Not just a textbook...
I purchased this book for a college class called "Wetland Environments", but it is so much more than just a textbook. It's easy to understand and very informative regarding all things wetlands.I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the topic or natural ecosystems and wildlife management in general.

Good for learning the basics quickly
This is a good book for the brand new person to wetlands, or the intermediate person who needs a refresher. I am the latter, and I have found that there are new insights or anecdotes in this book that I never knew. Also, I like the figures.

I'm a fan of pictures, and there are not many of those...

The Bible for Wetland Researchers
This book is a must have for all wetland researchers, managers, scientists, and anyone with a general interest in wetland ecosystems. If I had to choose 1 wetland book, this is it. It is one of THE most popular textbooks for university wetland courses and workshops. I have been a wetland scientist for almost 15 years, and this is one of the books I use on a regular basis, and recommend to all my assistants and students. Wetland researchers will also want to keep in mind that with the release of the 4th edition, this 3rd edition is still a must have in your wetland library. The 4th edition removed all the wetland ecosystem specific chapters that are in this edition, so this edition is far from outdated. Don't choose one over the other! Buy them both :).

The Mitsch & Gosselink Wetlands 4th edition arrived promptly and in very good condition as was claimed it would by the seller.

GROSS!I can handle a book about sex, I can handle filthy language, but the "eating" of everything bodily was DISGUSTING.

heals the body but not the soul
by creating a protagonist with nasty and excessive habits, sexual and non-sexual, and a painful physical failing, a character in need or already in the care of a physician, charlotte roche writes a novel philip roth might had written were he a woman in his 30s.

roth somewhere said that everything he writes he strains through the works of kafka, no surprise coming from the novelist who gave us one of his most kafka inspired writings, The Breast.however, in roche's fiction we're not privileged to a transformation.

the body part troubling eighteen year old helen memel is her anus. and not only her hemorrhoids which she describes, as she describes whatever is at hand, in minute detail, but, specifically, an infected lesion inside her anus requiring excision. helen asks robin, her male nurse: 'Do they stretch your [ ] open wide enough to fit multiple hands into it?' 'Yes, I'm afraid so.That will be the source of most of the pain when the anesthesia wears off in a few minutes.'

the operation and aftermath finds her confined to the hospital, mostly her room, mostly her bed, in the theme of kafka's enclosed spaces, where, like portnoy, but without the psychologist, memel pours out her story to an invisible listener, the reader, in a voice reminiscent of salinger's holden caulfield.and like roth's mickey sabbath, helen memel ends her story with an act of transgression without revelation -- unless helen's moment of acceptance that her parents are in control of their own lives suffices as an intimation that childhood has to end; though, i suspect that's not how helen leaves the hospital.

also metaphor, represented by two symbols, helen's tush and her hobby of growing avocado trees, further elevates Wetlands to intelligent fiction.

Not that exciting
I read about this book in a magazine and I thought it would have been a fantastic read, however I wish I would have picked another read.I am one of those people who cant start a book without finishing it (cant help it) bad read or not.I could not wait to finish reading this book, next time I will do better research!! Maybe this is a better book for a rebellious teenager Thats all I have to say.

Interesting look into mental illness
Wow... this novel shocked me and at times it was just too much. And yet the one thing that took me a long time to get is that the main character is mentally ill. She has so much going on in her head and this is not simply just a case of teenage rebellion. This is actually someone who is not ok. So just as I was laughing or gasping or dry heaving, I was also very sad.

I am glad I read it and had my thoughts provoked but good god am I glad its over and I can move on and sell the book on ebay.

Political Correctness Carries The Day Against a Novel of Little Worth
OK, so women don't have the same choice in pornography as men. Nor do they have the "quality." Charlotte Roche has capitalized on this disparity by claiming feminist rights for Wetlands. It's frank all right; it breaks taboos. But there are taboos worth preserving and "good" porn, literary porn, is characterized by its allusiveness not by its graphic in-your-face-ness. I give you Fanny Hill as an example of what I'm saying. After all, porn is supposed to enhance desire. So, if anything, Wetlands is antiporn. It is more likely to make you sick to your stomach than to titillate.

Right. I'm a man. Roche has attempted to preempt male criticism of Wetlands by announcing that most men find it disgusting. I am honored to be included among men who find Wetlands disgusting. It is relentlessly so. The insubstantial armature that is supposed to sustain the novel, the protagonist's (Helen's) desire to reunite her divorced parents by keeping herself in the hospital after an anal operation is completely incredible. It's just thrown into the mash.

For a short novel, Wetlands seems long, a tribute to the author's ability to prolong the grotesquerie.

But, hey, see for yourself. Don't say, though, that you weren't warned. ... Read more

This is the best book ever written for identification of fresh and saltwater aquatic and wetland plants along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.

I can't believe that it's out-of-print in paperback as this constitutes a great void in the available knowledge for the growing number of people who are becoming interested in learning about these plants and identifying which ones are valuable to wildlife, and which ones are detrimental.

A must have for the Serious Amateur
I have found this book extremely useful for me an interested amateur with no technical background. I find the book very accessible. The illustrations and photos are very good and the text is excellent.

An excellently titled book
This is a great introduction to wetlands ecosystems! This book begins with an introduction to what a wetland ecosystem is and how it works, giving examples of wetlands in various parts of the US. Each type of wetland ecosystem is presented with a list of plants and fungi found there described in moderate detail, including their niche in the ecosystem. Plants and fungi that may have special interest to the reader are examined in more detail at the end of this section. This book also covers the year-round changes in this ecosystem, tips on observation, specimen collection, and on keeping a nature journal. A section at the end of the book offers various activities and investigations that the reader may find interesting and helpful in understanding more about this threatened ecosystem.

This book would be a great read for anyone who is interested in nature, wetlands, or being a naturalist. It is not so detailed that beginners would be overwhelmed and not so simplistic that a moderately experienced naturalist would find it too light. I checked it out of the library but immediately ordered my own copy! ecologic exegesis extraordinaire!
This is a beautiful book.

I don't mean pretty or delightfully literate, though it's those as well. I mean it's intelligent. It condenses, codifies and communicates a carefully considered catalogue of Vermont's natural communities. In a world of intuitive opinion and idle speculation this is a sober, empiric, bright-cut jewel.

Liz Thompson has crisscrossed the state evaluating sites for The Nature Conservancy. She's more familiar with Vermont than I am with my front yard. Eric Sorenson is Natural Communities Ecologist for the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Natural Heritage Program. He might know as much as she does, if that's humanly possible. Between them they've parsed our landscape into precisely described biologic community types. How finely have they defined? Click the picture to look inside. Check out the table of contents. Examine the densely packed information and consistent organization. Read some of the unpretentious but supple and cogent expository prose. ~80 communities are described, grouped and explained: what defines them, what generated and still sustains them, how they are related, where to find them.

There is no essay component. A huge amount of information is distilled to be searchable (it's color coded!) and disciplined to be readable. Concise to the point of being wiry, it's still substantial, with exhaustive appendices to explain and cross-reference any technical details in the main text. Included are diagnostic flora lists, implacably factual descriptions, and precise place designations, all in plain English. Anyone can read and understand this book. After the introductory first 75 pages its entertainment value diminishes and reference character emerges - it is a guide book after all - but who can fail to be entranced by a guide so pregnant with information you practically absorb it through your fingertips? Every paragraph is educational, demonstrating both how much some of us know and how much none of us yet knows. You'll know more, and have a fuller framework for understanding what you already knew, every time you delve into this book.

"Wetland, Woodland, Wildland" focuses on a small state, but everyone in Vermont should own a copy. Anyone else interested in the dramatic variety of Vermont's remarkable landscape and the stellar quality of Vermont's scholarship should consider owning a copy.

The index is good, the bibliography outstanding. Common specific names are incorporated in the text, scientific equivalents supplied by an appendix. Diagnostic lists include specific common names whenever they exist.There is a glossary but the few technical terms employed are also defined in context. Most individual plant and animal images are photographic; most landscape and habitat images are line drawings. All are created and scaled to their task with only I think 4 pages of primarily decorative full bleed pictures. Fully coated stock makes every line sharp. Range maps are all on the same outline. Especially gratifying to me is that page design and typography, while complex and compact, is clear and consistent. Proofreading appears to be perfect. This is a well-crafted work. It feels good, looks good, reads easily and will make you smarter about where you live.

That's a beautiful thing.

Fabulous natural community descriptions!
Being new to Vermont I had a lot to learn of the structure and contents of the natural communities here. This book is well organized and packed with information not only for VT but for the surrounding states as well because the habitats may exist in NY, NH, MA, CT and even Canada. As Tom Vechten pointed out it may be difficult to read from cover to cover but if you read most of the beginning chapters I think it is safe to venture to the regions that interest or concern you. Nice pictures and great line drawings help with visualization. The maps for each section are also useful but it will still be up to you to figure out which habitat you are actually standing in at any given moment, however, the book will guide you to narrow the decision. I think this is an outstanding guide to the region and I recommend it to biologists, naturalists, ecologists, hikers, campers, hunters, outdoorsman, foragers and anyone interested in learning about the history to structure of Vermonts amazing landscape. A big THANK YOU to the authors for compiling this much needed resourceful guide and it's worth every penny!

If you love Vermont--understand it
As a resident of Vermont, I found this book to be one of the definitive works about Vermont's natural habitat. It is quite the eyeopener. The interactions of all the natural wonders of the state are completely explained, as well as the definitions of the specific ecosystems found everywhere. With this book I was able to map vernal pools, hemlock swamps and other sensitive habitats around me. Absolutely invaluable.

taking the next step
I came to this book as a relative beginner in nature observation, I could pick out the major tree species, but not much more than that.This guide was of tremendous help to me in learning to see relationships between tree types and the soil, exposeur, water, and other plants.The text is focused on Vermont, but I found it very helpful in New Hampshire, and I am sure it would be useful in Maine and New York as well as some of the Great Lakes areas. It is also very beautiful to look at, though some what difficult to read straight through from cover to cover. Take it with you on a hike, or during fly season look at it when you get back.

Not a guide to be missed for the environmentally conscious
The next generation is going to be the key for saving much of the endangered wildlife in the world. "Going Blue: A Teen Guide to Saving Our Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, & Wetlands" discusses what teens can do now to save the endangered creatures of the ocean and fight climate change. All over the the world in many different climates, oceans and other bodies of water are endangered. With everything from political activism to practical little differences, and enhanced with many full color photographs, "Going Blue" is not a guide to be missed for the environmentally conscious.

not so useful
I was looking for a book that would be a good introduction to created wetlands, particularly treatment wetlands - something a little less massive than the recent tome by Kadlec and Wallace. This book wasn't what I was looking for.Although it covered the basics, (and had lots of design diagrams) the organization of the book is awful.It looks like the author just shoved a bunch of power-point presentations together and got it published. Even the numerous diagrams weren't much use, as most of them lacked information on scale and virtually all of them lacked information on loading rates, hydrology, etc.The theoretical considerations presented are also presented in such a general way as to be pretty much useless.There are a lot of case studies in the book, but I didn't get around to reading them.Overall, this book was light on the "principles" mentioned in the title.It might be worth $30, but I'm not convinced. ... Great book for kids.
An important subject in an easy to read book that combines art and learning.Good book.Who said learning can't be fun?

Very Disappointed
If you are looking for a book that will be truly informative on wetlands, this is not it.To start with the positive, we have purchased books by this author/illustrator in the past, and have been happy with them - America's Prairies and Grasslands, for example.However, these books seem to be laid out in the same way - by geographic area.That is not necessarily a bad idea; withgrasslands, the different types are largely dispersed geographically.But not so much with wetlands.There are marshes all over the U.S.!This kind of book would be much more usable if arranged by type of wetland.

Furthermore, some types of major wetlands are omitted entirely - salt marshes, for example.If you want to know what grows/lives there, you won't find it in this book.

Lastly, a big problem I have with this book is that areas that are not wetlands at all, such as pond or lakes, are heavily included.The author states that she has included them because "many wetland species live alongside or nearby these areas," but they were simply out of place and could be confusing to a child learning about wetlands.

Better choices are Wetlands by Darlene Stille, unfortunately textbookish, but does have some good general information, and Leapfrogging Through Wetlands by Nancy Field (Our daughter really liked this one; I thought it was okay, and it did have an interesting format).

Lively, fun, interesting
For a youngster this is the perfect introduction to an ecosystem found almost everywhere in the country. (Actually, I'm no youngster and I found the level was just right for me too.)

The illustrations are a delight--and accurate; the text quirky with sound science and bits of fun entertaining trivia.

If you're one of the few who doesn't have a wetland nearby, then you'll find some other books in this series that might cover your area (Prairies, Mountains, Deserts too) ... Read more

Best all-around book
I am a graduate student in wetland science, and have used this book as a beginning step to identifying aquatic plants in Ohio.Although there is no perfect field book for aquatic plants, this book does a good job at balancing comprehensiveness with economy.If you are only going to get one book on aquatic plants in this region, this is the best all-around book.

What did not fully impress me were the illustrations, which were sometimes misleading (though 90% are very good), and that the key is often depends too much on one feature, which only works if that feature is fully developed and unique from species not listed in the book (not always the case). Other keys do not have this problem as much, though it is always the challenge of keys.This would also leave me wondering when I would key out by elimination based on something genereral, such as, number of stamens, for example.I then find that the picture looks nothing like what I have keyed to.Sometimes, I learn that it's just a bad picture, and other times, I learn that a different species (usually upland) not listed in the book also keys out to the same entry because the key is not specific enough and the picture is too generic to distinguish. But once you do identify the plant, this book shares more useful information about the plant than most other books.

In conjunction with Chadde, we found these books indispensiblecompanions for our aquatic plants class:
Newcomb: Usually better pictures, easy identification (often, simply faster than the traditional keys for initial identification), perfect field size, but not phylogenically organized (important for learning families and identifying related species) or specific to wetlands (sometimes helpful for the facultative species not in Chadde, but not useful for the thousands of wetland sedges and rushes out there).
Crow and Hellquist: Incredible pictures (when present), better key, much more comprehensive (but only in dedicated wetland species--FACW-OBL, very few FAC, FACU, etc.), but too big and expensive for field work.
We also occasionally used Tiner, Peterson's, and some specific Ohio Wildflower books.

Of all the books, though, Chadde has the most wear.That tells me which one is most valuable. ... Read more
