5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful explanations and practice problems
Just want to reiterate what many say here--this book is helpful for your college orgo class from the very first day. It may not mirror exactly what your class teaches (mine went into more depth on some subjects and less on others), but the skills it teaches are important to know for the MCAT and will make any orgo test more approachable. I found it to be far more readable than my textbook (McMurry).

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Organic Chemistry Easy
1) You need to buy part 2 of this series if you are also taking the second semester of OChem.
2) Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many little tricks in this book that makes the explanation on your textbook laughable. My textbook (Hornback's book) explains almost everything in the most complicated way possible (I have no idea why Hornback wants to confuse the students) but this book strips all of the nonsense and gets right down to the explanation in simple terms that anyone can understand.

Bottom line is this: if you want to *DESTROY* OChem, this book is your primary weapon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
The book itself arrived on time and in perfect condition. Couldn't ask for more!
I also really like this book. It is much more clear than my textbook and is very helpful in walking me through the steps to solve a problem (all the answers are in the back of the book, too!). Would definitely recommend to any OChemI students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook Supplement
This book was an excellent supplement for my organic chemistry course. Concepts are explained clearly and practice problems help enforce what is learned. Unfortunately, my professor did not take the time to explain reasoning and theory behind certain concepts, so students were left to learn on their own with the textbook (which, itself, is not the most useful tool). I was very satisfied when I purchased this book and am confident it helped me to succeed in organic chemistry.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK but not the best
I have seen this company provide better books. This book was not so clear and detailed as other dummie books. Study your text book, use your Ti-84 calculator ad ask your local college professor for help. You'll do fine without this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars interesting but useless for class
This book was really interesting. I bought it to get a jump start with my chemistry class. This book leaves out almost every thing I needed to learn (MEMORIZE) which would have been handy. If your looking for help, your better off searching free websites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry I For Dummies
Complements the workbook well. It's a good book to have if you just want simplier, more clear-cut answers than those which are found in a textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Steamy YA Romance
Thoughts:

Perfect Chemistry was one of my friends attempts at forcing me outside of my genre "comfort zone." She wouldn't let me leave the book store with out it, even with my heavy complaints of teen drama crap. I understand that Paranormal YA is going to have teen drama crap too, but let's be honest it's going to be much funner with vamps, wolves, and mysteries. So I left my comfy genre, trudging into the terror of teen mello drama. Well I finished in about a day, so it's safe to say I enjoyed it.

I won't say that Perfect Chemistry was completely awesome, everything I never new teen drama could be. No, it was actually everything I thought teen drama would be. Elekeles manages to make the whole top-of-the-cheer-pyramid-perfect-girl-falls-in-love-with-bad-boy-with-secret-soft-side story into something that I was totally absorbed in. The characters were real, they all had there own issues and depths. It was fun learning about the two, then watching them have to get over the hang-ups they had about one another.

This book was pretty formalistic, but Elekeles knows what she's doing. You want to cry and laugh with the characters as the events happen. Elekeles addresses cheating (as in couples), how long you can truly lie to yourself, gangs (in really believable detail), sex, and other life drama. This book is truly about excepting yourself and taking hold of your dreams. With great writing, fantastic humor, and a certain realness to it that a majority of readers young or old can relate to.

One thing I wasn't expecting was the adult content towards sex. Some of the scenes made me forget I was reading a YA book instead of an adult romance. There's nothing too explicit, or at least nothing as explicit as what's shown on TV, but it was not what I was expecting in a YA book. I grew up when french kisses where pretty hot in YA books, and if there was a sex scene it was skipped over. Now I'm not saying that I didn't like how mature this book was, because I really do love the maturity, some younger readers may want to hold off until they're a little older.

Bottom Line:
If you've been thinking about jazzing things up and trying out the YA Romance genre, this is a great start. If you're a YA Romance reader already, why haven't you read this. This book gets you delved into the characters as not many books can do, so enjoy the emotional high. Forget about this being teen drama, drama is every where. This is just a bit more angst with a happy ending, and hot hot tension that will leave you breathless.

Sexual Content:

Pretty heavy make out scenes, and a pushy boyfriend who wants sex. The final sex scene is still pretty hot, but the mechanics are jumped over so it's not too explicit. If you under 16 wait a bit more for this read, or have you parent read it before you try it.

Rating:
4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Chemisty, Perfectly Written!
What it's about...

Alex and Brittany in terms of how they live their lives and their backgrounds, are polar opposites.Brittany lives in the affluent part of town, she wears the big names in terms of clothing and is part of the popular clique. Plus, her boyfriend is the star football player of their schools team. All that perfection is only a facade, however, her biggest issue that she hides from others is the fact that she has an older sister with physical and mental disabilities and is constantly fighting with her parents about what is best for her.

Alex's life is not easy by any means either. He is a gang member by necessity in order to protect his family as best he can from the violence in the area they live.Recently the stakes have gotten much higher and he is asked by one of the higher - ups to help with a drug smuggling operation.

Alex and Brittany have known each other for ages in a casual way for many years, but it is not until they are made lab partners by their tyrannical chemistry teacher that they actually interact.. To say they didn'tget along at first is an understatement.....

What I think......

Perfect Chemistry it seems to me like a present day Romeo and Juliet .Unlike Romeo and Juliet, however, the words used are a lot less complicated! I enjoyed this book a lot! it teaches some life lessons without being preachy and the amount of violence is not overly exaggerated and definitely authentic

4-0 out of 5 stars A good and enjoyable read...
This definitely isn't one of my all time favorite reads, but I still really enjoyed this book, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to a friend. This has a nice pace, and I never felt the book dragging along endlessly. The love between Alex and Brittany was fun to watch blossom, with the timing done just right.-Not rushed or unnatural.

I know that some people might not love the ending, but I thought it was a great way to end the book, and a nice way to remember Paco. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my absolute favorites . . .
Perfect Chemistry is set in a Chicago area high school that brings together two very different groups of teenagers: the richy rich white kids with their houses on the beach and the Latino Blood gang members from a different neighborhood. The two groups rarely mix (and then not without scaring each other) but that's about to change when Alex and golden-girl Brittany are made lab partners thanks to their teachers forced seating chart.

It's the worst thing either of them can imagine at first (Alex just knows Brittany is all fluff and no substance and Brittany is sure Alex is going to stab her or shoot her at any moment), but things soon change.

Alex is more than just a gang member, more than just the oldest brother trying to do right for his siblings and more than just a really smart guy who can't quite stay out of trouble....And Brittany is more than the popular girl who has an older sister with cerebral palsy and expectations on her from everywhere. Because of all of that (and a certain bet)--and their insane chemistry, Alex and Brittany make this more than the typical bad boy meets good girl story.

Perfect Chemistry was told in alternating points-of-view, one chapter was told by Alex and then one by Brittany and so on so you got each of their sides of everything. And Alex's dialogue and chapters included Spanish which only made things feel more real.

Both characters having so much depth to them, from Alex's gang activity (and it not being downplayed, passed over or made to be really nice and light) or the storyline involving Brittany's sister really made Brittany and Alex more like people you cared about than book characters you were reading about.

I can't say enough about how much I loved this book.

Out of all of the books I've read in probably the last few years, this is probably the only one where I've really missed the characters once the book was over. There have been other books where I was truly sorry the book was over and books I've loved, but this is the only one where I can remember missing the characters like I did.

So, read this book-for serious.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Girls + Bad Boys = Cliches
ROMEO & JULIET get yet another run through the rinse cycle in Simone Elkeles'simperfect PERFECT CHEMISTRY, a watered-down good girl/bad boy fantasy straight out of Hollywood. In this case, the setting is suburban Chicago, where the beautiful Brittany falls (despite herself and her precious reputation and her harridan mom) for the local gangster Mexican-American, Alejandro (a.k.a. "Alex").

Brittany fights gamely, of course, because the across-the-tracks romance is against all odds (though the reader knows better). She already has the perfect boyfriend, Mr. Football Golden Boy; the perfect hair, an every-hair-in-place get-up; and the perfect house, big and perfectly appointed.Imagine her chagrin when this handsome Mexican gangsta crosses her path in the high school parking lot with his motorcycle. Keep imagining when the tough-as-nails chemistry teacher assigns this same rake as her lab partner.Quickly, the dialogue falls into the old Sam & Diane routine (for those who remember the "love you/hate you" back-and-forths from the old television show, CHEERS).Soon, though, the two begin to break down each other's defenses.Soon, love is in the air (and, in time, in a few other places).

Kudos to Elkeles on one count: she gives Brittany a sister with cerebral palsy and makes her the focal point of Brittany's life.Yes, it can be faulted as a gimmick -- the hidden truth in this "everything's perfect" girl's life -- but it at least is a wrinkle seldom marketed when trading in cliches like this.Overall, however, the alternating point of view chapters look too similar, as Alex accidentally sounds like Brittany with a Spanish accent at times. For instance, he at one point identifies lipstick colors by their crazy names (as marketed by the cosmetics company) in complimenting Brittany's selection. This kind of detail no self-respecting guy would pick up.He might note a color change, but as far as knowing the crazy names as if he himself is a habitue of cosmetics departments?Ah, no.

The end gets all corny and unbelievable as it jumps through hoops for the requisite happy ending. This book has an audience and knows how to please it, after all.PERFECT CHEMISTRY came recommended to me by teachers in an on-line discussion of YA fare, but it is not appropriate for middle school classroom libraries due to the profanity and sexual situations.Girls who want to believe that there are idealized good guys running around in wolves clothing, however, should be pleased with Elkeles's outing. The formula is familiar and, in that respect, does not disappoint.Otherwise, don your safety glasses and be forewarned in advance -- cliches are the catalyst in this "opposites attract" mix. ... This book is a good study guide to use in addition to the main textbook you may be using. It explains some concepts better than the textbook. It also has additional information you may not find in your textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this Book!
The reviewer who gave this book 3 stars was correct -- this is a book for those of us who have no chemistry background or who are "chemically challenged." I just spent about 6 hours on Friday night working problems from this book. Each time I got the answer correct, I was ASTOUNDED and compelled to work "just one more problem" to make sure that I really was getting the answers correct, and that it wasn't just a fluke or easy problem. This book has actually allowed me to entertain the idea that I might be able to do chemistry. After a life of avoiding math and science, I can't wait to take Chem 1 in the summer!!BUY THE BOOK

I have taken two of three exams for the course and aced both of them thanks to this Homework Helpers: Chemistry book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book
I would strongly recommend this book in reviewing for the Chemistry SAT. It offers lucid explanations for basically all the topics covered on the Chem SAT test. While the practice problems that it offers are a bit on the easy side, this book is enough to get you the score that you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
it was so helpful! if u're in a rush to study or not, this book is PERFECT for you! i had only one day to study and i was able to finish the book and it covered everything i needed to noe! i highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you are aiming in 600s...
This book is far too shallow. It does not go into enough depth in terms of material. I have taken this test along with 2 siblings. Please choose the 2009 Barron's SAT Chem book instead - that covers all material and ensures a 750+. My entire family scored 800 with that book. This was our first book, which we bought and I used at first (and got 710, not satisfied). Do not purchase this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource to prepare for SAT Chemistry Subject Test!
My son didn't sign up quickly enough to take the Chemistry subject test in June (when the material would have been fresh) so we were looking for a good review book to prepare him for the test in the Fall.I can't say enough about this book!It provides great review material and three complete tests with answers and explanations.

My son took the first test without doing any review - he scored a 530.He then read the explanations for the answers he missed and started skimming the review sections for any gaps in knowledge.A couple of days later he took the second test and scored a 630 - woohoo, definite progress.Again, he read the explanations for the answers he missed and did more review. He took the third test a few days before the actual exam and scored a 680 on that one.Again, a little more review and he was set for the actual test.Because the subject tests deduct points for incorrect answers, one of the most valuable things my son learned from this process was to not answer questions he didn't know - especially those he couldn't narrow the answer down (with certainty) to a 50-50 choice.

Test day came and he was completely relaxed and confident.I won't give his exact score, but he did score in the 700s and I know there is no way he would have done nearly as well without using this awesome resource.

Total time for him to do all of the above - about 10 hours spread over less than two weeks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Seasoned Teacher says: Best Chem SAT2 Prep!
I am a science teacher and think this is the best SAT2 prep book for the Chemistry test.

Each chapter is followed by questions of the three types you will find on the test, and there are 3 excellent practice tests in the back.

There are explanations for all the questions in the back.

One issue: The Henderson-Hasselbach equation never shows up on the Chem SAT2 (of course now that I've said that it probably will!), so skip that part in the Acid/Base Chapter.

Supplement with Thomas Evangelist's McGraw/Hill SAT2 prep book. NOT for the review, but for the 5 tests he has written for the book. Some of the questions that come up in those tests are irrelevant (like the Nernst equation), but the tests are excellent for practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry made not so scary
I received this book and was very skeptical that Chemistry could truly be self-taught.I was amazed at how quickly I was flying through the chapters. There are so many great things about this book. Each chapter is divided into numbered segments. There are self-check questions for each segment. You can quickly test yourself on whether you grasp the concept before moving on.Then at the end of each chapter is a quiz. Each question has the segment in which the question correlates to.If you get the question wrong, you can easily go back and referrence why.The book uses great analogies for things like electron configurations, etc. which makes all the concepts easy to understand. The book is organized in a logical method and is easy to follow and progress from concept to concept.I had bought other Chemistry books and this one is by far the best one suited for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Review or Supplement
I bought this to review for a test after not having thought about chemistry for several years.Overall, the work is strong as a review or as a supplement to another more in-depth text. You will proceed from the most basic concepts to the harder work of applying those concepts to chemistry problems.

If you are primarily a visual learner, I would speak against this text as a base of learning because there are no pictures to illustrate what can be some very hard concepts to conceptualize and pictures do help.Another weakness of the work is that it is based primarily on answering questions. This is important and helpful, but the structure is such that the answers are just below the questions.

The layout makes it hard to sometimes answer the questions as the answers are directly below it.If you do buy this text, I would recommend finding and printing out a periodic table to refer to as the included table is rather short on information and the periodic table is a very powerful tool for understanding the science of chemistry

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry and more
For all you beginers in this course. This is a great book to start with.It helps understand formulas and equations better then ever.A must have!

1-0 out of 5 stars Better as a chemistry review, not a source book
I was trying to find a decent introductory book on chemistry as a refresher. Textbooks go for $150 these days, and this looked like a good choice. Be aware that it has very little explanation in it. It is primarily lists of questions with the correct answer displayed under the question. Not helpful at all for someone who has never had a chemistry course, and it is certainly not a self-teaching guide.

Had this book been named and described accurately, I would not have bought it and would not have given it a rating of one star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars books
I always get what I order on time and the product is always in great shape. The book that I purchased was just waht I needed to study with and I use it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book!
Though I haven't tried the Princeton Review book, I do own the Barron's version of AP Prep for Chemistry as well. 5 Steps to a 5 was much more concise than Barron's, which turned out to be ridiculously difficult. This book was great for review and the questions and the rapid review at the end of each chapter were great. The practice tests were also good. If you go through the material thoroughly, you should be fairly well prepared but be ready to use this book to complement your course of study in school, rather than as a self study guide (for that, Barron's is probably better).
All in all, I was really satisfied with my purchase because I ended up with a 5 on the exam!
Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 steps to a 5 ap chem 2010-11
The book came through the mail in perfect condition and it was delivered in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best AP Review Book of the ones I've read
The "Disappointed" name tag refers to a review on another purchase, and that name tag now shows up on all my reviews. So, I'm not disappointed in this purchase at all -- here's the deal: I bought this book because I was so happy with the other 5 steps to a 5 books that I checked out from my local library (biology, physics, and calculus), that even though my library didn't have the one for chemistry, I decided I had to have it. I am currently reviewing it along with the Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam book from the library, and I am VERY happy I bought this book. The material is covered much better, AND I really like the Rapid Review at the end of each chapter. Between the material just plain being better covered, and the Rapid Review at the end of the chapters (and the practice tests of course), this book has made studying for the AP exam a breeze! Very highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rigorous and rewarding
I ordered this book thinking it was going to be another typical Barron's review book. It wasn't - I have to say I paid little attention in this class because my teacher explained things well enough to remember for the test. When it came to preparing for the AP test, I forgot almost everything - I did the practice questions on College Board and failed.

I went through this book, maybe taking 75% of the information (there is WAY too much info, so just be a good judge of what you should know based on what you learned in class). I got a 5 - the actual test was very easy to me.

And I will be heading to Princeton next year :D. Good luck to all! Seriously recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needlessly complex, covers necessary material.
Not including the errors everyone else has mentioned, this book is needlessly difficult. The exercises it presents are much more complicated than the AP itself, furthermore many of the topics which the book tests you on are not actually on the AP. The morning of the AP I opened this book andfound 3 random multiple choice questions on a page. I could not answer any of them. Upon taking the AP, I answered all of the questions but one confidently and received a 5. This book did nothing for me but scare me out of my mind and make me grab all sorts of weaponry to make war upon this test when I was fully prepared to take it. Waste of time and money. On the positive side it does cover all the material, but so does your textbook...

2-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors
Beware! The sample test questions and answers are riddled with errors.Within the first 7 questions of Diagnostic Test 1, 2 of the questions contain errors that make the "correct" answer incorrect.I suggest skipping this book.Get a good chemistry text (Chang's 10th edition) and study from that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid review book but loaded with errors.
I really like Barron's review books because their philosophy is that they teach you the subject matter.Princeton Review books on the other hand are about "cracking the test" and does offer good tips, but if I were to get one book, it'd be Barron's because learning the subject is the surest way to getting a good score.Having said that, the book is LOADED with errors and for that I deduct 1 star... anything from just typing the wrong character ("=" instead of '-') to wrong answers, wrong set-ups, decimal places in wrong place, missing decimal places... you get the idea. It's as if the whole Chemical Equilibrium chapter was edited by someone who wanted to sabotage the student.I am not kidding. But the thing is, if you reasonably know the concepts, you'd catch the mistakes because the mistakes are in the examples and not in the concept explanations.Don't be scared away because of the typos, but just know they are there. In the final analysis, it is still a valuable book to me and I like it despite its faults.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review material decent, but with a plethora of errors
While it can be argued that this book does what it is intended to - provide a review of chemistry as preparation for the AP - it is difficult to justify several glaring issues with it.
1. Mistakes in the book - For a book coming from a company as well-known as Barron's, and for a test as widely taken as the AP Chemistry exam, one would expect that this book would be well-written and carefully checked over for errors. Instead, nearly every two or three pages there are errors that, while not immediately noticeable, can cause a good deal of confusion, especially when they involve miscalculations in example problems or chapter exercises.
2. Example problems - Errors in the problems aside, one would also expect that for a test that does not allow calculators the example problems in this book would be similar to those on the test; that is, they would be doable by hand. Instead, as other reviewers have pointed out, the problems expect you to do such calculations as negative logs and exponents without a calculator, which is totally unrealistic.
3. Over preparation - While I heartily agree that it is better to go into a test over prepared rather than under prepared, Barron's takes it to an extreme. Not only are there equations in the book that will almost certainly not be taught in an AP Chemistry course, let alone appear on the AP test, the level of detail the book goes into frequently ends up making the information cryptic and difficult to comprehend instead of lucid and clear. Indeed, the sheer length of the book is comparable to that of an AP Chemistry textbook, which makes it less than ideal for simply reviewing material before the exam.

Overall, this book will prepare you for the AP test. However, you will in the process be confronted with a tidal wave of typos, calculation errors, poorly written questions, and far more information and detail than is necessary. I'd expect better from Barron's. ... Read more

This product came in at a reasonable time. It was a little damaged on the sides and corners, but the actual was in perfect shape. It matched the description very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Help!
This book was so helpful to me when I was studying for the SAT chemistry subject test. It is a very detailed book that covers every aspect that could be on the test. Although I noticed that not everything that was in the book was on the actual test, I felt like I had a very thorough understanding of the subject matter through doing practice questions and reading through the explanations. The book also contains full practice tests, which really helped me get acquainted with pacing and time for the real test. Overall, this book was a great success to me when I took the chemistry subject test!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good review for basics, watch out at the end
I took the chem SAT after using this book and got a 740, which isn't bad. This book has a great review of the simple things, however, the end of the book goes waaaaaay too far into detail. The electrochem and nucleonics chapters are in so much detail, that you could spend hours and hours studying every tiny thing, when almost nothing show up on the test in those chapters. After learning Ox-Redox and Organic, you should spend the vast majority of your time in the first 8-9 chapters. Pay particular attention to the areas on solutions, acids and bases, and molarity/molality concentrations. Just be careful where you spend your time with this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much Information Need to rewrite the book
My son just took the SAT II chemistry. He had been using this book for reviewing. He found that this book provides too much unimportant information. This could distract you from reviewing what is necessary. In his opinion, this book did not help much.It also seems to me they have not updated the material in this book much.I have a 2003 Barron's chemistry-the easy way. There is very little difference between the two books. If you are taking AP chemistry already,a simplier book to remind you some easy stuff may be more helpful. In addition, you should try to practic a real test so that you know how fast you need to work to finish all the questions in a pace that you feel comfortable. I read some of the chapters in book, someare very good.I would hope Barron will rewrite this book to reflect the real test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great review of chemistry, albeit a bit harder than the real test
This is an excellent book to review chemistry before taking the big test. It explains general chemistry in a very clear way (especially quantum mechanics). Like all books, it does have a few errors (1 km does not = 100 m, pg 58). Overall though, this is definitely worth $12 for the extra 200 points. ... Read more

BE WARNED
This book DOES NOT cover everything in the second semester of a typical organic chemistry 2 class. The NMR, IR, mass spectra are not discussed - something I had most trouble with. However, this is a must have for synthesis problems.
The authors are geniuses, they made it interesting and easy.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok for brushing up on ochem
problems are too easy. everything is simplified for you.did not like the organization of the book.good for supplementing your ochem text or for cramming, but not recommmended to learn from.the mechanisms are ok...not that good and there aren't that many.some rxns are slightly different maybe its the author's preference for some reagents?i somewhat regret purchasing this...did not purchase the first semester version, only purchased this from a friend who recommended it

Product Description
Organized around functional groups, this book incorporates problem-solving help, orientation features, and complete discussions of mechanisms. Wade explains concepts without taking the unnecessary short cuts that often lead to misconceptions—his hallmark problem-solving approach includes unique strategies and hints to help readers focus on the individual steps of each reaction and how they contribute to the overall reaction. Wade also employs the most  efficient method of mechanism boxes with its two-tiered approach: Mechanism and Key Mechanism Boxes. He delineates the 20 “Key” mechanisms that comprise nearly all of the mechanisms students will encounter. Therefore, the book takes one additional and important step in helping readers identify and grapple with the smallest number of the most important concepts to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid OChem Prep
This text by Wade is the next in a long line of excellent Organic Chem books that I used in high school through college. Previous editions have been top notch, always with clear pictures and text that is easy to read. Unlike other texts, this one does not cram text onto the page but keeps it comfortable. The graphics are memorable, and the organization is logical which helps with retention. I've used Wade text for a few years now and can recommend them with assurance. OChem can be fun, at least in my opinion. Enjoy!

Product Description
This book challenges the perception of chemistry as too difficult to bother with and too clinical to be any for. Cathy Cobb and Monty L Fetterolf, both professional chemists and experienced educators, introduce readers to the magic, elegance, and, yes, joy of chemistry. From the fascination of fall foliage and fireworks, to the functioning of smoke detectors and computers, to the fundamentals of digestion (as when good pizza goes bad!), the authors illustrate the concepts of chemistry in terms of everyday experience, using familiar materials. The authors begin with a bangs colourful bottle rocket assembled from common objects you find in the garage - and then present the principles of chemistry using household chemicals and friendly, non-technical language. They guide the reader through the basics of atomic structure, the nature of molecular bonds, and the vibrant universe of chemical reactions. Using analogy and example to illuminate essential concepts such as thermodynamics, photochemistry, electrochemistry, and chemical equilibrium, they explain the whys and wherefores of chemical reactions.Hands-on demonstrations, selected for their ease of execution and relevance, illustrate basic principles, and lively commentaries emphasise the fun and fascination of learning about chemistry. This delightful and richly informative book amply proves that chemistry can appeal to our intuition, logic, and - if we are willing to get down and dirty - our sense of enjoyment too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Joy of Chemistry
This book is great for teachers who want to do short chemistry experiments with students or even demos. There is a great shopping list to get anything you need for all the experiments at the grocery store or hardware store. It also has good information and review for teachers on every chemistry concept. If you don't know a lot about chemistry this book will help make sense of basic concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great chemistry book
I bought this book because of an intriguing review in Science News. This book makes chemsitry accessible to adults who would like to learn more - it includes a shopping list so you can go out and get supplies for all the demonstrations described in the book, and then read about what is going on. I plan on incorporating some of the demos and, more importantly, the book's spirit of curiosity into my own teaching of a chemistry unit within a high school general science course.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Alternative to a Text Book
The book I chose to read explains the basics of chemistry and introduces labs to back up each topic learned. The intended audience is predominately towards high school students as well as anyone who does not have a strong feel for chemistry. The purpose of this book is to teach chemistry in an educational way that makes it entertaining, which the authors did a good job accomplishing.
The authors do this through real-life examples of how chemistry is exemplified in real life as well as detailed laboratory experiments which can be easily done at home. For those who are willing to buy all the necessary materials for these experiments, as well as having the patience to make certain solutions, will find themselves most likely enjoying these experiments. However, in my case, I do not have the patience to perform these labs at home, but the book does a good job explaining the outcomes of the experiments anyways.
The book was clearly well written and actually easy to follow, which is not always the case for chemistry books and text books. It did a great job explaining chemistry concepts and used metaphors to explain these ideas and their significance. This allowed for quicker understanding and less need to embellish certain topics. The book was definitely concise; it only provided a brief understanding of basic chemistry ideas, and definitely could have gone into further detail for those who already have a general knowledge of the subject. However, this book was not intended for such an audience, and did a good job explaining topics to beginners of chemistry.
The authors use a wide range of material to educate the reader. This book focuses entirely on educating a wide spectrum of material for the reader to gather, and because of this, it is unbiased.
In my opinion, the beginning was the best part of the book. It was when I was most excited to read this book, but admittedly, it became a little boring to read halfway through. The beginning introduction was well written, because it excites the reader about what is to come. It explains how to make bottle rockets as well as oobleck. The authors did a great job incorporating relevant laboratory experiments which each chapter. Each experiment was explained before the chapter of its topic so the reader has a first-hand understanding of what they are about to learn in full detail. It allows the reader to understand its uses in everyday life. At times, I felt there was too much emphasis on experiments and examples and not as much explaining in the chapter.
I would recommend this book to students who are first learning chemistry and have a hard time grasping the information. It teaches a lot of the material a text book would offer but teaches concepts in a different teaching style. This could be beneficial for many students.
This book should definitely be kept on next year's chemistry class. There are few books which can capture such a great learning style. It offers the reader a different domain of information with its novel-like structure than a text book. It also should be added to the library's book collection, and should be recommended to read by those who struggle with grasping the concepts of chemistry.
This book did a good job addressing its information. The authors made a great attempt at making chemistry fun. I have grown fond of chemistry over the past year and this book has widened my spectrum of knowledge in the field of chemistry, even though it only taught the basics. Thus, it did a fine job serving the purpose of the assignment. At spots the book would be hard to get through, but the read was well worth it. I know that because of this book, I will have a better understanding on the significance of chemistry on the environment around us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and useful book
Vey interesting book that makes easy the understanding of chemistry. This is good for preparing a lecture or just for information as a cultural point of view. I recommend it for chemistry students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Less of an idiot now
I feel that I'm less of an idiot after reading "The Complete Idiots Guide to Chemistry". It covers what any "Idiots Guide" should...the basics. Hard to get subjects are explained pretty well. For me it was atomic energy levels.I never have had a book tell it to me like I was dumb and thats what I needed.I'm not taking chemistry or anything but I like to understand the world around me and this book helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS MY CHEM BIBLE.
I am very, very thankful for myself that I chose this book over any other chemistry book.

My teacher does not know how to teach at all, so basically everyone in our class is not learning any materials that he/she needs to prepare him/herself for college or even AP classes. And I, with my idiot chem book, am acing every single quiz and test with this book - never below 90. People say that the best way to learn a subject is to read textbooks, but what am I suppose to do when the teacher doesnt follow textbook and the txtbook itself is complicated and unnecessarily wordy?

I can tell you, that this book is actually fun to read, and I am actually learning something from this book.

However I have to inform that this book does not go in dept; it's more like for high school level chemistry, which is perfect for me but for college or even higher, I am not very sure.

I can go on forever talking about how helpful this book is for me, but I would stop here since I made my point clear.

Buy this, and you will not regret, especially you are struggling with chemistry in HS and have NO idea what the heck is going on during your chem class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice quality
It's a good book for mastering and improve your chemistry. It's a new book and fast shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Replacing my high school textbook
This book is excellent on covering the material I am currently learning in high school. I'm not sure how helpful this will be to AP Chemistry students, but this will definitely help out students of regular chemistry. The book is very informative in a concise, and surprisingly, humorous way. It's extremely straightforward, which is a plus when you are trying to memorize key concepts without the excess ranting you sometimes find in textbooks. By the way, what takes 3 pages to explain in my textbook can be explained in 3 paragraphs in this guide. The greatest thing is that I have been able to score 93% and above on my tests (can't credit my teacher because he depends on the textbook to teach us). Use this guide and you'll be set for the rest of the year!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally Something
I admit I was a bit insulted by the title, after I was refered to this book by a librarian. However I had went through at least five or six chemstry books before I found one that I could remotely understand. Ideally enough it follows the similair if not same pattern as my textbook.

I must applaud Ian Guch for a job well done on his ability to community the knowlege of chemistry into a language that the students can understand. As a struggling college student this book looks indeed to be a great help.He gives you simple visual ideas and relates them to common situations so you can get the "big picture."This was a big help for me as a visual learner.

Another plus about this book is that unlike most that I have gone through this one actually covers other branches of chemistry as well.So that was a huge plus, most (or at least the ones that I have read) books only covered chemistry basics.

The only issue I have is that the problems they give you do make you feel like an idiot. If the author were to add a bit more challenging problems this book would be "perfect." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasatic Molecular Model Kit!
This is a great alternative to the expensive Prentice Hall set. It's not the standard because it works a little differently, but with a little practice and use, you can understand molecules, their angles and configurations with this set. It's smaller, compact, easier to put together/take apart, and comes with many extra pieces. I've had the opportunity to compare because I use the Prentice Hall set in a discussion section for my course, and that set uses a tool to remove the Hydrogens. No tools with this set! We also run out of the Halogens almost always, even after just making a few small molecules. This set has a TON of halogens! I like that I can create my molecules, throw it in my bookbag, and not worry about them falling apart or breaking because they are made of a flexible plastic rather than something hard that can break. This molecule set has helped me understand ALOT, especially R and S configurations. It also shipped VERY fast from MegaMolecules, thankfully right before an exam! Thanks for making a great product that I am using way more than I expected!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product for the money
I bought this for my husband who is a Biotechnology major and has several chemistry classes. He really likes this kit - it small and portable for him to take to class & lab, and it seems to have everything he needs to make the models. It's great for visualization. Great product for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
great great great great.cheap and it does what it is suppose to.don't buy a huge expensive model set.one minor draw back is that the chair conformations aren't super duper but you get the gist with this set.I'm going to get another one so i can bigger models with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price and excellent quality!
Don't waste your money on any other chemistry model kit...this one is the absolute best out there for its price. To compare with other kits, here's what this one contains:

Hydrogen - 30
Carbon - 14
Oxygen - 8
Nitrogen (107 degrees) - 4
Nitrogen (109.5 degrees) - 1
Sulfur - 2
Phosphorus - 2
Fluorine - 6
Bromine - 6
Chlorine - 6
Iodine - 6
Alkali metal, beryllium, boron, silicon (SiH4), copper (Cu(NH3)4), phosphorus (PCl5), sulfur (SF6) - 1 each

Single bonds - 48
Double bonds - 12

Enjoy!

If you're physically sticking together a molecule this a great set. It's limited in its number of parts, but basically pretty adequate. It doesn't have all the precisely defining characteristics of other sets I've seen and used, but all in all, this kit will get one started, and it's hard to break the parts. And philosophically, there ain't a perfect model. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow
Easy to read. Supplements my Organic Chemistry class well. However, would like to see more pictures and examples of problems. Overall, it's a good textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chem books
This book is very helpful for Orgo Chem. I would definitely recommend buying the Organic Chem book since it explains the much harder concepts.

amazon was very quick at having the textbook shipped to me.i wasn't expecting it so quickly!it was good though so i could check my answers for the problems before i turned them in.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good service
This buyer was great to work with. I had lost the package due to a wrong address but the buyer was willing to work with me on it until I found my package. Great service. Would use again.

3-0 out of 5 stars The ebook doesn't have the whole contents of the textbook.
Unless I'm confused the ebook doesn't come with every problem at the end of each chapter. If I go to table of contents and click on Problems in the Chapter 1 section it goes right to 1.42.There isn't a section in the back of the ebook to check your answers either.

If these are missing, I'm curious to know what else is missing from the ebook that isn't so obvious. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Gentle, Helpful
Finally, a book about Depression that left me with actual tools to help build my life again!I love this book and have recommended it to so many people since reading it in 2009.A must read for anyone who struggles with depression and is ready to have their life back!

5-0 out of 5 stars A holistic look at depression
I enjoyed reading this book for its holistic view of depression. Dr. Emmons blends philosophy, Buddhist wisdom, the glycemic index, SSRIs, and exercise into a formula for better living. What I especially like about this book is its view of the person as a whole, looking at the person experiencing depression, not just at the depression itself. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is a wonderful book whether you suffer from depression or not.Everyone gets off-center sometimes, and this is a great explanation as to figuring out your particular tendencies and how to deal with them when (or before) they happen.Great perspective on how to use Western medicine appropriately and how to incorporate alternative therapies.Scientific while still being an easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books on self-help
I've been depressed for 5 years, this book is one of the best, I'm surprised that it's not that popular, i would say it's on the level of the book by D. Burns "Feeling good", they're different, but both of them are really good. The meditation exercises are really helpful, they get my mood up right away. The author writes really well, very understandable. I got a lot of valuable things out of this book. Buy it and you won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chemistry of Joy: A Three-Step Program for Overcoming Depression Through Western Science and Eastern Wisdom
