Product Description
The four stories in this collection take readers into some of the smaller worlds that make up the larger whole. An odd and unenthusiastic door to door salesman becomes a bit too enmeshed in the neighborhood where he's working. The last request of a wealthy woman results in numerous broken laws and health violations. A young girl finds her own unique place in the cult to which she and her family belong. And two homeless boys learn how to make a will. Each story examines the horror and humor of its character's lives, and follows to see how far those elements go. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read: Choking, Aging. Hanging. Train!
This book is great...excellent $3 investment. The setting of each story plays as much of a role as the characters and plot, resulting in stories that coalesce and flow from beginning to end. There's some very fine writing going on here. Weible's prose captures some deeply moving moments and the stories are entertaining throughout. There are a few points where it seems like the author couldn't decide whether to be serious or satirical and ends up with something muddled between the two, as well as a few points that are a little maudlin, but overall this is a solid collection and an enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase!
It took me a while to put my finger on what, if anything, connected these four stories.A lot of short story collections stick to a theme, or may all be set in one specific region or state.Weible's stories seemed all over the map at first, but after reading them I realized that where he (I wasn't sure about the gender of the name, but I went to his website and he is definitely a he) shows consistency is in coming up with stories that skirt the border of unbelievable without actually crossing it and carry a strain of dark humor through them.

For example, Zoar, (possibly the strongest story in this collection) is about a young girl whose family slowly becomes involved with a cult and how she then begins manipulating the beliefs of the people around her for reasons of her own.The story takes place among people on the fringes of regular society.Viking Funeral (my personal favorite) is about a nouveau riche family deciding how to handle their mother's request in her will to have her remains placed in a boat and burned.A Reading of Wills is told from the point of view of a homeless child.Phone Man is about a door to door salesman trying to disengage from the world through his job.The people in these stories are all completely plausible, but the stories are told in such a way as to render their experiences slightly extraordinary.

The last one I mentioned, Phone Man, is the best example of the overall theme I found throughout the book. The main character has a banal, lousy job (he sells long distance service door to door in an impoverished urban neighborhood) that ends up going to a dangerous extreme. It's the main character's actions that gradually and believably push the ordinary to the brink of chaos. That's what this book does consistently and well: it follows the ordinary to the extreme.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories, would love to read more from Weible.
Weible's stories are hugely fun to read. One aspect of these stories that particularly appeals to me is the tendency for something to actually happen in each one. There's a climax. So many short stories go for a flat, slice-of-life, plot-less structure--these don't do that.First Born is both incredibly sad and incredibly funny. My Roommate the Spy is absolutely manic and original.Obedience School does what especially well-crafted satire is supposed to do by managing not to be obvious satire.Judgment Day is a story about couples living through the apocalypse that is touching, and noteworthy for the fact that it avoids all the usual clichés found in stories about either couples or apocalypses.

I can't find anything else by this author, but I hope to see more in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, quirky, unpredictable - highly recommend
I liked every one of these stories. They're all pretty different from each other. I read a lot of short stories and I liked these because there is NOTHING predictable about them. I had originally bought just one (My Roommate the Spy) but I came back and got the whole collection. Highly recommend.

Product Description
When Smith St. John loses his job and girlfriend after a slight cocaine overdose on the floor of his publishing company's marketing department, he finds himself scrounging in corners for any kind of writing job he can get. After doing freelance work writing celebrity biographies, he finds an untapped market in penning other people's suicide notes.Trading on the notion that suicide is indignity enough without showing everyone how you confused "there" and "their" in your final missive, Smith discovers a thriving market of ineloquent potential suicides.A local reporter finds Smith's online ad (keywords: suicide, gun sale, Morrissey, depression, and Sylvia Plath) and conducts an interview, bestowing Smith a minor celebrity of his own that leads to a tour of local morning news shows in America's heartland.Smith's spiraling addiction, some anti-suicide protesters, and the hokey poetry of another guest all combine to turn the morning shows into indecent affairs that propel Smith to the status of a hated man doing vile work despite the fact that, so far, all of his clients are stubbornly refusing to actually put their suicide notes to use. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun read
It wasn't until I was about halfway through this (and enjoying it, I should add) that I realized there just aren't that many books about 25 or 26 year old guys, at least not that I've read. The narrator, Smith St. John, starts the book with a trip to jail and not too much later, he loses his girlfriend.Thankfully, this isn't the kind of book where he spends the rest of it trying to win her back.A lot goes on here, but the gist is that this guy eventually finds himself out of a job and he starts writing suicide letters for people, freelance. At the same time, this is a really funny book. The subject matter is obviously kind of dark, but the narrator doesn't spend his time moping around some kind of inner wasteland or anything like that.I liked this a lot, I had fun reading it.
