Product Description
More than 400 years after they were first written, Shakespeare's plays still offer a stunning glimpse into the motivations, desires, and deviancies of man. His characters are caught in situations modern readers can sympathize with, and his themes--love, family relations, adultery, power, treachery--are as relevant now as they were then.

Surprisingly, another aspect of the Bard's work that has withstood the test of time is his understanding of the brain. The Bard on the Brain is a marvelous combination of close readings of Shakespeare and the most current neurological research that together demonstrate how impulses and actions originate in the brain. Paul Matthews here shows us the center-stage role of the brain in famous scenes from Shakespeare's plays. With stunning color brain scans and clear English, Matthews demonstrates how uncannily Shakespeare perceived the brain at work in his characters' ideas and deeds, and how the living brain mirrors human experiences created centuries ago by the Bard.

Matthews's science is beautifully interwoven with Jeffrey McQuain's interpretations of many of the most significant soliloquies in all of Shakespeare's plays. The Bard on the Brain is also illustrated throughout with performance photos of acclaimed British and American actors--such as Morgan Freeman as Petruchio, Sir Ian McKellen as Prospero, Alfre Woodard as Paulina, and Anthony Hopkins as King Lear--from celebrated Shakespeare companies. The result of this partnership between scientist and scholar is a unique view of Shakespeare's characters, a dissection of his language, and a wonderfully oblique perspective on the human brain. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I must recommend this thought-provoking book to anyone with an interest in either of the two fields that Paul M. Matthews expertly interweaves.

I teach English and so was familiar with many of the passages of Shakespeare that are analysed but I had never myself given a moment's thought to any of the play's links to science. At first I was sceptical of the credence of these links to the brain but by the time I had read the first few chapters I was genuinely intrigued by the way Shakespeare does seem to have known about the brain.

One criticism that may be leveled is that it may not go into real depth in either of the fields the book covers, and for this reason it might not appeal to a true expert in Neurology or Shakesperean literature. However I for one found it not just an entertaining read but an intellectually stimulating one as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing and thought-provoking look at science and cultu
I was really intrigued by this book -- how often do scientists and literary scholars collaborate? This is not an academic book in the purest sense--but what's wonderful about it is that is written by two academics who are not afraid to show their love of Shakespeare and who want their work and interests to be accessible to a broad audience. The result is a fun and refreshing look at art and science, which I really enjoyed. The gorgeous illustrations are enticing, as is the often illuminating and always thought provoking commentary by the two authors. Since I am not a scientist, I was particularly taken by the brain imaging and commentary by Dr. Matthews. As a drama lover, I also enjoyed the many photos from performances of the Bard's plays.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some Shakespeare, Not Much Brain
This is a book with a most appealing title (at least for me): The Bard on the Brain.I've taught Shakespeare for many years, and I'm interested in what neuroscience has to say about literature.

The book was published by the Dana Foundation which does all kinds of good things in connection with the brain, nervous system, and the diseases thereof.Ordinarily their publications are very good.

What could Shakespeare say about the brain? As any Shakespearean could tell you, not much. The book consists of quotations from Shakespeare about various aspects of the mind (e.g., Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking, Falstaff on alcohol, Jaques on aging). The book then follows up with some statements about current knowledge of this or that aspect of brain function.

I have to say that I did not expect much from this approach and I got what I expected. The quotations from Shakespeare are fine, and the commentary on them inoffensive. The statements of brain function seemed tailored to someone who barely knows that there is such a thing as a brain, extremely elementary. This is really a coffee-table book.

The best thing in the book are the gorgeous full-page photographs of recent performances of Shakespeare, the basis for its coffee-table status.Unfortunately, the editors chose to reduce the brain images in size and to pretty them up with confusing backgrounds. It is very hard to see what the commentary is referring to.The scientific footnotes are lumped together in the back in a way that makes it hard to follow out any particular point.

A disappointment. And this is intended as a word to the wise. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Textbook
Of all the books I had to purchase while studying to be a Radiologic Technologist this was the poorest, by far. It is poorly written , does not follow through on its chapter objectives and is a real challenge to read.

This book does have good content but for those of you who are in your first semesters of Radiology technology it clearly does not simplify the information. It does not produce good examples or diagrams to make learning easy.It is also very cut and dry and makes it very difficult to read.It has no glossary and is poor in producing definitions. I highly recommend Bushong not only is the book fun to read but makes some of the more complex principles easier to understand. The workbook is really great also to help you prepare for your test and the end of the chapter quesions are nice because it helps to check see if you got the understanding of the chapter. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Coverage
To be honest, I haven't read it through yet, but above all it is amazing to see how wide coverage the book has. Literally the book covers all related areas of color imaging science. Mr. Lee seems to be omniscient.

But be warned that the book is extremely technical or scientific. It's full of formulas, no photographic images, illustrations, all in B&W, very intimidating. So it is not for anyone who is just interested in color science.

By the way, it is interesting to find that all the texts, graphs, everything in the book is in about 70~80% gray halftone, not in 100% K ink. Probably it's a mistake in production.

Product Description
Fourier Methods in Imaging introduces the mathematical tools for modeling linear imaging systems to predict the action of the system or for solving for the input. The chapters are grouped into five sections, the first introduces the imaging “tasks” (direct, inverse, and system analysis), the basic concepts of linear algebra for vectors and functions, including complex-valued vectors, and inner products of vectors and functions. The second section defines "special" functions, mathematical operations, and transformations that are useful for describing imaging systems. Among these are the Fourier transforms of 1-D and 2-D function, and the Hankel and Radon transforms. This section also considers approximations of the Fourier transform. The third and fourth sections examine the discrete Fourier transform and the description of imaging systems as linear "filters", including the inverse, matched, Wiener and Wiener-Helstrom filters. The final section examines applications of linear system models to optical imaging systems, including holography.

  • Provides a unified mathematical description of imaging systems.
  • Develops a consistent mathematical formalism for characterizing imaging systems.
  • Helps the reader develop an intuitive grasp of the most common mathematical methods, useful for describing the action of general linear systems on signals of one or more spatial dimensions.
  • Offers parallel descriptions of continuous and discrete cases.
  • Includes many graphical and pictorial examples to illustrate the concepts.

This book helps students develop an understanding of mathematical tools for describing general one- and two-dimensional linear imaging systems, and will also serve as a reference for engineers and scientists

Product Description
There is an ever-increasing demand for a standard way to transport colours among devices on the Internet, and for achieving colour fidelity across digital media. The rapid growth in colour imaging technology has led to the emergence of colour management systems. These systems require colour appearance models so that images produced in one medium and viewed in a particular environment, may be reproduced in a second medium and viewed under different conditions.

The eagerly anticipated second edition of Colour Appearance Models brings the fundamental issues and current solutions in the area of colour appearance modelling together in a single place for those needing to solve practical problems or looking for background for ongoing research projects. This book provides the relevant information for an updated review of colour appearance and provide details of many of the most widely used models to date, for example, Nayatani et al., Hunt, and RLAB and the ATD and LLAB appearance models that are of increasing interest for some applications. It also includes the recently formulated CIECAM02 model that represents a significant improvement of CIECAM97S and is the best possible model based on current knowledge. Fairchild presents an updated overview of device-independent colour imaging and finally introduces the concept of image appearance modelling as a potential future direction for colour appearance modelling research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, educational and an excellence reference
This book, by one of the leading scientists on the subject, introduces therelatively recent domain of color appearance. That is, the study of the*subjective* appearance of colors, depending on their surrounding, background, context, etc. The emphasis is thus on the various effects whichaffect our perception of colors (light intensity, background, simultaneouscontrast, etc.) and their modeling.

A must have for all those workingwith colors. The presentation is very educational, the visual illusions arefascinating, it is both a pleasure to read and an excellent reference toconsult on the subject.

It introduces human vision and the perception ofcolors, the field of psychophysics and its methods, colorimetry (theobjective study of physical colors), and the rest of the book is dedicatedto color appearance itself. Important terminologies are discussed (e.g. thecrucial difference between luminosity, brightness and lightness), thencolor systems (Munsel, etc.), then the various effects which affect theappearance of colors, viewing conditions, chromatic adaptation, perceptually uniform color spaces, and analytical color appearance models.Different models are reviewed and compared (Hunt, Nayatani, RLAB,preversion of CIECAM). Finally applications and device-independent imagingare described.

Note that this book is not a book on colorimetry (seeWyszecki and Stiles) nor a book on color reproduction (see Hunt), but abook on the subjective appearance of colors. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but outdated review of medical imagining
The second page of my copy of this book states:
Reprinted 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003
This is pretty much the same text published in 1988 (after corrections)
So:
Fuzzy 80's CT scan illustrations
Nothingon fat suppression, or more modern image acquisition sequences in the "Nuclear Magnetic Imaging" chapter
Definitely no mention of harmonic ultrasound
Many anachronistic references to 'future technological improvements'

I am not sure whether the publisher's reluctance to update this book represents apathy or avarice, but the failure to more frequently revise a textbook in such a rapidly changing area relegates this book from serious consideration as a primary textbook.

Some chapters are quite clear and complete (for example X-ray) but overall the writng style is a little obtuse.

In summary- some good chapters but outdated, stylistically hum-drum and superceded by the numerous other texts in this area. ... Read more

Product Description
Buried waste on the seabed is a major source of pollution. But, very often, waste sites are not known until a serious problem occurs, or are not adequately mapped. Recent examples around Europe include WWI and WWII ammunition dump sites (e.g. Beufort Dyke in the UK), dumped nuclear submarines in the Arctic Seas, clandestine or hidden toxic-waste in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.. Even if properly documented, waste sites evolve with time (dumped material can move with currents and tides, especially on a scale of decades; toxic-material barrels can corrode and leak). This book shows the results of a concerted EU-funded effort to tackle this problem and find innovative ways to identify and map toxic waste sites ona the seabed, whether they have been covered with sediments or not. These results are applicable to any region on the seabed in the entire world. ... Read more
