Product Description
How does city life change the way we act? What accounts for the increasing prevalence of violence and anxiety in our world? In this new edition of his controversial 1969 bestseller, THE HUMAN ZOO, renowned zoologist Desmond Morris argues that many of the social instabilities we face are largely a product of the artificial, impersonal confines of our urban surroundings.Indeed, our behavior often startlingly resembles that of captive animals, and our "developed" and "urbane" environment seems not so much a concrete jungle as it does a human zoo.

Animals do not normally exhibit stress, random violence, and erratic behavior—until they are confined.Similarly, the human propensity toward antisocial and sociopathic behavior is intensified in today’s cities.Morris argues that we are biologically still tribal and ill-equipped to thrive in the impersonal urban sprawl. As important and meaningful today as it was a quarter-century ago, THE HUMAN ZOO sounds an urgent warning and provides startling insight into our increasingly complex lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A '60's Viewpoint Still Timely
The Naked Ape: A Zoologist's Study of the Human Animal

A highly accessable treatise on cultural anthropology. As timely in the '60's, when I first read it, as it is today. Actually, it was prophetic.

2-0 out of 5 stars good ambitions
his idea was great for the book, alot of the stuff he says was well researched and correct, however, alot , especially when it gets to psychology , was outdated, and incorrect, and the book has alot of contradictions, once again, especially with the psychology parts, and his imprinting and mal-imprinting section contradicts things he says later on in the book, if you want to be better informed, skip this and go straight to actual psychology books , this is more or less a book for people who want to pretend to be intellectual, and just take anyones word on anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Zoologist examining human "normal" behaviour
We are so embedded in our modern cities and modern way of life (digital communications, home deliveries, grocery stores...) that almost nobody stops to think if we behave as "normal" homo sapiens. Well, here is Dr. Morris telling us we don't. Yeah, every now and then we hear about someone saying we are living in sin, the end of the world is near, anarchy rules and stuff like that, this book has nothing to do with that (and I'm not criticizing any ideology, just demarcating an important diference). This book contains serious opinions of a highly educated scholar whose specialty has trained him to look at details we normally don't pay attention to, and Dr. Morris makes interesting correlations between behaviour manifested in animals (specially apes) in captivity and with humans in big cities. It is always refreshing to read original opinions based on serious studies by intelligent individuals with different mental models, highly recommended reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars How many people go to the zoo everyday?
why we do what we do, why we feel the way we feel are the topics of many good books today but this excellent book takes the questions at hand and approaches them from a unique perspective.Edmund Morris, a zoologist, uses his years of study with animals in an unnatural environment, the zoo and compares their actions to those of their ancestors, humans who are living in an unnatural environment as well. This book is extremely relative to the times, and gives wonderful insights as to why we live in a world with escalating tensions among countries, races etc..If the reader allows her/his mind to be as creative as the author who wrote this book the possibilities to make improvements in ones life and in the world at large are endless.(The author sites Jane jacobs and her excellent work The death and life of Great American Cities which I would also highly recommend) ... Product Description
A moving, vividly rendered novel from the late author of The Basketball Diaries.

When poet, musician, and diarist Jim Carroll died in September 2009, he was putting the finishing touches on a potent work of fiction. The Petting Zoo tells the story of Billy Wolfram, an enigmatic thirty- eight-year-old artist who has become a hot star in the late-1980s New York art scene. As the novel opens, Billy, after viewing a show of Velázquez paintings, is so humbled and awed by their spiritual power that he suffers an emotional breakdown and withdraws to his Chelsea loft. In seclusion, Billy searches for the divine spark in his own work and life. Carroll's novel moves back and forth in time to present emblematic moments from Billy's life (his Irish Catholic upbringing, his teenage escapades, his evolution as an artist and meteoric rise to fame) and sharply etched portraits of the characters who mattered most to him, including his childhood friend Denny MacAbee, now a famous rock musician; his mentor, the unforgettable art dealer Max Bernbaum; and one extraordinary black bird. Marked by Carroll's sharp wit, hallucinatory imagery, and street-smart style, The Petting Zoo is a frank, haunting examination of one artist's personal and professional struggles. ... Read more

Daddy's taking us to the
zoo tomorrow,
zoo tomorrow, zoo tomorrow.
Daddy's taking us to the
zoo tomorrow.
We can stay all day.

Now you can go along too, as Tom Paxton's classic song comes to life in this boisterous picture book. Rhythmic verse leads you through a wild kingdom where animals burst from every page. Monkeys are scritch, scritch, scratchin', and kangaroos are hop, hop, hoppin', making every moment an adventure.

Karen Lee Schmidt's lively, irresistible illustrations show the animals up to all sorts of mischief. And with the easily played melodies included, this musical menagerie is every bit as fun as a trip to the zoo. Youngsters will want to "stay all day" -- and come back again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Reading, Great For Singing!
I lov this book and use it every year at story hours for kids ages 2 and up and we have a great time singing and acting out the book. I even sing it with the one year olds--we just act out the animals as we sing the song!

My favorite memories of this book/song are of my then 2 year old daughter singing "Zoo,zoo, zoo!" in the back of the car whenever she wanted us to sing this together!

If you don't know the tune for this, you can find it on the Peter,Paul and Mary album "Peter Paul and Mommy". In fact, if you look it up here at Amazon you can hear a clip of the song. Sadly, the Tom Paxton recording is out of print.
And don't worry about your voice quality--kids just love it when you sing with them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendations
My two year old loves this book. I was hoping to find some other books for my daughter by checking reviews from other readers, but no one had any- so I thought I would recommend Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (another sing songy favorite that we have memorized) and Eric Carle's book about Papa getting the Moon (exact title escapes me). The Carle book is a necessity if your child likes the moon like ours does.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 Year Old Loves This
My 4 year old read this book at her daycare and came home asking for it. It is a great book because it is also a song, very appealing to the 4 year old group and makes it easier for her to remember when she is "reading" the book.
The illustraions are very clever and very cute. A book that parents and children alike can read many times without getting tired.

5-0 out of 5 stars No words, but endelessly entertaining!
I love Alison Jay's illustrations, which is why I purchased this book - one thing I didn't realize until I got it was that there are no words, which was a surprise, but it is actually so much better for it.The pictures have so many things to look at and you can create your own story lines as you go if you want, or just guess what all the people and animals are doing. My daugther is almost two and has recently fallen in love with this book - she runs to it when she gets up in the morning and spends a ton of time looking at the pictures and flipping the pages to find the same characters on different pages.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book is a real treasure in the sea of children's books. My wife and I read a lot to our son and he has his own little library now. Welcome to the Zoo has a been a favorite for a long time (he is 3 1/2). Although there are no words there has been more thought and love put into the stories within these pages than most any other book for my son I've read.

Each page shows how multiple families and pets move through this richly illustrated story. As a reader you can follow all the events that occur to one character from page to page or try to see everything (hard to do!) on each. My son enjoys it now because he cannot read yet but he can follow the events that happen to the people and animals. And because there is no words we are free to make up our own stories for each character.

This is a great book and I cannot express enough how entertaining it is for my son and I. I hope others enjoy it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book
This is a must have book!It is beautifully illustrated and fun for all.It is wonderfully simple, yet creative. You can spend a few minutes following one animal through this book or 20 minutes laughing at all sorts of scenarios.Just lovely! It's my new favorite gift book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful and naturally interactive - the illustrations ARE the story
There's no words in this book. I mention this first up because it took me a while to notice. Welcome to the Zoo is such a delight with so much detail on each jam-packed hilarious page that I was so busy discussing with my niece everything that is going on on each page, following each person & animal through the book, that we didn't even think to look for a story till much later on. It is a lot of fun and very sweet & funny. It has a section at the back with "Can you find...:" but you don't really need it as the book so naturally lends itself to interaction without extra prompting. And Alison Jay's illustrations are, as ever, a complete delight. ... Read more

Product Description

The captivating story of how a band of scientists has redrawn the genetic and behavioral lines that separate humans from our nearest cousins

In the fall of 2005, a band of researchers cracked the code of the chimpanzee genome and provided a startling new window into the differences between humans and our closest primate cousins. For the past several years, acclaimed Science reporter Jon Cohen has been following the DNA hunt, as well as eye-opening new studies in ape communication, human evolution, disease, diet, and more.

In Almost Chimpanzee, Cohen invites us on a captivating scientific journey, taking us behind the scenes in cutting-edge genetics labs, rain forests in Uganda, sanctuaries in Iowa, experimental enclaves in Japan, even the Detroit Zoo. Along the way, he ferries fresh chimp sperm for a time-sensitive analysis, gets greeted by pant-hoots and chimp feces, and investigates an audacious attempt to breed a humanzee. Cohen offers a fresh and often frankly humorous insider's tour of the latest research, which promises to lead to everything from insights about the unique ways our bodies work to shedding light on stubborn human-only problems, ranging from infertility and asthma to speech disorders.

And in the end, Cohen explains why it's time to move on from Jane Goodall's plea that we focus on how the two species are alike and turns to examining why our differences matter in vital ways—for understanding humans and for increasing the chances to save the endangered chimpanzee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Profound.
Almost Chimpanzee:Search for What Makes Us Human, In Rainforests, Labs, Sanctuaries, and Zoos by Jon Cohen is perhaps, the most significant book I've read so far in 2010.Almost everyone has heard of Jane Goodall and the work she has done for more than 40 years in the Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. It is largely through Goodall's work that the world has learned of the many similarities between chimp behavior and that of humans.Jon Cohen's Almost Chimpanzee is a fresh examination of some of the differences between humans and chimps rather than the similarities.

The genetic differences between human and chimp DNA is estimated to be about 1%.But even that minute difference has meant a huge separation between the fates of the two species.Correctly pointed out, man will determine the fate of the chimp and not the other way around.

Cohen has used research from virtually every field of primate research. He has included work done in laboratories and in field studies, and included efforts to teach apes and chimpanzees language. He also includes work that looks at the differences in the human body and that of the chimp. Why are we bipedal, the only primate to be so, and why do male chimps have larger testicles than their human counterparts?

Almost Chimpanzee doesn't attack the topic by comparing chimps to humans but instead approaches the subject from the other point of view....what makes us Almost Chimpanzees.

Profoundly interesting!I highly recommend.

Peace always.

This wonderful book is a synthesis of humans, animals, science and history.
Beautifully written, it makes clear the things that make us like the chimpanzees but also the differences that make us humans.Based on extensive research, Cohen has taken Jane Goodall's study of chimps and added another dimension. ... Read more

Product Description
Fans of Gerald Durrell’s timeless classic My Family and Other Animals will love this hilarious tale, which finds him as an adult still charmed by his beloved animals. A Zoo in My Luggage begins with an account of Durrell’s third trip to the British Cameroons in West Africa, during which he and his wife capture animals to start their own zoo. Returning to England with a few additions to their family—Cholmondeley the chimpanzee, Bug-eye the bush baby, and others—they have nowhere to put them as they haven’t yet secured a place for their zoo. Durrell’s account of how he manages his menagerie in all sorts of places throughout England while finding a permanent home for the animals provides as much adventure as capturing them. For animal lovers of all ages, A Zoo in My Luggage is the romping true story of the boy who grew up to make a Noah’s Ark of his own. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very funny, not PC...
We love the Corfu books by Gerald Durrel and hoped this was more of the same.It is similar but not quite the same.Still, some very funny moments. He is rather old fashioned with his descriptions of local residents.... that wouldn't fly today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Africa and Animals

Gerald Durrell has written quite a few books and this is one of the funniest. He travels to Africa to find rare and exotic animals and has laugh out loud funny adventures. He also has a serious message about preserving animals and their natural habitat.

This would be a good book for middle school type readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any book by Gerald Durrell
I could not recommend any book more wholeheartedly than I do "A Zoo in my Luggage", along with all books by Gerald Durrell.Young and old will find the information of great interest, the writing style hilarious and entertaining, and the geographic descriptions factual and vivid with local color.I have read all of his books when I was a young mother living in West Africa, and I have ordered these books now for my grandchildren to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Any normal person...would have got the zoo first and the animals next."
Naturalist/writer Gerald Durrell, with a writer's eye for unusual detail, a great sense of humor and absurdity, and an unquenchable enthusiasm for finding unique animals, recounts his third animal-collecting trip to the Cameroons in this classic 1960 memoir, recently reprinted.Supplying other people's zoos for many years, Durrell, on this trip, intends to collect specimens for his own zoo, one which will be open to the public and which will become a "self-supporting laboratory" with a captive breeding program to prevent the extinction of these species.

Arriving on the west coast of Cameroon, Durrell uses pidgin to converse with the Africans and refers to all animals as "beef," but he soon acquires many rare animals from the local population.A frightening canoe ride through hippo-infested waters, an attempt to capture a fifteen-foot python, a search for the blue-scalped, bald-headed Picanthartes bird, and the experience of smoking out a hollow tree keep Durrell and his staff energized and excited before they head to the highlands. There, Durrell stays with the charming Fon of Bafut, a elderly king with many wives, and he and Durrell enjoy many long evenings of talk, dance, and whisky.Soon the Fon's compound fills up with hundreds more captive reptiles, birds, and animals, including a half-grown baboon, a five-year-old chimp, and a baby chimp, all of which provide innumerable, often hilarious adventures.

Durrell provides details about the care and feeding of these animals, and he and his staff prove to be very "hands-on" caretakers, often having animals creep into their beds. The logistics of building cages and, eventually, packing them for the trip home, reveal the level of detail necessary to keep these animals healthy and calm so they can survive the trip to England.Upon his return, Durrell then begins the daunting task of trying to find a place to house these rare specimens, a task he neglected ahead of time.

A lively writer with a commitment to conservation and a tremendous sense of fun, Durrell gives the flavor of the whole trip, not just the academic details, providing realism at the same time that he reveals irrepressible humor, much of it directed at himself. His sensitivity to his surroundings, which he conveys through vibrant descriptions, makes the countryside come alive, while his anecdotes about the animals and the people he meets show his interest in expanding his knowledge while fully participating in events around him.Though there is no epilogue to bring the reader up to date on the success of Durrell's zoo or its captive breeding program, this information is readily available at: http://www.durrellwildlife.org/index.cfm?a=11 Mary Whipple

5-0 out of 5 stars inexplicably charming and quirky
Gerald Durrell's books have touched the hearts of naturalists for decades and I admit that I have only become a fan of his in the recent years. I was introduced to his books through my local used bookstore, where I was looking for copies of James Herriot's books that were not offered at my local bookstore, and decided to pick up a few and try them out.

His stories have a incorporated a vivid energy and hilarity into his passionate memoirs of unique nature experiences that will entertain any nature-lover. While some of his scientific practices may now be considered obsolete, we are given a rare glimpse into the love and respect for all things living that has been a core aspect of any naturalist throughout the ages.

I have since bought as many of Durrell's books that I have been able to find, and treasure each and every one of them. ... Read more

This ingenious book uses the postures and movements of zoo animals to teach yoga movements to children. The first part of the book covers theoretical and practical information for parents and teachers working with yoga. Part two takes readers to every part of the zoo, from the insect and reptile houses to the ape cage and the oceanarium. Here youngsters come face to face with a tiger, look in the eyes of a giraffe, do the monkey dance, and walk as gracefully as a flamingo. Part three introduces the rules of the yoga lifestyle through a number of animal fables. Part four contains background information about the animals described in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A natural and innovative application of the Yoga practices
Yoga is too often depicted as something for crazed new age adults who wear necklaces with healing crystals hanging from their neck. "The Yoga Zoo Adventure: Animal Poses and Games for Little Kids" is a guide explaining how Yoga can be taught to children and give them much benefit and education in the process. The practices of yoga can inspire creativity, imagination on top of the much more obvious physical benefits of exercise to help kids get and stay fit. "The Yoga Zoo Adventure" is a natural and innovative application of the Yoga practices, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy language for children!
Reviewed by Cayden (age 4) and Max (age 2) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (9/08)

"The Yoga Zoo Adventure" is filled with yoga poses and fun games for young children. The book begins by giving a brief history of yoga and then goes on to explain why yoga is beneficial to young children."In essence, yoga is concerned with stilling your thought, which begins with simple forms of self-discipline and self-control." (p.3) Each one of the 106 activities in the book has easy-to-follow, detailed instructions.Following the activities there is a section on animal fables and another section that gives facts about the animals in the book.

After we went through the entire book here is what my children had to say:

Cayden: "I liked acting like all different kinds of animals! My favorite was when we were pretending to be giraffes looking for leaves way up high in the trees!I liked the wheelbarrow and zookeeper game too!It was fun when you (mom) did the animal poses and games too!I liked the stories and when we read the things about the animals that we were being."

Max:"Fun!Liked frog!Hop, hop!Snake and tiger too!"

Parent's comments:

My children and I really enjoyed this book!Even though on the cover it says it is for ages 3-7, Max, at 2, had a lot of fun with the poses and games as well. His coordination just isn't there for some of the activities but he still had a great time trying!I also loved the fables and facts at the end of the book; not only were my children exercising but they were learning as well! All of the activities were appealing to my children and "The Yoga Zoo Adventure" by Helen Purperhart will definitely be a book that we will use over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
The Yoga Zoo Adventure is a delightful book for children and parents alike. What a wonderful way to work both bonding time and exercise into a family's day. In today's society, is seems more and more difficult to find time and ways to really include vitally important family time in our daily lives. Through The Yoga Zoo Adventure, this can easily be done, as well as aiming for a more healthy lifestyle that is fun.

In The Yoga Zoo Adventure, your child will travel through a virtual zoo of their minds. Visiting such places as the Ape Cages, Desert Animal Compound, Reptile Building, Insect House, Predator Pavilions and the Aquarium just to name a few. Each section has easy to follow instructions for a yoga move that mimics the real action of an animal. An example of this is as follows:

Prowling like a shark:

~~ Lie on your tummy.
~~ Bend your legs up and point your toes toward the ceiling to make your "tale".
~~ Bring both arms behind you and entwine your fingers together.
~~ Slide your arms up to the middle of your back to make your "fins".
~~ Lift your head and swim like a shark prowling for food in the ocean by moving your tail back and forth and your fins up and down.
*taken from page 98 of The Yoga Zoo Adventure

Also included are fun bits of information on each animal, delightful games and songs and a great ending, complete with several pages discussing The Importance of Zoos and the animals that are included within the book. The Yoga Zoo Adventure is a great book for several reasons - it's fun, educational, promotes a healthy body and is a great tool to bring children and parents together. I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old and we had a ton of fun with this book. It states, on the cover, that the age range is 3 - 7, however I truly feel that The Yoga Zoo Adventure goes well beyond that age bracket.

Excellent and highly recommended!

The Yoga Zoo Adventure by Helen Purperhart

I enjoyed this book. As I said before, I am not a yoga person but this book is a blast to do with children. Anyone that has kids at home or work with children like I do will love this book.Thumping like a gorilla or stomping like an elephant gets the kids imagination going, the heart pumping, and the giggles abound. We have done the butterfly change so many times I cant count and it works great after reading "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource, Wrong Title
While this book is a great resource for helping students evaluate and analyze text, I did not get exactly what I was looking for because the title listed on Amazon does not match the book. The title on Amazon says A to Zoo: (Children's and Young Adult Literature Reference), 7th Edition, which is the book I wanted. However, the actual book available is the "Supplement to the 7th Edition".So, I had to go elsewhere to find the 7th edition.

great book and it was in the condition we were expecting, and got it quickly!

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
I purchased this book for my five year old grandson. We gave it to him with tracing paper, colored pencils, and an art pad. He loved it (as did his seven year old sister.) I wish I had known about this book before I retired from teaching. It would have been in my classroom. I will be purchasing another book for my younger grandchild when he's older.
We play the game "I'm thinking of an animal " and the players ask "yes/no" questions.
This is a great coffee table book for adults as well as children.

Recommended by a design blogger, my nephew really loved the book. Even his dad considered it "cool".

Joelle Jolivet's illustrations are wonderfully graphic and bold, like woodcuts. My daughters, ages 2 and 4, love to sit down on the floor and pore over this giant book. Its scale and beauty makes this a great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's Favorite
This is the first book that my daughter has shown a preference for. At about 9 months old, she started pulling this book off the shelf and plopping into my lap to read it. It is interactive and sturdy and my daughter pulls it off the shelf again and again. She especially likes the black bear with fuzzy skin and the peacock fold out page.

5-0 out of 5 stars _Z Is for Zoo_ Is Full of Infant Fun!
I bought _Z Is for Zoo_ for my nine-month-old son, thinking he would get a kick out of the pictures. Not only does he enjoy having it read to him, he prefers it to his other books and gets very excited when I pull it out of the stack. The photographs of the animals are big, bright, and clear, and the twenty-two pages hold an diverse selection of exotic animals, my son's favorites being the black bear, the giraffe, and the elephant. The text is written with short sentences in end-rhyme verse, which helps children pick up on the rhythm of language, and I like the variety of vocabulary, such as "Leopard has spots and whiskers that quiver." The highlight of this children's book is the interactive pages, such as the chameleons' moving eyes, the fuzzy fur on the black bear and the orangutan (for baby's tactile enjoyment), and the foldout pictures of the peacock, giraffe, and elephant, which enages baby's spatial skills (page turning and folding out in multiple directions) and supports symbol recognition, as there is a small green circle at the corner of these pages that tells in which direction to open the fold. The elephant photo opens up to four times the size of a page, which makes quite an impression. Just as important for children, this book is solidly built with thick pages and robust, spongy covers, but my son has still managed to bend the front cover, leaving a crease, and chew the corners. This only serves to lend character to a book that is already abundant with charm. Much like the other books in the Priddy Books Touch and Feel series, I recommend _Z Is for Zoo_ for anyone with a child in the infant-to-preschool age group. I further recommend purchasing a new copy of these books, as the used ones, even those described as "very good," can be well-loved and have subsequent damage that the seller might overlook, which I discovered to my dismay. ... ALL OF THE ANIMALS DOWN AT THE ZOO
ARE SNUFFLING AND SNORTING AND SNEEZING ACHOO.

Why are the hyenas crying boo-hoo? And what gave the rhino a sickly green hue? It starts when Felicity Floo wipes her red, runny nose and transfers the goo. . . . Kids will be happily grossed out to follow the icky trail as she pets one hapless, bleary-eyed creature after another. With whimsical, stylized illustrations showing Felicity’s handprints on every spread, this cautionary tale will have readers roaring out loud — and racing off to wash their hands! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Preschoolers
This should be required reading in every preschool class! The illustrations are charming, and invite lots of poring over and are also big enough for group enjoyment. The rhyming is perfect - there's not a forced one in the bunch. It reads really smoothly ( although I keep messing up on the blue footed boobie and the jarubi!) and serves as a great introduction to the importance of hand washing and tissue use.The expressions on the animals faces are priceless when they fall victim to Felicity's gooey hands! It's the perfect length for 2 to 3 year olds.A sure winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old's new favorite book!
This is one of the best books I've seen for kids - my three year now demands that I read it, and then mommy reads it. This is my first Amazon review - my life is simply too busy right now! - but I felt inspired to highly recommend this book. In short, it is funny, creative, educational, fun for parents too (I don't mind reading it again and again because I like the book), and really well-illustrated. My wife is more discerning than I am and she really was impressed with the book as well. As an aside, I got to meet the author for the first time at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston during a book reading/signing and she seemed very cool so there you go...!

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 star review for Felicity Floo
Very appropriate, funny, and cute.Clever rhymes and just the right length.Dr. Seuss is a legend, but some of his books are too long for my little guy's attention span.I bought multiple copies of this book for gifts. Can't wait to see the next offering from E.S. Redmond. Great stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book with beautiful illustrations and a great message
I bought a copy of this book for my son's kindergarten class. It is the perfect story for kids that age. The pictures are beautiful and keep the kids engaged, and the message about germs is a great one. It really gives the kids a visual understanding of how germs are passed, but it is cute and entertaining too! I was so happy with it, I donated another copy to the school library. The librarian looked it over and loved it too. With cold and flu spreading like water in classrooms, this is a fun book that every kindergarten and Pre-K class should have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from www.firrkids.com
This is certainly an appropriate choice considering the massive outbreak of the H1N1 influenza virus currently sweeping the nation. Judging by little Felicity's reddened nose and glazed eyes, maybe she should have opted for the vaccine injection.

Just looking at the illustrations of Felicity gives me the urge to scrub my hands with antibacterial soap ... or bleach. Her hair hangs limp and greasy, her eyes are rimmed with deep shadows and her scarf drags listlessly behind her. Worst of all, her hands are smeared with .... (euphemistically) green nose goo. She looks rough all right, but manages to summon the energy to visit every pen in the zoo.

As Felicity winds her way through the zoo, slimy green hand prints appear on each animal, marking her path. The llamas have been tagged, as well as the ostriches, giraffe and red kangaroo. Not one animal seems to be safe from the germs that Felicity Floo is spreading. She hugs the elephants, pats the panda and even climb up to manhandle the mountain goats.

The Zookeeper can't figure out what is plaguing his animals. After Felicity's visit, they are sluggish and sleepy, with a strange green hue. Usually the fences are in place to protect the visitors from the ferocious animals. This zoo needs more gates to keep the poor animals healthy and safe from Felicity's goo!

This is a pretty clever and humorous way to spread the message of the importance of using tissues and practicing proper hand washing.Redmond did a great job with the illustrations - the animals look bedraggled and downright miserable following Felicity's visit. Even my five year old was grossed out by Felicity's appearance and appalled she would spread her sickness to the poor animals! We particularly enjoyed the rhyming text and hunting down the green handprints on each page. Felicity really gets around, so look closely. ... Read more

Product Description

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the real national zoo!

As Aristotle said, "Man is a political animal." Talk radio sensation and New York Times best-selling author Michael Savage is afraid that the ancient philosopher was all too right, and in ways he never could have imagined. In Savage's funniest, most biting book yet, the nation's fiercest independent thinker invites you to take a riotous tour through The Political Zoo-an outrageous look at today's most prominent politicos and pundits as the reptiles, rats, and birds of prey they most resemble.

Animal by animal and cage by cage, Savage brandishes his irreverent wit to keep these beasts in check. Serving as resident biologist and zookeeper, Dr. Savage asks that you watch your step when approaching the widemouth copperhead Ted Turner (also known as Mouthus desouthus), do not feed the ego of stuffed turkey Alec Baldwin (Notalentus anti-americanus), and please keep your children with you at all times around wolf boy Bill Clinton (Fondlem undgropeum).

"The world of politics is filled with uncivilized, snarling, rapacious beasts that, like untrained mutts, raise their legs and urinate on everything we hold dear," says Savage. And this sensational book is your guide for navigating the jungle of today's animal-political kingdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth for our times
Dr. Savage once again tells it like it is, but adds a touch of humor by comparing some of our worst celebs and politicians to types of animals.

1-0 out of 5 stars childish, slanted
This book is something a sixth grader with a buddy who can barely draw would put together and think he was being funny. Michael Savage ( true last name Weiner) pretends to put a Latin scientific name to various people he attacks, names that are related to assorted animals. While his mocking is based on the various public crap each notable person he targets for ridicule, the overall effect is not humor at the absurdity of these folks but Mikey acting superior to them all.

As it is with other Michael " Savage" books, or for that matter ANY book by the assorted yappers like Hannity, Coulter, Medved, Beck, you name it, the best attitude is to take whatever he writes with a salt lick handy. They all have an agenda, a role to play and pander to so they call, Savage included, can get the money from the suckers who buy into their "expertise".

If you want humor George Carlin. Lewis Black or Robin Williams are better. Michael Savage/Weiner isn't as funny as he thinks he is. This wasn't funny it was just some childish personal attacks using bad mockery. Molly Ivins he isn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book lots of details you will not find in the lame stream news
I received this book as a gift and enjoyed it. I was shocked how corrrrrupt our government reps really are. There are a lot of facts that Michael presents that you can verify. I cant believe what Barbara Boxer gets away with! He is not a one sided attack either he goes into flaws with GW Bush too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an original idea
Google this title:
"Mr. Punch's Animal Land"
(it's available and downloadable at Open Library)

It is a book by E. T. Reed, a British author, published in 1898.

Is it possible Savage found this and used it as a template?

1-0 out of 5 stars American fascist
Savage has rightly been banned from entering Britain because of his hate-filled diatribes against everybody not exactly like him.
In reply, he has now called on all Americans to boycott all British goods - so he has proved that he is no friend of Britain.
With Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, he hates democracy: they are in truth modern fascists. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
I was really excited about getting my hands on this book but ended up sorely disappointed. I was hoping for more information about the zoos. This, instead, is just an opinionated tour guidethat's very brief and now outdated. I don't think a few words on the 'top' exhibits really tells me much more than that the authors can compile a list.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Zoopendous Guide for your next Zoocation
Where was this book when I was a kid? Now that I am a parent though, I am just as thankful for it. This book reviews zoos big and small, far and wide, and provides pretty much every relevant piece of information that a zoo-goer could want in preparation for their visit. The majority of the book is broken down into individual reviews of the more noteworthy zoos in each region. Each review includes important information like the zoo website, hours of operation, admission, etc. and then focuses on the "featured exhibits", "for the kids", "edutainment", and "don't miss". At the end of the book are a couple of excellent appendices "The Top 10 US Zoo Exhibits in 20 Categories" and "Each Author's Picks for the Top 25 US Zoo Exhibits". So for example if you or your family loves looking at tigers and other Asian animals you will see that the Bronx Zoo and the Columbus Zoo are the top ranked in this category. Likewise if your local zoo does not feature a particular animal, in my case there are no hippos at the Bronx Zoo, then be sure to check out the Miami Metrozoo, San Diego Zoo, or Denver Zoo (which is what we did) on your next Zoocation. The authors have a great website associated with the book [...]and to top it off you can communicate with them directly via email and expect a fast response. Well organized and full of useful information - a must have for all zoo fans out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Travel Book!!!
What a terrific book!!!

"America's Best Zoos" is an amazingly detailed book that contains a wealth of information on the 60 best zoos in the United States. There are pages of data concerning zoo hours, admission fees, directions, featured exhibits, animals in the collections and upcoming attractions. Each of the 60 zoos has been given several pages in this new book, and an additional 37 zoos are mentioned in brief paragraphs as well. Anyone travelling across the nation will have a handy guide to family attractions that should appeal to any adult or child.

At the back of the book are 20 categories that provide top ten lists for zoos in terms of african animals in the collection, asian animals, bears, primates, birds, marine mammals, etc. If an avid zoo fan has an interest in a particular species of animal, there are additional listings of where the best locations are for such creatures. The icing on the cake for this superb book is the inclusion of a list of the 25 best U.S. zoo exhibits from each of the authors. Considering that there are around 220 accredited zoos in the United States, the lists are truly detailed and provide information on "the best of the best" in terms of zoological exhibit design. Any individual who is even remotely interested in zoos should definitely own this book!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Depressingly Outdated
Exotic animals on display is a form of entertainment that is as modern as the freak show. This book provides some information on some of the worst zoos in the country but makes them sound like acceptable family entertainment.Very misleading and outdated - don't waste your money!Go support a true animal-loving place like Dame Daphne Sheldrick's elephant orphanage in Kenya.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Zoo Lovers
Allen and Jon have put together a very comprehensive and detailed guide to the best zoos in America.I was very impressed with the detail devoted to each park profiled and found their reviews to be very fair and unbiased. They highlight the best exhibits in each zoo and provide other information regarding the other exhibits in the zoo.I especially enjoyed their last highlight for each zoo where they describe future plans for new exhibits.

I was an existing zoo and aquarium fan and often visited any animal park in each city I visited. This book brought to my attention many zoos which I either did not know existed or did not know were such fine zoos.I have already planned many trips this year to visit multiple zoos highlighted in the book.

Any person that enjoys and appreciates the care and conservation of wild animals will find this to be an enjoyable guide to the many excellent and often, unappreciated, zoos in this country. ... Read more

My 2 year old loves this book.It is one of her favorites (The Zoo is her favorite place to visit).

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Zoo by Gail Gibbons
In this book, Gibbons includes all important facts about the zoo presenting the information clearly and directly. The organization of the text is sequential from early morning at the zoo until nightfall. The purpose of the book is portrayed through the text and illustrations. The bright, colorful illustrations compliment the text and are clearly labeled using appropriate vocabulary for the intended age level. The book is very appropriate for young readers and would be a valuable resource for learning about the zoo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great behind-the-scenes look at the zoo
For all the children who go to the zoo and enjoy looking at the animals, Gail Gibbons presents a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at all the work that makes it possible. From the zookeepers arriving in the early morning to feed the animals and clean their cages and the vendors preparing for the zoo's visitors, to the security guard locking the main gate and patroling the empty walkways, the book does a nice job of giving children a more in-depth view of the zoo. Veterinarians help sick animals and monitor the birth of baby animals. Construction workers build a new exhibit. Zoo keepers prepare the special foods that the animals eat.

Both my boys were able to easily relate things they'd seen at our zoo to the book. Their next visit, too, was filled with applying what they'd seen in the book to our zoo.

Gibbons' books are always excellent. Zoo brings alive a favorite place to visit in a very unique way. ... Read more

Rajiv Joseph is one of today’s most acclaimed young playwrights. The winner of numerous awards, including an NEA Award for Best Play and a Whiting Writers Award, he is an artist to watch. This volume gathers together for the first time his three major works to date.

Included herein are his latest play, Gruesome Playground Injuries, which charts the intersection of two lives using scars, wounds, and calamity as the mile markers to explore why people hurt themselves to gain another’s love and the cumulative effect of such damage; Animals Out of Paper, a subtle, elegant, yet bracing examination of the artistic impulse and those in its thrall, which follows a world-famous origamist as she becomes the unwitting mentor to a troubled young prodigy, even as she must deal with her own loss of inspiration; and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, a darkly comedic drama that looks on as the lives of two American soldiers, an Iraqi translator, and a tiger intersect on the streets of Baghdad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next Stu Smith book
My kids love this book. The concept of everyone in the school seeming to have turned into an animal after a trip to the zoo is wonderful, and the lyrical nature of the text makes it even more fun.The illustrations are a big hit, too.My kids had the opportunity to meet Stu Smith and have portions of this book read by him, which was a real treat. Then he read the first part of his next book (due out in 2010) about a field trip to the museum and left us all hanging. We can't wait to find out how it ends!
