5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service!
I received the book right when I needed it and the book was in better condition than I expected!I would be more than happy to do business with this seller again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight science, with all the evidence up front.
First of all, I'd like to say what's in this book for anyone wanting to know what they will learn by reading it.

The content of _Plant Physiology_ is not exactly what I was expecting. There was very little about the physical structure of plants: no explanation of sieve tubes, meristems, cortex, cork, flower structure or other elements that one might find in a physical description of plants. The reader's knowledge of those subjects was assumed.Similarly, there was no explanation of the foundational aspects of molecular biology.Again, the authors assume that the reader already understands DNA transcription, meiosis, mitosis, respiration, apoplast and symplast, and other basics of plant biology.

The topics of the chapters are:

Plant Cells
Energy And Enzymes
Water And Plant Cells
Water Balance Of Plants
Mineral Nutrition
Solute Transport
Photosynthesis - The Light Reactions
Photosynthesis - Carbon Reactions
Photosynthesis - Physiological And Ecological Considerations
Translocation In The Phloem
Respiration And Lipid Metabolism
Assimilation Of Mineral Nutrients
Secondary Metabolites And Plant Defense
Gene Expression And Signal Transduction
Cell Walls - Structure Biogenesis And Expansion
Growth And Development
Phytochrome And Light Control Of Plant Development
Blue-Light Responses - Stomatal Movements And Morphogenesis
Auxin - The Growth Hormone
Gibberellins - Regulators Of Plant Height
Cytokinins - Regulators Of Cell Division
Ethylene - The Gaseous Hormone
Abscisic Acid - A Seed Maturation And Antistress Signal
The Control Of Flowering
Stress Physiology

Although the emphasis is on molecular biology in most of these chapters, there are other topics as well.Photosynthesis is well discussed but is also well discussed in other books. However the chapters on water: the physics of how it is passively translocated from root to shoot, how turgor pressure is used to power cell growth, the effects of water stress, and so on, are not explained in the more elementary books I've read, and the extended explanations of plant hormones in the chapters on auxin to abscisic acid are deeper than I have read in more basic books.

The material in the book is supplemented by additional material on the website.Having read all of the web "topics" and "essays", I think I can say that the book stands alone quite well without them.If you are reading without access to the Internet, or don't want to go into greater depth, you don't need to.I found nothing in the book that couldn't be understood without reading the web pages. But the web pages do add depth to the topics they cover.

So much for what's in the book.

Where this book shines in my opinion is in its rigorous adherence to evidence and experiment. The authors never draw a conclusion without explaining the evidence for it.If the evidence is ambiguous, the authors describe the alternative explanations that have been proposed to account for it.The reader never feels that he's simply being lectured in the consensus science. He feels instead that he's being shown the evidence from which the logical conclusions follow. The reader comes away with a good picture of what scientists do and what scientific investigation is like, as well as a deeper understanding of plants.

I learned the answers to many questions that I have wondered about: How is water lifted to the tops of trees? (Passively, by negative water pressure induced by transpiration.)How high can a tree grow? (The limit is in the physics of water pressure.)How do plant cells grow when bounded by rigid cell walls? (Enzymes loosen the "glue" holding cellulose threads together and turgor pressure then pushes them apart.)How do plants survive freezing? (By increasing solute concentration, by translating proteins that prevent ice nucleation, and/or by withdrawing water into the apoplast or the roots.)And so on.

You won't learn everything there is to know about plants from this book. You have to know the basics before you start, and you have to be content with the specific topics of interest to the authors. But the topics that are covered are covered very well and the curious reader will learn a lot.

I'm not a scientist or even a college student, just an old guy with an interest in biology. My background preparation consists of a basic book in plant biology (Raven's), some basic chemistry, and some general biology.

It was enough. If you've got the basics under your belt, you'll be able to understand Taiz and Zeiger's book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plant physiology
The book is really good; it contains a lot of information, mainly for universitarian studies.
I rate it as really good for anyone who has to sustain vegetal physiology!

Introduction to Plant Physiology became the best-selling first edition plant physiology text of the 1990's! Now, we're building on the success of prior editions to provide an even more effective fourth edition. Plant Physiology has been praised for its excellent balance of traditional and modern topics, presented in a straightforward style, without overwhelming undergraduates with excessive detail. Its focus is on the ideas and experimental approaches in plant physiology. This is a one-semester course. It assumes that the student has had introductory biology or botany as a pre-requisite. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
This book has a lot of really great information. I am keeping it even though the class is over. The only thing that I would improve would be the figures. The sketches (not the photos) are done in kind of bland colors (faded out blues, greens, and grays). There is not very much contrast between the colors, which can make it difficult to distinguish between different portions of the figures when trying to mentally visualize them. (Probably only important if you are a visual person that really likes charts, graphs, and schematics.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently written & easy to understand
For a simple explanation of some very complex topics, I have found William Hopkins' text much more useful than the Taiz.Taiz was assigned for my class, but I have turned to the Hopkins, which was in the university library. With Hopkins, each sentence flows into the next and it is much easier to follow. Also, Hopkins is more up to date when mentioning current research. I wish I had bought the Hopkins...

I haven't come across so many typos to be disturbed by them. It is strange that the Hopkins' text was not edited for the typos, while Taiz's was not edited for readability...

2-0 out of 5 stars cheaply done - numerous errors compromise its usefulness - go with Taiz & Zeiger
I cannot recommend this textbook. Its basic premise is misguided. It seems to be aiming squarely between the level of presentation in a basic botany course and a true plant physiology course. This is not an advisable half-step -- it winds up being nothing more than a protracted review of basic botany, not the opening up of a new field of study.

Its flawed premise aside, the usefulness of this book on any level is compromised by its errors. Factual errors abound -- these aren't just matters of scientific dispute, they're flat-out errors in fact. For example, the overview of the C4 syndrome consistently shows that they phosphorylation of pyruvate to PEP produces ATP, when in fact it consumes ATP. (Furthermore, it insists that 2 ATP are involved, which is supported neither by the stoichiometry nor other sources I consulted.) The stromal hexose-P pool in the diagram for the PCR (Calvin) cycle is misplaced. The table showing the stoichiometry for the same cycle is an unhelpful oversimplification -- showing only the Rubisco and carbon dioxide and ignoring the inputs and outputs of water, phosphates, electron acceptors, and hydronium ion. The diagram for the citric acid cycle does not reflect the inputs of water, which is not only confusing, it is also misleading about the basic requirements for the physiological process of respiration. The diagram for a stoma and guard cells is inadequately labeled when viewed alongside the text, and detailed examples of the less well-known graminoid stomata are absent.

The function of enzymes is all-important in this subject, and this book only mentions them in the text proper, never including them in the diagrams and tables. For example, if took a dedicated search to find the fleeting mention in the text of the important role of malic enzyme in C4 and CAM photosynthesis. In order to get through this book, I had to cross-reference continuously with Taiz and Zeiger's better book on Plant Physiology, and the book on basic botany by Raven, Evert, and Eichhorn.

Taiz and Zeiger do a far better job all around. Enzymes are consistently presented -- right alongside the reactions -- in tables summarizing physiological processes. For most processes, the Lewis diagrams of the chemicals involved are usually presented -- this is a form of illustration that can help in understanding the processes, serve as a gentle prod in recalling one's organic chemistry. So even if the level of instruction doesn't require memorizing formulas or structures, these diagrams help in learning the material. If you are even a mildly inquisitive reader you're going to be continuously puzzled by the Hopkins book, unless you have other sources to consult.

The book is 100 pages shorter and 10 bucks more expensive than Taiz and Zeiger. T&Z are now in its third edition and using full-color, whereas Hopkins is only 2-color. Furthermore, T&Z have a nice web site, and this book has no ancillary material available. I read that their editor for the ancillar materials bagged out at the last minute, so the publishers were obviously cheapskates and didn't see to it that the job got done.

Taiz and Zeiger, however, are between editions -- the 4th edition is due out in June 2006. So you may want to hold off and get that. The 3rd edition of T&Z can be had for about $50, and the 2nd edition of 1998 (2 color) for $25. The 2nd edition is great, but the many advances made since 1998 are obviously not reflected.

1-0 out of 5 stars a bad textbook to learn plant phys
This is an introductory book, so I do not expect it to go in-depth in each area. There are many typos in this book though, like a lot of page numbers in the index are not correct. Also, the book goes in an odd order, and a lot of things explained later in the book wouldv'e made it easier to understand some of the earlier things easier. a lot of newer concepts are left out too, or vaguely mentioned, like electric currents in plants. My professor often has to use graphs and charts from other books because the ones from the book are too complicated or hard to understand, such as the Z-scheme, the Q cycle, and the PCR cycle to name a few. I would not recommend this book as an introductory textbook.

Product Description
Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants is a major contribution to the plant sciences literature, superbly edited by three distinguished scientists, Bob B. Buchanan, Wilhelm Gruissem, and Russell L. Jones, with contributions from more than 50 world-renowned scientists. With over 1,400 pages, 1,100 full-colour original drawings and 500 photographs this work qualifies, in the words of the Science reviewer, as:

"an essential reference for practicing plant biologists and for the increasing number of scientists from other disciplines who are entering the field of plant biology. To exploit fully the wealth of new information provided by the genome projects and to integrate the metabolic, regulatory, and signal transduction pathways of complex organisms, biologists will require a solid command of biochemistry and physiology. For this reason, the publication of Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants could not have come at a more opportune and auspicious time."

This book is meticulously organised and richly illustrated, useful both for teaching and for reference. The multi-authored work provides a contemporary view of its subject, including molecular biology, cell biology, and plant physiology, integrated around the themes of:

  • compartmentation
  • cell reproduction
  • energetics
  • metabolism
  • development
Read the words of the reviewer in CELL:

"The great strength of this book is that it has integrated its three major components (molecular biology, cell biology, and plant biochemistry) in each of the 24 chapters, resulting in a comprehensive analysis of a multitude of specific topics."

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry of plants & more...
This is another book you should find from a bookshelf of a sophisticated plant biologist ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, bad binding
The book is great, one of the best to learn everything about plant biology. Good explanations and pictures. Binding could be better, hardcover shouldn't be that expensive.... Losing some pages aleady after a few weeks.

2-0 out of 5 stars low value
I borrowed this book from a library during graduate school and found it to be very helpful in reviewing plant biochemistry. It is well written and has a fair amount of detail. The illustrations were well done and helpful. In spite of all the book has going for it however, it is outrageously expensive. In fairness, it is a fat book at nearly 1400 pages.Nevertheless the content does not justify the extremely high price tag, and I am disappointed that the publishers expect students to cough up this amount of money for a single text.

4-0 out of 5 stars love it
This book has the basis of Molecular and cell Biology that make you well armed. It has great pictures too. The biochemistry also is awesome, you'll find all the pathways you want. I even not gonna sell it after i graduate. I prefer keep it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biol. book out there
I am a PhD candidate in Plant Sciences and I work with both applied and basic researchers who work on all aspects of plant biology/agriculture etc.Everyone I work with and myself included feel that this is the best single plant biology text. It is a few years old now so some of the mol. biology will be outdated, and a couple of examples have since been proven to be different than described in the book, but this is minor. This is for the adv. undergrad or graduate student and if you are a graduate student in plant biology you should have this book-it is very expensive, but nearly every post-doc/grad student I know has a copy. Get the hardcover it will hold up better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for practical statistics in crop science!
I do okay with statistics, but they have never been my strength.I like this book, because it discusses some of the nuts and bolts of basic statistical analysis for crop science, as well as supplying the formulas for the statistical parameters.I would recommend this book for graduate students or researchers looking for a useful description of common experimental designs, statistical tests such as regression analysis, anova, and basic analysis of covariance. As with any statistics textbook meant for general readership, it will be a little above the capabilities of someone without any background in statistics and a little inadequate for those who are heavily invested in detailed statistical analysis, but I think it covers a nice middle ground in the literature. It would be nice if the next edition had an appendix of the basic formulas that are used commonly in the book so that there would be a more ready reference. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Guide
This guide book has been written for "tourists, students and urban-dwelling Costa Ricans" (according to the Preface). It is supurbly well-organized into sections that this audience can identify with.E. g. sections on tall trees, shrubs and small trees, two sections onvines, one on grasses, etc. The sections on trees are organized by color of the flowers, which greatly facilitates use of the book.I am one of the urban-dwelling Costa Ricans, but with a strong interest in re-forestation and rehabilitation of pastures and wet-lands in the Central Valley. While the book is not intended to be complete, it is very comprehensive and a most useful addition to any collection.A "must have" for anyone with an interest in the plants of costa Rica. ... Product Description
This is the 5th edition of a well-established book Principles of Plant Nutrition which was first published in 1978. The same format is maintained as in previous editions with the primary aim of the authors to consider major processes in soils and plants that are of relevance to plant nutrition. This new edition gives an up-to-date account of the scientific advances of the subject by making reference to about 2000 publications. An outstanding feature of the book, which distinguishes it from others, is its wide approach encompassing not only basic nutrition and physiology, but also practical aspects of plant nutrition involving fertilizer usage and crop production of direct importance to human nutrition. Recognizing the international readership of the book, the authors, as in previous editions, have attempted to write in a clear concise style of English for the benefit of the many readers for whom English is not their mother tongue. The book will be of use to undergraduates and postgraduates in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry and Ecology as well as those researching in Plant Nutrition. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
Physiology and Behaviour of Plants looks at plants and how they sense and respond to their environment. It takes the traditional plant physiology book into a new dimension by demonstrating how the biochemical observations underlie the behaviour of the plant. In many ways the book parallels courses studied at university on animal physiology and behaviour. The plant has to meet the same challenges as an animal to survive, but overcomes these challenges in very different ways. Students learn to think of plants not only as dynamic organisms, but aggressive, territorial organisms capable of long-range communication.

    Hallmark features include:

    • Based on a successful course that the author has run for several years at Sussex University, UK
    • Relates plant biochemistry to plant function
    • Printed in four colour throughout
    • Includes a wealth of illustrations and photographs that engages the reader’s attention and reinforce key concepts explored within the text
    • Presents material in a modern ‘topic’ based approach, with many relevant and exciting examples to inspire the student
    • An accompanying web site will include teaching supplements

This innovative textbook is the ultimate resource for all students in biology, horticulture, forestry and agriculture.

    Editorial Review

    Product Description

The growth, reproduction and geographical distribution of plants are profoundly influenced by their physiological ecology: the interaction with the surrounding physical, chemical, and biological environments. This renowned textbook is notable in emphasizing that the mechanisms underlying plant physiological ecology can be found at the levels of biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, and whole-plant physiology. At the same time, the integrative power of physiological ecology is well-suited to assess the costs, benefits, and consequences of modifying plants for human needs, and to evaluate the role of plants in ecosystems.

This new edition of Plant Physiological Ecology features updated material, as well as full color images throughout. Boxed entries provide extended discussions of selected issues, and a glossary and numerous references to the primary and review literature are included.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
This book does have a lot of good info. However, some of the figures come directly from scientific articles and their legends can be difficult to follow. There is also information presented on certain topics that is not yet fully accepted in the scientific community. There are also a few topics that are presented in a confusing manner, which make them hard to follow unless you reread them. The copy that I got is made with high quality sturdy paper, so it should last for a really long time. Overall it is a decent book but I think that it could have been organized in a format that was easier to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars More About The Molecular Biophysics And Biochemistry Of Photosynthesis
    "About the Authors
Hans Lambers is in the Department of Plant Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Utrecht University in The Netherlands and in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Western Australia.

    F. Stuart Chapin is Professor of Ecology at the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska.

Thijs L. Pons is in the Department of Plant Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Utrecht University."
[from the book of the back cover]

".....The book starts, appropriately, with the capture of carbon from the atmosphere.
Photosynthesis is obviously the basis of life on earth, and some of the most brilliant scientists have made it their life's work.
As a result, we know MORE ABOUT THE MOLECULAR BIOPHYSICS AND BIOCHEMISTRY OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS than we do about any other plant process....."
[from the book of the foreword by David T. Clarkson, IACR-Long Ashton Research Station, University of Bristol, April 1997]

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
I use this book as a starting point on specific topics in plant physiology & ecophysiology from the plant cell to plant global communities. Indeed, it is not an intro course in plant physiology and very broad but I would recommend this book for graduate students, it is helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars A complex book - not for the beginner
This book covers a lot of ground, beginning with photosynthesis, plant-water relations, and plant energy balances before discussing ecological aspects of plant physiology. While it follows a logical progression from the cell to the ecosystem scale, the book is very difficult to read. The authors try to cover too much material in the book, omitting basic material in order to broaden the focus of the book. Therefore, it is definitely not for those who are looking for a basic book in either plant physiology or plant ecology. As a textbook, it is difficult for undergraduate students to understand, and seems to be geared towards graduate students and those already familiar with the field. ...
