Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals. Edgar Wallace was born in Yarmouth, Greenwich, Norfolk. His biological parents were actors Richard Horatio Edgar (who never knew of his existence) and Mary Jane "Polly" Richards, nee Blair. Known as Richard Freeman, Edgar had a happy childhood, forming an especially close bond with 20-year-old Clara Freeman who became like a second mother to him. His foster-father George Freeman was an honourable and kind man and determined to ensure Richard received a good education. I read the book in German long time ago and did that many times. Great story when you are the type of reader who enjoys fine criminal and subtle love stories combined and not only the commercial bloody slaugthering stuff you see and read nowadays (I am 37). This book contains tiresome characters in an anti-catholic setting.For a Wilkie Collins book, it is absolutely dreadful.Still, it is a Collins book, so at least it is well written.A man and woman marry.A Jesuit,out to get the man's property, breaks up the marriage and succeeds inmaking everyone miserable, including the reader. My only gripe with this book is that it is in paperback.You will want to own it in hardcover to savor over the years with the children in your life--or just by yourself.No one can match the subtlety and humor of L. Leslie Brooke's illustrations. Brooke himself wrote (he is a very sophisticated and funny writer! the Johnny Crow series--buy them all, there are 3. All Brooke's illustrated books are great treats for the eyes as well as the ears.If you like Brooke's pictures look for his version of The Three Little Pigs (marvelously funny!) in The Golden Goose Book, which is also a nursery rhyme book and contains both black and white and color pictures. Another such book is Ring O' Roses, a fairy tale book with both colored and black and white pictures by Brooke in The House in the Wood. ... Read more

The Fun of Story Telling and Mischief!
My daughter loves this book when I read it to her at bedtime; it has many types of colorful animal characters that children generally find amusing.

There is a new neighbor in the Green Forest, Prickly Porky the Porcupine. His reoccurring mischievous prank takes center stage in this book. His friends, Peter Rabbit, Unc' Billy Possum and Jimmy Skunk are involved in his antics too.

One day Peter Rabbit happens to see a strange thing which scares him quite a deal, he unknowingly tells the rest of the forest of the thing he saw, and this begins a long series of events that ends up humiliating some of the most hated residents of the forest. For Peter eventually learns the truth of what scared him so, and together with his friends they start scaring known predators such as Reddy Fox, Granny Fox and Ole Man Coyote. What is scaring them? - Why it is none other than Prickly Porky in disguise.

Fans of Burgess' classic series of children's books will no doubt love this edition in his series. It teaches the same naturalistic morals involving Mother Nature that he is famous for. I hope you give the book a try.

(Helen) Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English author and illustrator, botanist, and conservationist, born in Kensington, London best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit. Educated at home by a succession of governesses, she had little opportunity to mix with other children. Potter had frogs and newts, and even a pet bat. The basis of her many projects and stories were the small animals that she smuggled into the house or observed during family holidays in Scotland and the Lake District. She was encouraged to publish her story, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902), but she struggled to find a publisher until it was accepted when she was 36, by Frederick Warne & Co. The small book and her following works were extremely well received and she gained an independent income from the sales. Potter eventually wrote 23 books. A classic enduring tale
An all too familiar tale that any child can relate to: mother makes kids dress up nice for company, kids get dirty and are then made to stay in their room. However, the tale isn't told in such a dry sense. Quite the opposite actually, and done in such a short amount of words that the reader gets the feeling that no words are wasted (well, too the adult reader anyway). In other words, the writing is outstanding, to say the least.

This story introduces many animal characters that I'm sure your son or daughter will love. Although not a lot is said about these characters in great detail, the innocent sense of childhood serenity is priceless in this classic tale that has endured for many years.

Charmingly illustrated tale of three naughty kittens
For some reason, I missed out on Beatrix Potter as a child so I rectified that omission by searching for the original and authorized editions of her books, illustrated by her own hand.My two favorites concern the adventures of Tom Kitten and his two sisters, Mittens and Moppet:"They had dear little fur coats of their own; and they tumbled about the doorstep and played in the dust."

Unfortunately, their mother, Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit (we never meet their father), interrupts the kittens' dusty idyll to wash and dress them because she is expecting company for tea.Tom Kitten has put on quite a bit of weight since the last time he wore his suit, and he bursts all of his buttons.After his mum sews them back on, she turns her three progeny out into the garden and admonishes them to stay clean.

Well, you can imagine how that turned out.Not only did they lose their mittens, they lost Everything.Mum had to lock them into their bedroom and inform her guests that her children had the measles (not precisely the truth.)

If you would like to pursue the further adventures of Tom Kitten, Mittens, and Moppet, read The Tale of Samuel Whiskers or The Roly-Poly Pudding (Potter 23 Tales).

'The Tale Of Tom Kitten' sees Beatrix Potter at her most fey.Three young kittens muck about in the garden, tormenting their neighbouring creatures, and generally being boisterous-but-nice kids.Their class-conscious mother (very few fathers in Potter's world) is having relatives around for tea, and gives her children unwelcome baths and brushings down, before making them wear the most appallingly naff Sundaywear.Unfortunately, Tom's been eating one too many pork pies, and bursts out of his pale blue two-piece, looking rather seedy.

The charm of this story lies in the infectious playfulness of the children, their universally-understandable indifference to their elders' desire for 'respectability', and the quaint evocation of an Edwardian farmstead.

The Tale of Tom Kitten
The Tale of Tom Kitten is Beatrix Potter at her best. It is certainly one of our family favorites. This is the story of three kittens all dressed in their best clothes and set out to play. They struggle to keep their clotheson only to lose them. They meet three ducks along the way who waddle offwith the poorly fitted clothes. When the kittens return home their mothersends them upstairs while she hosts a tea party. Of course they cause aruckus disturbing the "dignity and repose" of the party. The bookends with the ducks still searching for the clothes at the bottom of apond. What makes Beatrix Potter so wonderful is her delightful vocablarythat stretches a childs intellect. There is a mutual respect between Potterand the reader. Having drawn and painted animals and plant life since achild she is a master of anthropomorphisim, the giving of human qualitiesto animals or objects. Her delicate watercolors are perfectly suited to the playfullness of the story. This is a classic that should be a part ofevery child's library. ... Read more

They had two sons and one daughter: Felix Doubleday (adopted), Nelson Doubleday (1889-1949) and Dorothy Doubleday. Some of her papers (1914-1918) are in the Frank N. Doubleday and Nelson Doubleday Collection at the Princeton University Library. There is a Neltje Blanchan Literary Award given by the Wyoming Arts Council, which is given annually to "a writer whose work, in any genre, is inspired by nature". Waste for everyone
Firstly, the smug "you get what you pay for" crowd can go sip tea with your pinkies out. I understand that this is a free version of a book, converted by volunteers, but that doesn't mean it HAS to be inferior to what it COULD be. If you believe your volunteer work can be substandard just because you're donating your time, maybe you should stick with paid work.

The "community of volunteers" that "converted (this book) from its physical edition to the digital format" not only wasted their time by producing the Kindle version of this book, they have managed to waste the time of everyone who bothers to download this version. It is beyond me why anyone thinks it's worthwhile to publish only the text of a book that relies heavily on illustrations or photographs.Rather than continue to post these idiotic, frustrating versions of "FREE" illustrated books (minus the pictures) for the Kindle, it would be much better for Amazon to simply post a page that says, "Don't bother downloading this if you would like to see the images described by the text."

If you're interested, you can find the illustrations from this book in the HTLM .zip at Project Gutenberg. While I appreciate the efforts of the "community of volunteers", I wish they would quit posting books for the Kindle until it has been properly and fully converted -- including images -- in the form the author intended.

I can't help but wonder how much Amazon has to do with publishing, or at least not discouraging, Kindle books like this (with necessary images not included.) They love to shout about the availability of "free books" in their Kindle ads, and allowing junk like this definitely adds to the number of free books.
