5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biology Text Everrrrrrr
This is the best plant biology text (and one of the best texts, period) I have ever come across. Not that I am a connoisseur of biology textbooks, or anything, but over the years, I've had to read enough of textbooks to know a good one when I see it. It is written in clear and engaging style, easily read and understood.

Teachers, professors: be kind to your plant biology students, and use this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff all around
It was great service and the book was in even greater condition. Its been awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the newest editions
The newest edition skips out on the chapters on ecology. This edition has it all. However new research on photosynthesis is obviously not included in this edition. Remember that you can look at much of the newest edition of this book as a preview in Google books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biology of Plants
It took a little longer than I would have preferred to be mailed to me. But what can you say when delivery is FREE. Some of the pages seemed to have some kind of yellow solution spilt on them and all over the side of the book. It was dry by the time it got to me and I had no time to send it back since it came two weeks after me class had already started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Price/Buy
The three book deal (textbook, lab book, and photography reference book) all new- all less than $200.
Great buy. Would do it again in a heartbeat. ... Read more

Well written - a very clear and good account of plant biology and the various concepts involved.Very good illustrations.I'm pleased to say that the chemistry aspect of plant biology is not as overwhelming (or as heavily emphasized) as it can be in some books, that are of a comparable educational level. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants is a major contribution to the plant sciences literature, superbly edited by three distinguished scientists, Bob B. Buchanan, Wilhelm Gruissem, and Russell L. Jones, with contributions from more than 50 world-renowned scientists. With over 1,400 pages, 1,100 full-colour original drawings and 500 photographs this work qualifies, in the words of the Science reviewer, as:

"an essential reference for practicing plant biologists and for the increasing number of scientists from other disciplines who are entering the field of plant biology. To exploit fully the wealth of new information provided by the genome projects and to integrate the metabolic, regulatory, and signal transduction pathways of complex organisms, biologists will require a solid command of biochemistry and physiology. For this reason, the publication of Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants could not have come at a more opportune and auspicious time."

This book is meticulously organised and richly illustrated, useful both for teaching and for reference. The multi-authored work provides a contemporary view of its subject, including molecular biology, cell biology, and plant physiology, integrated around the themes of:

  • compartmentation
  • cell reproduction
  • energetics
  • metabolism
  • development
Read the words of the reviewer in CELL:

"The great strength of this book is that it has integrated its three major components (molecular biology, cell biology, and plant biochemistry) in each of the 24 chapters, resulting in a comprehensive analysis of a multitude of specific topics."

Who should buy this spectacular new text?

  • Plant biologists and scientists in related fields
  • Professors in departments of plant biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, and related fields
  • Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students of plant biology
  • Researchers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agribusiness industries

A CD-ROM of all illustrative matter in the book is available separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry of plants & more...
This is another book you should find from a bookshelf of a sophisticated plant biologist ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, bad binding
The book is great, one of the best to learn everything about plant biology. Good explanations and pictures. Binding could be better, hardcover shouldn't be that expensive.... Losing some pages aleady after a few weeks.

2-0 out of 5 stars low value
I borrowed this book from a library during graduate school and found it to be very helpful in reviewing plant biochemistry. It is well written and has a fair amount of detail. The illustrations were well done and helpful. In spite of all the book has going for it however, it is outrageously expensive. In fairness, it is a fat book at nearly 1400 pages.Nevertheless the content does not justify the extremely high price tag, and I am disappointed that the publishers expect students to cough up this amount of money for a single text.

4-0 out of 5 stars love it
This book has the basis of Molecular and cell Biology that make you well armed. It has great pictures too. The biochemistry also is awesome, you'll find all the pathways you want. I even not gonna sell it after i graduate. I prefer keep it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biol. book out there
I am a PhD candidate in Plant Sciences and I work with both applied and basic researchers who work on all aspects of plant biology/agriculture etc.Everyone I work with and myself included feel that this is the best single plant biology text. It is a few years old now so some of the mol. biology will be outdated, and a couple of examples have since been proven to be different than described in the book, but this is minor. This is for the adv. undergrad or graduate student and if you are a graduate student in plant biology you should have this book-it is very expensive, but nearly every post-doc/grad student I know has a copy. Get the hardcover it will hold up better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fantasic seller
I ordered this book late for my class and I needed it asap. I was contacted by the seller immediately and was informed that we lived in the same city. So the next day she delivered the book to me in hand before it would have arrived in the mail. A pleasure to do business with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Introductory Plant Biology
Some damage to pages but overall is okay. No highlighter marks, writing, or missing pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Superficial but wide-ranging ; not for those wanting deep insight
This beautifully produced book, with many color diagrams, falls victim to the "over-illustration plus superficial and over-simplified descriptions" syndrome typical of many of today's textbooks.Too often, the large colour illustrations and diagrams in this book do not really explain things clearly. Moreover, they relate poorly to the main text on the adjoining page. Further, this book's explanations of key Plant Science concepts sometimes lack clarity, and lack sufficient detail, so the reader cannot achieve a proper structured understanding. What we get, instead, in this 11th edition, is breadth of coverage and an attempt to get us "excited" about plant science. In particular, the descriptions of plant reproduction, seed development, and flower structure & development, are short and trivial. While I did enjoy the author's numerous personal asides, and the "human" and entertaining tone of this text, the structure of this book is weak in some places, e.g. plant flowering, reproduction, and seed development is placed into about four different places in the book!
I confess to being somewhat disappointed with this book....it probably started clearly in its earlier editions, but it now needs a good technical editor

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple read, informative
This book is written in a very clear style so that students of all ages can understand it. I used this book for a college level plant biology class, but I could see people using it as early as middle school for an introduction to botany. It may not be worth the price if you're just buying the book for leisure reading, but remember that you're paying for a textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This book was extremely useful in my plant science class. The prof. taught from it and the images inside are great.Everything is well laid out and I like the chapter summaries and information. This book was expensive, but for me it was worth it!

4-0 out of 5 stars ignore that bitter student
I too used this book for my introductory botany class and actually worked for Tom Rost several years later (as my both interest and understanding of the subject grew, neither were affected in anyway but a posistive one from the use of this text).I used an older version which included a rudimentary section on fungi (I'm not sure if this edition does) as the book was written to mirror the original content of course taught a UCD but other than that it has just what you'd want to know to get you feet wet in botany.I have this book in paper back - the binding is cracking and I have officallly had pages fall out but I still pull this book out occasionally for use.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a great visual help to botany
I bought this book as a additional resource to a basic plant science course that I was taking. It has great pictures, and explanations on the basic proceses in plants. This is not a book that a begining self taught person could learn from easily. This is a textbook, not a home gardener's type book. The only drawback is the binding. All the books that I have seen have been falling apart.I would recommend the spiral bound edition or just live with the binding

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is junk
I'm a UC Davis student who took the plant biology course that uses this book. The professor doesn't even follow the book because it's so bad. It's unorganized, confusing, and useless for my class. Even some of the illustrations in the book are wrong. Don't buy this book if you just plan to learn plant biology. If you have to buy this book because course requirement, good luck ... Read more

    Product Description

While ornamental plants are produced mainly for their aesthetic value, the propagation and improvement of quality attributes such as leaf types, flower colour and fragrance, longevity and form, plant shape and architecture, and the creation of novel variation are important economic goals for the expanding ornamental industry. In Protocols for In Vitro Propagation of Ornamental Plants, leading researchers in the field compile step-wise protocols for rapid plant multiplication and in vitro storage of major commercially viable ornamental plants. Divided into two sections, Section A contains chapters mainly on micropropagation of cut and pot flowers with detailed protocols involving in vitro culture-explants, medium preparation, detailed medium table, shoot initiation and proliferation, root induction, in vitro plant hardening, and field transfer, and Section B delves into reviews on topics such as in vitro production of sweet peas, the status of transgenics in ornamental plants, in vitro conservation, the status of floriculture in Europe, azalea phylogeny, and thin cell layers. As part of the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials, step-by-step laboratory protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.

Comprehensive and clear, Protocols for In Vitro Propagation of Ornamental Plants presents key techniques that will be of great use to floriculturists, researchers, commercial companies, biotechnologists, and students dealing with ornamental plants.

    Product Description
In the Dictionary of Plant Genetics and Molecular Biology, more than 3,500 technical terms from the fields of plant genetics and molecular biology are defined for students, teachers, and researchers in universities, institutes, and agricultural research stations. An excellent educational tool that will save you time and effort, this dictionary brings together into a single source the meaning and origin of terms from the fields of classical genetics, molecular genetics, mutagenesis, population genetics, statistics, plant biotechnology, evolutionary genetics, plant breeding, and plant biotechnology.

Finding and understanding the precise meaning of many terms in genetics is crucial to understanding the foundation of the subject matter. For reasons of space, the glossaries provided at the end of most textbooks are highly inadequate. There is, then, dire need for a dictionary of terms in a single volume. You?ll appreciate the helpful approaches and features of Dictionary of Plant Genetics and Molecular Biology, including:

    • no terms that are of limited use, very general, or self-explanatory
    • cross references for effective access to the materials and economy of space
    • alternate names of terms, denoted with “Also referred to as . . .” or “Also known as . . .”
    • multiple definitions for terms defined by different authors or for terms with different meanings in different contexts
    • authors who coined, described, or contributed toward further understanding of a term are listed and respective publications are included in the Bibliography

At last, there is compiled in a single volume the technical terms you need to know in order to understand plant genetics and molecular biology. As your knowledge grows, you?ll uncover even more terms that you need to understand. You?ll find yourself turning to this handy guide time and time again for help on all levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evolutionary history of plants
The magisterial new book by Taylor, Taylor, and Krings is definitely the best treatment on the evolutionary history of plants (and some related taxa) in the marketplace. It is not a mere update of the Taylors' well-known earlier textbook but a completely new review of this subject. The taxonomic coverage is comprehensive, and the book is lavishly illustrated. An additional positive attribute is that the authors recognize and celebrate historical contributions in the field - something all too uncommon nowadays. I was just amazed that it was published by Academic Press - not a name generally associated with affordable books - at a mere $120.00 (actually less on Amazon and major booksellers). This is a "must buy" for anyone seriously interested in the history of life on Earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stratigraphic Chart Missing
The geologic time periods chart referred to in the Preface is not found on the inside front and back covers
of the book I got, it can easily be downloaded and printed though from International Commission on
    Stratigraphy website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!
I don't normally associate Academic Press with bargan prices, but this incredible volume is one. It's awsomely comprehensive, very well organized, beautifully illustrated with many color images, and painfully up to date. I could go on and on listing its virtues. The many photos of historically important paleobotanists, past and present, and the exhaustive list of references are just two. Congratulations and thanks to the Taylors and Krings and to Academic Press for this very useful and beautifully produced book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is It!
STOP whatever you are doing and buy this book! I have the first edition and rated it as the best volume on fossil plants. Now the second edition is here and it is dramatically better! Why is it better? Well first of all there are over 2,000 illustrations. Secondly most of the illustrations are in color! Third, the book has larger pages and more of them allowing for better explanations and greatly expanded coverage.
This is THE finest book on fossil plants EVER!

The drawbacks are few; there is the weight of the book which precludes it being read in bed, and the old illustration on page 1022 of a horseshoe crab, supposedly hiding on a lycopod branch indicating land activity, has been disproved several times by Anderson and others. Finally there is the occasional problem of lack of locality information on many of the photos. I would like to know where the specimens were found, at least country of origin. These are trivial compared to the strengths of the book.

If you have any interest in paleobotany, this book is a must. The price is low when you consider it is the best of its kind. This book needs to be part of any college level library where geology is taught.

Now, go to the top of the page, find the "order button", click on it and await the best book on paleobotany ever. You will be impressed!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superlative encyclopedic treatise on paleobotany.
Just received my copy today and I couldn't be more pleased. The book construction and materials are absolutely superb. Archival library binding and premium gloss paper with over 2100 illustrations and exquisite photography convey an almost lifelike appearance throughout. The book is actually 1230 pp. with appendix, glossary, references and index.

This is truly a Magnum Opus of paleobotany, sure to please the most meticulous academicians and amateurs alike. This work will certainly have a broad appeal to botanists beyond those with a purely paleontological bent. Although one caveat for the neophyte; this is not an easy slog. At a minimum a cursory knowledge of botany and paleontology is required lest the reader become ensnared in the plethora of scientific parlance and doctrine.

A magnificent tome, easily one of the best paleobotany references ever produced. ... Read more

    Product Description
Newly updated, Botany: An Introduction to Plant Biology, Fourth Edition provides an current, thorough overview of the fundamentals of botany. The topics and chapters are organized in a sequence that is easy to follow, beginning with the most familiar (structure) and proceeding to the less familiar (metabolism) then finishing with those topics that are probably the least familiar to most beginning students (genetics, evolution, the diversity of organisms, and ecology). The diversity and systematics are organized on a cladistics basis. An emphasis on natural selection throughout the book allows the instructor to incorporate analysis of diversity of structures and metabolisms into every subject.Believing that a knowledge of evolution by natural selection is essential for understanding biological structure and processes, the author works throughout the text to convey how powerful a concept natural selection is. Beginning with Chapter 1, selective advantage and fitness are referred to or discussed in every chapter and on almost every page. Natural selection is covered in detail in Chapter 17 after students have become rather sophisticated in their knowledge of plants and botanical phenomena. ... Read more

Great buy. Would do it again in a heartbeat. ... Read more

    Product Description

The past decade has seen the emergence of plants as a viable alternative to the current production systems for therapeutic proteins. In Recombinant Proteins from Plants, expert researchers explore plants and their potential for the production of increasingly safe, high quality and biologically active complex recombinant pharmaceutical proteins. Chapters present several production platforms, focusing on the largest and most important group of biotechnological products in clinical trials: antibodies and their derived fragments with acknowledged potential for immunotherapy in humans. Due to the shortage of step by step protocols that can be used easily by beginners, this volume aims to fill the void with several chapters of detailed instructions for using the main plant expression systems. Composed in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, each chapter contains a brief introduction, step-by-step methods, a list of necessary materials, and a Notes section which shares tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.

Comprehensive and cutting-edge, Recombinant Proteins from Plants serves as an ideal guide for those new and seasoned plant scientists, pharmaceutical scientists, and molecular and cellular biologists interested in molecular pharming.

    Product Description

Plant Biology is a new textbook written for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. It is an account of modern plant science, reflecting recent advances in genetics and genomics and the excitement they have created. The book begins with a review of what is known about the origins of modern-day plants. Next, the special features of plant genomes and genetics are explored. Subsequent chapters provide information on our current understanding of plant cell biology, plant metabolism, and plant developmental biology, with the remaining three chapters outlining the interactions of plants with their environments. The final chapter discusses the relationship of plants with humans: domestication, agriculture and crop breeding. Plant Biology contains over 1,000 full color illustrations, and each chapter begins with Learning Objectives and concludes with a Summary.
