4-0 out of 5 stars FEM Schuam outline
My general idea is positive but it is tend to be more for structural analysis

3-0 out of 5 stars medium content and poor paper quality
These books have been used (as long as I remember) for practicing problem solutions.Sometimes, the content is lacking, either in quantity or quality. This version has OK content. However, the paper has such poor quality that making notes in the margins is impossible. The quality goes for both the paper thickness and the acid content.

I suppose these are not intended to be keepers?Just one-use items?

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless - too bad no Zero Stars.
Worthless. My class used Reddy's latest FEA book, and the teacher was pretty good with his supplemental notes - meaning they went well with Reddy's book. This book is outdated. I couldn't use to help with any of the hw problems. My advice is to "Search Inside", look at it with Google Books, or better yet find one at a bookstore somewhere and compare to your class text before buying. I've used a few Schaum's before and this is by far the worst (least helpful).

Product Description
An essential guide for design engineers who use the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) during the product development process, this book turns the FEA into a productivity tool that will help to avoid costly and potentially dangerous mistakes. During the 50 years of its development, FEA evolved from an exotic analysis method accessible only to specialized analysts into a mainstream engineering tool. Phenomenal progress in computer hardware and operating systems combined with similar progress in computer-aided design made FEA the tool of choice for design engineers, who now use it during the product design process. Many books have been written about FEA, however very little FEA literature takes a middle ground approach and specifically addresses the needs of design engineers who use FEA as an everyday design tool. This book attempts to fill that void by focusing on an understanding of FEA fundamentals, which are explained through simple and intuitive examples that can be used by any engineer. This book also takes a practical approach, characteristic to the attitudes of design engineers, and offers readers an opportunity to try all discussed topics by solving downloadable exercises using either their own FEA software or the commercial FEA software StressCheck®, which is licensed for free to readers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introductory Users Guide to FEA
This is basically a non-mathematical treatment of finite element analysis (FEA) that gives the reader an overall understanding of what it is and can do for them as well as general rules of how to use an FEA application. The book is a kind of a users guide for the novice on how to setup, solve, and interpret the results of a problem using commercial FEA software. The author discusses proper methodology and common pitfalls to avoid. The design or project engineer with mechanical design responsiblities and little previous knowledge of FEA will likely benefit most from reading this book. Experienced users of commercial FEA code(s) or analysts will likely find this text of little practical benefit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review: The Finite Element Method by R.C. Hughes
This book is perfect for students as well for Engineers that would like to understand
the theory of the F.E method, it is not useful so well for an ordinary software
users, because it doesn't have common practice advises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for starters
I bought this book to begin understanding of finite elements theory. the book is good but sure not for starters. The lack of examples and introduction to computer software make this book limited at least for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to learn
I am an international student majored in geology and geophysics. FEM is quite important for me to build a computational model to caculate statical and dynamical problems. This FEM book is recommended by my supervisor and I have read it carefully. The concepts and mathematics are easy to understand for me. good deal~ not too hard, good for new students in this area

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a bible
This book has been a core finite element reference for me for 16 years. The mathematics are actually somewhat mild compared to most of today's finite element literature and many of the other seminal finite element texts. It is completely inappropriate for an undergraduate level text, but it is an excellent graduate level introduction the FEM.It provides a sound basis for advanced topics in non-linear analysis. It does assume that the reader already has a reasonable background in related fields (e.g. continuum mechanics, linear algebra, and real analysis).I have never touched the code that the text references.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, difficultread with software foulup
The text is obviously considered a benchmark for FEA.The date of the first edition causes me to guess that it was among the first serious texts in the subject. For that reason, the book is worth the some of the price. But, detractors reduce the worth...

Two major items detract from the usefulness of the text:
1. It is written for a mathematician. So, reading is a little rough for those who are learning the notation as they read the book.
2. The text spends pages describing examples using and an appendix providing user information for software that is missing from the reprint. This subtracts from the value, even if the code is a source in FORTRAN, because excellent examples of FEA implementations are missing.

It turns out that the source code and a compiled executable for DLEARN is available on the web. However, you have to know where and how to search.[...] ... Read more

Product Description
Designing structures using composite materials poses unique challenges due especially to the need for concurrent design of both material and structure. Students are faced with two options: textbooks that teach the theory of advanced mechanics of composites, but lack computational examples of advanced analysis; and books on finite element analysis that may or may not demonstrate very limited applications to composites. But now there is third option that makes the other two obsolete: Ever J. Barbero's Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials.

By layering detailed theoretical and conceptual discussions with fully developed examples, this text supplies the missing link between theory and implementation. In-depth discussions cover all of the major aspects of advanced analysis, including three-dimensional effects, viscoelasticity, edge effects, elastic instability, damage, and delamination. More than 50 complete examples using mainly ANSYS™, but also including some use of MATLAB®, demonstrate how to use the concepts to formulate and execute finite element analyses and how to interpret the results in engineering terms. Additionally, the source code for each example is available for download online.

Cementing applied computational and analytical experience to a firm foundation of basic concepts and theory, Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials offers a modern, practical, and versatile classroom tool for today's engineering classroom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Composite Analysis
For someone who wishes to do FEA analysis of composite and sandwich structures, I have not seen a better book. Not only is the theory and process for formulating the FEA of specific problems addressed, but there are a multitude of pages devoted entirely to the actual ANSYS APDL language and code used for example problems. As an engineer in the high performance composites industry, this text serves as one of the better tools I have come across, and coupled with Zenkerts Sandwich texts, really gives me the library to confidently design high end products.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
Dr. Barbero new book is probably the best book available for those, with some knowledge about composite materials, aiming to perform advanced numerical simulations of composite structures. It covers all main topics related to the simulation of these materials, from its mechanical characterization (either using an analytical approach, either using a homogenization method) to some of their most complex failure modes, such as delamination.

The book not only provides the theory required for simulating composite structures, but it is also full of examples in which the theory exposed is applied using a finite element code (ANSYS). This is one of the most compelling features of this book. Although having the examples particularized for ANSYS can seem as a drawback, they are so wisely commented that their implementation in any other finite element code becomes an easy task.

Summarizing, this is a must have book for all those engineers and researchers interested in the advance simulation of composite materials, that can be used as an introductory book as well as a consultation reference. A perfect complement to Barbero's first book: Introduction to Composite Materials Design (Materials Science & Engineering Series)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The book contains interesting topics regarding the mechanics of composite structures. It is a useful tool for specialists involved in the framework of composite, as well as for students which need to practise with the main aspect of composite structures. The book analyzes in detail different aspects of composites such as Viscoelasticity, Bucking, Free Edge Stresses, Micromechanics, Damage mechanics, Delamination, ect., introducing examples and applications very easy to understand. All the subjects of the book are presented in detail from theoretical point of view introducing new concepts currently analyzed in the research. Moreover, very useful numerical examples based commercial programs to explain typical problems of composite structures are reported.
I really suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
The new book by Professor Ever J. Barbero, is a very useful additionto the library of any specialist or student in the area of Composites. It contains in 10 Chapters (Mechanics of Orthotropic Materials; Introduction to the Finite Element Method; Elasticity and Strength ofLaminates; Buckling; Free Edge stresses; Computational Micromechanics; Viscoelasticity; Damage mechanics; Damage Model for Fiber Reinforced Composites; Delaminations) very well organized information, enriched by the author's experience in teaching and research. The formulation for each subject is presented together with useful information on numerical implementation, and a fair number of examples and proposed problems. The book is excellent both for course reading or self study.Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and useful
The book is an excellent text of composite materials analysis for graduate students and practising engineers. After an initial introduction to stress analysis and to finite element method the chapters introduce to the reader how to model composites with FE codes.

Each chapter is about different aspects or mechanisms that appear in composites (buckling, laminates, failure criteria, delamination, damage, micromechanics, etc.). The text mixes the theory with very useful examples. The examples permit to assimilate concepts (for the student). Also the examples become an perfect guideline to solve actual problems (for the engineer or the professional).

Therefore, the text provides a practical framework that allow the reader to improve and learn in several aspects: FE modelling, composites, ... and, also, to learn how to implement engineering problems in ANSYS and MatLab.The book is completed with the facilities and software that the author have available in the web site of the book [...] with source code of examples, solutions of the problems for instructor's, and videos to help the reader to implement the examples in ANSYS whit the Graphic Interface User. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good but....
The book is not bad and does an ok job on how to use the GUI.What it really needs to do is tech how to develop batch files. This is more useful, allows a great degree of freedom, and helps to keep the garbage in garbage out mantra from being applied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro
This is a good book for the basics in the FE method. It does teach how to use Ansys as well but of course having a tutorial dedicated to the program itself is always a better option.
If an introduction is what you need then this book is for you, if not there are many titles out dedicated to this topic though I really recommend this book to anyone trying to learn on their own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't follow through
This book should be great. It has great potential but it does not deliver. It tries to be half theory and half practical and does neither very well. The theory is confusing and not presented well or logically. The practical Ansys tutorials are certainly useful if you are trying to learn Ansys (and if you don't have access to any other tutorials then this book is defintely worth getting), however, there is no attempt to explain what the tutorial is trying to achieve or what it is doing. With a little more thought and organisation this could have been a good book. In its current form I would not reccomend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever!!!
We are at chapter 13 now and I now know that the book do not provide good fundamentals nor details to understand what FEA is all about. But don't expect to understand it without any other help. Choppy steps for the solution in the examples! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to start learning FEA, BUT...
This book starts FEA from the very scratch. It is good for an undergraduate course and can be used as a quick review for graduate level. The chapters are very well organized. Every single procedures are illustrated clearly followed by good examples. There are several software package including ANSYS and MATLAB at the end of the book with explanation on how to do some of the chapter exercises and projects. The book level goes as far as to teach you how to optimize a design like a torque arm structure using FAE (that's what you see on the cover page). As a student who have read each single pages and lines of this book and did the exercises, I have found several typos which could be misleading if I was not familiar with concepts. All in all, the contents are good, BUT, BUT, BUT it is very expensive for what you get (around 90$) AND it is VERY HARD to use. They have printed this 420 pages book on very thin papers (like onion skin) which makes it extremely hard to use. There is also no index at the end. Thanks to the authors for the good job. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Solutions Needed
Although the content is there, there are no worked examples or a way to truly test your understanding. This may just be me but the text did not relate well to the analytical problems. However, if there is anyone who has come across a solutions book to accompany this text please let me know (rickwfsc@hotmail.com). I believe there was one for the 3rd addition but that is near impossible to obtain.

2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate at best
I bought this book for an introduction Finite Element class. The organization and notation of symbols of the book was very odd, and therefore made it hard to read.Rather than talking about the theory first, the authors first state the equations, and then talk about "remarks" on the equations and underlying theory. The book contains very easy and introductory examples and problems, not practical examples that would help in the computer implementation of finite elements. For example, the book does not contain any example on how to computer the stresses and strains from interconnected finite elements (which would help greatly when you want to write your own finite element program).Overall, a very confusing and brief presentation of the topics.I would not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars finite element analysis
this book is for those who have already acquire a working commercial version of finite element analysis program.it explains the mathematical formula instead of giving u the computer algorithm.it's almost impossible to write your own software so this book is enough to explain the concept of finite element.for example, it teaches u to spread a point load over several nodes because of a singularity problem, things that u have to know using the finite element software.for those who don't have a commerical version of finite element program, this book recommend visualfea which u can download from intuition.com.or u can buy it online from wiley.com at $35 usd.it furthur leads u to abaqus cae which is even a better finite element which is very expensive.for those who can't afford it, a student version of abaqus is available for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good FEA book
I've not read many FEA books but this one was suggested to me by a coworker. It's written for the design analyst but I think it should be required reading for engineering managers and design engineers. It really brings to light the world of "Accurate and Correct" FEA but it's written such that anyone with basic engineering skills can understand it.If you're a budding analyst, this is a must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Building a better product with finite element analysis
The book was in very good shape and was received in a very timely manner. Thanks

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, badly presented
This is an OK book on FEA that should be an excellent book! There is great information in here, but it is not presented in a logical or organised manner. If you want to get the information from this book you have to read it from cover to cover several times. Even if you are familiar with the book it is hard to find the information that you know is in there!
It is definitely a book for beginners or perhaps managers who don't directly do FEA. For a practising analyst or engineer it is probably of limited use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This book is a must have for every engineer who is doing, or wants to do, Finite Element Analysis. It is written clearly with great examples. The authors should be congratulated for writing such an extensive and useful book.Nice to see a book like this grounded in reality vs. only the theoretical.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for Managers
If you are an engineer, skip it and do real work.It is general, basic, and lacks real knowledge. This is not a reference book, nor is it a teaching book. However, if you are an engineering manager overseeing a group conducing FEA analysis, this book will help you.It is full of wonderful insight, such as:"FEA can help build a better, more robust product".These blinding flashes of the obvious will keep most real engineers at arm's length. If I had a chance to do it again, I would not purchase this book. ... Product Description
The primary goal of Introduction to Finite Element Analysis Using SolidWorks Simulation is to introduce the aspects of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) that are important to engineers and designers. Theoretical aspects of Finite Element Analysis are also introduced as they are needed to help better understand the operation.

The primary emphasis of the text is placed on the practical concepts and procedures needed to use SolidWorks Simulation in performing Linear Static Stress Analysis and basic Model Analysis. This text covers SolidWorks Simulation and the lessons proceed in a pedagogical fashion to guide you from constructing basic truss elements to generating three-dimensional solid elements from solid models. This text takes a hands-on, exercise-intensive approach to all the important Finite Element Analysis techniques and concepts.

This textbook contains a series of thirteen tutorial style lessons designed to introduce beginning FEA users to SolidWorks Simulation. The basic premise of this book is that the more designs you create using SolidWorks Simulation, the better you learn the software. Bonet and Wood have done an excellent job with this book. After motivating what they are trying to do with simple examples of nonlinear mechanics, they move into some basic vector and tensor math. Summation signs are explicitly used, so if you are new to continuum mechanics you don't have to try to learn the ins and outs of the seemingly bizarre notation at the same time as the fundamental concepts (although you really should learn it at some point in time). Once the math is set up, Bonet and Wood move into finite kinematics, the force balance, material constitutive models, and finally, getting all of the above set up in an actual computer code (which is available for download) to do some FEA.

The strong point of the book is how patient the authors are with you. I found the derivations to be very lucid, with most, if not all, of the important steps shown. Bonet and Wood always tie things back to linearizing the nonlinear problem in anticipation for putting it on the computer. The Newton-Raphson procedure, and its various improvements (line search, etc.) are very nicely explained, so it is clear not just what and why but how we go about solving nonlinear mechanics problems. I highly recommend this book for starting to learn continuum mechanics and one way of solving its problems on the computer.

Nota bene: the emphasis is on large-deformation elasticity, which is a good, relatively simple place to start in continuum mechanics. The material models are all eventually taken as isotropic (which is more than just extra constants, as another reviewer pointed out, since then you must use the exponential map). Plasticity is briefly covered, but only the basic J2 model with hardening. Search elsewhere (Simo and Hughes, or Dunne and Petrinic) if you are interested in computational plasticity. Maybe (and hopefully) in the next edition Bonet and Wood will get to those topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Bonet and Wood have written an excellent book. I thank them for
writing such a wonderful book. Every student who wants to learn nonlinear mechanics should have this book. I am saying this because
I am also a student and I know what a student expects from a book.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice introduction to nonlinear elasticity
The book is a nice pedagogic introduction to nonlinear elasticity. It lays out the principles clearly supported with good examples, something you won`t be able to find in many other books.
Some previous reviews criticizes the book for not covering anisotropy or plasticity, but the book is simply intended to cover the principles of large deformation elasticity. From that point of view, anisotropy is a case where you have the same formulas but more constants. And plasticity, as the name reveals, is NOT elasticity. There are plenty of plasticity models out there and interested reader should find the proper source for those. Unlike what a previous reviewer says, hyperelasticity is NOT "exceedengly simple", and is a fairly general form of elasticity. It is widely used in many engineering materials and covered in detail in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book and a gentle introduction to solid mechanics
Good book and gentle introduction to computational and theoretical aspects of nonlinear solid mechanics with large deformation. I downloaded also the code mentioned, and it isgreat fun playing with it. ... Read more

Product Description
Taking an engineering rather than a mathematical bias, this comprehensive book details the fundamentals of non-linear finite element analysis. The author explains how non-linear techniques can be used to solve practical problems. The main ideas of geometric non-linearity, continuum mechanics, plasticity, element technology and stability theory are explored in detail. The reader is also introduced to the recent research in this developing field. The computer programs in the text are available on the Internet. These useful finite element computer programs illustrate many of the ideas considered in the book. The logic can also be followed without these finer details since these computer programs and subroutines are also represented by examples and flowcharts. The second volume will address advanced topics such as large strains and large rotations, plasticity with a range of yield criteria and hardening rules, stability theory and advanced solution procedures including branch-switching techniques, contact and friction, and non-linear dynamics. It will also include examples from an up-dated non-linear finite element computer program incorporating the advanced solution procedures. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - fills a long standing gap
I feel the book really fills a long standing gap in this field, since nonlinear analysis (especially geometric nonlinear analysis) is always treated slightly ambiguously by other authors. The book is extremely clear and consistent in its manner of explanation. However, at some places, theauthor has used excessive mathematical derivations which may not contributeso much to understanding. ... Read more

Product Description
Although finite element courses have become more popular in the undergraduate and graduate engineering, science, and applied mathematics curricula, there are very few introductory textbooks geared toward students accustomed to using computers for everyday assignments and research. "An Introduction to Linear and Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis" fills this gap, offering a concise, integrated presentation of methods, applications, computational software tools, and hands-on programming projects.Suitable for junior/senior undergraduate and first-year graduate courses, the book is aimed at students from a variety of disciplines: engineering, physics, geophysics, and applied mathematics.

Unlike existing texts designed with specific applications to a particular field of mechanical, civil, or chemical engineering, the emphasis here is on interdisciplinary applications.One- and two-dimensional linear and nonlinear initial/boundary value problems are solved using finite element, Newton's, and conjugate gradient methods.Mathematical theory is kept to a minimum, making the text accessible to students with varied backgrounds.

* Minimal prerequisites: a course in calculus of several variables, differential equations and linear algebra, as well as some knowledge of computers

Primarily a classroom resource, the book may also be used as a self-study reference for researchers and practitioners who need a quick introduction to finite element methods. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on FEM I know about
This book gives an excellent presentation of the mathematics behind the FEM that can also be understood by engineers. A very strong point is the intensive discussion of errors, not only the discretization error but all possible errors that might occur during the complete idealization process.

By practical reasons, the theory presented is mostly limited to two-dimensional problems but results can easily transferred to 3-dimensional problems.

Although the book is on theory, it has been of extremely practical value to me. There is nothing more practical than a good theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is "the bible" for p-FEM
This book is essential for people who want to understand the p-finite element method. The authors are pioneers in the field, and their writing is excellent. What more could you ask for?

4-0 out of 5 stars The Why of FEM
Unlike most other books on the market this book focuses on the strong analytical and mathematical underpinnings of the FEM. Thus, the advanced reader is left with a deep understanding of the method and its modernextensions. There is a good blend of applications too! ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents the theory and computer implementations of the finite element method as applied to nonlinear problems of heat transfer and similar field problems, fluid mechanics (flows of incompressible fluids), and solid mechanics (elasticity, beams and plates). Both geometric as well as material nonlinearities are considered, and static and transient (i.e.: time-dependent) responses are studied.Although there exist a number of books on nonlinear finite elements that serve as good references for engineers who are familiar with the subject and wish to learn advanced topics or the latest developments, there is currently no book which is suitable as a textbook for a first course on nonlinear finite element analysis. This book fills the void in the market, providing a clear understanding of the concepts of nonlinear finite element analyses through detailed theoretical formulations and computer implementation steps, examples and exercises. In addition, the book serves as a prelude to more advanced books on the subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars classic
There is this one thing I know. When you are learning from a superior intelligence you can find that out pretty quick. My greed for calculus and math finds an apt expression here. The way he presents non linear finite elements is unparalled.

There is another thing I have learnt. The people who can explain things clearly, are the ONLY ones who know it. And they are not too many, when it comes to horribly complicated problems, besides. Math cuts out a lot of verbiage, in understanding a problem. A simple math problem when described in words could go on and on and on. If you have a apetite for calculus and a craving for numerical analysis, you would be a poorer man if you didnt have this book. If you dont, well you are not good enough to pick up finite elements anyhow, forget about non linear analysis.

One small note. This is just pertinent to me. I dont write code in fortran so parts of the book were not of much use to me. But the concept is laid out very well. I would have loved it if the code was in C++. But its okay. If I were to just copy code, that would be shabby learning anyhow. So it works out fine. ... Read more
