2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat informative, but juvenile
This book reminded me of the biographies on Roberto Clemente and Teddy Roosevelt that I used to pick up in elementary school, but with slightly more technical subject matter. There are some interesting stories aboutDelbruck's life and discoveries, but these are written in a juvenile mannerand the book does not live up to its title- very little discussion of theimpact of molecular biology on other scientific fields or society ingeneral is provided. The important experiments of Delbruck, Luria, andothers are also described poorly. There are much better books on theorigins of molecular biology. For some fun, hagiographic info on Delbruckthis might work - for anything more, it won't. ... We have no evidence at all on the subject. (S) Hence, it would be absurd, if it were supposed the same, to call it either spiritual or material; and noumenal monism could not lead us to infer noumenal Idealism or Realism, (t) It being impossible to know anything about the noumenon (and as we cannot even apply the law of Parcimony, which is only a regulative principle in discussing phenomena), the critical philosophy results in problematical pluralism. The principle of this passage will be found very well enunciated by Dr. Fischer, below, p. 178, as taken from the First Edition (Appendix G., p. 355). He shows how Kant had already there perceived that the permanent which helps to determine our internal changes must be external; and also that external experience has just as much authority, and dignity, and evidence, as internal. But, being still opposed, and perhaps vexed by continued assertions of idealism, he determined to show that internal experience was not only not superior, but even necessarily dependent upon external for its very possibility. The fact that this latter argument replaces the discussion of the First Edition just referred to, is, I conceive, an additional proof of the correctness of this view.V. THE INTUITION OF SELF NOT IMMEDIATE.§ 1. The most remarkable feature in Mr. Hansel's philosophy is undoubtedly the point which he (and indeed, on the question of liberty, M. Cousin also) has drawn to light from Des Cartes. The questions of substance, cause, and of liberty, Mr. Mansel settles upon much simpler, and at first sight more satisfactory gr... ... Read more

Product Description
Mandelbrot’s tree, Maxwell’s demon, Schrödinger’s cat, Newton’s clock, Einstein’s ghost – many scientific ideas and discoveries are connected with a famous name. Ernst Peter Fischer, who knows as no other how to convey the fascination of science in a clear and entertaining way, explains what these concepts are – through the back door, so to speak – and by doing so delivers a fascinating introduction to modern science.Science is the creation of humans, and some of them have such good scientific ideas that their names are attached to them. Maxwell’s demon is a devilish figure that tries to dissolve the basic laws of physics. Schrödinger’s cat came into this world in order to show us that we will not soon understand what possibilities Nature allows things.Being put in the role of the demon or in the cat’s situation helps us experience and comprehend close up what effects the laws of nature have and what needs to be known in order to understand them. And whoever lets him or herself in for this will get to know something wonderful, namely the fact that there are no complete or conclusive solutions, but only temporary, conditional ones. The demon, the cat, and many other eponymous ideas – Pascal’s bet, Planck’s principle, Einstein’s ghost – do not deliver final answers. Rather, these ideas offer room for joyful amazement, opening our eyes to the fact that science provides many opportunities for wonder. For this, we owe those scientists who have given birth to these ideas. And by learning about these ideas, we get to know more about the individuals who are connected with them. With his newest book, Ernst Peter Fischer, the “Renaissance man with passion” (Die Zeit) offers us his personal approach to science.Press “Ernst Peter Fischer explains everything one needs to know about science.” Die Zeit“Ernst Peter Fischer, the historian of science with the gift of clarity.” Frankfurter Allgemeine ZeitungAuthor Ernst Peter Fischer, born in 1947, studied mathematics and physics in Cologne and biology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He then received a professorial scholarship in the area of history of science. Today he is a history of science professor at the University of Cologne. He is the author of numerous books, receiving for his work many awards, including the Sartorius Prize of the Academy of Sciences, Göttingen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very refined reading
I bought this book in the seventies and read it for the first time in Spanish. It became an excellent consulting textbook that lead me on to the investigation of many of the classics in literature and the arts.It is a riddle to me why in the English translation they added, "a Marxist approach" to the title. It is too sad that the book in English is now out of print, and I would be happy to find it also in German original language. Thanks a lot, Amazon.com, for helping me find back to one of my dearest readings ever. ...
