4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for MT students
The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is because it isn't quite as comprehensive or useful as two other related texts from the same publisher (Diagnostic Bacteriology A Study Guide, and Medical Parasitology A Self-Instructional Text). The format is fairly similar two the other two as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate pratical reference to teach yourself mycology
This is a well organized and written reference that makes sense of thearcane world of fungal names and nomenclature. I am a veterinarydermatology resident and from one careful reading of this book I was ableidentify the most common pathogenic and contaminant fungi. I recommend thisbook to the any health professional or student who needs to learn and moreimportant understand and identify medically relevant fungal organisms. Iwish all of my textbooks were this clear. If I had to choose one referencefor mycology, this would be it. Bravo!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A most in any Mycology Library
I studied Mycology for some time and I can say this is a most in any library. It provides an excelent background, and with modern complementations it becomes a great source of knowledge...

3-0 out of 5 stars classic text but no bargain
This is an excellent introduction to the fungi, however the cost is extremely prohibitive. The coverage is good, and its strong points are in morphological description and taxonomy. It is less impressive in molecular aspects of mycology.Given the high price of this volume, I highly recommend checking it out from a library to see if it meets your needs and expectations before deciding to purchase. And keep in mind that there are more affordably priced alternative pathways to introduce you to the fungi, such as The Fifth Kingdom by Kendrick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference text for fungi
The text is a good introduction to fungi with several excellent black and white pictures and illustrations. The text also contains an extensive glossary of mycological terms. However, as other reviewers have indicated, the text appears to be written for people with at least a general biology background. As a microbiologist, I find this book to be a perfect reference for fungi.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic introduction with a focus on plant pathology.
Last month I began browsing my 1962 edition of Introductory Mycology.Loand behold I read through the whole book over a weekend. This book was ourbible for the Mycology 100 course in grad school.I was noticing how goodthe narrative and drawings were in this classic. The book is not a glitzytome so common in textbooks today. Each class of fungi is dealt withseparately and there are extensive references at the end of each chapter.Of course because of the date of my edition some of the references aredated. However, the basic science here is solid and presented in apedagogical manner. The chapter on class Basidiomycetes deserves specialmention. The basidium development narrative is just superb. If you have aninterest in fungi and want to delve deeper into this important living groupthen get this book.It will serve you well for years to come just as ithas done for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars More intermediate than introductory Micology
This textbook is designed and geared towards individuals with already a basic understanding of fungi. Unlike the title, one should be acquinted with basic terminology so that the reading is more instructive and helpful.Once a basic understanding is established, this book can be a great aidwhen exploring the world of fungi either scientifically or for leisurepurposes only. The figures are very useful and the book is well organizedand easy to follow. ... Product Description

Anemones and fish, ants and acacia trees, fungus and trees, buffaloes and oxpeckers--each of these unlikely duos is an inimitable partnership in which the species’ coexistence is mutually beneficial. More specifically, they represent examples of defensive mutualism, when one species receives protection against predators or parasites in exchange for offering shelter or food to its partner species.

Explores the Diverse Range of Defensive Mutualisms Involving Microbial Symbionts

The past 20 years, since this phenomenon first began receiving attention, have been marked by a deluge of research in a variety of organism kingdoms and much has been discovered about this intriguing behavior. Defensive Mutualism in Microbial Symbiosis includes basic ecological and biological information on defensive mutualisms, explores how they function, and evaluates how they have evolved. It also looks at the implications of symbiosis defensive compounds as a new frontier in bioexploration for drug and natural product discovery--the first book to explore this possibility.

Chapters Written by Field Authorities

The book expands the concept of defensive mutualisms to evaluate defense against environmental abiotic and biotic stresses. Addressing the topic of defensive mutualisms in microbial symbiosis across this wide spectrum, it includes chapters on defensive mutualistic associations involving multiple kingdoms of organisms in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems--plant, animal, fungi, bacteria, and protozoans.

Defensive Mutualism in Microbial Symbiosis unifies scattered findings into a single compendium, providing a valuable reference for field researchers and those in academia to assimilate and acquire a knowledgeable perspective on defensive mutualism, particularly those involving microbial partners.

Product Description
Several excellent books have been published that address one or more aspects of the diverse field of industrial mycology, but none of them cover the entire process of fungal bioactive metabolites discovery. Until now. The Handbook of Industrial Mycology provides, in one volume, an overview of recent developments in industrial mycology with emphasis on the discovery of bioactive metabolites and, most importantly, their underlying biology and genetics. Two additional features distinguish this book from other books in the field: 1) most chapters are prepared using experimental data to illustrate theories and 2) the authors provide methodologies and experimental protocols in their chapters.

Presenting a comprehensive overview of recent advances, the book provides a framework of basic methods, tools, and organizational principles for channeling fungal germplasm into the academic, pharmaceutical, and enzyme discovery laboratories. It covers the complex range of processes involved in the discovery, characterization, and profiling of bioactive fungal metabolites. The book includes examples of several recently marketed fungal metabolites and explores the impact of fungi on applications in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, agricultural, and agrochemical industries. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to biology of fungi
Modern Mycology , 3rd ed by J.W. Deacon, is a useful introduction to the fungi for advanced undergraduates and grad students in botany, biology or horticulture; a lay person would have to have an unusually good background in biology to get much from the book. A very brief survey of modern classification is given to the level of division, with the rest of the text focusing on various aspects of the biology of the fungi.Various biochemical aspects of fungi are particularly well covered and there are interesting treatments of decomposer communities, mycorrhizae and fungi as pathogens. The book is copiously illustrated with clear line drawings and black and white photos and there are 23 beautiful color plates.I would like more systematic information, but I understand that this is the area of mycology most in flux. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is the first mycology book I've come across that actually has a chapter on MYCOTOXINS and HUMAN DISEASES! Mycotoxins are the missing link between the common illnesses that farmers encounter every day and our common, chronic, human diseases (such as heart disease, infertility, and cancer). Just killing the fungus is not good enough to establish good health. Rather, reducing ones exposure to mycotoxins is equally as important. This one chapter makes the rest of the book well worth it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Weaknesses
Clinical Mycology is on balance weak in many areas, but most notably diagnosing trauma related opportunistic fungal bone infections. Many references are made to "uncommon" and "unusual" cases, but little mention is given to diagnostic methodolgy. See Clinical Mycology Online--"Opportunistic Fungal Infections" Reference--"Aspergillus seldom isolated from blood, urine, CSF." Author doesn't tell you that C.T. scans are an unreliable tool for diagnosing some fungal infections. See A.M. Sugar & C. A. Lyman "A Practical Guide To Medically Important Fungi And The Diseases They Cause" P.69 This is minimum information that you will not find in this book. A better alternative are two books, one by Fisher/Cook "Fundamentals of Diagnostic Mycology" and the other by Sugar/Lyman. Of course, there are also many strong articles worth reading in this book, and for that reason it is worth bookshelf space-- ... Read more

This is the proceeding of the 5th International Workshop on Food Mycology sponsored by the International Commission on Food Mycology. The workshop took place October 16-18, 2003 in Samso, Denmark.

The Fifth Workshop was attended by some 35 participants, drawn from among food mycology and related disciplines around the world. The workshop was highly successful, with papers devoted to media and methods development in food mycology, as is usual with these workshops. Particular emphasis was placed on the fungi which produce mycotoxins, especially their ecology, and through ecology, potential control measures. Sessions were also devoted to yeasts and the inactivation of fungal spores by the use of heat and high pressure. Nearly 40 scientific papers were presented over three days of the workshop, and these papers are the major contributions in these Proceedings.
