Product Description

The Xenarthra are an order of the mammals consisting of the armadillos, anteaters, and sloths. The Biology of the Xenarthra is the first authoratative study of the Xenarthra in a generation.

The volume features an impressive group of international scholars who explore the current biology and ecological status of these mammals in each of the geographic regions they inhabit. Many of these populations reside in developing countries, and before now, information on these species has been scarce.

Topics cover a wide array of issues including genetics, physiology, behavior, ecology, and conservation. Discussions range from paleontological perspectives on xenarthran evolution to both lab and field-based studies of living species. Contemporary research in areas such as genome sequencing and leprosy in armadillos is also included.

Description:
The Santacrucian (early-middle Miocene) fauna is exceptional in its richness (over 70 species recorded in 21 stratigraphic levels). In this contribution we attempt a preliminary paleobiological characterization of the armadillos (Dasypodidae and Peltephilidae). Santacrucian Dasypodidae includes the genera Prozaedyus Ameghino, Proeutatus Ameghino, Stenotatus Ameghino, and Stegotherium Ameghino. The Peltephilidae include the genus Peltephilus Ameghino and others undergoing systematic revision. Body masses and locomotory habits are inferred from the sizes of the proximal and middle shaft dimensions of the limb bones from allometric equations and indices previously modeled in living dasypodids. Masticatory and dietary interpretations are based on the jaw mechanics, the analysis of the temporomandibular joint and mandibular symphysis, and the shape, arrangement and wear patterns of teeth. The body mass averages are 15.28 kg for Proeutatus, 3.72 kg for Stenotatus, 1.12 kg for Prozaedyus, 11.47 for Stegotherium, and 11.07 kg for Peltephilus. The diversity in limb bone proportions is not so marked as in the living species; forelimb indices reflect proportions similar to those of the living dasypodines and euphractines, all of whom are relatively good diggers. None of the Santacrucian taxa reach the degree of cursoriality of Tolypeutes Illiger, the extreme fossoriality of Priodontes F. Cuvier, or the subterranean habits of Chlamyphorus Harlan. Within a potentially generalized omnivory, some specializations can be easily detected within the Santacrucian armadillos: herbivory in Proeutatus and Peltephilus, and myrmecophagy in Stegotherium. This could help to explain the potential coexistence of so many genera in a single area, diminishing the degree of competition for resources. ... Read more

Product Description
Armadillos are small placental mammals, known for having a leathery armor shell. The Dasypodidae are the only surviving family in the order Cingulata, part of the superorder Xenarthra along with the anteaters and sloths. The word armadillo is Spanish for "little armored one". There are approximately 10 extant genera and around 20 extant species of armadillo, some of which are distinguished by the number of bands on their armor. Their average length is about 75 centimeters (30 in), including tail; the Giant Armadillo grows up to 1.5 m (5 ft) and weighs 59 kg (130 lbs), while the Pink Fairy Armadillos are diminutive species with an overall length of 12?15 cm (4?5 in). All species are native to the Americas, where they inhabit a variety of environments. In the United States, the sole resident armadillo is the Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), which is most common in the central southernmost states, particularly Texas. Their range is as far east as South Carolina and Florida and as far north as Nebraska. ... Read more

They are arboreal residents of the rainforests of Central and South America. The sloth's taxonomic suborder is Folivora, while some call it Phyllophaga. Both names mean "leaf-eaters"; the first is derived from Latin, the second from Greek. Names for the animals used by tribes in Ecuador include Ritto, Rit and Ridette, mostly forms of the word "sleep", "eat" and "dirty" from Tagaeri tribe of Huaorani, in Brazil sloths are commonly called "Bicho-preguiça" ("lazy animal") because of slow movements related to their very low metabolism. Description:
The maned sloth is a poorly known species endemic to the highly fragmented and disturbed Brazilian Atlantic forest. As this species has a strictly forest habitat and low dispersion ability, it is susceptible to local extinctions in small and isolated fragments. The project started in 1994, translocating stranded sloths found within or nearby urban zones into forest reserves located in Santa Teresa, state of Espi@?rito Santo. Five translocated, radio-collared adults were monitored monthly from periods lasting from 10 months to 3 years after release and data on activity budgets, diet, and home range size were analysed. Results showed that moving and feeding time and distances travelled daily were not significantly related to translocation time (i.e., time, in days, after release). One female, monitored for three years showed, however, a steady and significant decrease in time spent moving from the first to the second to the third year of monitoring (regression Analysis; p<0.05). The distances it travelled/day also decreased throughout this same period, but results were not significant (ANOVA; p>0.05). Sloths explored the area more intensively in the first 6 months after release, but minor changes in home ranges were detected even after 3 years. Results suggest that maned sloths are amenable to translocation experiments provided that source and release sites are floristic and ecologically similar. To fully access the success of such experiments though, it is recommended that sloths be monitored for periods longer than 1 year. ... Read more
