Product Description
Poems, like mushrooms, demand our close attention before they can be found or seen at all. As mushrooms are a hybrid kingdom first thought to be plants, now believed closer to animals, but truly neither, a life form in fact uniquely their own so it is with poems, which reside hybrid between music and speech, between logic and feeling, between waking thought and the leapings of dream, doing work they alone can. And then, as the largest living creature on earth (described in Laura Kasischke s poem) is a fungal mat whose expressed DNA extends over many square miles in Oregon s eastern forests, so poetry s mostly unseen devices underlie, sustain, and connect over vast distances other dimensions of language, whether lullaby, sermon, or political address at both its best and its worst. As mushrooms hold dangerous powers, so do poems Plato famously banned poets from his ideal Republic because their words can sway in ways beyond reason s reach. Both mushrooms and poems hold shamanic potential; when taken inside us fully, they have the power to alter consciousness in profoundly unpredictable ways. Neither porcini nor poems are day to day staples: continuous availability is confined to the more easily grown, more easily storable grains. Yet the intensities of the rare, the seasonal, the brief, the strange, and that which requires both a kneeling intimacy and depth of knowledge to be safely known at all these are needed as much as oatmeal, rice, or bread. It is that elusive, concentrated presence, the sudden coming and going of life forms mostly hidden, the awareness of mysteries that can only be given, not forced into being, that both the mushrooms and the poems in this volume point toward. Gathered from the root-zones of many different trees, knife-scraped from rock-face, lifted from dung, spore-flung into air, these gathered mushroom poems offer undomestic, distinctive discoveries to all who choose to join the effort to find them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fungi Find
I discovered this little gem by accident. Originally I was drawn to the book by the cover, but discovered an amazing collection of poetry by some very well-known authors. Being from Spokane, Washington, I was excited to see Sherman Alexie's contribution, "The Anatomy of a Mushroom". I had to double check, but some of the the other contributor's name looked familiar - sure enough -- not one but probably 4 or 5 Poet Laureates; Robert Penn Warren, Maxine Kumen and Richard Wilbur to name a few. But what struck me as amazing was to see the poem "Mushroom" by Sylvia Plath - how does one include that in a modern anthology? It doesn't really matter - what matters is this a great book - not to be devoured in one sitting, but over time, in multiple courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Fun Fungus
Science experiment gone wrong when a fungus grows and grows and takes over the ENTIRE school! Also there is some humor at school lunches in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun with Fungus!
I keep telling people that aspergillus fumigatus, sporotrichosis, cryptococcosis neoformans were fun things- and Arthur Dorros and David Catrow have made it come to life. The illustrations are goey and as dimorphic as their real life branching hyphal counterparts! What fun for children to learn a bit about the ubiquitous world of mycology-- and end up in the Museum of Fungus and Industry to boot.As the administrator of a university-based of the Mycology Study "Unit" there are aspects to the "discovery" and "experiment" process that are truer than life, especially some of the zany characters and ultimate culminating dog and pony show!Thank you!Thank you!I can finally explain to my kids what I do every day!Fungus Fighters Unite! And what ever you do.....don't inhale!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a delightful book which you will definitely enjoyreading to your child. My second grader read this book to me and heloved it and was laughing and commenting on the pictures throughoutthe book!

The story is cute and nonsensical about fungus taking over and eating the school! The author, David Catrow did a wonderful job as his illustrations are most colorful, exagerrated and funny! They will sure keep your interest as you explore each and every page.

As a parent I loved this book!

This book is a winner and I thoroughly recommend it!!It is sure to capture your child's imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a thriller!
As the children's librarian at the community library, I'm always looking for a book that will appeal to the kids and when I read this one, I know for sure the kids would love it!

When three science students leave their fungus experiment unattended over spring break, the fungus grows and growsuntil it becomes out of control. It appears to be eagerly eating up theschool. The illustrations are outlandish and a delight with full pages ofyellow and green fungus that takes on various shapes.

The humor iscontagious and I can hardly wait to hear the laughter of the kids when theybegin to read this book! ... Read more

Doug Kaufmann, David Holland and Jami Clark have helped thousands of people from all walks of life regain their good health. Now it's your turn!In this, the third volume of The Fungus Link, Kaufmann, Holland and Clark explain that the microscopic fungi and fungal toxins in our food, air and antibiotic medications are capable of causing a wide variety of health problems, and that they often lie at the root of even some of today's more debilitating, cause-unknown diseases. "To do more than simply treat the symptoms of disease," Kaufmann says, "to achieve true wellness, fungi and their toxins must be addressed."The Fungus Link, Volume III includes an antifungal diet plan divided into three phases of gradually decreasing difficulty. Followed into three phases of gradually decreasing difficulty. Followed in the context of Kaufmann and Holland's Antifungal Program (also inside), the phases limit our exposure to fungi and fungal toxins and maximize our bodies' defenses in a proven, disease-fighting strategy. The book also details the uses of a number of natural, over-the-counter antifungal supplements, as well as several prescription antifungals. Finally, it features selected dishes from Kaufmann's recipe book, Eating Your Way to Good Health. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the living proof
I guess it hurts the average scientist or doctor ego when someonediscovered something that other did not,Here is the fact, I had many health problems that no doctor could fix, nothing to die from, but high blood pressure skin problems and255 pounds, that is overweight for my frame, after learning from these books, I lost 64 pounds, I am healthy, better muscle tone, even my memory improved, and even my potency increased,( in several different fields ),so for the big shoteducated scientists:turn of the ego hurt, and turn on the research, because these books found something revolutionary., ohfew more other things: I sleep better, I feel better, my hair is not full of white skin flakes as it was before the diet, I do not have stomach problems, I do not have heartburn anymore, I do not wake tired in the morning,a cut or wound heals faster, I do not cash the flue when all others around me do, and I tell you, I use to have a week immune system, even my nails look better, well, I hope I did not leave something out. I recommend anyone who is skeptical, :take the self-discipline and just do the diet, and see what is the result. Will be very happyyou did. ( By the way, at first I also did not believe in it, my parents were doctors and I use to have the habit of calling on the pills when something was wrong with my health)
I must add that is IMPORTANT TO READ ALL THE EDITIONS PLUS THE COOK BOOK BY THIS AUTHOR, because after loosing 64 pounds I went back to my old eating habits and gained it all back, now after keeping thecookbook my only food source, I am able to keep up 40 pounds on a constant base. It works, with knowledge plus motivation plus doing it... = works and gets results.

1-0 out of 5 stars Same as all of his other books
The information on fungus is the same as all of the other fungus link books. Lots of re-cycled information such as recipes, anti-fungal diet as well. They have a summation on antifungal drugs and supplements, but no advice on how much supplementation to use. These books are really a collection of essays and not what I would call a book. They also make some absurd calims eg p. 284

" Argentineans consume more beef than anyone in the world, yet they have no heart disease or cancer as a result of this. Why? They let their cattle graze in the open feilds instead of feeding them moldy grain from silos like we do in the United States."

Maybe they have lower rates of heart disease or cancer????

This just gives you an idea of the ridiculous, non-scientific superlatives found throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invest in your excellent health
To my knowledge, no other person other than Mr Kaufmann goes into such detail as to what is REALLY wrong with Americans and their pitiful health.Antibiotics are not the answer. In fact, when you take most antibiotics, you're feeding the problem---which is why you're not getting better.Give Mr Kaufmann's protocol (which he calls the Phase I diet) 2 weeks. You're going to see a difference and the added bonus is that the food is REAL and tastes terrific. No fancy recipes or exotic ingredients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classical book
I work at Universidad de Buenos Aires, my main is Food Mycology. I have being using the "Compendium of Soil Fungi" for several years as a very useful tool for determining fungi; particullarly, complementing the classical literature in my research field. I think this book was very carefully thought and written. The authors have introduced each taxa sintetically, but pointing out the more important morphological aspects to be taken into account. The keys and descriptions are practical and accurate ones respectively; the illustrations and photographiesare very clear. In addition, physiological aspects were treated in extenso for a lot of taxa. The bibliographical support is actually wide, and takes one of the two Compendium's volumes. In conclussion, I feel this book, which was written in 1980, has a place within the classics. ... Read more

Product Description

Pictorial Atlas of Soil and Seed Fungi: Morphologies of Cultured Fungi and Key to Species, Third Edition describes and illustrates more than 515 fungal species, including:

  • 49 oomycetous species belonging to seven genera
  • 42 zygomycetous species belonging to 12 genera
  • 52 ascomycetous species belonging to 28 genera
  • 42 basidiomycetous species belonging to 27 genera
  • 319 anamorphic (deuteromycetous or mitosporic) species belonging to 145 genera

Dr. Watanabe describes all fungi alphabetically under the orders of Oomycota, Zygomycota, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Anamorphic (Deuteromycetous) fungi. For each genus, he includes type species, references, morphology, and materials. Morphologies of cultured fungi are briefly described and illustrated together with the description of the isolation sources and methods.

The book illustrates all fungi alongside morphologies and colonies of their fresh agar cultures or dried specimens, providing ready access to morphologically similar fungi for quick comparison.

Most of the fungi are isolated from soil, plant roots, and seeds, and the rest are from wood-inhabiting fruiting bodies, their spores, or the spore-like structures associated with them. They are mostly collected in Japan, but some are from the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Switzerland, and Taiwan, R.O.C.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best guide for identifying European fungi
I bought this book when it came out in the early 1980s for identifying British fungi. At the time it was revolutionary as the use of photographs allowed the author to depict mushrooms much more accurately than the paintings of earlier guides. It is still one of the top field guides to this region (also check Courtecuisse & Duhem and Jordan). I still use this volume a lot for identifying American fungi, both in the tropics and North America. Although I have over 200 field guides of different sorts on my shelves this remains one of my all time favourites. If you're interested in fungi, don't hesitate.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of, if not the best!!!
I have been a big mushroom entusiast for some time now and I have at least 14 different field guides to mushrooms, this book is my all time favourate. Everything you have ever wanted in a field guide, pictures pictures and more pictures. Every mushroom is photographed and represented clearly from all angles, even cross sections showing the flesh. Good descriptions for every one, maybe not the longest description but detailed enough. If more information is needed on a mushroom I look it up else where. The photos make identifying mushrooms a breeze. I would recommend this book to any one interested in Mushrooms, I for one could not do without it!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Collectable
This is the rare 1982 chapbook printing of Lovecraft's sonnet cycle, published by Necronomicon Press. It is becoming a rare collector's item, so if you have it, HOLD ON TO IT -- it may be worth quite a bit of money in years to come. This may have been the first time that the sonnet sequence was published in its corrected text. The version published by Arkham House in 1963, in Lovecraft's COLLECTED POEMS is faulty, and it was that version that was reprinted in the 1971 Ballantine Books mass paperback edition, FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH & OTHER POEMS.For an excellent and definitive text (and costing just a few more dollars than the chapbook here offered), you may purchased, here at amazon.com, the splendid hardcover edition of Lovecraft's COLLECTED POEMS, in which the sonnet cycle is lightly annotated by editor, S. T. Joshi. This chapbook features a great cover with artwork by Jason Eckhardt, but one wishes that it would have included an in-depth introduction by S. T. Joshi or David Schultz.

There has long been a discussion concerning the "plot" of FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH, and in his review here John Salonia Jr. seems confused by the lack of consistency in this plot. There is no plot in the sonnet cycle.Only the first three sonnets constitute an attempt at linking the sonnets with a storyline -- but Lovecraft seems to have lost interest in this after writing those first three sonnets.Although Lovecraft's sonnets cannot compare in artistry with the superlative sonnets of Donald Wandrei, they are quite delightful, and some of them are profound in their expression of Lovecraft's cosmic loneliness. They have some magnificent imagery, and fans of the Cthulhu Mythos will find much herein that will re-ward their reading.

The most anticipated edition of the sonnets is yet to be published: THE ANNOTATED FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH by David C, Schultz, which will, some strange aeon, be published by Hippocampus Press. This will be the absolute definitive text, richly annotated and containing numerous illustrations inspired by FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH!It will be a fantastic book, IF Mr. Schultz ever completes his work on it.The sonnets have been recorded at least once, read by John Arthur, accompanied by music composed by Mike Olson, under the direction of Lawrence A. Russo. This recording was first available in cassette form from FEDOGAN & BREMER, then later it was re-released as audio cd, accompanied by a superb program chapbook.

FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH has long inspired those of us who write Lovecraftian and Cthulhu Mythos fiction and poetry.Perhaps the finest poetic collection that has been inspir'd by Lovecraft's sonnets is Ann K. Schwader's IN THE YADDITH TIME (Mythos Books, 2007), a sonnet sequence that is the work of the finest poet working in the weird genre today.I am working on my own collection of prose poems inspired by FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH, a wee chapbook that will be called SOME UNKNOWN GULF OF NIGHT, with each of the thirty-six prose poems inspir'd directly by Lovecraft's cycle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fungi from Yuggoth
This sonnet-sequence is a loosely-plotted voyage of a seeker after occult lore through the various cosmoses opened to him by an ancient evil book.It passes through horror (some of the pieces are truly spine-tingling) toan awe-filled transcendence that surpasses mere horror (itself purely anearthly emotion).Go with it and you won't be disappointed; but it isdiffuse in its "plot".The ending strikes an almost hopeful noteas the nameless narrator finally gains true insight to the very nature ofexistence.

3-0 out of 5 stars His Fiction Is Better
This is a small collection of Lovecraft's "Cthulhu Mythis" verses. It amounts to only 9 pages, and although Lovecraft was a competent versifier and wrote endless reams of poetry, his verse just can't match upto his fiction. If you are a diehard Lovecraft fan, you'll love this, otherwise the poems will seem kind of bland.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nine page poem in the Cthulu style/mythos
Excellent poetry, however, it IS only nine pages long.Due to title pages, etc. the poem ends on page thirteen.Numerologists have fun.The special $2.85 surcharge was a little steep, especially for something NECRONOMICON PRESS only charges $2.50.Anyway, this is for Cthulu nuts only, otherwise its NOT worth the potential $9.30 after shipping ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a single reference that addresses a multitude of natural toxins!
This is an essential reference text for medical libraries, poison and drug information centers, clinical toxicologists and anyone who manages patients who may be exposed to natural toxins. With the increasing use of alternative medicine, this book would be a useful addition to medical practice libraries and emergency departments. The author is Donald Barceloux, MD, the co-author of Medical Toxicology, which is still a staple reference in the discipline of clinical toxicology.Dr. Barceloux combines his expertise in medical toxicology and emergency medicine and his skills as an author to address the significant and challenging natural toxins that are associated with morbidity and mortality. The book is divided into five sections: foodborne and microbial toxins, fungal toxins (mushrooms), medicinal herbs and essential oils, toxic plants and venomous animals (even marine poisons). Each monograph follows a template that is consistent throughout the book and makes it easy to navigate from section to section.Strengths of the book include placing each toxin in perspective with regard to potential morbidity and mortality, focused but comprehensive monographs, and extensive referencing. After using the book for a few weeks, I noted only one minor weakness--a number of terms are missing from the index. For example, a minimal number of terms such as poinsettia, philodendron, Araceae are missing. Thus, it took slightly longer to locate the information about those plants. While all of the information included in the book can be found in a multitude of hardcopy references and online resources, this is the only book that combines everything into a single, authoritative, contemporary and easy to read reference. ...
