4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Item
The book is above expectation. It have a lot of exercices with solutions. It covers different areas of knowledge. It a good source to be used for practicing knowledge and speed also a reference resource during the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars marginally helpful
If you were expecting something akin to the breadth and depth of material found in the general FE review manual (which is excellent), or other discipline specific manuals by Lindeburg, the preparation manual for the industrial discipline specific test will leave you wanting.

The manual is short, and essentially a practice exam. You will need other study materials, such as the Handbook of Industrial Engineering, to augment your study to adequately prepare for the exam.

A suggestion for future editions would be a review of the subject material like you find in the general review manual.

Product Description

Winner of the 2010 IIE/Joint Publishers Book-of-the-Year Award. In light of increasing economic and international threats, military operations must be examined with a critical eye in terms of process design, management, improvement, and control. Although the Pentagon and militaries around the world have utilized industrial engineering (IE) concepts to achieve this goal for decades, there has been no single resource to bring together IE applications with a focus on improving military operations. Until now.

The Handbook of Military Industrial Engineering is the first compilation of the fundamental tools, principles, and modeling techniques of industrial engineering with specific and direct application to military systems. Globally respected IE experts provide proven strategies that can help any military organization effectively create, adapt, utilize, and deploy resources, tools, and technology.

Topics covered include:

  • Supply Chain Management and decision making
  • Lean Enterprise Concepts for military operations
  • Modeling and optimization
  • Economic planning for military systems
  • Contingency planning and logistics
  • Human factors and ergonomics
  • Information management and control

Civilian engineers working on systems analysis, project management, process design, and operations research will also find inspiration and useful ideas on how to effectively apply the concepts covered for non-military uses.

On the battlefield and in business, victory goes to those who utilize their resources most effectively, especially in times of operational crisis. The Handbook of Military Industrial Engineering is a complete reference that will serve as an invaluable resource for those looking to make the operational improvements needed to accomplish the mission at hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
You can learn E&M for the first time only once.I took my first course on E&M in the Physics department. We used the book by Purcell. It was intuitive, visual, engaging almost poetry. Then I took my next semester in the Electrical Engineering department. We used Hayt.It was mundane, pedestrian, just the facts madam. And yet I learned from it.Since then I've picked up half a dozen introductory E&M texts. But I go back to Purcell for understanding and Hayt for engineering help. But I've looked at those other books and I don't think any of them would have been any better. So that earns Hayt a solid 3 stars. All these books discuss skin effect, but only Hayt discusses the effect of skin depth on inductance. For that, it gets an extra star.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad selections
This book decides to highlight the most useless forms of common electromagnetic equations. It will lead you to solve problems in a cookie cutter fashion and never learn electromagnetism.

2-0 out of 5 stars About the worst book on the subject!!
I have more than 5 books on this subject. I am a self studier, I read a few books on each topic. I never found any useful information from this book. This book don't seemed to go into detail of each subject, just give the formulas. If you use it in school, good luck!! If you study on your own like me, get some other books like Cheng's.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible.
I'm an EE undergrad student and I have to struggle to use this book on a weekly basis. This book lacks sufficient examples, doesn't clearly derive the equations it uses, and worst of all uses TERRIBLE wording in explaining concepts, typically making them more complicated than they already are.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK! "Oh well I have to, for my class." No, you don't. Get the homework problems from a friend or Google Books. Then do yourself a favor and buy the book by Ida, that book is fantastic. It explains things clearly, telling you why certain methods are preferred, and it has examples that cover different parts of each concept.

Worst book ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
There are lot of books on undergraduate electromagnetics. This would bein my list. The books I have and recommend are
1) D.K Cheng
2) Hayt and Buck
3) Ulaby
4) Edminister - Schaum's outline electromagnetics.
5) Spiegel - Schaum's outline vector calculus.
6) You should use Finney and George - calculus along with these books.

The book you should avoid is one by Kraus!!.
If you want to master undergraduate electromagnetics, you should have the 6 books!. There are people who complain about (1), (2) and (3). This is because their mathematical background is not strong. So I recommend (4), (5) and (6) to be used along with (1), (2) and (3).
You simply cannot write books better than (1),(2) and (3).
Those who complain ahout this book, should increase their mathematical background. ... Read more

Product Description

Contemporary Engineering Economics, 5/e, is intended for undergraduate engineering students taking introductory engineering economics while appealing to the full range of engineering disciplines for which this course is often required: industrial, civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, aerospace, chemical, and manufacturing engineering, as well as engineering technology.

This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated while continuing to adopt a contemporary approach to the subject, and teaching, of engineering economics. This text aims not only to build a sound and comprehensive coverage of engineering economics, but also to address key educational challenges, such as student difficulty in developing the analytical skills required to make informed financial decisions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Textbook
This is a required textbook for a class I am taking. Most of the examples are helpful.A few could use a little more detail.Being a required book, I assume most folks would be buying this for the same reason, required, not an optional purchase. That makes it hard for me to recommend, (or not.)Not bad for the type of book it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Used the book on Engineering Economy and Advanced Engineering Economy courses. This book is a keeper.Excellent information that will be useful well into one's career.Good examples, well-structured.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strongly Recommended
This book provides a solid foundation for the practicing engineer involved with the econmic evaluation of engineering projects, an area which determines for the greater part, whether projects should be progressed or aborted. The principles are well defined and the examples are easy to follow, rightfully stimulating thinking and not substituting for it, since as we are well aware, engineering projects may vary in size, scope and complexity. I would recommend this book to any engineering student or practicing engineer. Consulting the work of other authors (eg Sullivan) would supplement understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. I gave the book a 4 star rating because of the errors within the examples provided. The principles however, are conveyed so effectively in the text that identification of these errors become easy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Engineering Economics
Not the best textbook I have read.Examples in the text not as clear as I would want it them to be in illustrating concepts.Examples could include more steps that are sometimes left out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but full of errors.
The topic(s) of this book are highly valuable, but the book itself is full of math errors.Be sure to check the website for revision information. It would be much more useful if the sample problems would have an answer key. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This not an update of the 4th edition
This 5th edition is not exactly for the same users of the 4th edition. While it clearly reads in the publisher note on the back cover that the scope of this book includes aerospace engineering, it DOES NOT ANYMORE. This 5th edition has unfairly deleted the Aeronautics and Astronautics chapters. Furthermore is has reduced tremendously the Automatic Control chapters into one useless basic control chapter.

I do not understand the new editor's view of this strategy, but I am glad I still have my 4th edition copy. I will surely return the 5th edition copy because it is useless for aerospace engineers compared to the 4th edition oneEshbach's Handbook of Engineering Fundamentals, 4th Edition. ... Read more

Product Description
Industry relies heavily on the combustion process. The already high demand for energy, primarily from combustion, is expected to continue to rapidly increase. Yet, the information is scattered and incomplete, with very little attention paid to the overall combustion system. Designed for practicing engineers, Heat Transfer in Industrial Combustion eclipses the extant literature with an emphasis on the aspects of heat transfer that directly apply to industry. From a practical point of view, the editor organizes relevant papers into a single, coherent resource. The book encompasses heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, including the little-covered subjects of the use of oxygen to enhance combustion and flame impingement. Maximizing applications and minimizing theory, it covers modes of heat transfer, computer modeling, heat transfer from flame impingement, from burners, low temperature, high temperature, and advanced applications, and more. The theoretical focus of most literature has created a clear need for a practical treatment of the heat transfer as it applies to industrial combustion systems. With detailed coverage and extensive references, Heat Transfer in Industrial Combustion fills this void.Features ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worthless to an average human being.
This book is absolutely worthless. I can't believe my university suckered me into buying this crap.
Chapter 1 is all about "living on your own."
They cover things like: doing your own laundry, eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and practicing good study habits.
Chapter 2 is all about "What is an Engineer?"
The "problems" at the end of chapter 2 that your instructor may or may not have you complete include meaningless tasks like writing three separate one-page reports and an engineer's experiences in college or writing a biography of a famous engineer. Hell, question 2.13 says "Write a one-page report describing the Einstein/Szilard refrigerator and how it was created."
WHY????
I HAVE ACTUAL WORK TO DO.
I DON'T WANT TO SIT HERE WRITING BS ABOUT "BRAIN FOODS" I CAN EAT TO IMPROVE MY ALREADY ADEQUATE STUDY HABITS.
FOOLS.
FOOLS.
FOOLS.

Save your money, drop the class you're buying this for and don't buy this stupid, stupid book.

2-0 out of 5 stars needs updating poorly executed!!
this not a good book on I&C instead of teaching you about line diagrams or ladder logic the author starts by comparing a cars wiring diagram to industrial wiring a very bad idea, I have wired thousands of circuits three phase and single phase motors and controls, also I am an Industrial Technician and alot of the devices and diagrams are 20 - 30 years old very out of date, this book is made for someone in production or management to learn a little more about how the plant works but as far as it being a teaching tool for technicians it misses the mark, no correct ladder logic diagrams or motors and controls or proccess controls,no practical hands on training from this publication this guy has never done this type of work in his life, he does not understand much about it, so if you are looking for a book on this subject skip this book it is junk at best a waste of money!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars It's just as difficult as the reviews are saying
I read the chapters, I know the material, and when I get to the questions I can't answer any of them.It became incredibly frustrating because I did what I was suppose to do and even then it's impossible to go about solving the problems. For a while I thought I was just an idiot, maybe I am, I don't know anymore.I feel like a piece of tape that's lost its stickiness and can't stick to anything anymore. That's exactly what this book will reduce you to.

The worst part is is it's all simple math, adding, subtracting, and multiplying.

I hate this book.

Ordered this book over a month ago.now am in class w/ no book.still havent heard anything....

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst text book ever written!
It's hard to avoid a book that's mandatory for a class, but if you have other options I suggest you steer away from this one.I've never seen a more poorly written text book in both my undergrad and grad level courses! This book is a complete disaster. The questions/problems at the end of the chapter assigned for homework do not have supporting examples to learn from.It is a complete guessing game at how to arrive at the correct answer.I had to buy this book for my class but do not plan on using it afterwards. It is completely worthless! ... Product Description
Protein engineering has proved to be one of the more fruitful technological approaches in biotechnology, being both very powerful and able to generate valuable intellectual property. The book aims to present examples in which the application of protein engineering has successfully solved problems arising in industrial biotechnology.
There is a section on its use to enhance purification of recombinant proteins. The use of protein engineering to modify the activity or the stability of industrial enzymes from lipases to proteases, from carboxypeptidases to glucanases and glucosidases, and from pectin modifying enzymes to enzymes able to degrade recalcitrant compounds is extensively covered. It is shown how areas as diverse as agrofood technology, fine chemistry, detergents, bioremediation and biosensors receive significant contributions from protein and solvent engineering.
The application of protein engineering to health care is also covered, from the development of new vaccines to new potential ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Old world model engineering
Heh, a reprint of old Greenly. I got an original of this second-hand quite a while ago, for the collectible retro-machinist fun of it. It is a fun book, and there's a lot that is still applicable from 1915 when this book was written, but there's a lot that's moved on, too. That's why I give it 3 stars. Nothing wrong with it (except the boilers won't pass muster these days), but if you're starting out then get something more recent.

3-0 out of 5 stars should have been split into 3 books
I bought this book thinking it would help me with understanding IC motors... not yet.

Pros:
Basically the material in the book is great - covers a LOT of ground, and the writer has a depth of knowledge and practicality which is excellent. It's refreshing to read an author who's not admonishing me to buy every obscure tool, and have a myriad of tools I'll only use once.

Cons:
The photographs in the book are so dark and contrasted they appear as if photocopied - the diagrams are fine, but the photographs have suffered badly (thankfully there aren't too many photos - lots of drawing though). Also there is so much material being covered in this book that it's hard to really delve into the detail on any one subject to the true depth of understanding the author displays. I honestly feel this book would have been a lot more readable if it were split into 3-4 books, and each book given the level of treatise the author was capable of giving it.

Summary:
I guess this isn't beginner material (for that use Workshop Practise books), but the material would be intermediate - it could include advanced material if more depth was included. I wouldn't start with this book, but I'd far from consider it a waste of time or money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can you make a steam engine from scratch?
I dig model engineering (Brit-speak for "home shop machinist"), and there is a lot to dig in Greenly's 1915 classic Model Engineering.I bought it from Lindsay Books a few years ago, and I just love it.What's it about?Well, from the editor's preface:

"This book is the work of a thoroughly practical engineer possessing unequaled experience of model making, and it is addressed to the amateur desirous of learning how mechanical models, chiefly prime movers, operate and how they can be made in the home workshop. It fully describes the tool equipment necessary, shows how to use the tools and how to execute the numerous handcraft processes involved, and then enters into the details of steam, petrol and electric models; it shows the functions of the various parts, and explains, step by step, the actual amateur workshop methods of building them up, the reader being taken easily and gradually through the construction of ever part and the assembling of the complete models, these including boilers steam engines, internal-combustion engines, steam locomotives, electric locomotives, permanent ways, power hammers, cannon, etc., etc. ..."

Chapters include: equipping a model engineer's workshop; the lathe and its tooling; the various processes used in lathe work; model steam engine cylinders and their types; connecting rods, bearings, eccentrics and engine cranks; steam engine valve and reversing gears; boiler design and construction; engine and boiler valves & fittings; force pumps, injectors and gauges; firing model boilers. It shows you how to make a model 1-in. by 1-in. vertical steam engine; a high-speed compound condensing engine with coil boiler; a 1/2-in. scale model locomotive; modelelectric locomotive; internal combustion engines; model railway engineering, miscellaneous working models, and model G.C.R. Express locomotive. This book tackles building models running the gamut from from a crane and a cannon, to steam engines and historic locomotives.

Model engineers aren't afraid of making anything (even things they perhaps should fear).I recommend this book to anyone who wants to make things, not just assemble kits. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful text
Though a bit dated the information is well put together.
Text for the environmental engineering course at Conestoga College

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical models for Corporate Environmental Strategies
I bought this book while writing my under-graduation final project in "Corporate Environmental Strategies", which was later published in a Brazilian magazine called Industrial Ecology. The book changed the way I see environmentalism in a very important way: it made me stop discussing about the real state of the world and start worrying about improving it (in those times I had read 'The skeptical Environmentalist' by Bjorn Lomborg and 'The Ultimate Resource 2' by Julian Simon, which are great books in my opinion). I started to understand that the most important is not to define where we stand, but to make the world a better place.

Graedel and Allenby propose practical and detailed strategies in order to 'green' the production process. They start the book with a really unbiased discussion about environmentalism and slowly provide the context for the introduction of environmental processes into the industrial world (full table of contents below). The text is written in a very clear and didactic way, and the technical terms are explained from A-Z.

I strongly recommend this book for engineers, environmentalists, managers, biologists, and people who want to improve the world's environment.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Written in a clear and readable style by an experienced author of teaching texts, Engineering Design Methods is an integrated design textbook that presents specific methods within an overall strategy from concept to detail design. It also outlines the nature of design thinking, and sets it within broader contexts of product development and design process management. The book is much more than a manual of procedures; throughout, there is discussion and explication of the principles and practice of design.

Building on the outstanding success of the previous three editions, this new edition cements the position of Engineering Design Methods at the forefront of engineering and industrial design as an essential text not only for students and lecturers but also for practitioners. The book promotes a flexible approach to the design process, and provides explicit, step-by-step advice on how to implement several separate design methods that have been shown to be of value in both education and practice.

This revised fourth edition -

  • promotes a flexible approach to the design process,
  • provides explicit, step-by-step advice on how to implement several separate design methods that have been shown to be of value in both education and practice,
  • contains new case studies and examples from industry that further broaden the scope of the book from engineering design into product design,
  • includes a significant new chapter presenting user scenarios; a procedure for investigating potential product user wants and needs, that culminates in a design brief identifying an opportunity for developing a new product concept,
  • features a book companion website with powerpoint slides for instructors.

Reviewers’ comments:

“Engineering Design Methods… is a valuable contribution to the engineering design literature. The engineering design methods presented are those that are of practical significance and the book is a must for anyone wishing to raise the standard of their design work. The design methods are described clearly and succinctly, examples are used to illustrate principles and design strategies are presented that show how the methods are best employed”. Professor Graham Thompson, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UMIST, UK

“Professor Nigel Cross’ treatment of Engineering Design is a singularly successful treatment for my courses because it is short and concise enough to be read by virtually all students. Furthermore, his interpretations are open enough to allow the inquiring mind to fill out the picture, incorporating and extending the ideas to fit the reflective designer’s own needs.” Professor Larry Leifer, Stanford Center for Design Reseach, Stanford University, USA

“This book is an excellent book as a textbook for design methodology both for undergraduate and graduate level… Students will gain a firm foundation of design methods from problem definition to design evaluations from this book”. 4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book in order to give help in structuring and evaluating ideas,
The author, Prof. Nigel Cross (The Open University,Milton Keynes, United Kingdom) offers by this book a strategic approach and a number of tactics as aids for designing successful products. It is intended primarly for use by students and teachers of engineering design and industrial design. Its main emphasis is on the design of products that have an engineering content, although most of the principles and approaches that it teaches are relevant to the design of all kinds of products. It is essentially concerned with the problem formulation and the conceptional and embodiment stages of design, rather than the detail design which is the concern of most engineering texts. This book can most effectively be used in conjunction with projects and exercises that require the exploration and clarificatioin of design problems and the generation and evaluation of design solutions. The author offers several interesting and useful methods that are structured in clear charts and diagrams that are easy to survey. Especially the evaluation methods are very interesting: According to my knowledge Nigel Cross ist the only author of a book of design who describes e.g. the Morphological Chart Method. Cross dos not present his methods in abstraction, but shows also the practical application by examples everybody can understand. Unfortunately, there are not many pictures or photos and colour is also a missing thing in this book. And the rare pictures you can find in this book seem to be a product of the period between 1970 and 1980, although this book was first published in 2000.

Building on the world-wide success of the previous editions, this new edition reinforces its original three-part structure. It is devided in the following chapters or headlines: Part One: Understanding Design (1. The Nature of Design; 2. Design Ability; 3. The Design Process); Part Two: Doing Design (4. New Design Procedures; 5. Clarifying Objectives; 6. Establishing Functions; 7. Setting Requirements; 8. Determining Characteristics; 9. Generating Alternatives; 10. Evaluating Alternatives; 11. Improving Details) and Part Three: Managing Design (12. Design Strategies; 13. Product Development).

In my opinion this book is not only very useful for students or lectures but also for practitioners. - Dipl.-Ing., Dipl.-GwL., StR. Christoph Erlemeier, Stuttgart, Germany -

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast reference for product designers & design students
Nigel Cross framed the world's dialogue about "design thinking" with his 2006 book Designerly Ways of Knowing. His updated edition of Engineering Design Methods is a wonderful quick reference of common product design methods, described by design phase. This is no easy task because designers are notorious about using themselves to prototype new processes and models, so any book will be challenged to document a general shared set of methods for the product design community.

For those interested in learning more, another resource is Hugh Dubberly's How Do You Design?, which is still a work of progress years later.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little information.
I bought this book for an introductory engineering class and only opened it when I needed buzz phrases from it. All the useful information was covered easily in class by the professor (who was a graduate student who had no desire to teach at all.) The ideas in the book only warrant a few pages to be fully explained.

The book is very thin and most of its content is examples to illustrate the use of techniques it teaches. The examples have lots of unnecessary detail, which seem only to serve to thicken the book. You will either loathe needing to read through these or develop a habit of only reading the beginning pages of a chapter when studying.

If you are looking intobuying this book chances are it is for a class. There are no problems in the book to be worked out (which would be much better practice than these examples.) If you expect to be quizzed over the book, you can probably fake it if your professor also discusses the ideas in class, if not I sympathize with you and hope you try to persuade your school to drop this book from the curriculum.

4-0 out of 5 stars fuzzy issues to be mastered
If you are an engineering undergrad, this book will be fuzzier than most of your texts. It doesn't deal directly with the hard, quantitative issues like finding the load on suspension bridge, or laying out the control systems of a satellite. Instead, the book's subject is far more subjective. But no less essential. Product design is a skill you need to master, and the book tries to help you along.

Of the methodologies discussed, you might find the objectives tree and the evaluation chart to be especially useful. These can help you narrow down the design choices. ... Read more
