4-0 out of 5 stars Good for gemology students
This is a great book for gemology students who want a deeper understanding of optical properties such as interference figures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good standard reference material
A well written and illustrated textbook on the subject matter. It is exactly what it wants to be: An introduction. And it is a good one. Wide and detailed enough to give the beginner a good handle of "what optical mineralogy is all about" without going into too much detail of purely academic issues. Good balance of theory and examples.
The illustrations are plenty, rich and very instructive. However, minor improvements may be possible by replacing some of the black&white illustrations with updated colour graphics, in particular the microphotographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mineralogy Book
Another fine, informative book that is truly helpful in gemology, as well as the intended geology studies.
Well worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Handy Dandy Guide
This is a definate must have for all you Geologists out there. No matter what year of school you are in or even if you are no longer in school, but need a bit of reference now and again, this is the book to have. Nesse does an excellent job of clearly explaining and illustrating the optical properties of minerals. He includes all of the essential bits of information that any geologist will need. I highly recommend this book as a great reference tool that any geologist or aspiring geologist should add to their collection of references.

Product Description
Introduction to Mineralogy consolidates much of the material now covered in traditional mineralogy and optical mineralogy courses and focuses on describing minerals within their geologic context. It presents the important traditional content of mineralogy including crystallography, chemical bonding, controls on mineral structure, mineral stability, and crystal growth to provide a foundation that enables students to understand the nature and occurence of materials. Physical, optical, and X-ray powder difraction techniques of mineral study are described in detail, and common chemical analytical methods are outlined as well. Detailed descriptions of over 100 common minerals are provided, and the geological context within which these minerals occur is emphasized. Appendices provide tables and diagrams to help students with mineral identification, using both physical and optical properties. Numerous line drawings, photographs, and photomicrographs help make complex concepts understandable. Introduction to Mineralogy not only provides specific knowledge about minerals but also helps students develop the intellectual tools essential for a solid, scientific education. This comprehensive text is useful for undergraduate students in a wide range of mineralogy courses. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Half way decent Min book
I will be short and to the point.I just took mineralogy this fall, and this book was pretty good. It's not a sit down and read type of textbook, however. It comes in handy during optical mineralogy with microscopes, and for learning terms. The information for each mineral is well documented with optical, chemical, physical, symmetry, and locations where they're found. One thing I would have liked was color pictures and even thin section images, but there are other books for that.Overall, it's very helpful for anyone he needs a good guide or is just starting in mineralogy.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This bookis useful for more than one subject. Optical mineralogy, petrology, mineralogy so it is a good buy. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get into or know more about mineralogy/optical mineralogy, and petrology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mineralogy Text That Is Easy to Read
My search for an appropriate introductory mineralogy text is over! Dexter Perkins has written a book that actually makes the complex and conceptual content of mineralogy accessible to sophomore students. (Well, it does take some effort; he is not a miracle-worker.) His explanations are clear, concise, and descriptive. I highly recommend this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mineralogy course material
When I took my first course in mineralogy it was Perkings' Mineralogy that was recommended as a study book. I am still using this in my mineralogy hobbies and studies. I have found book very useful in crystallography and hand specimen identification. I gave grade 4/5 to the book because of the lacking mineral specimen crystal morphology pictures which is very interesting in further development in classical crystallography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Identification Guide
As a user of this book as a student of Geology I can highly recommend it.There is no douth in my mind that this remains the best book made foridentification in optical mineralogy. In addition to containingdescriptions of optical properties for over 450 minerals, it has a easy touse system of tabels which crossreference and compare the opticalproperties of the minerals. This system is very well taliored and makesidentification, not a dream but a lot easier. The book also has a largesection on the theory of optical mineralogy and polarizing microscope.

2-0 out of 5 stars Desperately needs larger font and photos.
I am a geologist, but for heaven's sake, pics at least as good as a cheap field guide would be in order, especially for some of the more unusual minerals. Would also love to see some of the zillions of examples of granites that you can find at your average kitchen type granite center. The geology though is good, just a bit dry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor - don't buy this book
I think the Danas would be embarrassed if they lived to see their name on the cover of this book - probably the worst compendium of mineralogical data in the history of science. Here, inaccuracies and errors are the norm rather than exception, and the quality of print and paper are no match even to a circa-1900 missionary's Bible. Sloppy sources like this one do more harm than good by perpetuating errors and introducing new ones, so do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned $350 on something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Long-awaited reference needs work
As a professional geologist, I use this reference often but I have foundnumerous errors. An example is that the mineral Pentlandite, an importantore of nickel, is not listed in the index. A German website is compiling anerrata list on this book and it is many pages long of spelling, locality, formulae and indices errors. Other complaints are: The informationconcerning the economic use of the minerals is too sketchy and incomplete;and the page paper is too thin and fragile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, essential mineral species reference
I use the book almost daily while working on a large mineral collection. It is up to date and comprehensive with valuable references to localities. The book is fragile with thin pages so must be used with care. It should bepublished as a CD ROM.

3-0 out of 5 stars Is the publisher nuts?
I can't believe that John Wiley & Sons (the publisher) actually tries to sell this book as "compact".It's 1100 pages! The Peterson Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals is a much better "compact"guide. This thing should really be on CD-ROM. ... Read more

Product Description
INTRODUCTION - TO Optical Mineralogy and Petrography The Practical Methods of Identifying Minerals in Thin Section With the Microscope and The Principles Involved in The Classification of Rocks - PREFACE - IN THE preparation of this volume the writer has attempted to gather together and systematize in a manner accessible for ready reference those facts which are essential to a field geologist or to a mining engineer in an understanding of the fundamental principles involved in the classification and identification of rocks. In the field, a preliminary classification is usually made by macroscopic means. However, it is often necessary to make a more careful classification by a microscopic examination of a thin section of the minerals comprising the rock mass. To do this successfully requires a knowledge of the application of light to crystalline substances. This volume differs from most of the reference and text books relating to this subject in that it incorporates in one volume the elements of optical mineralogy and the elements of petrography. In Part One, eight general operations for the determination of unknown minerals in thin section are described, prefaced by a short summary of the principles of optics which apply to the transmission of polarized light through minerals. Descriptions of fiftyeight of the most common of the rock-making minerals are given, special attention being given to the criteria for the determination of these minerals in thin section. Their form, cleavage, twinning, color, refringence, bi refringence, extinction angles, pleochroism, absorption, optical character, inclusions, alterations, occurrences, uses, and differentiation from similar minerals, are all discussed whenever applicable. An elementary knowledge of crystallography and descriptive mineralogy is assumed. In Part Two, the principles of petrography are discussed briefly. Attention is given to the classification and description of the more important igneous rock types. Following Iddings, Winchell, and other American petrographers, the symbols X, Y, and Z, are here employed in referring to the axes of ether elasticity, instead of the German a, b, and c, used in many text and reference books. This is done to avoid confusion, especially in conversation or discussion, with the crystallographic axes. 2 The writer is indebted to Professor Frank R. Van Horn for suggestions. Among the reference and text books most frequently consulted the writer wishes to acknowledge Winchells Elements of Optical Mineralogy, Johannsens Manual of Petrographic Methods, Luquers Minerals in Rock Sections, Rogerss Study of Minerals, Findlays Igneous Rocks, Kemps Handbook of Rocks, Ries and Watsons Engineering Geology, and Farrells Practical Field Geology. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not in Kindle Dictionary Format
This dictionary is not in the Kindle Dictionary Format.Looking up words is, therefore, relatively slow and tedious and it can not be your default Kindle dictionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars good basic reference
Good dictionary but more specific definitions. For an earth scientist in the making, I would recommend the Oxford Dictionary of Earth Sciences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary of Geology & Mineralogy
The is a must for anyone reading geological work. Rarely are words not to be found and in those instances the words have provincial usage. Despite plain English being a powerful means of expression geologists have developed an incredible lexicon of words some of which are unnecessary. Like lawyers and molecular biologists, this is a mechanism for one-upsmanship. Really out of place.

As an informed and enthusiastic student of geology and mineralogy, I find the book an essential crutch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mineral Science (Manual of Mineralogy) 23rd
I like reading this Manual of Mineralogy (Mineral Science 23rd edition.) It is easy reading for a scientist. It has some color pages of minerals; but most of the book is black and white prints of minerals. There is a lot of interesting material to read in this book.I have had an earlier edition too which I don't have with me now; so I ordered this 23rd edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Confusing
As a geology college student, I found this book full of information but the presentation of that information was very confusing. I also found the lack of colored pictures annoying. When trying to learn different minerals color tends to help a little. Very short coverage of a few topics such as miller indices. I personally would love to find a better book then this.
