Product Description
This book has over 1100 full color photos.

Crustaceans form a group of marine animals the author is especially acquainted to since many years. Therefore it was his great challenge to present for the first time in literature a field guide perfectly illustrated with species of Crustacea from all the world's seas. And to introduce the behaviour and abilities of those absolutely charming critters comprehensively and in detail in fascinating stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the must-have guide
This is the go-to guide for identification of crustacea. It would be nice to see it broken up into Pacific and Atlantic species.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless to anyone in the eastern US; probably elsewhere
Apparently, my eternal quest to find a decent guide to western Atlantic crustaceans will remain just that, eternal! The author must be quite impressed with it as his photo credits are written in a bigger font than the names of the animals! While these pictures are wonderful, and the descriptions provide a fair amount of information, glaring omissions are the rule rather than the exception. For instance, the three most important and common commercial shrimp in the southeastern US, , and < Litopenaeus setiferus>, are not mentioned anywhere in the text!Nor is , the ubiquitous blue crab, and most of the other Portunid crabs of the US (note: is mentioned in a small blurb, though not described).None of the common hermit crabs, lady crabs or purse crabs of the western Atlantic is listed.Forget about anything that may be most common in brackish settings such as the marsh crabs, shore crabs or mud crabs! is listed, but a juvenile is shown in the photo! There are only two species of fiddler and box crabs listed and only three spider/arrow crabs.Even Palaemonetes vulgaris, the grass shrimp that is so common I've found them in the pockets of my bathing suit, is omitted.Don't think you will be able to use this as a key either. There is nothing that compares species that might be confused.I cannot imagine who this book was intended for, but it is useless to anyone, scientist or layperson, in the eastern US.I am not an expert on Indo-Pacific, eastern Atlantic or Pacific forms, but I would imagine the same for those regions; the book is not that big!If you need a guide to the Crustacea of the US, you will have to stick with Ruppert and Fox's "Seashore Animals of the Southeast", though it is far from comprehensive; the FAO Marine Resources guides, limited to commercial species; or the scientific literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Creepie-Crawlies
This is an incredible achievement - stunning photographs of shrimps, crabs and 'prawns' from all over the world - more than any diver could hope to see in a lifetime. The quality of the reproductions and the wealth of biological information makes this a must-have book for anyone who likes to see more than just a few coloured fish when they dive. It is particularly accessible to the non-scientist and I can't imagine anyone with an interest in marine life reading this and not learning something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crustacea Guide Of The World
Crustacea Guide Of The World, althought written for the lay "marine biologist" is none-the-less scientifically correct. The book is divided into two sections, Atlantic decapods and Pacific decapods, givingthe reader the ability to more acurately and quickly identify the animal ofinterest.Included within the text are short stories illuminatinginteresting behaviors of decapods.Paired with a photograph of each animalthe author has provided, along with a concise description, the geographicaldistribution. For anyone interested in marine life I highly recommend thisbook to be added to their library. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Invertebrate Zoology deals with the animals that have no backbones, including the shrimps, crabs, sponges, worms, snails and squids. This book deals specifically with the invertebrates that spend all or part of their lifecycle in a freshwater environment. (As is usual and as in the previous edition, aquatic insects are excluded due to their vast numbers.) The invertebrate species far outnumber the vertebrate species, and a through understanding of aquatic invertebrate zoology is essential to understanding the community structure of freshwater environments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book with keys that work!
This is an excellent book that belongs on the self of anyone who wants to be considered up-to-speed on the critters that dwell in our waters. I've had the opportunity to use the annelid and the tardigrade keys thus far, and both worked wonderfully. The general information for all of the groups is well written and up-to-date, and the addition of color plates is a nice touch. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Compared to other arthropods, crustaceans are characterized by an unparalleled disparity of body plans. Traditionally, the specialization of arthropod segments and appendages into distinct body regions has served as a convenient basis for higher classification; however, many relationships within the phylum Arthropoda still remain controversial.

Can Crustacea even be considered a monophyletic group?
If so, then which are their closest relatives within the Arthropoda?

The answers to questions such as these will play a key role in understanding patterns and processes in arthropod evolution, including the disappearance of certain body plans from the fossil record, as well as incidences of transition from aquatic to terrestrial environments.

Crustacea and Arthropod Relationships, written by a team of internationally recognized experts, presents a wide variety of viewpoints, while offering an up-to-date summary of recent progress across several disciplines. With rich detail and vibrancy, it addresses the evolution and phylogenetic relationships of the Arthropoda based upon molecular, developmental, morphological, and paleontological evidence.

Volume 16 is the first in the series to not be exclusively dedicated to discussions specific to crustaceans. While it is still crustaceo-centric, thefocus of this volume has beenextended to include other groups of arthropods along with the Crustacea. This wider focus offers challenging opportunities to evaluate higher-level relationships within the Arthropoda from a carcinologic perspective.

This volume is dedicatedto the career of Frederick R. Schram, the founding editor of CrustaceanIssues in 1983, in recognition of his many stimulating and wide-ranging contributions to the evolutionary biology of arthropods in general, and of crustaceans in particular. ... Read more

The "Ingolf" took this species at the following two stations.S. of Iceland: St 67: 6i 30'N. L., 22 3o'W. L., 975 fm., temp. 3; i female. - 65: 6i33' - 19 o' - 1089 - - 3; i male. Distribution. This species was first taken by the Prince of Monaco at ten stations near the Azores and in depths from 330 to 73 3 fan. These islands lie between 37 and a little below 4o N. L.; the occurrence of G. a/finis at 6iI/2 N. L. and at much greater depths as indicated above has therefore considerable interest Further, it has been taken in the South Atlantic at ca. 25'/2 S. L. in a vertical net at 1064 fm. and 498 fm. (Doflein), at the coast of East Africa a little below 3 N. L. in 724 fm. (Doflein) and in the Indian Ocean off the Travancore coast (Alcock).Remarks. A. Milne-Edwards and Bouvier have given a detailed and careful description of this species and remarked on the differences between it and the nearly allied G. quinquedens Smith. The "Ingolf specimens certainly belong to G. affinis, which is evident amongst other things from the form of the last joint of the walking legs, a character specially noted by the French authors with good reason. These authors have only figured an extremely large specimen; my specimens are rather small, the carapace in the male being only 4o mm., in the female 42 mm. in length, and I have thought it useful to give the outl... ...
