4-0 out of 5 stars The good collections about complex domain O.D.E.
It arranged many papers about complex domain O.D.E. It open the door to this topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and instructive - with difficulties
After an Introduction, which provides the necessary fundamental facts with didactic skill, chapters concerning Existence and Uniqueness, and Singularities follow. After the 4th chapter dealing with Riccati's Equationthe main point are linear DE of second order. The book continues withchapters on special topics (7 Representation Thms, 8 Complex OscillationTheory, 9 Linear nth Order and Matrix DE, 10 The Schwarzian). At the endnonlinear DE are treated. The extensive field in the title is explaineddeeply and very lucidly yet on an elementary level. However, at some pointsthere are difficulties (e. g. some passages where the exposition is toobrief). The exercises at the end of every section, which are at least inpart easy, are very instructive. The index is good and the lists ofreferences include many original work which, however, are generally quiteold. Unfortunately there is no index of symbols. Chapter 9 on Linear nthOrder and Matrix DE is brilliant in my opinion. ... Read more

This famous work is a textbook that emphasizes the conceptual and historical continuity of analytic function theory. The second volume broadens from a textbook to a textbook-treatise, covering the ``canonical'' topics (including elliptic functions, entire and meromorphic functions, as well as conformal mapping, etc.) and other topics nearer the expanding frontier of analytic function theory. In the latter category are the chapters on majorization and on functions holomorphic in a half-plane. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding, rigorous classical treatment of complex variables
This book is by an outstanding master of the subject and a fine writer in the classical style.Hille treats the subject in detail, with many examples and historical references, but does not dumb the topic down, or render it soft. His treatment is more complete than many others for the serious beginner, since he proves such theorems as the one that having continuous partials satisfying the Cauchy Riemann equations implies holomorphicity, instead of just referring for this to the real variable case, which the student probably has never seen proved. He even proves a polygonal version of the jordan curve theorem in an appendix. His discussion gives the student a concrete feel for the subject by starting with serious examples such as fractional linear transformations, before going into theoretical development of integrals and power series.all that in volume I.Volume II is really thorough with a proof of the big Picard theorem, one of few places it is found in textbook form, and even some discussion ofriemann surfaces of algebraic curves.this book is a great bargain and of high quality for one who wants a thorough serious treatment of analytic functions, from scratch. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars not that good, but still necessary
I used this solutions manual along with the book itself for Calculus I, II and III. While I really like the calculus text book, this solutions manual is nowhere near as good. Firstly it only gives the solutions to odd numbered problems. Secondly, explanations are only good for the first few chapters, after that they start skipping a lot of steps, sometimes just giving you the final answer.

If I were to review it as a standalone text I would give it a 3 star rating. However, considering it is used in conjunction with the text itself for many calculus courses, I still think it is necessary to have. To be more precise, it is better than not having it. While they skip a lot of steps in later chapters, you do at least manage to figure it out aafter playing around with the numbers and equations for a bit. Without this solutions manual the class would be harder. So for that reason I am bumping it up to the 4 star rating.

So buy the book because it is better than not having it. However do not expect it to walk you through everything because sadly it does not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
This book is completely horrible - it starts out explaining solutions for the odd numbered problems very well which is great so when you are doing chapters 2-5, it works wonderfully. When you get to chapter 6, it's utter chaos. It's frustrating enough to have a teacher who doesn't bother to correct your homework, but even the solutions manual doesn't show complete work and very often pairs the wrong graphs with the correct solutions which is confusing when you are relying on at least the odd-numbered solutions to help you understand the material. It skips steps and doesn't always show the correct work - I'm not using the solutions manual to get answers (those are provided in the back of the book already) - so I'm very disappointed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best! there is
I was fortunate to have the co-author of this book as a professor at the University of Houston. The book is a wonderful combination of: 1) clear and concise presentation of theory; 2) examples and applications relevant to science, mathematics and business; 3) analysis, in fact most results are derived and there are problems which enable a motivated student to begin building his/her derivation and mathematical reasoning skills; 4) diagrams. The book is also comprehensive. It "constructs" calculus from the theory of limits, provides the foundation of calculus in the form of various theorems, including but not limited to the Mean Value Thoerem, the Intermediate Value Theorem, Rolle's theorem, L'Hospital's theorem, Riemann Integral, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Also provided are the resulting powerful derivative, integration and function analysis tools. The book includes calulus of one variable as well as many variables in the Vector Calculus section of the book. Finally, it ends with an introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations. It takes three semesters: Calculus I, II and III to get through this book at the University of Houston. So, although the price seems high, there is a tremendous amount here. I am now a graduate student in physics taking an Analysis course with the great author of this book (G. Etgen) this summer. This is not a course I need, so this gives you an idea of how stimulating Dr. Etgen's presentation of calculus is. You must master calculus before you can be competent in applied physics (or other science field), advanced finance, ... If you study each page of this book and work many of the problems in each section, you will be well on your way to being accomplished in a career in applied or theoretical mathematics. Also, the student solutions manual to the book is excellent and recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Word: splendid.
Great transaction.Speedy process. If I were grading this on a scale of 1-3, it would be a 10.

1-0 out of 5 stars It should be called Answers Manual
The text book is enough to have! this solution manual is very useless!! since the solution manual should have explicit solutions to every odd question! But this so called solution manual doesn't have more than what the text book provides on its back ! So don't waste your money on this "answers" manual. In addition, it has so many mistakes in it !!.The Textbook for this "ANSWERS MANUAL" is EXCELENT for applied math students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book, glad I used it
I used this book for Calculus I, II and III courses. I learnt almost everything I know about calculus from it. And I am an aerospace engineer so we used calculus for pretty much EVERYTHING. I feel this book gave me a very good foundation in calculus, it is easy to read and understand. Keep in mind calculus is not easy for a beginner, it is not something we are taught at a young age such as arithmetic and algebra and requires a fundamentally different way of thinking. Even with this book things will not be easy, but they will be as easy as they can be. I would recommend this book to anyone beginning calculus, and still keep it on my shelf 4 years down the line. Unfortunately I cannot say the same thing about the solutions manual that comes with the book, that is hard to follow, but since this review is about the text itself Im gonna give it a 5 star.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This is a very decent calculus book.

One of my favorite features is the complete lack of stock photos -- instead, they decided to fill the space with USEFUL information, and diagrams related to the topic being discussed (no baseball players and businessmen...).

The book has a fairly good balance of theory and applications, and does a good job at using elegant but INSTRUCTIVE proofs.

It is a gentler introduction that something like Apostol or Spivak -- less theory ... which depending on what you plan to use it for can be a good or bad thing. I personally used it before trying to tackle Apostol's book, and it made reading the latter much easier.

All in all, I'd recommend this book over most other calculus books geared towards this audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook.
This is an excellent textbook as a classroom text or for self-study. I
have read other reviews where the reviewer complains about too much theory. This is nonsense. If you only want formulas then take only that
from the book. If you want more it is there. This book is an excellent
precursor to analysis and differential equations. The authors don't baby
the reader but you better come well versed in precalculus. Please don't
try to study calculus if you can't do inequalities, logs, etc. and then
blame the author and your instructors for your failures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Complete, Just plain Great
Having used this book throughout my undergraduate education in calculus (Calc 1-3), I can attest to the effectiveness of this edition. What I truly love about this edition is the effort put forth to actually explain why, and not just give a "that's the way it is" analysis of concepts. After meeting other people exposed to calculus in high school where you're expected just to take concepts like the connection between the definite and indefinite integral at face value, it was amazing to actually come across a calc book that takes time to explain things logically, which is kind of the whole point.
Word to the wise, this isn't a calc for business or calc for life sciences version. This is calculus, pure, pulling no punches. I'm giving it four stars because I think there could have been better organization concerning the proofs for some of the ideas and concepts presented.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely dreadful for Calculus newbies!
If you dread taking calculus and aren't into math theory, I wouldn't recommend using this book. It'll only increase your headaches. The examples are sometimes too simple for the homework problems and will require an additional supplement. The chapters are horribly structured.A new chapter usually begins directly underneath exercises--a definite eye sore, given all the theorems shown. I, however, think the chapter on "Limits" is by far the best section. If the book implemented this method of teaching throughout the whole book, I'd give the book a better rating.

A college calculus book I can stand behind is "Calculus" by Smith and Minton. They work out several examples in simple terms to help you understand Calculus without all the frustration.I wish I would have discovered it earlier during my course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point in the study of calculus
I didn't first study calculus from this book but wish I had. This is a very good introduction to calculus, easy to read yet still rigorous. It starts with the basics of differentiation covering the standard collection of theorems and ends covering vector analysis (div grad and curl) as well as various forms of multivariate optimization such as the method of Lagrangian multipliers. Some of the drawings are bit on the crude side but they are very clear and easily understood. If you can get this book at a good price, do so. ...
