4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Thorough. Fills a Need.
This book discusses the definition of the Radon transform, it's properties, it's relation to other transforms (Fourier, et al.), it's inverse, and so on. It is well documented. (It even contains a translationof Radon's original 1917 paper!)

This book is the most useful source ofsuch information I've found, so far. I judge it to be a bit challenging toadvanced undergraduate students in mathematics and engineering. Graduatestudents should be able to handle it and may also feel that it extendsthem.

Four stars instead of five because some of the proofs referencepapers apart from the book. It could be more readable, but it is quite goodas it is.

I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting and fabulous, technically sound, every page counts.
Stanley Roderick Deans shows us radon transforms like never before seen. This is quite a technically sound spell-bounding book. I have found every page to be useful. I even often go through it again and again on a daily basis. Quite a stunning techinical achievement. A must read for anyone serious about the study of mathematics. ... Read more

Product Description
Five years after Three Mile Island awakened Americans to the dread of radioactive release, a new and potentially more consequential radioactive threat was discovered in a Pennsylvania home. Touted as the second major cause of lung cancer, the radon problem was prominent as a leading environmental risk. However, widespread acceptance of this risk has never materialized. In this vibrant account, Edelstein and Makofske unveil the complex mix of social and scientific factors that have led to public and official misunderstanding of the geologic radon issue. The lessons of radon have great relevance in a contaminated world where people are increasingly surrounded by invisible environmental hazards, where uncertainty and controversy shroud a clear understanding of the threat, and where one can choose apathetic acceptance or attempt to discern how to actively protect oneself and one's family. ... Product Description
The WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon is a key product of the WHO International Radon Project, which was launched in 2005. The Handbook focuses on residential radon exposure from a public health point of view and provides detailed recommendations on reducing health risks from radon and sound policy options for preventing and mitigating radon exposure.

The material in the Handbook reflects the epidemiological evidence that indoor radon exposure is responsible for a substantial number of lung cancers in the general population.

The material is organized into six chapters, each introduced by key messages. Usually, technical terms are defined the first time they are used, and a glossary is also included. Information is provided on the selection of devices to measure radon levels and on procedures for the reliable measurement of these levels. Discussed also are control options for radon in new dwellings, radon reduction in existing dwellings as well as assessment of the costs and benefits of different radon prevention and remedial actions. Also covered are radon risk communication strategies and organization of national radon programs.

This publication is intended for countries planning to develop their national radon programs or extend such activities, as well as for stakeholders involved in radon control such as the construction industry and building professionals.

The overall goal of this Handbook is to provide an up-to-date overview of the major aspects of radon and health. It does not aim to replace existing radiation protection standards, rather it emphasizes issues relevant to the comprehensive planning, implementation and evaluation of national radon programs. ... Over the past decade, the field of image processing has made tremendous advances. One type of image processing that is currently of particular interest is "tomographic imaging," a technique for computing the density function of a body, or discontinuity surfaces of this function. Today, tomography is widely used, and has applications in such fields as medicine, engineering, physics, geophysics, and security. The Radon Transform and Local Tomography clearly explains the theoretical, computational, and practical aspects of applied tomography. It includes sufficient background information to make it essentially self-contained for most readers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars There are much better books on mathematics of tomography
I bought this book, but found it pretty much useless. In my opinion, its presentation of techniques and the history of the subject is skewed. Authors' contributions are presented in an overinflated manner, so the reader would never guess that sometimes there exist more powerful and at the same time simpler approaches. There are much better books on mathematics of tomography, for instance the ones written by F. Natterer. Analytically inclined readers would like to read other books on Radon transform, e.g. the one by S. Helgason. The old books directed towards applications by G. Herman and Kak and Slaney are still of value. There are also some good edited volumes on the subject. ... Read more

Product Description
Radiation, radioactivity, radon: these are words that, since Hiroshima, the Cold War, and Three Mile Island, have conjured fear and fascination for many Americans. The threat of nuclear war, however, was always abstract at best, and the possibility of a meltdown was seen primarily as a localized catastrophe.Yet the danger of radon--an invisible, odorless gas that could seemingly attack any home and afflict its residents with a deadly cancer--struck home in the 1980s when whole neighborhoods were deemed unsafe and homeowners were forced to relocate, often at great expense. But how much of a threat does radon really pose to Americans? Is the government's aggressive policy toward this "silent killer" warranted?Indeed, is there a legitimate threat at all? These are the important questions Leonard A. Cole asks in this provocative and fascinating new book, and his answers are ones that all homeowners will want to understand.

In clear, non-technical language, Cole dispels many of the myths surrounding radon as he makes recommendations for a coherent, reasonable environmental policy toward what is, certainly, a dangerous gas.But at what levels does radon become a health problem? From all the alarmist headlines ("Major Radon Peril Is Declared By U.S." screamed the New York Times in 1988), average Americans would never know that the threat of radon is much debated, among scientists as well as among government officials. They would never know that numerous European countries--with advanced environmental policies--see the radon levels found in homes and apartments as much less of a danger than we do.And they would never know that not even a single lung cancer death can be directly attributed to a radon-contaminated environment. As he carefully traces the development of the U.S.indoor radon policy, Cole illuminates the many scientific uncertainties that lie behind it, and challenges EPA's risk-cost assessment of radon levels. He shows, too, that no epidemiological study has confirmed that homeowners are at great risk, and exposes those who stand to gain from the policy decisions made in Washington.Since it is not caused by any industry, radon has been a politically convenient issue. Under the Reagan administration, for example, an aggressive radon policy proved an easy way to challenge the popular perception of an anti-environmental president. In the end, Cole convincingly argues for less strict radon regulations, and maintains that the average citizen must be involved in the decision-making process, and must be allowed to exercise her own informed judgment.

Thoughtful and timely, Element of Risk illuminates one of the most important public policy issues of our time.It is a book homeowners and taxpayers, scientists and policymakers, will find essential reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading if You Are Worried About Radon
Yes, this book really needs an update, but if you are worried about radon levels in your home, this book is required reading. The author clearly presents the science of radon and its relationship to lung cancer. He thoroughly reviews the data and, most importantly, the uncertainties involved in linking lung cancer rates to radon levels. You will learn that there isn't much disagreement about the scientific data but it has been used to reach widely-varying public policies on acceptable radon levels. He does a fine job of presenting the policy positions of people who think that the EPA 4 pc/l limit is too high, too low, or "just right".The author's sympathies are clearly with those who maintain that the EPA limit is too low, and he argues effectively for using the 10-20 pc/l limit that is the policy in other countries, - specifically Canada, Sweden, and Norway.

A good bit of the book is devoted to reviews of the US media coverage of radon issues and the struggles that politicians have had with setting public policy. These sections contain some interesting stories of bureaucratic confusion and mismanagement, but this part of the book is mostly of interest to students of media and political science.

My conclusion from reading this book is that you are a non-smoker, you should consider taking action if your long-term (3 months or more) radon levels are above 20 pc/l.Below that level, the health risks are somewhere between low and none. And if you are a smoker, quitting smoking will reduce your chances of getting lung cancer far more than anything you can do about radon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Objective and Useful
A worthwhile book. For those wanting to learn about radon, it is far better than the "dumbed down" publications the EPA provides to the general audience.Presents several points of view as to the possibleradon health threat. The book also provides insight into howone U.S.federal standard (the 4 pCi/L "limit") was set. What this bookreally needs is an updated edition.A lot more data have been collectedsince this book was published in 1993. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Calyx Of Our Dreams
What exactly this book is about I'm not at all sure that I have any plausible notion. One should certainly acquaint oneself with at least a smattering of the Whitechapel to Oxford to Cambridge geography and history before picking the book up.Also, it becomes necessary to come to know something of a (justifiably, to my mind) forgotten writer by the name of William Hope Hodgson.Further, the book is, in general, very challenging. If you aren't well-versed in many poets and writers and their most abstruse works, you will miss out on much that is of significance in this dark, meandering work.

But, aside from these ambiguous prefatory remarks, the thing that grabs the reader is Sinclair's mastery of the English language. His striking poetic descriptions are worth the rest of the occult muddle. Here are a few of these lines and passages:

"Night air hit their shamed, flushed faces like a cerebral insult.Rumours of tyre smoke and wet leaves. The smells by which Sileen navigated, the stink peculiar to this locality: a shed of maggots bred for fishermen, badly cured leather, forgotten dead things left on the hook."

"Massive ironwork gates. An agitation of leaves:ovate, deltoid, elliptic.Promiscuously mingled..."

"The curse of winter sunlight illuminating silted tributaries and overgrown paths."

"...the rusty nape of evening light."

"Their back-up, Rhab Adman, was scanning a low sky; a millrace of iron clouds, proletarian smoke, bad script, warnings. The beauty of horror chilled him.Destitute buildings with insurance-mascara windows, bricked entrances.A shifty, local moon with acid-erased features."

"Willows to the waterline.Melancholy.A lost hour between dusk and darkness.Shadows of the advancing dead."

If Sinclair's robust, poetic use of the language doesn't strike you, then I really couldn't recommend this book. It's too full of quirkiness, Brit-slang, arcana of all sorts to be appealing to most readers. - I'm not surprised at all that I'm the first to review it. - But, for what it's worth, the following passage seems to encapsulate the book's wayward theme to me:

"We are the calyx of our dreams. But are they our own?In dread, we fall victim to random nightmares.Outfalls of melancholy. We fear to close our eyes."

Product Description
This book provides the first unified examination of the relationship between Radon transforms on symmetric spaces of compact type and the infinitesimal versions of two fundamental rigidity problems in Riemannian geometry. Its primary focus is the spectral rigidity problem: Can the metric of a given Riemannian symmetric space of compact type be characterized by means of the spectrum of its Laplacian? It also addresses a question rooted in the Blaschke problem: Is a Riemannian metric on a projective space whose geodesics are all closed and of the same length isometric to the canonical metric?

The authors comprehensively treat the results concerning Radon transforms and the infinitesimal versions of these two problems. Their main result implies that most Grassmannians are spectrally rigid to the first order. This is particularly important, for there are still few isospectrality results for positively curved spaces and these are the first such results for symmetric spaces of compact type of rank >1. The authors exploit the theory of overdetermined partial differential equations and harmonic analysis on symmetric spaces to provide criteria for infinitesimal rigidity that apply to a large class of spaces.

A substantial amount of basic material about Riemannian geometry, symmetric spaces, and Radon transforms is included in a clear and elegant presentation that will be useful to researchers and advanced students in differential geometry. ... Read more

Product Description
Since their emergence in 1917, tomography and inverse problems remain active and important fields that combine pure and applied mathematics and provide strong interplay between diverse mathematical problems and applications. The applied side is best known for medical and scientific use, in particular, medical imaging, radiotherapy, and industrial non-destructive testing. Doctors use tomography to see the internal structure of the body or to find functional information, such as metabolic processes, noninvasively. Scientists discover defects in objects, the topography of the ocean floor, and geological information using X-rays, geophysical measurements, sonar, or other data. This volume, based on the lectures in the Short Course The Radon Transform and Applications to Inverse Problems at the American Mathematical Society meeting in Atlanta, GA, January 3-4, 2005, brings together articles on mathematical aspects of tomography and related inverse problems. The articles cover introductory material, theoretical problems, and practical issues in 3-D tomography, impedance imaging, local tomography, wavelet methods, regularization and approximate inverse, sampling, and emission tomography. All contributions are written for a general audience, and the authors have included references for further reading. ... Read more

This new book focuses on sampling and analysis, radon and radium in water supply wells, predictive models, geologic and hydrogeologic controls that influence radon occurrence, monitoring radon and other radioactivity from geologic sources and mining impacts on occurrence of radioactivity in ground water. Also discussed are occurrence, testing, treatment, and reduction of radon from groundwater. Because the most severe health hazard from indoor radioactivity results from inhalation of short-lived radioactive decay products of radon, the EPA scheduled a major conference early in 1987 on Radon, Radium, and Other Radioactivity in Ground Water-Hydrogeologic Impact and Application to Indoor Airborne Contamination. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not Exactly
Everything Helgason writes is incisive, insightful, and meticulously correct.I object a little bit with the only review I found at this location. It says that this book is not very useful for engineers. That depends a lot on the engineer. As a student at Caltech, I had several professors who were quite high level engineers. These were not people confused somehow by higher mathematics and technology. They were people who fully mastered the language of mathematics and went beyond the language itself to speak it in useful technological ways. For engineers and scientists with "horsepower," everything Helgason writes provides insight that is difficult to find elsewhere. The question isn't whether it is practical learning or not.It certainly is deeply practical. The question is whether the engineer in question (the reader) has the big intellectual engine required to digest and use it.There will inevitably be full, tenured professors at lesser institutions (I know many of them) who would consider this to be impractical learning. That view will not hold water at the top schools.
