Product Description

Engaging letters from a gifted and perceptive Confederate cavalry officer.

This book contains the letters of George Knox Miller who served as a line officer in the Confederate cavalry and participated in almost all of the major campaigns of the Army of Tennessee. He was, clearly, a very well-educated young man. Born in 1836 in Talladega, Alabama, he developed a great love for reading and the theater and set his sights upon getting an education that would lead to a career in law or medicine; meanwhile he worked as an apprentice in a painting firm to earn tuition. Miller then enrolled in the University of Virginia, where he excelled in his studies.

Eloquent, bordering on the lyrical, the letters provide riviting first-hand accounts of cavalry raids, the monotony of camp life, and the horror of battlefield carnage. Miller gives detailed descriptions of military uniforms, cavalry tactics, and prison conditions. He conveys a deep commitment to the Confederacy, but he was also critical of Confederate policies that he felt hindered the army's efforts. Dispersed among these war-related topics is the story of Miller's budding relationship with Celestine "Cellie" McCann, the love of his life, whom he would eventually marry. Together, the letters offer significan insight into the life, heart, mind, and attitudes of an intelligent, educated, young mid-19th-century white Southerner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dunk and Egg part II
Gotta love these stories, Dunk is Dunk and Egg is Egg but Marvel does a great job without compremissing the over all story.I did however picture the section of the braid being shorter in my mind.If you like G.R.R.M.'s stuff this is a fun read only second to original short story print version without Marvel's fine work.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good translation of the written short story
I'm a big fan of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series of books - the novels (at least, up to A Storm of Swords) have been uniformly superb. A Feast for Crows is in my opinion weaker, but still a worthy entry in the saga.

That said, Martin's two short stories - Tales of Dunk and Egg - are brilliantly written and thoroughly enjoyable romps through Westeros. The plotting isn't as Machiavellian, owing to the slow pace, but it's a vastly entertaining window into the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, and is a good primer to get someone who is unfamiliar to the books an idea of how the world works (although they may be slightly lost amidst the backstory.)

The Sword Sword is the second Tale of Dunk and Egg, and arguably contains more of the signature scheming, plotting and carefully paced reveals of the main novels. However, I enjoyed The Hedge Knight (the first short story) more, if only because I enjoy the entire tourney 'scene' in Westeros, and Martin writes it exceptionally well.

Even though this is the short story presented in graphic novel format, I believe there is no real loss of the detail or depth when compared to the written version. In fact, certain scenes benefit from the graphical medium.

The art is uniformly well done and serves the story well.

All in all, a must have for fans of A Song of Ice and Fire - especially if you like graphic novels!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a *Graphic* Novel
I ordered both of the Hedge Knight graphic novels thinking they were actual novels, so I was quite surprised when I opened up my Amazon package to find comics/graphic novels instead. It may have been mentioned somewhere, but I didn't see any description to that effect, so I didn't realize it.

Luckily, my husband (who I bought them for) is a fan of graphic novels in addition to being a fan of the author. So, it turned out to be OK.

I just wanted to say for anyone not already aware, these are GRAPHIC novels. :)

Husband enjoyed them, and is looking forward to the third installment (if it ever gets published...) :P

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
Great art, great story. I hope there is more to come. Anyone who enjoys the Song of Fire and Ice series of novels should pick these up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite enjoyable quick read
If you are a fan of George RR Martin, and have read everything he has managed to finish of The Song of Ice and Fire series, this graphic novel will be an enjoyable different perspective of a world you are already familiar with.

The Hedge Knight lacks the complexities of the novels, but story of Egg and Donk is more a comedy then that of typical fantasy.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great graphic novel but inferior to later editions.
*** My rating is for THIS edition.I give the actual book 5 stars. This is the first edition graphic novel of "The Hedge Knight."A year after this The Hedge Knight - Second Edition [Graphic Novel] was published, which contained a few new pages of artwork for some of the individual characters.A year after that Hedge Knight Volume 1 Premiere HC (Book Market Edition) (Hedge Knight) was published, which is hardcover, a little higher quality, and contains a few pages of artwork on the house sigils. The Hardcover edition is superior to both of those and should be purchased instead of this edition. There is minimal difference in price. ***

"The Hedge Knight" is a novella based on the "Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R.R. Martin, and takes place 100 years before the events depicted in A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1).This is the first book regarding Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" stories, and follow the exploits of a Hedge Knight (basically a knight who is not employed) named Dunk and his squire named Egg. THIS IS A GRAPHIC NOVEL (comic book) based on the story that was originally published in Legends: Short Novels By The Masters of Modern Fantasy, and follows Ser Dunk as he enters a jousting tournament only to find he is soon fighting for more than just recognition.

For anyone who has read the Song of Ice and Fire series, "The Hedge Knight" follows the same writing style.Although the characters are new, most of the names have been mentioned by Martin in his previous books.I found that I had to do a little research after I read it to understand the families and who exactly the characters were as they relate to present events, but once I did I was pretty impressed with how well Martin had tied the stories together, as this novella focuses on the Targaryen family, who is only mentioned according to their past exploits in A Game of Thrones. That being said, no knowledge of the later books is necessary to enjoy the story, and fantasy, medieval, and comic fans should enjoy "A Hedge Knight" as a standalone graphic novel. It definitely makes it more enjoyable to have read the other series going into it though.

Although I am familiar with comics, this is the first graphic novel I have ever purchased. The adaptation is written by Ben Avery, who does a fantastic job of accurately translating the novella to this medium. The artwork is by Mike S. Miller and is even more exceptional. The characters in "The Hedge Knight" are not as developed as those from Martin's other books and this story doesn't have as much suspense or the plot twists we've come to expect, but as a short story it certainly entertains and provides another look at the world Martin has created, as well as giving insight into some of the names Martin has only touched upon in previous books.Given the choice, I am also glad I read it for the first time in the graphic novel, rather than the short story that was printed in the Legends anthology.

The Dunk and Egg stories are continued in the short story, "The Sworn Sword," which can be found in Legends II: Dragon, Sword, and King and will be out as a comic book in the Summer of 2007.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid adaptation of Martin's short novel
I was a bit skeptical when I heard that someone was going to adapt George R.R. Martin's Hedge Knight short story into graphic novel format, but I love comics so I gave it a try.

The original Hedge Knight story, which appeared in the Legends anthology, was my introduction to Martin and his epic Song of Ice and Fire series. To be blunt, his writing ruined me for just about every other fantasy author. Nearly every other fantasy writer pales in comparison.

So how did the Hedge Knight, a relatively straightforward tale about a knight who attends a tourney and finds himself entangled in the affairs of princes, translate into comic book form?

While Ben Avery's adaptation covers all of the main points of the story, it just doesn't have the same feeling. He does an admirable job, but it's still missing something intangible that the prose story gives the reader. I wish I could explain it better, but the feeling you get after reading this volume is similar to when you see a movie that has been adapted from one of your favorite books. It never quite measures up.

Mike Miller's artwork is the book's saving grace. His renderings of Martin's characters matched the pictures I had in my head from reading the story so closely it was downright eerie. From the epic battles to the mundane sequences, Miller's artwork is a major enhancement to the overall storytelling. Seeing his interpretation of Martin's characters is more than worth the price of admission.

This trade paperback collects the entire Hedge Knight limited series, plus a new story that leads into the second Hedge Knight story from Legends II. It may not please all George R.R. Martin fans (especially those who couldn't figure out that this was a graphic novel ), but it is a worthy attempt at adapting the story, and is well worth checking out.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT a novel!!!!
This is a COMIC BOOK.For those RR Martin fans please understand that this is a graphic novel. . aka comic book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tale of Chivalry
To begin with, I have enjoyed the Song of Fire and Ice from the beginning, and I have been itching for the new book for some time. When I heard there was a graphic novel, I was both interested and disappointed. The first because it was another tale in a very interesting setting. The second because A Feast of Crows had been running late and would rather have had the book instead of the graphic novel. Upon reading the graphic novel, I found all of my fears allayed and that the book does more than just add to the setting of the Song of Fire and Ice.

I was pleased to find that the novel used figures that had been mentioned in previous book. It allowed me not just to hear about them through other character's accounts and histories, but I was able to 'see' them for myself. The book added further depth to the already expansive world.

I also discovered that the novel was based on a short story previously published in an anthology in LEGENDS, edited by Robert Silverburg. The story had been adapted to the comic book format later. Knowledge that the novel was based on a previously published story allayed any frustration I was feeling about Feast.

Most importantly though, beyond my obsession with the Song of Fire and Ice, the story was an excellent display of chivalry and character. How the virtues of knighthood of protecting the innocent and poor combat with the corruption that grows among the nobility who make up this same order. The character is taught as a Hedge Knight he is the truest form of a knight, with no other allegiance than to his vows.

I highly recommend this book not just for fantasy enthusiasts, but it is also a good moral tale, which is not necessarily straight forward. ... Read more

Product Description

George Washington comes alive in this fascinating activity book that introduces the leader to whom citizens turned again and again—to lead them through eight long years of war, to guide them as they wrote a new Constitution, and to act as the new nation’s first executive leader. Children will learn how, shortly after his death in 1799, people began transforming George Washington from a man into a myth. But Washington was a complex individual who, like everyone, had hopes and fears, successes and failures. In his early 20s, for instance,Washington’s actions helped plunge Great Britain and France into war. He later fought for liberty and independence, yet owned slaves himself (eventually freeing them in his will). This book weaves a rich tapestry of Washington’s life, allowing kids to connect with his story in 21 hands-on projects based on his experiences and the times in which he lived. Children will learn how to tie a cravat, write with a quill pen, follow animal tracks, sew a lady’s cap, plant a garden, roll a beeswax candle, play a game of Quoits, and make a replica of Washington’s commander-in-chief flag. The text includes a time line, glossary, websites, travel resources, and a reading list for further study.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real George Washington
George Washington for Kids mixes facts, fun activities and first hand accounts in an engaging and appealing way. By interweaving personal bits about the man behind the legend, readers can begin to feel a connection to the real person, which is such a critical element in connecting students to history. Learning that George Washington made sure British General Howe's lost dog was returned to him after a battle will stay with students much longer than the names of the battles the two men fought, and give them a better understanding of the character of the man. The book covers Washington's entire life, and the accounts of his early years are fascinating. The activities are varied enough to fit multiple interests, and most can be done with a minimum of adult help.It would be an excellent addition to any classroom or homeschool bookshelf. ... Product Description

Moonlight Serenade, Sunrise Serenade, Little Brown Jug, In the Mood... These and other memorable tunes endeared Glenn Miller to millions in the Swing Era and all who recall those times. After playing trombone and arranging for leading orchestras of the Dorsey brothers, Ray Noble, Ben Pollack, and Red Nichols, Glenn Miller formed his own "sweet" band, which from 1938 to 1942 achieved widespread popularity second only to Benny Goodman's. Miller learned all he could from these and other bands like Jimmie Lunceford's and Artie Shaw's, going on to create a uniquely rich sound with clarinet over four saxes and four trombones ("three-part harmony sounds too thin," he once exclaimed). Simon tells of both the successes and hard times of Miller's illustrious career, up to his celebrated Army Air Force band and his untimely death.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book in OK condition.I expected to be a little less "handled"
The title says about all I have to say.Not a bad deal just expected the book to be a little "tighter"I using it as a reference tool now as I have already read it from a "crisp" copy from the library. So it's OK.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Enjoyable Biography-A Must-Have for Big Band Fans
During the 1970's some of the liner notes of re-issued Glenn Miller music engaged in a good bit of "Miller Bashing." It seemed like it was fashionable to find anyone who had ever been disgruntled about working for Glenn and interview them. That was in direct contrast to the syrupy portrayal of Glenn in the movie "The Glenn Miller Story" (which is still very enjoyable with all of it's inaccuracies). George T.'s biography of Miller stands out as a beacon of accuracy in a sea of extremist hyperbole.

Simon and Miller were friends before and during the peak of Miller's popularity. Simon even recorded with Miller on a few Decca sides before Glenn formed a band with stable personnel; and Simon was one of the section drummers in Miller's Army Air Force Band during WWII. However, George did not go to England, but remained behind to head up the V-Disc recording program. I say all this by way of giving the author's impeccable credentials. Simon was the best man for the job.

This biography is balanced, fact filled, and completely enjoyable. While Simon clearly likes Miller, he doesn't mind mentioning a couple of times when they experienced rough spots in their friendship. Simon is able to use his relationship with Miller to paint an intimate picture of Glenn Miller the man, as well as GM the musician.

This book works on a number of levels, and is a must read for anyone who wants to know more about the Big Band Era. Thank goodness it is still in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Glenn Miller
I've always loved the music of Glenn Miller. Especially being a swing dancer. What makes this book so great is Mr. Simon was there with Glenn and the orchestra, pitching in on drums for backup, and involved in every aspect. He was associated with Glenn during those great years of the Big Bands. His personal way of talking to the reader makes you feel like you were there, too. You become intimately involved in his life, through scores of wonderul photos, diary entries, and interviews with others who knew Glenn well. You also are introduced to many of the band members. After reading this book, I feel like I know not just Glenn, but Marion Hutton, Trigger Alpert, and all the other wonderful musicians who made the most wonderful music in the history of the world.

I used to wish I could travel back in time to the swing era, and witness bands like Glenn Miller's live. Now, after reading this book, I feel like I have. ... Read more

Shifting between fact and fiction, between the experience of the real and our projections, fantasies, and desires, Janet Cardiff's audio-video and multimedia installations explore the complexity and vertiginous nature of subjectivity in a highly technological world. They are interactive pieces where visitors are asked to touch, listen, smell, and often move through an environment shaped both by our perceptions and by the artist's alteration of them. With references to film noir, science fiction, cyber-punk and various other filmic genres, her works, often created in collaboration with husband George Bures Miller, address the constant need to negotiate between presence and loss of self, memory and experience, sensation and imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This was a great follow up to the first, and something that partially slaked my thirst for Westeros while waiting for A Dance With Dragons. A great Martin story, filled with all those "shades of gray" that he is so good a portraying.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm SO angry!
GRRRRR, I'm SO angry!Thought I was buying a book, but instead discovered that I'd bought a comic book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Dunk and Egg
This is the second book in the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his loyal squire, Egg. The land is suffering from a two-year drought. The lack of rain, combined with the unusually hot weather, create conditions that make it hard to get the land to produce food. Crops are dying, animals are dying, and people are dying. Our honorable traveling knight and his loyal squire have come out of the hedges to work in service to a local Lord, Ser Eustace Osgrey.

Trouble begins when a nearby stream, the only source of water for Ser Eustace's land, suddenly stopped flowing.Ser Dunk and Ser Bennis (another knight in service to Ser Eustace) travels upstream to determine the cause of the stoppage. They soon learn that the stream has been dammed by another landowner, the Lady Rohanne.Ser Dunk demands from the farm workers present at the site to dismantle the dam and allow the water to flow. The farmers refused the request and stated that they have been instructed by their Lady to dam the stream. The workers' refusal to cooperate causes Ser Bennis to lose his temper and cuts one of the men on the cheek with his sword.

The Lady Rohanne, known as the Red Spider, demands that Ser Bennis be delivered to her for punishment.Known for her harshness, the Lady Rohanne most likely would have handed out a very severe punishment.Ser Eustace refuses, and demands that the Lady dismantle the dam. Both Lord and Lady refuse to yield to the other.Violent bloodshed seemed inevitable. And so, our honorable hedge knight and his ever-resourceful squire (who is really Prince Aegon Targaryen V) must find a way to settle the matter with as little bloodshed as possible.

In my opinion, this second book is not quite as good as the first one. However, it is still an excellent tale.A must-read for fans of George R. R. Martin's epic series, "A Song of Ice and Fire".For here, we learn a little bit about the Targaryen family history. There are little bits of information here that will add to the pleasure of reading the main series. For example, Dunk notices that Egg is not at all bothered by the oppressive heat, even while wearing heavy woolen clothes! It has been alluded to in the main series that the Targaryens may have a very high tolerance for heat. This scene in Hedge Knight II adds evidence to this theory. In short, I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading description
THIS IS A GRAPHIC NOVEL! The problem is not the book -- it's the way it is marketed. From reading the description, I had no idea that this was essentially a fancy comic book. I was expecting ana actual novel. This got sent back for a refund. If you're looking for a graphic novel, this may be a good one (for all I know) but if you're expecting an actual novel, then you are being mislead.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great story continuation
Most of the time, when you see a number in the title of a book indicating that it is a sequel, you know it will be bad. This time is different. Hedge Knight II continues the story of Dunk the Hedge Knight and his squire Egg, in the same tradition as the first. Dunk is a good hearted man of honor who is treated with contempt due to his status. He holds firm to the values that he was taught, while he has every incentive not to. If you like the Dunk and Egg characters, this is a winner. If you don't, you won't like this one either. ... Read more
