that, when Morin was writing Astrologia Gallica, the precision of the positions of a lunar return were at times questionable. Amazing: this book is not only a translation, but contains nice references and even control of the accuracy of charts. Well done, Well done...

5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive reference on Solar Returns
James Holden has done an excellent job translating Morin's rather terse academic Latin into modern English.Book 23 details Morin's system of delineating solar and lunar revolutions. It gives a clear glimse into the mind of this brilliant 17th century astrological master. The reading is slow going but worth the effort.Morin always interprets the return in terms of the natal promise and the current directions, eclipses, transits, fixed star contacts, etc.I came away with a greater appreciation of Morin's encyclopedic knowledge of astrology and his ability to put all the various predictive techniques in perspective. ... Product Description
This book is an English translation of Morin's treatise on Primary Directions, which constitutes Book 22 of his Astrologia Gallica, with appendices containing supplementary material relating to Book 22, and addenda containing fundamental astrological principles, in particular the Table of Universal Rulerships of the Planets from Book 13, the Universal Laws of Judgments of Solar and Lunar Returns from Book 23, and Aphorisms stating the Principal Laws of Transits along with Rules for the Prediction of Future Events from Book 24. This translation supplements Richard S. Baldwin's translation of Book 21 on Determinations (also published by the AFA). The two translations together provide a core subset of the theory of Natal Astrology set forth by J-B Morin (1583-1656), the leading figure of French astrology. Morin's theory is based upon the use of determinations and accidental significators. Thus, it differs radically from the common theory that largely ignores derived houses and uses universal significators. Also, it is event-oriented rather than esoteric or psychological. The translator, James Herschel Holden, is Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers and has been especially interested in the history of astrology. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Astrologia Gallica book 22
This is not a book for beginning astrologers by any means. It is translated from formal latin so it almost takes an English major to understand the sentence structure. It is very hard to read - so no: I would not recommend it.However, it is required reading for a class that I'm taking, and hidden in the dense concepts and dense English are some incredibly profound insights. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have
Though a rather thin book, its content is dense and highly interesting. Probably best combined with the other books of the series, it gives a deep and detailed insight in a coherent system of thought. You need not agree with it overall, but at least you can almost certainly enhance your own understanding of astrology and its techniques. ... Read more

Excerpt: Jean-Baptiste Morin (February 23, 1583 November 6, 1656), also known by his Latin pseudonym as Morinus, was a French mathematician, astrologer, and astronomer. Born in Villefranche-sur-Saône, in the Beaujolais, he began studying philosophy at Aix-en-Provence at the age of 16. He studied medicine at Avignon in 1611 and received his medical degree two years later. He was employed by the Bishop of Boulogne from 1613 to 1621 and was sent to Germany and Hungary during this time. He served the bishop as an astrologer and also visited mines and studied metals. He subsequently worked for the Duke of Luxembourg until 1629. Morin published a defense of Aristotle in 1624. He also worked in the field of optics, and continued to study in astrology. He worked with Pierre Gassendi on observational astronomy. In 1630, Morin was appointed professor of mathematics at the Collège Royal, a post he held until his death. A firm believer of the idea that the Earth remained fixed in space, Morin is best known for being opponent of Galileo and the latter's ideas. He continued his attacks after the Trial of Galileo. Morin seems to have been a rather contentious figure, as he also attacked Descartes' ideas after meeting the philosopher in 1638. These disputes isolated Morin from the scientific community at large. Morin believed that improved methods of solving spherical triangles had to be found and that better lunar tables were needed. Morin attempted to solve the longitude problem. In 1634, he proposed hi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4071848 ... Read more

Read more

This book is an English translation of Book 24 of the Astrologia Gallica, in which Morin explains the proper use of Transits to pinpoint the time when a predicted event will occur. He first criticizes the various types of symbolic directions used by other astrologers of his day and then sets forth his own method of prediction with numerous examples. The nature and time of an event in a person's life can be determined from his Natal Horoscopes, its Primary Directions, Solar and Lunar Returns and their Primary Directions, and is sometimes possible to determine the exact Day when the event signified by a radical Primary Directions will occur. ... He first criticizes the validity and use of Interrogations and then explains his method of making Elections with several examples. 4-0 out of 5 stars A little treasure from the Renaissance
Jean Baptiste Morin has been one of the most famous french astrologers in history. He has re-laid the fundamentals of astrology after 14 centuries from the time of Ptolemy. His great opus "Astrologia Gallica" consisting of 26 books is being translated since some 10 years from the scholar latin into the english language, revealing much of its secrets now to the new generation astrologers.
This book-16 is on rays and aspects of the planets. It is not a recipe book like there are so many nowsdays, but it is an in-depth analysis why aspects exist and what kind of aspect realy have an influence on the birth chart.
The book consists of 3 sections of which section-1 is largest. Here it is made plain to the reader that aspects between planets should be measured from their real position in their orbit and not those which are projected on the ecliptic. For this some geometry is used by Morin to clarify these concepts. After all Morin was a mathematician.
Then he explains which aspects there are and how they come to work. Also of the orb of the planets are explained. Yes, the orbs of the planets! In ancient times and in the renaissance only planets had orbs. Aspects did not have orbs! This was invented by Alan Leo in the early 20th century.
This is very important for everyone to know.
Section-2 is very interesting about application and separation of planets and how the aspects can be cut off from their influence when 3 or more planets interact in several ways.
Section-3 throws a complete new light on the combustion of planets when they are in the vicinity of the Sun. This I have never read before in the many ancient books I already have read. For me personally this section is the most revealing one of this book.
So here we have another little treasure from Jean Baptiste Morin, like there have already been published more of his.
Very worthwhile for every serious student in astrology. Don't expect recipies here in this book, you have to think yourself and that is what itall about in astrology.

This book is an English translation of Book 21 of the Astrologia Gallica, in which Morin sets forth his method of horoscope interpretation. In the first section of the book he reviews the methods of other astrologers and explains why they are insufficient. In the second section he explains his own method, which is both different from and superior to the traditional methods. Morin was a physician who became the most renowned of all French astrologers. He was appointed Royal Mathematician to King Louis XIII and was summoned to be present at the birth of the royal heir, the future King Louis XIV. His master work, the Astrologia Gallica, was published in Paris in 1661. It consists of a Preface and 26 individual books in the scholarly Latin of the 17th century. Many of these Books are now available in English translation, but Book 21 should be read first as it contains the fundamental explanation of the Morin method. Richard S. Baldwin made this English translation directly from the Latin text. ... Read more
