He was a dedicated observational astronomer, and his "British Catalogue" of stars, finally published in 1725, well after his death, brought stellar astronomy to a new level. His star atlas, published four years after the catalogue but in development for over twenty years, was based on Flamsteed's new, more accurate observations, and that fact, coupled with its impressive size (it was the largest star atlas that had ever been published) immediately vaulted it into the select ranks of the great celestial atlases. One of Flamsteed's principal motives in publishing the atlas was to correct what Flamsteed felt were serious errors in Bayer's depiction of the constellation figures. Bayer had reversed many of the figures, showing them from the rear instead of the front, and these new positions contradicted the traditional star descriptions (i.e., Ptolemy's "star in the right shoulder" of Orion had become, in Bayer's rendering, the star in the left shoulder). Since most stars were still referred to by their Ptolemaic labels, Flamsteed objected to Bayer's revisions as introducing unnecessary confusion into stellar astronomy, and so all his figures follow the traditional descriptions exactly, as we can see in comparing the Orion figures in Flamsteed and Bayer The Flamsteed atlas was welcomed because of its unprecedented accuracy, but it did suffer from some deficiencies. It was, for one thing, almost too big to use, with its twenty-four-by-twenty inch plates. It also lacks the aesthetic quality of both the Bayer and Hevelius atlases. It is not known how or why he was commissioned to produce a revised edition of Flamsteed's star atlas, but it turned out to be a very successful enterprise. All of Flamsteed's twenty-six plates were re-engraved on a much smaller scale, so that they now measured only 23 by 18 cm. (One of Flamsteed's original plates, depicting Hydra, was a double-page folding plate, and in Fortin's editions it was divided in two, increasing the number of plates to twenty-seven). In the process, the engravers greatly improved the aesthetic appeal of Flamsteed's often awkward figures. The illustration shows a detail of the Orion/Taurus region. When one compares the Orion/Taurus region to the corresponding region in the original 1729 Flamsteed atlas , we can see that Fortin's plates were aesthetically a great improvement.

Tendo abandonado a escola por razões de saúde, Flamsteed estudou Astronomia por iniciativa própria e, posteriormente, prosseguiu os estudos na Universidade de Cambridge, entre 1670 e 1674. Em 1677 tornou-se membro da Royal Society que fora fundada em 1666. O rei Charles II criou, em 1675, o Observatório de Greenwich com o objectivo de encontrar uma solução astronómica para o problema das longitudes, tendo nomeado Flamsteed para ser o primeiro director com o título inerente de astrónomo real Do ponto de vist material, a vida de Flamsteed foi difícil. Com verbas insuficientes foi forçado a dar lições particulares para conseguir os recursos necessários à aquisição do equipamento de observação tendo somente em 1688, graças a uma pequena herança por parte do pai, os meios para construir o quadrante mural, instrumento destinado a medir a altura das estrelas na sua passagem pelo meridiano. Um episódio notável da sua vida deu-se a propósito de uma controvérsia com Newton e Halley. Tendo já acumulado uma quantidade impressioannte de observações não desejava publicá-las enquanto não estivessem completas e com o nível de exactidão pretendido. Todavia, Newton, através da Royal Society, forçou a publicação e, com o apoio financeiro do Príncipe George da Dinamarca, as observações foram editadas por Halley em 1712. Here's the long awaited part two: in 1703, Newton was appointed President of the Royal Society. He wanted to publish a second edition of the Principia , but needed more of Flamsteed's data. Rather that ask directly for it, he deviously appealed to the Queen 's husband, Prince George, known to be a very stupid man but nonetheless with a very enthusiastic interest in astronomy. He hoped to gain a commission to publish a star catalogue in the prince's name, which would of course require Flamsteed's detailed records. Flamsteed was furious and vowed revenge. The project was begun in 1705 and proved to be a disaster from the start. Newton first set-up an editorial committee, pointedly excluding Flamsteed. Then, to spite Flamsteed further, publishing rights were given to a very expensive publisher, excluding Flamsteed from the rights. Flamsteed kept stalling, claiming that he wasn't ready. Ordained a clergyman in 1675, Flamsteed in 1684 received the income of the living of Burstow, Surrey. His report to the Royal Society on the need for a new observatory resulted in the founding (1675) of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, of which he was the first director (and hence astronomer royal). He found that he himself had to supply all the instruments at Greenwich, apart from a few gifts; he was forced to take private pupils to augment his income. A small inheritance from his father, who died in 1688, provided the means to construct a mural arc, a wall-mounted instrument for measuring the altitudes of stars as they passed the meridian. The latter part of Flamsteed's life passed in controversy over the publication of his excellent stellar observations. He struggled to withhold them until completed, but they were urgently needed by Isaac Newton and Edmond Halley, among others. Newton, through the Royal Society, led the movement for their immediate publication. In 1704 Prince George of Denmark undertook the cost of publication, and, despite the prince's death in 1708 and Flamsteed's objections, the incomplete observations were edited by Halley, and 400 copies were printed in 1712. Flamsteed later managed to burn 300 of them. His own star catalog, Historia Coelestis Britannica (1725), listed more stars (3,000) and gave their positions much more accurately than did any other previous work. Some stars, such as 61 Cygni, are still known by their numbers in his system.

Extractions: The Reverend John Flamsteed (1646-1719) Born in Derbyshire in 1646, John Flamsteed showed an early talent for practical astronomy, and his work in this field became known among scholars. One of his papers, sent to the President of the Royal Academy, brought him to the attention of Sir Isaac Newton, then Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. As a result, Flamsteed went to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he took a degree in 1674. Another patron was Sir Jonas Moore who procured for him the newly-created office of Astronomer Royal. The building of the Observatory was brought about by the need for a satisfactory method of finding the longitude of ships at sea. A project had been promulgated in London by a Frenchman, Le Sieur de St Pierre, but Flamsteed pointed out that it could not be carried out because, "The places of the fixed stars" were not accurately enough known. The King, Charles II, is said to have reacted with some vehemence, ordering that they should be "anew observed, examined and corrected for the use of his seamen". So the Observatory was built at Greenwich. The King gave a grant of £500, bricks from Tilbury Fort and wood, iron and lead from a demolished gatehouse at the Tower, and promised "whatever else became necessary".
