4-0 out of 5 stars Fungal ID
It is a well written, and illustrated book for the idenfication of fungi, however, the inclusion of plates for appearance on media and more direct photos would improve the publication (and no doubt increase the cost) otherwise it is a good book for the identication of fungi in the laboratory that processes some fungi, as an offshoot to the microbiology department, a mycology department would include this in its library but would include other texts, and resources. In summary good at uni good on the bench, but would need suplementation in a pure mycology department.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book for fungi identification
I have had very satisfactory experiences in the use of this book as a guide for the identification of Food Fungi, even though outside written forFungi of Medical Importance. It displays a very particular approach thatmakes extremely didactic, mainly for the novices in the subject or thatthey do not make fungi identification of routine. It presents first aclassification of the fungi based on the color of the colony and thecharacteristic formation of conidias of the fungi genera. In one secondpart of the book it makes a more detailed description of each one of theconsidered generas. And finally it makes an review of the main medias usedin the isolation and identification of fungi. ... Read more

Product Description
Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan (1879-1967) was a prominent British mycologist, specialising in the sexual process of fungi. In 1909 she was appointed Head of the Department of Botany at Birkbeck College, becoming Professor of Botany when Birkbeck College joined the University of London in 1920. This volume was first published in 1922 as part of the Cambridge Botanical Handbooks series. The introduction provides a detailed description of the structure, sexual reproduction, parasitism and symbiosis of all fungi, with subsequent chapters describing fully the morphology and reproduction of genera within the phylum ascomycetes and the orders ustilaginales and uredinales on which Gwynne-Vaughan based her research. Illustrations and a bibliography accompany each chapter. This volume provides an insight into the study of mycology in the early twentieth century, before technological advances in the field of cytology revolutionized the discipline. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice from One Who Knows
The chapters on Allergies and Nail Fungus in Dr. Walt Stoll's book, Saving Yourself from the Disease-Care Crisis alone are worth the price of the book to me.The information is easy to comprehend and the advice good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally something that works!
When I bought this book I was in the bottom of a deep, dark hole
physically. My health had totally fallen apart.I had lost 20 lbs.
and no doctor could seem to give me any explanation as to why.
I felt miserable and couldn't eat much of anything without a lot
of pain, cramping, etc.I couldn't sleep at night and my muscles
were so tight. It turned out I had fibromyalgia.I got multiple
tests done and everything came up negative, until I was hanging
out at a fibromyalgia website one night (in desperation) and most
everyone was comparing their prescription drugs and discussing
disability payments, but one gal said she wasn't on any meds and
was using alternative treatment. She told me about Dr. Stoll's
website, and from there I found a helping hand that reached down
into that dark hole I was in and showed me how to climb out of it.
Dr. Stoll didn't do it for me; he taught me how to do it.Ten
years later I still have FMS, but my weight is normal and as long
as I work Dr. Stoll's program for wellness as decribed in the book,
I feel like I have no limitations.

Basically, he uses what he calls a three-legged stool approach to
treatment -- diet, exercise and skilled relaxation techniques.
He told me in a phone coaching session that the relaxation
techniques would be the most difficult thing for me to master,
because it would seem too simplistic to help, but that it would
give me about 25% improvement, more than anything else I would do. That really made me set my mind to mastering it. Today,
I still spend about an hour each morning doing relaxation/meditation
exercises to relax my muscles.Dr.Stoll, thank you for your
generous contribution to health from this book and your healing
philosophy.Your book was so valuable that I have probably given
about 20 copies to other folks through the past ten years!

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook for Health
This is not a laborious reference tome, but simply a great practical guide to living in harmony with your body to achieve wellness and stay there.Even if you were to read no other books on health, there's enough packed between the covers of Saving Yourself to keep most of us humming along and feeling great for the rest of our lives.

Dr. Stoll's tale of lab rats that were impervious to rabies literally made my jaw drop. His explanation for their power to stave off such a virulent disease set the stage for me to understand his approach to achieving long-term health and vigor by staying as far as possible from the edge of the cliff and falling into disease and suffering.

Likewise, a cure for the common cold is offered in which Dr. Stoll does not take credit for anything extraordinary, instead presenting his method as a simple, common-sense approach that costs little and has worked every time for his patients for decades.

Finally, an honest and open critique of the medical-pharmaceutical complex and the political nature of licensing boards is told from an insider's point of view.Even with decades of experience under his belt, Walt Stoll shows us how difficult it is for a doctor to publicly embrace alternative health philosophies which clearly threaten the profitability and power of established western medicine and the industries that support it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, inspirational, compassionate approach to healing
As a health care professional (I'm a Certified Massage Therapist and a Holistic Practitioner), I would like to recommend this book to people who would like to feel better, especially if their health conditions have not been helped by the current system. In Saving Yourself, Dr. Stoll weaves several themes. He starts by telling the fascinating story of how he changed from following only his medical school training to learning about holistic methods and becoming a holistic practitioner. He describes how this transformed his own life and the lives of his patients.Dr. Stoll presents simple remedies for healing common conditions (including some major illnesses), offers useful information about the causes and resolution of illness, and gifts us with practical resources for self-help.Most people today know that the health care system in the U.S. is not working well, but Dr. Stoll gives a unique viewpoint -- a holistic doctor's perspective.Being a holistic practitioner myself, I already knew much about the crisis of health care in our country, but this book opened my eyes even further to understand what is really happening, and why, and where caution is needed.

In this book, Dr. Stoll speaks with candor and directness, revealing his open-minded, down-to-earth, and compassionate approach to practicing medicine with the patient's best interest at heart.I found this book to be helpful, insightful, and thought-provoking.It may bring the start of a new approach to health and healing for those with chronic conditions who are wise enough to take Dr. Stoll's words and use them to move beyond internal and external limitations. It did for me.By using this book and studying the material on his website, I incorporated his ideas as part of my life and made dramatic improvements in my own chronic condition of 20 years which I thought would never change.I am grateful for the help I have received from Dr. Stoll who has so generously shared his wisdom and experience.

Health care practitioners of all types may also benefit professionally from receiving Dr. Stoll's insight and practical experience in this book, gathered through more than 40 years of helping people heal themselves.I found his words inspirational and helpful in my own practice.I read a quote this morning that made me think of Dr. Stoll:"Genius is the capacity for productive reaction against one's training." -- Bernard Berenson.Kudos to Dr. Stoll for going beyond his training and the limitations of the health care system and bringing them to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO RESOLVE A CHRONIC DISEASE
Dr. Stoll has written a book that is years ahead of it's time.He introduces a fusion of conventional (allopathic) medicine and successful alternative therapies. It provides a fundamental understanding of themechanisms that lead to chronic diseases of all kinds.More importantly, once you have read his book and understand the mechanisms you can proceedto implement therapies that will help you re-gain your health. ... Product Description
Biodiversity of Fungi is essential for anyone collecting and/or monitoring any fungi.Fascinating and beautiful, fungi are vital components of nearly all ecosystems and impact human health and our economy in a myriad of ways.Standardized methods for documenting diversity and distribution have been lacking. A wealth of information, especially regrading sampling protocols, compiled by an international team of fungal biologists, make Biodiversity of Fungi an incredible and fundamental resource for the study of organismal biodiversity.

Chapters cover everything from what is a fungus, to maintaining and organizing a permanent study collection with associated databases; from protocols for sampling slime molds to insect associated fungi; from fungi growing on and in animals and plants to mushrooms and truffles. The chapters are arranged both ecologically and by sampling method rather than by taxonomic group for ease of use. The information presented here is intended for everyone interested in fungi, anyone who needs tools to study them in nature including naturalists, land managers, ecologists, mycologists, and even citizen scientists and sophiscated amateurs.

Covers all groups of fungi - from molds to mushrooms, even slime molds
Describes sampling protocols for many groups of fungi
Arranged by sampling method and ecology to coincide with users needs
Beautifully illustrated to document the range of fungi treated and techniques discussed
Natural history data are provided for each group of fungi to enable users to modify suggested protocols to meet their needs ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mycological guide for beginners and more experienced mycologists
If you are looking for a nice mycological encyclopedia that deals with methods and protocols, "Biodiversity of Fungi: inventory and monitoring methods" organized by Foster and co-authors is the book of choice! It has several basic and more advanced methods of isolation that cover the different fungal groups. Despite of that the book provides introductory chapters on how to proceed in fungal ecological surveys and to analyze the results as well as a minor chapter of fungal phylogenetics. As a matter of fact, big projects like this lack more details when dealing with each fungal group but still is a major source of information that any mycologist or mycology student interested in ecological aspects of fungi should have in their private libraries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost comprehensive
The reference included chapters on most aspects of mycology, with an intended focus on biodiversity. Two approaches to understanding fungi from unique environments were completely ignored: aeromycology and fossil fungi. There is a large body of literature from research in both these areas. The fossil fungi particularly need a better correlation with contemporary species and a discussion of their diversity would have been an asset to the theme of this compilation. ... Read more

Product Description

This completely revised second edition provides all the information necessary to identify mushrooms in the field in the midcontinental region of Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin: the tallgrass prairies and the western parts of the eastern deciduous forests.

The first edition has been improved in significant ways. The authors have updated scientific names, added photos where there were none and replaced poor photos with better ones, improved the keys, added some species and deleted others, added a section on truffles, and annotated the bibliography. There were originally 224 species; now there are 248. Some of the new photos—125 in all—serve as a second photo for a species, where it is helpful to show details that cannot be viewed in a single photo.

The authors describe each species’ cap, gills, stalk, annulus, and season when it is most likely to be seen as well as such characteristics as edibility and toxicity. In their detailed and lively introduction they discuss the economic and environmental aspects of fungi, basic mushroom biology, nomenclature, edibility and toxicity, and habitats and time of fruiting. Most important are the keys, which lead the dedicated reader to the major groups of fungi included in this guide. The section on mushrooms includes keys to their genera in addition to the species within each family discussed, and each of the subsequent sections has a key to the genera and species except where so few species are discussed that a key is not necessary. The volume also includes a glossary and two bibliographies, one with general and one with technical references.

Through their detailed technical descriptions and captivating color photos the authors convey their passionate fondness for these diverse and colorful organisms, whose mysterious appearances and disappearances have long made them objects of fascination.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Field Guide for Mushroom Hunting and Exploration
This guide is fascinating to me as I am definitely a newcomer to identifying mushrooms.Although throughout my childhood I admired the strange mushrooms in our grass and garden - and then on tree trunks during forest explorations, I never thought to try to identify them! This book is now proudly in my library next to my birding, native plant and wildflower guides. It has the same quality of photographs and descriptions as the best of my field guides! I'll certainly take it on my next field exploration in the Midwest!

5-0 out of 5 stars A first-rate, enthusiastically recommended resource.
Now in a fully revised second edition, Mushrooms and Other Fungi of the Midcontinental United States is a full-color field guide to wild mushrooms and fungi found in the midcontinental region of Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Each of 248 species is illustrated with an excellent color photograph (which almost always shows both the tops and the undersides of sample fungi), and its cap, gills, stalk, and annulus are all described in meticulous detail, along with information with regard to where each species is most likely to be seen, and its edible or toxic characteristics. An additional section devoted to commonly encountered slime molds rounds out this superb reference, written by emeritus professor of biology Donald Huffman. Useful to professional biologists and amateur nature lovers alike, Mushrooms and Other Fungi of the Midcontinental United States is a first-rate, enthusiastically recommended resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource and has shed light on how to deal with mold & fungus in your system.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Fungus Link by Doug Kaufmann
The author's sarcastic tone is annoying. There's a tragic lack of true research backing his opinions. There are many good reasons to follow some of his guidelines, but his single cause of all ills does not stand up to scrutiny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book bad binding
This is a great book and the book itself it deserving of 5 stars. The information that has been presented by Doug Kaufmann is amazing. My fiancée has had health problems for over 10 years now and has gone on the diet. She has not fully recovered but is making great strides toward recovery.I would highly recommend this book if you are not getting the results from what you have been trying. It is also good if you are just looking for alternatives to current medical practices.A warning though. It is a VERY difficult diet and not for the "fad" dieter. But if you want to try to get better without using all the prescription meds then this is a great option. The reason that I did not give it 5 stars is that all of the books that I have seen from this had binding issues. The binging breaks easily and the papers start falling out.Open with caution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fungus & food
I found out some interesting data but found I did not agree with all the links as discussed.Worth reading-but you have to make up your own mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important and excellent book
This small paperback book reprints the Arkham House hardcover edition of 1963, a book that now sells anywhere from $150 to over $400.The book being offered here, the Ballantine Books paperback reprint, has also been selling for large sums, and so the prices offered here are EXTREMELY reasonable.Of course, the text was at times poorly edited by August Derleth (and has been corrected in the magnificent edition of Lovecraft's Complete Poems, edited by S. T. Joshi for Night Shade Books), but this wee book has a special charm all its own in that it reprints the delightful illustrations by Frank Utpatel that were commissioned for the Arkham House edition. The previous reviewer has been extremely helpful in listing the contents of the book. It is a volume that any Lovecraft fan should have!I carried my copy during my one visit to Providence and had it with me when S. T. Joshi led a wee group of us to #10 Barnes Street, the house wherein Lovecraft lived when he wrote his "Fungi from Yuggoth" sonnet cycle.I love this book!Get it at these remarkable prices and you'll be very lucky indeed! ... Product Description

When somebody mentions terrorism attack the attention is immediately concentrated on military type attacks such as bombs, kamikazes or similar kinds and nobody thinks about the possible existence of more sophisticated means such as the use of toxic gas or agents which may be transmitted by contaminated food, water and air and may interest a large number of people. This book intends to put the attention on this problem and to demonstrate how easy it is in particular to contaminate food.

Four different sectors were analysed: bacteria, virus, parasites and pollutants and for each the possible agents and the facilities for creating diseases in many people through contaminated food are described. Also some species of common bacteria like Escherichia coli or Enterococci, present in many foods, may produce toxins, causing diarrhoea in a large number of persons as happened in China in 1991 when 224,000 persons were affected by contaminated ice cream. On the other hand parasites can also be transmitted by uncooked fish and reptile meat.

New diagnostic methods are also illustrated which in comparison to traditional methods permits quick analysis of many samples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A major soporific but indispensable for identification.
This was my secondary text for Mycology 410 in grad school many moons ago (late sixties). Now with a new microscope on the way I thought I'd take a look-see of this, my old reliable companion.I remember in grad school we called this text "the snoozer" because it is a turgid read but is EXTREMELY useful for identifying fungi. One does not read the text cover to cover except the overviews of each class. However, if you have some fungi in need of identification then this book is great.

I understand that now there are many other better books available but for a RELIABLE and solid source I turn to Bessey every time.Yes, the book is quite dated but for most of the common fungi that one comes across this will suffice.

I remember we used to dread it when Dr. Govindu assigned readings from Bessey. But those assignments proved very useful because the text avoids superficiality and demands throughness before coming to a conclusion. Now I realize why the good doctor tortured us with those readings. The book is out of print but if you come across a used copy don't pass it up. ... Read more
