Great Book
I really love amazon; I got the book in only 2 days, just in time for me to read it for my Cultural Anthropology class. The book itself is very interesting and not only does it give you information on anthropology, it also contains stories from 2 anthropologist which makes it all the more interesting and easy to understand.

Short, yet pretty comprehensive intro
I read this book (along with other selected readings) for a beginning anthropology course at my school. The students in my class seem to agree that it is a good book because although it is thought provoking it doesn't read like a text book. The writing style is very clear yet still scholarly. I would recommend having a copy of this book if you are taking any anthropology course because its a handy reference!

Excellent Introduction
This has proven to be both a very interesting introduction and nothing like what I expected.It seems that a great many of academic fields are confined to the ivory tower.This book emphasizes ethnographic field work.I would recommend to anyone interesting in learning more about anthropology.

My only criticism:I wish the authors had focused more on the distinctions between the different subfields of anthropology.It would have been nice to have a clearer understanding of how Social/Cultural Anthropology differs from, say, physical anthropology.

All in all, very engaging and interesting read.

using this for undergrads
After disheartening forays into text books and frustration at readers that are either too thematic or otherwise not quite right for a quick orientation in the discipline, I decided to check this out.This is about as perfect a scene-setter as I could ask for for either an intro course or any course that is likely to attract students who do not have an anthropological background.It's pocket-sized, it's affordable, it's readable, and it's SMART.It coverstheoretical debates in a straight-forward and understandable way that shows why anyone should care about evolution vs. diffusion (to name one example).This little book as does about a good a job as any at showing how (and why) anthropologists and others use the word "post-modernity" (pg 69). The field examples are well chosen and engaging. The chapters are of a length and written in a style students are likely to read.Even better, the authors give enough tantalizing detail that I suspect it will inspire students to read MORE.

The first time I laid my hands on this little pocket size book I could not put it away until I drained out all its information. This book really gave a very concise idea about anthropology and its subfields. The authors provided valuable first hand examples about their experiences as anthropologists and ethnographers. Good Intro Book
A well written intro book for Cultural Anthropology. I am glad I found it on here and for such a great price!

Pointless Drivel
This book was required for my Intro-level Cultural Anthropology class. Typical to a lot of textbooks from this publisher, it rambles on and on about the same thing, offering little in the way of genuine insight into the subject it is supposed to be presenting. It's simply not a very readable book.

Given 2 stars because I was able to get it here for a fair bit less than I would have had to pay at the local bookstore.

Great Buy and a Good Read for a college required text
This book is a good read for anyone interested in anthropology. It was a required text for my intro to anthropology class but I really enjoyed reading it. It was a great buy and at a huge discount compared to what the college bookstore was charging!

good text book
I bought this book for a class.I thought the book would be terribly dry as most text books are, but this one supprised me.I actually tried to read the entire book (instead of skimming like I usually do with a text book) because everything in it was very interesting.I also like the way it is set up with the stories in inserted boxes, and the key words highlighted and defined in the paragraph and also at the bottom of the page.

Cultural Anthropology, 11th edition
This book is straightforward and easy to understand. Chapters are organized and vocabulary and main topics are summarized at the end of the book; sometimes I'd just read these parts and I would understand the entire chapter.

Education made affordable
My school bookstore wanted $95 for this text but I was able to get it for $5 here. Upon receipt (which was sooner than expected) I did a quick inspection and found the quality to be more than adequate as the book had the original, unopened discs. I couldn't be happier.

Just a book for class.
I did get a used book for a class.It is a great buy, I would've paid $148 for a new one at school, but I asked the teacher and he said this older edition would be fine, so I saved myself a ton of money.The book is in good condition, too.

Great read
Even though I needed this book for a class it was very interesting. Glad that my instructor chose it.It does not focus on one group of people, it shares information about a large number of various cultures across the world.

Curtral Anthropology in a Detailed Sense
I wouldn't have normally purchased this book if it wasn't for a course requirement. From chapter one all the way to the end, the authors take the reader or student through a detailed interface of what life is like experienced in other cultures. It touches upon the four different career interests in cultural anthropology as well. A time consuming read, but loaded with useful information for in and out of the class room.

Excellent materials, great selection
First off, I'd like to agree with the first reviewer. This is an excellent compilation that stands by itself (although, for an intro class, it definitely requires a "discipline-oriented" text book like Kottak as a guiding force).Iwould recommend this book highly to my fellow anthros and to general readers alike. What follows is a brief summary of some of my favorite articles in the collection. The selections are all short and well-written, they make interesting and useful points and convey the complexity and utility of anthropology very, very well.

I've been waiting a long time to see Peggy McIntosh's wonderful essay on "White Privilege" in print somewhere.I had the distinct pleasure of hearing her give an oral version of the same talk a number of years ago and am very very pleased to see it published here for the benefit of students.The book is worth the price for that article alone.

However, this is not the only gem in this collection.Phillipe Bourgois' work on crack dealers is introduced here as is Gerald Murray's work on wood farming as a means to encourage re-forestation programs in Haiti.There are also classics such as Richard Lee's story of the !Kung San insulting of his gift of a Christmas ox ("Eating Christmas in the Kalahari") and Laura Bohannon's failure to get Tiv elders to see Hamlet as a story about incest, revenge and justice.Jared Diamond's revisionist view of the advent of agriculture is also here (perhaps an antidote for his more recent "Guns, Germs and Steel" though undoutedly similar in style).

Other personal favorites of mine include Eugene Cooper's discussion of Chinese table manners (also a must for people who want to teach a course on the anthropology of food), Richard Reed's examination of the tension between environmentalists and indigenous communities in Paraguay, Joan Cassels' excellent analysis of surgery as a male-gendered medical speciality and Paul Farmer's and Arthur Kleinman's thoughtful peice on suffering and AIDS in Haiti.

Incidentally, I would thoroughly recommend anything by Paul Farmer to readers interested in social medicine.His scholarship and humanity are both quite phenomenal and totally justify the attention he has recieved due to the MacArthur fellowship.

I only have a couple of quibbles with this book and even these are not so much criticisms as comments for the unwary:Jennifer Laab's peice on corporate anthropologists seems to have been written for a corporate audience as a selling point for anthropology.As such it plays up the notion of anthropologists as service providers for corporate interests in a way which is a little frown-inducing for an academician such as myself.Not because I don't approve of anthropology in the private sector, but because the peice itself seems to argue that anthropology is merely a set of techniques that can be workshopped (like team-building exercises)to busy executives for the greater good of the company.Again, this is a VERY worthwhile point to debate, but not one that easily stands without comment.Secondly, the article by Wade Davis (he of "Serpent and the Rainbow" fame), while again discussion-worthy, seems a little superficial, dated in language and probably replaceable (Robert Voeks'recently-published "Sacred Leaves of Candomble" is one alternative that springs to mind).Lastly, I would like to plead for the inclusion of a selection on tatooing or bodily adornment of some sort in any future editions. This is a topic of enduring interest among students and would definitely be an asset to such a nicely-balanced and valuable collection.

Cultural Anthropology
This book has insight to many unqiue culturals from non human to human. I love how deep Barbara Miller goes to give detail to many of the explores stories with comparison to other previsited places and the differences on how these places have changed over the years. It's easy to understand and I enjoyed reading it. Plenty of pictures and examples.

Pages Missing
At first it seemed all was well. The book appeared to be in good condition. Transaction was smooth and easy. I got half way through my course and realized that 2 pages had been torn out. One of them Page 376 was specific to my assignment. Luckily I was able to have a classmate scan the page and email it to me. The other page that was missing was part of my reading assignment. It was very disappointing. I learned my lesson about buying used.

I attend Ashford online. And this is the book I needed for a class.
Please remember you don't have to buy the books from Ashford it will break you. A lot of the books will say Ashford addition and have a number such as (7th ed) when in fact you can get the (6th ed) is word for word except for the number, no Ashford name on the cover and you will save anywhere from 75-95% of the coast if you buy them on Amazon I have even got one here for 50 cents and the bookstore at Ashford wanted $97.00. Please check first as we all knows books can kill the wallet.

Learn ethnography by doing ethnography.
This ethnography book does not read like a textbook, and it is not intended to be one.Instead, it is a project manual, briefly outlining five ethnographic assignments, and then including a number of papers from various students as examples.

The book is deliberately low on theory, and approaches ethnography from a more postmodern point of view, encouraging students to be reflexive and to write of their personal experiences and emotions.At the same time, the author states the importance of separating data from analysis, to help the ethnographer be more objective.The analysis of the data, where the ethnographer interprets the motives and emotions, is important but separate.He also gives further readings at the end of each assignment, knowing that this book does not go into much depth in either theory or practice.

The whole purpose of this book is teach ethnography by doing ethnography.The first three assignments are short and are designed to get the inexperienced student started in ethnography.The project descriptions are only about two pages long, and then each assignment has several example papers.The first is the map and description of a block, the second is a retrospective assignment on private language, and the third assignment is to study body language.All of these assignments help to sharpen the eye of the student in areas where they need to be observant.

The final two assignments are much bigger.One is a study on ritual, and the final assignment Kutsche calls "The Big Ethnography."This project is designed to last about a month.The final 100 pages of the book are devoted to eight exemplary student ethnographies.

Although the book was enjoyable to read, its strength really would come from actually doing the assignments, and if a class were not willing to do so, I think another book would be more appropriate.It is designed for an introductory class in ethnography, and is not written to be a reference for a field ethnographer, or for an advanced ethnography student.

In general I found the book somewhat refreshing in that it had short descriptions of the assignments, and then lots of case studies.For an introductory class in ethnography, it could be a good book if the professor was willing to have the students go through the assignments.But I would recommend the professor read the book through first before deciding to use it as a project manual. ... Exactly as expected
The book came on time and in the condition I expected. I purchased new, so it was wrapped in plastic and included a sealed DVD, which I needed (I purchased new because I couldn't find and used copies that could verify the DVD was included for a good price). This is an excellent textbook for anyone who enjoys learning about cultural anthropology. The combination of authors views and experiences make it a well-rounded read. It's not written so no one can understand the content as well. The content has been simplified so most college students can understand and appreciate it. This is one I'll keep, even after my class is over.
