5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Absolutely fantastic.I found it at Barnes and Noble on the bargain rack for 5.98 and have since bought three copies.I'd say that about 80%+ of these readings are right on the mark and it includes information not only about individuals' Sun and Moon locations but also Venus and Mars, which allows you to look at both yourself and your compatibility with other people. My sister is now in love with it and I'm planning a trip to Barnes and Noble again to pick up the remaining few copies.Only downside is that the tables for Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars only go up to the year 2000.Hands down worth it, though, if you were born before then!

5-0 out of 5 stars This one has the moon signs!
I borrowed this book from a friend and found it to be the best astrology book where the average person can actually chart your sun, moon, venus and mars.Couldn't find a comparable one at the bookstore, but found it on amazon.com.My friends and I have had a blast with it and now it's lent out to someone and I'm anxious to get it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jonathan Cainer Zodiac
This is the fifth copy of this book that I have ordered, I love this book, it is so much fun to charter people, to share with people, its a great gift,I take it to parties to show people how to chart, I keep wearing out my copies and loaning it to people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Informed.
This book is very knowledgable about astrology. It simplifies the concept of aspects into a very easy to read format. It goes more into depth on the subject of lunar signs. So, all told, this is an EXCELLENT book for those new to astrology as well as those well aquainted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and Brilliant
ARCHETYPES is a must-read for anyone interested in Astrology. It is the BEST book of its kind - actually a classic. Combining deep psychological truths with spirituality, the astrology is woven into a beautiful context.
Easy to follow. You'll look up the charts of everyone you know! I did!! Thanks Kathleen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Symbolism & Astrology
How does the symbolism of mythology affect how we read charts for others? This book uncovers the twelve astrological types of individuals and their background in mythology. A great book if you want to thoroughly understand each sign.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Understanding How Astrology, Archetypes, and Mythology
I loved this book and learned a lot from it.There is so much here that you won't get from an ordinary astrology book. The most interesting part of astrology (in my opinion), is its connection to mythology and how the various archetypal energies in astrology relate.

Fun for anyone who enjoys depth psychology, even if astrology isn't a major interest. For anyone interested in astrology, it's an absolute must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant -- has the ring of truth - 6 stars ******
Burt has done a masterful job writing about astrology from a mythical and Jungian perspective. She truly understands the signs of the zodiac and the issues they represent in our lives. Her comments on the natal sun progressing during the life cycle are especially illuminating. To my mind, this book is one of the classic texts of modern astrology.I return to it repeatedly for fresh insights about the celesial craft. It is, hands down, the most influential astrology text I have read in the past decade.Burt's volume ranks with Bob Hand's "Planets in Transit" as a treasured astrological resource. It deserves 6 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommend This Book!
I'm a professional Astrologer and have been teaching classes since 1978. I frequently recommend this book to my more advanced students who really want to learn about the deeper archetypal patterns in psychological astrology. AGREAT book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Fortean Approach
Curt Rowlett is about the only one writing along the lines of the classic Charles Fort to record the events of the odd and unusual. He also takes it beyond that and does his own investigations. His compilation Labyrinth 13 is both a history of odd happenings and an analysis of these events. He offers possible solutions and gives the reader insights into such bizarre and macabre crimes as the Zodiac killings, the Palm Island murders, and the Manson cult.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a taste of Fort into the 21st century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Labyrinth13 and the Occult of Curt Rowlett
For years, I was a true crime buff.I still possess more useless knowledge about some of America's infamous serial killers than I care to admit to.Give me a good "true" ghost story or A&E/ Travel Channel historical haunting feature or reality ghost hunting show and I'm glued to the television for hours. So, when Curt Rowlett approached us with his three books devoted to mysteries, murder, and the occult, I immediately wanted to read all of them!

Labrinth13 is my favorite of the three, and covers the subject matter of the other two books which I will discuss in this review as well. L13 is divided into three sections: Occult, Crime, and Conspiracy. There is an outstanding introduction where Rowlett explains how this book was born out of a website he created by the same name to record his research while preserving his artistic integrity and capturing a reading audience.Rowlett even goes into great detail to explain where the title came from, giving a nice explanation as to the fear behind the infamous number 13 while citing a long list of historical events and information related to 13 including classical composer Arnold Shonberg who suffered from triskaidekaphobia which is a fear of the number 13.And he had a right to be afraid of it.He was born on Friday the 13th, and died on Friday the 13th and 13 minutes before midnight!

Vampire fans will enjoy the first chapter of the Occult section where Rowlett explores the history of Bram Stoker's Dracula and how Stoker might have also been inspired by unknown vampiric history that took place on American soil. This is based on newspaper clippings found in Stoker's papers about a Rhode Island vampire named Mercy Lena Brown who might have inspired Stoker's character named Lucy. Rowlett also covers werewolves in another chapter for those of you who enjoy lycanthropy over vampires.

Rowlett does an excellent job of weaving his research and theory into nice tight chapters that move at a decent pace, definitely keeping the reader interested, and also cause a few chills along the way.Take this opening paragraph as an example, from the story about a strange visitor to Edgar Allan Poe's grave:

For over 50 years since 1949, on the night marking the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's birth, a mysterious man-in-black has entered the cemetery where the master of the macabre lies buried, and, making his way through the dark shadows to Poe's grave, he places a partial bottle of expensive French cognac and three blood-red roses there, presumably as tokens of admiration and in tribute to the great author. This ritual completed, he then slips away into the night as quietly and as mysteriously as he came. The identity of this dark stranger -- dubbed "The Poe Toaster" by observers -- has never been revealed.

My favorite chapter in the Occult section is Chapter 8, where Rowlett covers several "uncanny occurrences" in small sections including an odd tale about Mary Shelley and her deceased husband's heart, one about Mark Twain and a Ouija Board, and another coincidence concerning Poe and the unfortunate fate of a literary character and two different real life men all named Richard Parker. Writers will also enjoy the frightening tale about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary and one man's "insane" passion for words.

Part 2 of the book, Crime, starts off with an extensive piece about the Zodiac killer, followed by focus on Charles Manson, David Berkowitz, and the Process Church and what role Christianity and Satanism both played in bringing fear to America during the late 70s and early 80s.Rowlett lays out some fascinating research on symbolism and how it also played an important role during this time.

Part 3 of the book, Conspiracy, begins with a bizarre look at how our government might have been involved in mind control and creating programmed assassins. Rowlett focuses on several well known gunman including Sirhan Sirhan, Lee Harvey Oswald (a favorite subject of mine in high school), James Earl Ray, and Mark David Chapman, pointing out their political ties, military background, and literary tastes. Rowlett also points out the odd rise of serial killers in the 1980s may have very well been "a stockpile of sleepers who woke up too early."

Consider that for the most part, serial killers tend to prey on the so-called "undesirables" of society, such as prostitutes, drug addicts, homosexuals, and other targeted minorities of the ultra-right wing. (The FBI's Behavioral Science Unit has stated that as many as 150 serial killers may be operating undetected in the United States). Serial killers, like mind-controlled sleepers, outwardly appear normal to the rest of the world, but also seem to be acting under a programmed obsession to kill, usually in the same way, over and over again, as if trying to fulfill some sort of mission that is echoing around in their heads.

I have to commend Rowlett on his research and attention to detail. The notes, resources, and appendix of this book is well over 100 pages.

Rowlett's book, Riding on Your Fears, is a 67 page essay and more extensive look into the Manson Family and the murders they committed.Rowlett mentions Manson quite a bit in L13 and discusses in great detail the effect Manson might have had on the hippie movement.

Could Manson be considered a true counter-culture revolutionary? Was he a well-intentioned, but ultimately misunderstood guru whose followers took it upon themselves to murder for him? Or was he, as the prosecutor at his murder trial portrayed him, simply a crazed cult leader and career criminal? This book contends that Manson is a varied combination of all of those things.

Through research and interviews, Rowlett points out several mysteries behind Manson, his "family," and the infamous murders he's still known for today.Rowlett also discussesseveral rumors and urban legends that have followed Manson over the years.

I have to admit I had never heard of Palmyra Island before reading Rowlett's book, The Curse of Palmyra Island. It's a small South Pacific atoll which is shrouded in mystery much like the Bermuda Triangle. It has a long history of strange events, supernatural occurrences, and murder. Much of Rowlett's 72 page essay is featured in L13, but in this book Rowlett also covers the history of the island along with a map and beautiful illustrations.

Rowlett cites a book called And The Sea Will Tell which focuses on a sailing couple, Mac and Muff Graham, who were killed in 1974 on the island by another couple who were inhabiting it. Rowlett was later contacted by and given the chance to interview a lady named Sharon Jordan who actually discovered the remains of Muff Graham washed ashore on the island seven years later. Mac Graham's remains have still not been found to this day.

When I see things like this in the news, or read of a murder in the newspaper, I'm always the one who questions everything and usually suspects the most bizarre and unusual thing to have happened. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Curt Rowlett's work because of my fascination with such stories. He is truly a well versed student and expert of the supernatural and occult.

If you are a fan of such writing, theories, mysteries, and more, then you can visit Curt on the web and read more of his work at [...].

4-0 out of 5 stars An informative book and, more importantly, fun!
One person who reviewed "Labyrinth13" here at Amazon described reading the book as "a blast."I agree completely.I had so much fun reading this collection of "weird" topics that I forgot I was actually learning something in the process!

As a researcher myself, I respect that instead of just presenting hearsay as fact as so many writers are apt to do, Rowlett obviously studies the available evidence relating to a given topic before sitting down to write.(For example, he consulted original Process literature and spoke with several former members of the sect before writing his essay on The Process.)Consequently, he is able to accomplish something admirable, namely, he explores offbeat/obscure topics without coming off like someone who has passed beyond the lunatic fringes of society.

I hope Rowlett keeps the books coming for a long time to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reasoned thought on the odd, the macabre, and the terrifying
Curt Rowlett brings a great deal of welcomed reasoned analysis to subject matter usually told with breathless, sensational hyperbole.Investigations into the usual cast of characters -- the Zodiac Killer, Son of Sam, Charles Manson -- are side-by-side with more obscure but equally fascinating uncanniness. This book's strengths are Rowlett's sharp compression of different sources and his own investigatory work and interviews.Even without the breathless hyperbole, there is enough creepiness in this book to make you sleep with the nightlight on.

The chapter on Charles Manson, Son of Sam, and the Process Church is a good example.Rowlett makes clearheaded analyses while poking around at the stories' edges and their wild possibilities.(Who knew that the Son of Sam may have been the sons of Sam?)And Rowlett's not shy from taking on those who make wild claims ("smoke pumpers") for their own reasons.

My favorite chapter is on Palmyra, a bucolic island with a creepy, bloody history. That the murder of a monied boating couple by two scraggly hippies could be as gripping as chapters on the Zodiac Killer and the Manson Family proves that Rowlett knows how to spin a tale while fleshing out what's real, what's possible, and what's been left unexplained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Curt's a (He's my AmAzon bud..) good guy.
The sheer collection of interesting tales and their variance makes for a five star publication. One has howling Dogs that are ghosts, and the Zodiac Killer.Darlene Ferrin was one of his victims.Let's keep that name alive anD the names of other vicTims. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good pocket reference book
I bought this book about two weeks ago because I wanted to do some research for a book I'm writing. I have studied astrology off an on for about 9 years. I used to have a similar book called Seduction by the Stars and I went looking for another book that described astrology, relationships, and sex since I'm writing an erotic romance novel.

I found this book useful because it goes into the personality of each sign, but then it also has a section on the games that each sign plays. For example: A Leo woman has several games-The Prima Donna, The Puppet Master, The Actress, and The Drama Queen. An Acquarius man will play The Media Man, The Guru, The Stalker, and The Object of Your Devotion. I liked the game playing sections because it gave me material I could draw from. Rowan Davis explores both the positive and negatives of each sign, so you're getting a pretty realistic picture of that sign's traits.

Every sign has several sections in the book: The Male, The Female, Top Traits Explored, Sex with this sign, Preferred Games, and What He/She Needs to Learn About Sex.

The book is 326 pages, but it's about half the size of a trade paperback. Everything is organized so that you can easily skip to the chapter you want and find exactly what you need.

The only thing I would advise is if you are into astrology, also find out your partner's birthday and birthplace. If you have a full chart done, you can find out the moon, ascendant, venus & mars, which will give a more complete picture.I'm a Gemini, but only about half of the stuff applies to me. I have strong Cancer, Capricorn, and Taurus in my chart, so if a guy read only Gemini, it wouldn't give him the best understanding of my habits. ... Read more

Product Description
Who you should flirt with, who you should marry, and who you should avoid!

Stella Hyde urges readers to take no notice of any of those cozy compatibility charts found in magazines. No one is actually compatible with anyone else; we just all get swept away by lust or, deafened by the thrash-metal tick of the biological clock, shut down all critical facilities.

Part 1 of Darkside Zodiac in Love is "I'm Your Venus," which is all about the planet of L.O.V.E. and Libra and Taurus--the signs it rules directly--and the havoc they can play in our lives. Part 2 shows how love hurts all the way around the zodiac. It identifies the cheaters, describes how members of each sign conduct themselves on dates and perform in bed, and provides compatibility charts and blind-date guides.

Darkside Zodiac in Love will help readers take a cold, hard look at all the shabby tricks, manipulations, lies, and cruel intentions each sun sign tries to hide. It won't mend a broken heart, but it will tell readers who they are compatible with and who is likely to murder them in their sleep! It also tells readers what conniving, two-timing, icy-hearted little love rats they really are, but then nothing comes for free, does it?!

* Snarky, snarky--we all take love too seriously and astrology not seriously enough. ... Read more

This was a funny book, and possibly insightful as well if you can perceive the core of the commentary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good laugh
This book is good for anyone who has a sense of humor and enjoys astrology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very funny but some rehash
I am assuming this book came out after the Darkside Zodiac book initially did. Many parts of the original book have been duplicated but this does go into some more detail of the signs and how none of them are going to get along.

Again it's a very funny book and an enjoyable read - I love showing it to friends for a laugh.

Above the Zodiac: Astrology in Jewish Thought uncovers the profound connection between Jewish mysticism and classic astrology by citing the many references scattered throughout Jewish literature to the influence of the stars on human destiny. Rabbi Matityahu Glazerson gives a month-by-month rendering of Jewish astrology according to kabbalah, summarizing the complex system of elements in Jewish thought that correlates to each astrological sign. 3-0 out of 5 stars Controversial but interesting
There is no rabbinical approbation on such a book (which is necessary in this field). The author does quote numerous rabbinical sources (however accurate they maybe is open to interpretation) - mainly the Ariz"al and the Zohar, as well as Rabbeinu Bachaya, Ramban and Ibn Ezra.I thought the historical map at the end was a nice summary of the book, but was not produced by the author. It was certainly an interesting find, the English translations and discussion should however be researched before any conclusions should be drawn from such a work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Star stuff
Seemingly without exception, Western agnostics and atheists equate astronomical symbolism knowingly employed by ancient mystical writers as some evidence of religion being "bogus" and religious figures being "literary hoaxes". But such is not the case. The plain fact is our worldview has changed. We moderns are conditioned to "scientifically" view our Cosmos actually as chaos - random agglomerations of disparate and unrelated facts. This is our worldview. Unless we step back and examine our a priori premises, any appreciation of our true place in a Cosmos that IS "cosmos" (beautifully well ordered) must of necessity elude us. Moreover, the votes are not all in whether we've got it right. Further, every good scientist (Feynman, Schrodinger, Heisenberg, Einstein, et alia) knows science *by definition* can make no meaningful refutation of the varieties of religious experience. Science and religion exist on two different planes of reality and human experience. And as Joseph Campbell observed, both the atheist and the religious fundamentalist "are stuck with their metaphor": The atheist *knows* the metaphor is false and the fundamentalist *knows* the metaphor is true. (Both *know* that their myth is most certainly *not* a metaphor.) True religious experience involves neither extreme.

The Hebrews are far more canny and deep in this area, having devoted thousands of years of careful study to religious symbolism and epistemology. The Hebrew (and Catholic) tradition views the incorporation of astronomical symbolism as both valid and necessary. To those with a mystical appreciation of the Cosmos and our place in it - as to the logical and well-ordered religious Hebrew mind - God doesn't create "random disparate facts". (As Einstein devoutly opined, "God doesn't play dice".) The Cosmos *is* a cosmos: There is order everywhere. Including the heavens.

Above the Zodiac: Astrology in Jewish Thought is a valuable resource for understanding the validity of astronomical symbolism in the Hebrew religious tradition. Like Mazzaroth by Frances Rolleston, which makes clear the incorporation of astronomical symbolism in the synoptic gospels, author Rabbi Glazerson provides an excellent discourse of twelve chapters (each devoted to one constellation) on astronomical symbolism in the Old Testament and Kabbalistic philosophy:

"Within Jewish literature, the source for the spiritual meaning of the astrological constellations is the Sefer Yetzirah ... whose authorship tradition attributes to the patriarch Abraham" (page ix).

This book is also a valuable reference for anyone studying the Western Hermetic Tradition's roots in the Sefer Yetzirah. Glazerson's analysis of the constellations Cancer (Hebrew, "Tammuz") and Sagittarius (Hebrew, "Kislev") sheds particular light on the Golden Dawn attributions of The Chariot to the eighteenth path and Temperance to the twenty-fifth path of the Hermetic Kabbalistic Tree. (There is, however, an editorial lapse from page 105 through page 107, in which material that belonged in the Tammuz chapter was erroneously placed in the Aquarius [Shevat] chapter.)

Highly praised for an (otherwise) extremely clear presentation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
For some reason, I thought the book would be bigger. It's like pocket sized.

I only found it semi-interesting.I thought it would give more insight, but I thought the explanations were short and vague. My husband said the one about his ex isn't accurate at all so. . .

4-0 out of 5 stars Really neat book~different than other astrology books
I was very pleased with this book! I thought it was a fresh idea and fun to read. Nice book to add to any collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!
This book both delighted and surprised me.

As a word of caution: it must be approached with the idea that you are looking for an explanation of someone you hate and not yourself as this book describes the negative aspects that some people may find it hard to admit to.

Other than that, the writing was wonderful, and the humor was a breath of fresh air for astrology. I look forward to many more books from Miss Davis as this book was both well-written and highly accurate. Apparently, she conducted her own research for this book rather than just spitting out the same astrological generalities over and over again like so many other writers do, and that research has made Ex Files extremely accurate and up-to-date. She has succeeded in bringing astrology to today's culture. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars If You Like Slogging Your Way Through Heavy English and Cumbersome Sentence Structures You'll Love This Book!
The Sabian Symbols in Astrology: A Symbol Explained for Each Degree of the Zodiac
I bought this book as a reference for the original Sabian Symbols Index as devised by Ms Elsie Wheeler and the author so that I could compare later interpretations of the Symbols and, for that purpose, it's a great reference work for any serious student of astrology.
On the other hand, Dr Marc Edmon Jones ain't a PhD for nothin'! Attempting to read this thing all the way through is like trying to cut your way thru a dense jungle with a damn pocket knife!
The sentences are cumbersome and by the time you've slogged your way through an entire sentence you've forgotten what the author's original thought was and just what point he was trying to make. It's a lot like reading anything by Carl Gustav Jung; while he may have been a gifted psychologist, he couldn't frame a clean, precise thought in a sentence even if he used a scalpel and a bar of soap!
(Anyone who tells you they read and understood Jung is lying!)
Enjoy, Pilgrims!

5-0 out of 5 stars Richness in symbolism
An expensive little book this is, but very valuable in the symbolism offered by another astrological master. For every degree of the zodiac, there is a special symbolic vision that goes with it, which Jones has enumerated for us. This can make the astrology chart become alive with visual imagery and richer yet in symbolism. Better than a tarot deck, and deeper! By one of the masters.

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL
This is one of the books that changed my life, yes its a little hard to read at times but WOW - the power in it - it is life changing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another version...
... for a 1st book on the subject, I would recommend this version. The author includes chapters on: "planets & character traits", "Rectification using Symbols", & info on using them for daily guidance (by using the Symbol for the sunrise degree). They can be used w/ Horary charts as well. If you've no book on the Sabian Symbols, definitely try this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astrology and Oracle in one book!
Astrology is an area of spirituality that has been distorted by popular use. However, this book opens new possibilities for astrology both as a traditional predictive tool, and as a means of personality integration. The book has 1000 horoscope examples of real people, and some well-considered theory mundane and Horary Astrology, of which the last of these is original. Most importantly, this book presents the Sabian Symbols. To my knowledge this was the first publication of the symbols, yet many books have published them since.

What are the Sabian Symbols? Well, each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac is assigned a "symbol", such as for example "Taurus 22 - White dove over troubled waters".Then, this symbol is given a positive and a negative slant in a paragraph of text, as well as a keyword, in this case Taurus 22 degrees is "Guidance".The symbols add value to any horoscope, but there's more!

The symbols in this book are excellent and practical as a kind of modern day "I Ching".That is, you can ask a question (of your higher self), then select a symbol using a random selection to find out your answer.A good way to do this is for example, to have two stacks of normal playing cards. For the stack to select the zodiac sign use:- Aries - King of Hearts; Taurus - Queen of Hearts; Gemini - Jack of Hearts; Cancer - King of Diamonds; Leo - Queen of Diamonds; Virgo - Jack of Diamonds; Libra - King of Spades; Scorpio - Queen of Spades; Sagittarius - Jack of Spades; Capricorn - King of Clubs; Aquarius - Queen of Clubs; Pisces - Jack of Clubs.

Then, for the selection of the degree of that sign, use: hearts 1-10 for 1 to 10 degrees, diamonds 1-10 for 11 to 20 degrees, hearts 1-10 for 21 to 30 degrees.

So, for example, Taurus 22 degrees using this system would be denoted by "Queen of hearts" = Taurus, "2 of clubs" = 22 degrees.

I have used this book "off and on" over the past ten years together with the similar book by Dane Rudhyar. The latter I found had similar and complementary text descriptions for the symbols. In my opinion, the symbols have even more far-reaching possibilities. They can be used as a device to learn "clair-seeing" where the world we walk in can be interpreted prophetically by reading into the symbolisms noticed. This is a fascinating prospect but I've not seen any book working that way from the Sabian Symbols. The author Marc Edmund Jones spent 30 years on this one; a worthwhile endeavour as you can see from what I've said here. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Over my head.
This book is only for the serious astrologer.I only dabble in astrology and was a little over-whelmed with this book.If you only look at astrology books for a little fun when guests come over, this book isn't for you.If you're curious about the special aspects of you specific sign for you specific birth day though, this will head you in the right direction.Helps you get a better understanding of the parts of you that don't fall completely under your general sign for you month of birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rumors of my authorship exaggerated!!!!
This book is truly excellent, which is why I was delighted to write the Foreword for it! But 100% of the credit for writing the book itself goes to the brilliant and talented Mr Martin Goldsmith. I'd love to claim some of the glory, but alas the Lords of Literature would send me straight to Hell.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Fresh Interpretations
This book worth the read.Mr. Forrest channeled in some new symbols, many of which have resonated deeply with me.After each degree definition, he provides a variety of well-known, world figures (Writers, Actors, Politicians, Religious Leaders) and the placement (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, etc)of the degree. If you want more detailed information, check out Lynda Hill's latest masterpiece "360 Degrees of Wisdom" or Lyn Birkbeck's "The Astrological Oracle."The first book on these symbols "The Sabian Symbols in Astrology" by Dr. Marc Edmund Jones and Elsie Wheeler is also another Sabian Symbols book to check out if you're into this kind of astrological symbolism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will the REAL Sabian Symbols Please Step Forward!!!
WOW!!!

Of the 4-5 books on individual degree interpretation I've seen these last 35-yrs, this one is head, shoulders & torso above the rest.

I could see the points being made with Dane Rudhyar's poetic imagery in his fabulous "Astrological Mandala" these last 31-years since that gem was first published.

I've had the pleasure of meeting both Dane Rudhyar and Martin Goldsmith.Martin is most definitely more understandable.

I rectified my wife's natal chart and she acknowledged that Martin's assessment of her rectified Ascendant degree was on target.

Martin's delineations in Zodiac by Degree is to the awesome pinpoint.I was amazed by his accurate details.

Goldsmith's only psychological astrology rivals are Jefferson Anderson (Sun Signs/Moon Signs), Garth Allen (Taking the Kid Gloves Off Astrology), and the 2 Jungian babes:Liz Greene (Britain) & Karen Hamaker-Zondag (Netherlands).

(I was born in San Diego, just blocks away from where Alan Leo and his psychic collaborated on his Sabian Symbols text in the 1930s.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating, Lesser Known Aspect Of Astrology
"What are the degree symbols? Are they archetypes in the collective unconscious? Are they the divine ideas of Plato and the neoplatonists?" --Martin Goldsmith, author of The Zodiac by Degrees - 360 New Symbols

Astrology is the fascinating science and art that delves into who we are, why we are here, and why we do what we do. A lesser known component of Astrology is the degree symbols. When viewing an astrological chart, there are 360 tiny lines that intersect with the circumference. Each line is reprented by a degree, and there are 30 degrees within each Sign. Since there are 12 signs in the Zodiac, this adds up to 360 symbols. The degree symbols are not glyphs; rather, they are a symbolic picture of an individual's personal mythology and orientation.

If you were to have a chart generated by software or somewhere online, you'd be given the specific natal location of the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, planets, and so on. You'd also be given the degree of the placement. For example, according to my natal chart, the Sun is in 14 degrees Scorpio and the Moon is 18 degrees Aquarius. Whether using an astrology book or a generated report, the most information you're usually given would be the meaning of the Moon in Aquarius in the 11th House.

This is obviously more detailed and helpful than just an explanation for Moon in Aquarius! However, there is a discipline within Astrology that gets even more specific, and that is the realm of the 360 symbols. These ancient symbols are most commonly known as the Sabian symbols, but there are other symbolic systems that exist. Most Astrologers shy away from the 360 degree symbols, feeling that it only further complicates Astrology, or, that the Sabian symbols have been accurate at times, but largely hit-and-miss.

Author Martin Goldsmith, Ph.D (history) has studied the symbols of the zodiac for more than 30 years and has done extensive research on planets, signs and houses. After examining thousands of charts he realized that the Sabian symbols were more positive and accurate than other symbol systems; however, some of them had, at best, only a tangential relationship to the Sabian symbols.

In his new, 369-paged book The Zodiac By Degrees, Goldsmith offers an intriguing portrait of each of the 360 symbols. Mixing empirical research with intuition, he fills in the gaps and discrepancies outlined in the Sabian symbols--creating a whole new set of symbols. Astrologers will find this new book a fascinating addition to their interpretative tools, and the layman will discover a new way to see their astrological chart. You don't need to be an astrologer to use these symbols. Online, you can visit a site such as Astro.com to generate a free natal chart. (Scroll down to the section Chart Drawing, Ascendant.) Each degree in your chart is provided (e.g. Mars 11 Degrees Libra), so you can cross reference the degrees with the symbols in the book. If you're not sure of your exact birth time, your Ascendant (also known as rising sign) and House cusps may be off. However, the use of the descriptions of each symbol can be used to rectify your Ascendant.

Each degree has a symbolic phrase, a paragraph of descriptive phrases, and a listing of famous examples and their occupation, milestones, reason for notoriety, roles played (on stage or in movies) and so on. For example, my Moon is in 18 (degree) Aquarius. The symbolic phrase is:

An ominous silence falls as the last man at a masquerade party prepares to unmask. Outside, a thunderstorm is brewing.

A few of the descriptive phrases:

Exposing uncomfortable truths; unwillingness to relate on a phony, masky level (troublemakers, enjoy rattling people); bringing negative undertones to the surface and clearing the air; breaking through fears and doubts that isolate people from each other...)

Just a few of the famous examples listed for this degree symbol include:

*Madame Blatavasky (Jupiter. Seeker, mystic, founder of Theosophical Society, wrote Isis Unveiled)
*Frida Kahlo (Chiron. Painter)
*Joseph Campbell (Saturn. Jungian anthropologist-The Masks Of God)
*Roseanne Barr (North Node. Brought social realism to the TV sitcom)

The examples the author picks are specifically related to the symbol itself, which makes it much more interesting than "Roseanne Barr, actress".

One might ask why bother with a interpretative system that isn't cut and dried like the rest of astrology? I believe the author answers this question quite well:

"Imagistic astrology allows you to penetrate to the level of soul and spirit. Symbols are like 'windows to the soul', for, as religious thinkers have always known, symbols can put you in touch with the spiritual energies they represent. Keyword astrology, by contrast, has no real energy. When you read keywords, you begin and end by checking off points on a mental list--That's true; that's true; that's not true. Symbols have the power to engage your intuitive faculties. They help you make a direct connection with a person's basic spiritual energies and penetrate the private language of their personal mythology."

I have found the information on each symbol of my natal chart to be an amazingly accurate portrayal of the archetypal energies that have woven throughout my life. I also compared the book to my husband's chart, yielding fascinating insights. Seasoned astrologers will find The Zodiac By Degrees an invaluable expansion to their interpretive tools. Non-astrologers will appreciate the added depth and breadth that the degree symbols provide to natal chart interpretation. ... Read more
