5-0 out of 5 stars it really is.
I have loved The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need now for over 10 years. I understand myself so much better as well as my spouse, kids, and anyone else who will give me their birth date, time and place.I encourage my patients and students to do their own charts with this book too. What a great tool!

1-0 out of 5 stars An Astrology Book You Really Don't Need

Amen to a previous reviewer who said that this book is so not "The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need." It's not even an astrology book that you'll need at all.
Parochial, not very well written, no ephemeris, seriously lacking in synastry info--I get the distinct feeling that Ms Woolfolk created an astrology "cookbook" that could be marketed through a ridiculously all-inclusive title to convince the unsuspecting that this is truly the one astrology book you'll need. Absolute rubbish. If you need a list of talented authors with really worthwhile books out there take the time to read Robert Hand, Liz Greene, Jan Spiller, Stephen Arroyo, Marguerite Manning and Debbi Kempton-Smith to name the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificient and Truly One Of It's Kind..
It's my first book on astrology picked up at a local library but unbelievably a marvelous one!!! I have actually verified my birth chart in reference with this book and to my surprise it has proved it's worth.
A brilliant, bright, genius writer who suffices each famished soul.

Great for beginners. Highly recommended. Will soon buy me a copy for myself.
Good Luck-

5-0 out of 5 stars So Accurate It Impressed Us
Book goes beyond the sun signs. It tells you about the moon in different signs, and the planets as well. Includes an ephemeris to look up the moon and planets and where they were when you were born. We did our horoscopes and we're creeped out by how accurate they were, especially the moon signs. I also did one for someone whom I know with a massive ego to the point of being annoying, and almost every planet/sign referred to the person having an ego problem. I don't know if it's the only one you'll ever need but if you're interested in astrology I would recommened you buy this first as it's so easy to use.

Where is the Mac CD?

I thoroughly enjoyed this "first" astrology book and I've since added to my collection, but when I purchased this book, I had a PC.Now I have a Mac and the PC CD doesn't work in my Mac.Will a Mac CD ever be created for this book? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Astrology for the Soul
Love knowing how and what to do to fit, feel and live my passion! Learning is key if you want happiness and success! Great Book ~ Helps you understand the ones you love also!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, easy to follow
Overall, I liked this book. It is clear, easy to follow and well put together. You know exactly what you are getting, what you are looking for, and where to find it. The opposite of Elizabeth Spring's North Node Astrology book which is good for it's psychological approach, but takes 165 pages to get to the discussions of the North Node.

Each section in Spiller's book contains an overview, attributes to develop, tendencies to leave behind, the achilles heel or trap to avoid, what people with this North Node really want, talents/profession, healing affirmations, personality, needs, relationships, goals, and a healing theme song. Every sign gets about 30-40 pages, so you're getting a good amount of info related to your specific sign.

Be aware that if you are new to astrology, you need to know what sign rules each house so that you can check both your North Node sign and the house that your North Node falls in.

Spiller goes through each "tendency to avoid" and details what our past lives were like and why we need to release those traits in order to be happy and fulfilled in this lifetime. She is clear and specific and gives useful examples. She explains what gifts these past lives give us that we can use today (kind of like good karma in the bank that we can use to carry out our life purpose).

For me, I had trouble with the book but only because of my actual North and South Node placements. I have the unusual circumstance of having my North Node in the house of my South Node. I'm a libra rising with a North Node in Libra in the house ruled by Aries. So, 80% of the things Spiller discusses about the shadow side of having an Aries South Node didn't apply to me. In fact, I related more to the North Node in Aries/Libra South Node because my tendency is to be too aware of other people and their needs and to put their feelings above my own (rather than the description of the North Node Libra which is a person who tends to be self absorbed and demanding and needs to learn cooperation and listening skills). There were a few traits in my North Node section that did apply to me, but the majority didn't, so I have to assume my house placement takes more precedent than my North Node position at this time in my life if I am to make use of this book.

So, I think Astrology for the Soul is great for most people and I can use it in the charts of friends and clients, but for those of us that have a North Node in the house of our South Node, things get quite murky. You've got to sift through both chapters to figure out where you are and which tendencies actually apply to you and which don't. This is the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. There's no clear sense of how to deal with this situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accidentally found, one of my favorite references for my own life
I first came across this book when a new friend started to read it to me while I was driving. She was not very familiar with astrology, so since I had told her I was a Gemini, she began reading the Gemini chapter. Then I later looked at the book and realized it was not about Sun signs at all, but instead it's about the North Node. This realization made me very happy. I have already absorbed much of the generalized, rehashed information about the Sun signs. I hunger for deeper knowledge that the Moon's Nodes contain. Knowledge about why I am here on crazy planet Earth, in situations I often strongly dislike, and what my life purpose really is on a soul level.

Jan is very thorough in each of her chapters, and that is something I need, especially about something as profound as the Nodes. When I read the chapter on my Taurus North Node, especially seeing the brief bulleted sections "Attributes to Develop", "Attributes to Let Go Of" (or some similar titles, don't have the book here), I could strongly relate to all of it. It felt like, "Finally! Someone understands exactly what I've been going through, and *wow*, there IS a way out of this mess...there is a better life out there and I can start living it now." Luckily the chapter doesn't end after a frew brief paragraphs but goes on in detail about many areas of life and how my Taurus North Node can and should be harnessed for maximum happiness and success in my life.

I also read the Pisces chapter (because my Node is in my 12th) and that hits home strongly as well. I read the positions for people I know...my sister, Mom, Dad, coworker, friend, etc., and it's amazing how, when viewed through the lense of the Nodes, a person's life lessons become very clear. My Dad has always been about work, work, work, don't play, don't relax, work. When I was a child, this caused a lot of tension at home. Look up his birthday and find out--surprise!--he has a Cancer North Node, with hard-working Capricorn as his over-developed South Node to start leaving behind. This is just one example, but Jan's insight into each of the 12 positions of the Node is very eye-opening and helpful/healing for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW.
A friend recommended this book to kind of introduce me to astrology. All I can say is WOW.It is so dead on accurate it is scary. It's like she climbed into my mind and wrote down my personality, and how I react to situations and what I need ect... It is very interesting to read about yourself, but also read about others. For a couple of people in my life, the accuracy of their personalities was so accurate and eye opening it was alarming for them. One person who has a lot of negative things in her life and never gets what she wants read her section and really didn't want to hear it.Because the areas she needed to work on were TRUE and she didn't really want to admit it, or hear it.I would recommend this book for anyone who is OPEN to hearing these things and understands that maybe some of it might not be accurate, but for the most part (in my experience) it was creepy how much of it IS. It really does give insight to not only yourself, but others as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Astrology of what?
This book is fine if you already have your chart done. You need to know where your South and North Nodes are located . While the book goes into detail, I found most of the traits described did not fit my personality. The book while well written, did nothing for me. It did not hold my attention. I think it is good for a person who wants to learn to read charts for clients-- it would give them plenty to say. However true or untrue. ... Read more

    Product Description
Though the practice of astrology is many centuries old, it is only perhaps once in a generation that a thoroughly new, totally original way of looking at the zodiac is discovered. The New Astrology is such a system.

For those convinced that there is nothing new under the sun--or the stars--Suzanne White offers a startling and provocative thesis: There are not 12 but 144 signs of the zodiac, each distinct, each unique, each vital to everyone's quest for self-understanding.
By combining the astrological systems of the traditional Chinese (terrestrial) with that of the Occident (celestial), Suzanne White demonstrates that each of us is governed by two signs.Hence, a Capricorn Tiger is likely to be quite different from a Capricorn Cat, as is a Leo Dog from a Leo Dragon, and so on. This unique blend of Western and Chinese Astrology gives detailed analyses of each of the 144 signs, including individualized sections of love, sex and romance, business, money, careers, home life and compatibility (or lack of it) with other signs.
Already a best-seller in France, The New Astrology is a massive undertaking and the result of more than a decade of research and study of the two systems. It offers insights into not only our own lives, but also those of all who are close to us.Suzanne White's prose is lucid, candid, and suffused with a sense of fun, but The New Astrology is above all a serious tool for self-awareness and understand the rich variety of human nature all around us.

4-0 out of 5 stars everything I expected
I had seen this book several years ago and finally purchased it. Since the price I paid was less than the regular price, I was very pleased to receive book within a couple of weeks. And it was in perfect condition. I am another satisfied customer

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
This is a replacement for the same book I had at one time but seems to have gotten lost in the moves or something...I love reading this book for fun and it's a great conversation piece.Suzanne White is outstanding at making Astrology fun.I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys astrology and the Chinese Astrological signs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected at all.
When I read the title "A New Astrology" and saw this was a fusion of Eastern and Western astrology, I had high hopes.Sadly, Ms. White did not deliver.

I don't deny her "portraits" of each sign combo are more serious than her "New Chinese Astrology" (which isn't worth the postage, much less the cover price), but I heartily wish she'd approached this topic with more solemnity, perhaps devoting a few chapters to the differences, and how they overlapped.I applaud her for the attempt, the first that I know of to mix Chinese astrology with Occidental astrology.

Yet in this book, she gives no explanation why she substituted 'cat' for 'hare' (which she outlines in "The New Chinese Astrology" and even there, it's kind of shrill), nor why she attributed yang elements to signs that are traditionally yin, and vice-versa.

I *did* get some use out of this book but it's really little more than those "astrological signs for the year whatever" that appear every January.I wish Ms. White had gone into more detail why she fused these two very separate views, or provided some real information as to how to cast a natal chart using the Eastern Zodiac, or why she continued to deviate from some very specific boundaries set by the Chinese Zodiac. She had a great chance here, and she threw it away.

This book is useful enough for those who never delve deeper into astrology than the sun signs or those multitude of "combatibiltiy" books, but this is useless for anyone who truly wants to integrate Eastern astrology into their Western practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is great for those who love astrology. The information it provides accurate astrology interpretation. It's a new way of looking at astrology.Bought the book twice.Giving to a friend of mine who loves astrology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as expected
Little analysis on zodiac characteristic while I expect more info.
I'm not sure if the person who write this dislike of both Virgo and Goat, but from the reading, I sense a lot of negativity in their analysis. (while from other sources there are a lot of good thing from Virgo and Goat.

Only have two page of info for each combined sign.

Illustrates how aspects can offer a profound depiction of an individual and his or her destiny.*Contains comprehensive sections full of interpretations for every planetary combination.*Concepts are explained through the use of actual birth charts and diagrams.*A core textbook at the Faculty of Astrological Studies in London.

Aspects are an essential piece of the astrological puzzle when it comes to interpreting and using the information that astrology can give us. It is not enough to know the placement of the planets on the horoscope. It is the relationships between the stars and planets that let us grasp the destiny of the individual. Aspects describe the drama of our lives-the complex configurations that influence what will happen to us over time.

Sue Tompkins, a fellow of the Faculty of Astrological Studies in London, shows how to interpret aspects when doing daily astrological readings. She uses the lives of real people to plot the aspects and offers examples of every possible planetary combination. Detailing the influence of oppositions, trines and elemental trines, and cardinal, mutable, and fixed crosses, Tompkins shows how aspects provide the energy in the chart that transforms the horoscope into something symbolizing an alive and vital human being. With Aspects in Astrology, Tompkins provides both the novice and the experienced astrologer the evidence and concrete methods needed to grasp the vast knowledge offered to us by our horoscope. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars incredibly insightful!
i have studied astrology for about 13 years and just recently got this book. boy i was missing out, all i have to say is this book is amazing. i love sue tompkins' way of writing and explaining these aspects. it hits home and sheds so much light on lifetime issues! she goes into great depth, and yet you never feel alienated by assumptions that seem way off base. on the contrary, they are scarily accurate. things you could never quite put your finger on become clear at last. this book is crucial for any student of astrology or expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and Accurate
While I'm a new recruit to astrology, and cannot speak from long experience, I must say that this book was amazingly accurate in describing the aspects in the charts of the four people I studied with it, including myself. The planetary aspects are given the depth of description and insight I usually only find in describing sun sign types.Every single aspect is like a personality profile unto itself, lasting several pages and giving me a much deeper understanding than I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it, you won't regret it...
I checked this book out of the library, thinking I would "just make notes"--well, it became clear very quickly that I would have to copy just about everything in the book! I have read a lot of so-so astrology books, and I can say that as a student of astrology, I have not found another book to best this one for sheer information and insight. It is essential for the beginner or advanced to read this book. If you are serious about astrology, get this at once!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book is a great book written for astrologers with serious minds. It lacks the silliness that so many other astrology books contain, and she does not over state aspects or make sweeping solutions. There are no fairy- godmother passages were readers are told if they do this or that they will have a wonderful life afterward. She doesn't waste your time mother bashing or give long passages that are claimed to be written by this or that client explaining their experience; this book does not suffer from acreditability problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure in the canon of astrology
I have had my copy of this book since the 1st printing in 1990. I'm here to purchase one for a friend and colleague in the craft who has not had the good fortune to read it yet. I've moved several times (across the country), and bought and sold what must amount to several astrological libraries, yet this one seems to stick with me. It is one of the best you can buy, period. I'd place it among my favorite 5 astrology books ever written.

I have taught and written on many different astrological methods, and am a professional practitioner, so take my word for it - this is one of the clearest, universally applicable and insightful books on the subject I have ever seen. Ms. Tompkins has keen understanding of human nature and how to explain it through astrological symbolism. Although I personally do not ascribe to the modernist approach to the craft, you can jump into any other school of astrology and take the insights from 'Aspects' with you. These ideas are easily adaptable and they stick in the memory quite easily - because of how "spot on" they are about things we all experience in ourselves and others, and the precise way that she describes the planetary "face" of these experiences.

If you are a beginning student, please do no read another book before you read this one. If you have been through several of the modernist tomes, please read this marvel, and when you are done, start throwing out everything that you find you don't need to understand charts. You may end up ditching half your library. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be in Creative Writing Section
I was excited to buy this book hoping that it would add some real insight. Unfortunately, it contains nothing more than the creative writing that you find in newspaper horoscopes. It's a lot of generalized stuff that could fit almost anybody.

I would suggest supplementing this book with information about fate, destiny and the soul to get an even better understanding of your birth chart. I recommend Transforming Fate Into Destiny by Robert Ohotto.Transforming Fate Into Destiny: A New Dialogue with Your Soul

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for basic Introduction but lacks depth and references.
I have not read the dummies series, that was my first and maybe last book of the series.
Just lack of depth is implied by the title. Otherwise for basic Indroduction the book was
    good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a serious introduction.
If your curiosity on the matter is light and superficial, this book will do just fine. You'll find general and easy to understand explinations for a variety of topics in astrology along with an astrological "cookbook" for a quick chart analysis. The book comes short on the topic of sign compatibility rendering it too simplistically for any real use, though.
I also feel that the book is too trivial at times, harming astrology's already battered image; but this is more a personal opinion than a fact.
If your interest runs a bit deeper and/or are looking for a professional introduction, there are more serious and in-depth books out there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I had browsed through this book at local bookstore. I was so happy when i found it on amazon for a much lower price. I love how each sign is broken down my male and female. Being a Gemini I found that many of the qualities it listed were true. I enjoyed it so much that i bought it for a friend of mine and she loved it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars New condition and fast service
I purchased this book at a great cost. It arrived in the condition as stated "New". The service was prompt as the book is enjoyable. I highly recommend this seller!

For me, the book is very insightful.I also had alot of laughs discussing certain topics with my husband.I feel the information was on target as far as I know!I think this is a refrence type of book!

5-0 out of 5 stars nicely written
It's not often you find a well written and organized book on either astrology or sex, and this is both. Worthwhile and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome and recommended contribution to Metaphysical Studies collections
Sexual treatises usually focus on physiology and physical aspects, so it's quite unusual to find a survey which focuses on the astrological elements of attraction and sex, but "The Astrology of Great Sex" fills the information gap in providing astrologer's sun-by-sun analysis of which partnerships are really complementary. A welcome and recommended contribution to Metaphysical Studies collections, readers will learn the basics of sexual turnoffs and turn-ons with an astrological focus in chapters that cover dating, attraction, and sun signs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Herring makes Artemis proud
Despite vastly different sizes and distances, the Sun and Moon take up almost exactly the same amount of space in our sky. To those who can entertain the idea that our universe is alive, sentient and is speaking to us, this is truly a miracle of the most stupendous proportions. It is also evidence that your Moon sign is just as important to understand as your Sun sign. In my experience, this can be especially true if you are a woman or a someone who was born at night.

Amy Herring has written a great new book on the Moon which is well structured, easy to read, and full of wise and practical advice for either the novice or seasoned astrology buff. I have been studying astrology for almost 20 years and the section on the house of my progressed Moon definitely gave me some insight into an emergent major life lesson. If you don't have a book on the Moon I recommend snagging this one.

Herring's interpretations are top notch. She uses effective metaphors from a wide range of sources, including literary quotes, pop culture, and real life experience. But my favorite thing about this book is its impeccable organization. Astrologers are not always the best writers, yet Herring has done an outstanding job of laying out the material in a way which is easy to follow and gives expression to the full range of any Moon placement. I'm looking forward to seeing more books from this great new author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
In Astrology of the Moon, Amy Herring pays a fitting tribute to the most underrated planet in astrology. This book is well organized and written in layman's terms, which makes it an excellent resource for beginners who are often overwhelmed by astrological jargon.By starting with a discussion of the nature of the natal moon and an analysis of its characteristics by sign and by house, the author creates a foundation that enables the reader to easily understand the theory of the progressed moon. The discussion of the progressed moon in each sign and by each house is substantial, and the author's straightforward explanation of the aspects between the natal and progressed moon is easy to understand.I was particularly impressed by the discussion of "whole sign" aspects, which is significant but frequently overlooked by many astrologers. The "case studies" at the end of the book were refreshing because they were concise yet clearly demonstrated the influence of the progressed moon in a person's life.Astrology of the Moon is not only an excellent reference book, it is a timeless one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarity of the moon
"The astrological interpretation of progressions is a simple idea when you consider its root word: "progress". As we grow, we change...Our natal charts show the way ahead, our personal evolutionary path, and the progressed planets can help us track how that evolution needs to happen for us." From p. 79. This is how simple and clear Amy's work is. She brings such tremendous clarity and insight to the subject of the progressed moon that I beg her to write more books about astrology. I want to know more and her way of teaching works.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like astrology - buy this book!
If you're into astrology already and think you know everything - you need this book. If you're just picking up the basics and want to learn more - you need this book. Everyone can learn something from Amy's take on your Natal and Progressed Moon.

Amy has written a well-structured and thoughtful book which can be appreciated by professional and amateur astrologers alike. She writes in a delightful way that just draws you further and further into each chapter eager to learn more, though you can just as easily dip in and out of sections if you prefer. Her use of storytelling is done in a straightforward, easily understood, manner, rather than wrapping the reader in a web of words from which they leave the book none the wiser.

I am a client of Amy's and had this book on my wish list as soon as I heard about its release. I have not been disappointed. The same thoughtful process she puts into her work with clients is evident in this book.

    Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I have had several readings done by Amy, so when I heard about her book, I pre-ordered it.The minute I got it, I dove into it and I was not disappointed. It was just like getting a reading from Amy:friendly, understandable, interesting and informative.I use it all the time as a reference guide. The style is such that after I read one section and think "I wonder what..." there is another section that answers my question!I love this book and can't wait until Amy publishes something else! ... Product Description

Ancient Kabbalistic mysticism and the search for meaning by looking to the stars are related in ways that may surprise readers. Kabbalah, in fact, offers arguably the oldest and wisest application of astronomy and astrology known to humankind. Kabbalistic Astrology is a tool for understanding one's individual nature at its deepest level and putting that knowledge to immediate use in the real world. A natural addition to Berg’s many writings on spirituality, the book explains why destiny is not the same as predestination and shows that we have many possible futures and can become masters of our fate. Written in Berg’s trademark clear, intelligible style, the book teaches how to discover challenges faced in previous incarnations and how to overcome them, as well as the secrets to finding the love, success, and spiritual fulfillment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Needs More Depth
Good as far as it goes, which is farther than some astrology books; but I would have liked to see more information about the Kabbalistic and Talmudic associations between the Hebrew letters and planets and astrological signs, as well as more information about Kabbalistic astrology in general. The "Tikkun" feature is helpful in delineating the meaning of the North and South Nodes of the Moon and their relationship to spiritual growth, but you would receive more on this from Martin Schulman's classic "The Nodes of the Moon and Karma."(The nodes, spots where the moon rises and sets through the ecliptic or planetary plane, were mapped at Stonehenege and known to the the Hindus many thousands of years ago, and are pivotal in terms of understanding reincarnational growth patterns, as is brought out in this book.)One day I would like to see more from Michael Berg (whose work I love and whose father apparently wrote this respectable treatment) or his associates on Kabbalistic astrology in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value
This book offers an overview of the astrological signs in the Hebrew calendar so there is a need to convert your birthdate first from Gregorian to Hebrew, as your constellation of birth is not always the same in both. It then gives a list where your correction or tikkun sign can be found. I have found the comments for each sign quite applicable, as a birth sign as well as for the tikkun sign. Furthermore it gives us the general character of each month, and its effect on all of us, which is interesting to know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad-But the Authour is from the Kaballah Center of greed
He is a book factory and runs the kabbalah center pricey place of learning Kabbalah. This and other leaders not so greedy have some good information as well. Wood have given more stars but not a huge fan of the center of greed. They do help many and have a following but it is sold to the masses. Not bad but could be done for less.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review of Kabbalistic Astrology and the Meaning of Our Lives
I should preface this review by stating that I have read other books by Philip Berg and by his sons, and therefore have some familiarity with the material and the terminology. The book that introduced me to this system (Kabbalah)was "The 72 Names of God," which for me was an amazing eye-opener.Specifically with reference to the Astrology book, I would like to say that the information it has given me regarding my birth sign and my particular "tikune" (correction in this life) are right on target based on what I have recognized to be the areas in which I am lacking and the challenges that life has thrown my way in order to help me overcome those deficiencies. I therefore see this book as a very helpful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly!
Just when you thought there wasn't anything more credible than the Kabbalah as currently constituted, along comes P.S. Berg's "Kabbalistic Astrology," which adds the precision of astrology to the mix.

I happen to practice the casting of bones, so naturally I'm interested in Berg's oeuvre. As soon as I figure out the meaning of the third metatarsal, I'll be adding my spiritual gifts to this mass of wisdom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The stars point to this book!
I've been following the writings of William Levacy with interest since I became acquainted with his work in the 90's. All the stars must have been in allignment when he wrote "Vedic Astrology Simply Put" - what a beautifully written and illustrated book. You can tell that he has a profound understanding of the principles of vedic astrology - he's really passionate about his work. This book gets 5 big stars!

4-0 out of 5 stars A work of art in itself but improvement possible
As in his book "Beneath a Vedic Sky", William Levacy demonstrates even more in "Vedic Astrology Simply Put" his intention to make a book a work of art. This book is hardbound, coloured, with a bibliography and a list of resources. The content is well thought out and organised. With very few exceptions, like the Layout of Vastu Placements on page 286, the typeface is large enough. The author comes across to the reader as a nice, well intentioned person with a positive outlook on life.

The various lists of planets, constellations and houses serve well for basic natal horoscope interpretation. Mr Levacy does well by introducing enough Sanskrit words simply transliterated without attempting to teach us this sacred language in the process. Compared to "Beneath a Vedic Sky", Mr Levacy has included much clearer indications of how to proceed in analysing a Vedic horoscope. He also explains some basic Vedic astrological factors, for example sub-divisions of the zodiac, more clearly.

What significant improvements could the author include in a next edition?

    1. Include a short glossary of Vedic astrological terms and an index.

    2. The "Simply Put" part of the title is an advantage but also a risk of this book. As his fellow Vedic astrologers, Hart de Fouw and Robert Svoboda, well put it in their "Light of Life", "Too often the Western mind simplifies a complex idea in order to grasp it, and then misidentifies that signification with the original." Aside from possible over-simplifications, Mr Levacy makes it easy for readers to confound basic notions of the Vedic Tradition (e.g. karma, meaning "action" as Mr Levacy correctly relates, and the traditional doctrines of transmigration and metempsychosis, combined and confused in the new age dogma of "reincarnation") with distorted counterfeits like Ms H P Blavatsky's theosophism and its derivatives.

    3. Several of the nice images represent the consciousness of the Rishis and others, e.g. telescopic visions of the solar system, in a way that exclusively reflects modern occidental mentality.

    4. Judged by this book, Mr Levacy appears to hold a one-sided Vaishnaite, perhaps Krishnaite perspective of the Vedic Tradition. He mentions neither Ishwara, nor Para-Atman, nor Para-Brahman nor the Vedanta perspectives including Them.

    5. Any seasoned professional astrologer like Mr Levacy may include and recommend useful methods and symbols from Western astrology. However, especially in a book on Vedic astrology, he should clearly label such imports. The qualities of the sign of Aquarius on page 105 seem to fall out of the rhythms of the other signs. On pages 121 and 122 the author includes the "heart area" in the 4th house and the "region of the heart" in the 5th house. Cases of mixture of Vedic and Western? In any case confusing for the reader.

    6. Mr Levacy, like any other astrologer, may prefer a particular chart style, in his case South Indian, that he uses exclusively in this book. Nevertheless, he uses terms like "angles" that make more sense in North Indian style charts. Why not include several examples of North Indian and some of East Indian and Western as well? The chart the astrologer is regarding on page 242 under "Keyword Matching" has only 8 sectors, 4 missing!

    7. Mr Levacy often mentions different views amongst Vedic astrologists on certain topics. He would thus do well to include an overview of the important schools of Jyotish.

This good book can get a bit better. Best thanks and wishes to Mr William Levacy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Vedic Influences
It's nice to see other vedic astrologers taking influence from OSFA, a leading pioneer in vedic astrology, introducing illustration with informative writings on the topic to give vedic astrology a more popular appeal..Vedic astrology is so important and we need more books appealing to the western appetite to make it as popular as it deserves to be..

5-0 out of 5 stars its not the vedic astrology that makes it special it is the spiritual depth of it that is brilliant
I once attended your class once at an ACVA conference and really enjoyed it. It had to do with relationship matching. your depth is always good in class. well I just read your latest book vedic astrology simply put and its amazing. I happen to be a vedic astrologer as well and what dawned on me despite my advance nature on the subject is that this book despite being geared to novices is profoundly spiritual. I love your definition of liberation and enlightenment. Your understanding of these definitions and your writings on general indian philosopy gives me hope in humanity and how we can progress spiritually. I think your book is so important for humanity and will have huge impact on America as well. May America open up to vedic culture and its depth and power! You are the first person of western origin that has so openly explained it in such a wonderful and understandable manner that it can have great impact on humanity and the course of this country as well as other nations. Most importantly its a beautiful book on indian philosophy because byusing the systematic and scientific approach of vedic astrology, you can start to unravel the scientific basis behind vedic philosophy. If only academics in religion would now attempt to understand this wonderful science and philosophy of humanity. may they glow in the science and philosophy of light!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book about the stars gets my 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars THE serious astrology beginner book
A definitely good introductory book for anyone considering a serious study of astrology. It grounds the reader by both validating astrology as a form of universal understanding and providing a comprehensive and simple four element explination. This will make understanding the subsequent elements and points in astrological interpretation much easier. It has a "general to specific" approach which aids in making accurate interpretations. This is not a book for the lightly interested or if you prefer the "magazine column" sort of astrology.

The book "Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements" by Stephen Arroyo is an interesting viewpoint of astrology that emphasizes an individual's psychological make-up from an astrological perspective.Published in 1975, Mr. Arroyo divided the book into two parts. The first part he entitled "Astrology & Psychology", which contains eight chapters. The second part he entitled "The Four Elements: An Energy Approach to Interpreting Birth Charts", which also contains eight chapters (numbered from nine to sixteen). What differentiates this book from other typical astrology books is that it is not merely a look-up table for trying to interpret a person's birth chart. In the first part, Mr. Arroyo compares the works of various psychologists (such C. G. Jung, Sigmund Freud and O. Hobart Mowrer), physicians (such as Alexander Ruperti), philosophers (such as L. L. White, Hans Stossel, Irving F. Laucks and Pascal), biologists (such as Père Tielhard de Chardin) and writers (such as Goethe) with various astrologers (such as Dane Rudhyar, David Hamblin and Marc E. Jones), mythological experts (such as Joseph Campbell) and people claiming clairvoyant abilities (such as Edgar Cayce). From these (and many others whom I have not named), Mr. Arroyo creates a synthesis to describe a more humanistic and holistic approach to both psychology and astrology, and encourages psychological counselors interested in astrology to utilize tools from astrology to assist in understand their patients. He also lays the foundation for viewing the zodiacal signs with regard to the seasons of the year in which they fall with their corresponding psychological meanings.

In the second part, Mr. Arroyo describes various astrological components, such as the signs of the zodiac (from a more elemental perspective), the planets (from an "energy regulator" perspective) and the houses. He emphasizes that a simple mechanistic approach of chart interpretation often falls short when the impact of the elements themselves are not fully taken into account, as well as not taking into account how particular individuals may make decisions that overcome what might otherwise may be misinterpreted as "difficult" aspects, when they might actually be good. His descriptions of the elements were well thought out, as were his discussions of elemental imbalances. In the final two chapters, he touches briefly on chart comparisons between people and the houses.

Overall, I found "Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements" to be a very interesting read.I rate the book with 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning some basics about astrology. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Takes a long time to get to the Nodes
I bought two books on the nodes. One by Jan Spiller and this one by Elizabeth Spring. The one by Jan Spiller was much more straightforward and easier to read. But, I got more out of the Elizabeth Spring book as far as my personal chart. However, my main issue with Spring's book is that it is not easy to follow. It is very clear that she is a psychologist and that she's an academic. This book uses a language that other academics and psychologists will relate to, but John Doe on the street will have trouble getting through this book. I kept wanting to skip whole chapters and get to the meat of the story. I had to force myself to go back and read everything.

Spring doesn't get to the North Nodes until the end of the book. Sure, there is useful material in the book on Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. I highlighted a couple of things in those sections, but what I really wanted to learn about was the North Nodes. The book also shares a lot of her personal story. That's what about 70% of the book is about. And, it's not translated in a way that easily relates to the north nodes.

If you've read her blog, you'll find a lot of the articles in the blog are the same material that is listed in the actual North Node chapter in the book. So, this might be a repeat of information for those who are subscribers to the blog.

It is obvious that Elizabeth Spring knows a lot about psychology and about the North Nodes, but I would have loved to have more detailed info on the nodes rather than a book that is mostly about other things and mentions the nodes in the intro and a couple chapters at the end.

The other issue for me is more of a personal one. I didn't get much for my personal chart out of either book. As a libra rising with a North Node in libra in the first house (ruled by Aries), there is no clear cut answer to the mystery of my North Node. My North Node is in a house ruled by my South Node. So my situation is more of a weird blend of Libra and Aries as opposed to what most people reading this book will encounter. I think the book will be more useful for doing other people's charts.

If you decide to purchase this book, purchase it along with another North Node book or purchase it because you like the work of Elizabeth Spring. But, if this is your only book on the North Node, you might be disappointed with how little is actually covered regarding the North Node. I think the book has value, but perhaps the publisher should have given it a different title to reveal what material is actually discussed in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The cover was the best part.
The book wasn't as informational as I had hoped. And it would have benefited from a much tighter focus on the title subject. My expectation was to have a resource for supporting my application of the North nodes in guiding both my self and my friends on their soul journeys. Instead I found out a whole lot about Elizabeth's journey and very little else. Her blog is well written and focused, so I expected that her book would be of the same caliber. Instead it came across as a compilation of disparate essays that had been composed from personal journals and memoirs.

Perhaps I assumed too much based on her strong connection in her online material between the mythology and symbology of Jungian archetypes and the astrological worlds? She makes passing notes on these much stronger stories and then segues back into her personal views.

This book might be helpful to people who are just approaching the topic and her personal revelations may help others to understand their own. I appreciated the brief tour of the outer planets and thought that her conceptualizations were strong, but I was surprised as the title and cover didn't mention these other influences.

Maybe the title was misleading and should have stated something closer to "A brief introduction to astrology and patterns of human development", although that also promises something that might be broader and well researched.

By note, I've found the works of Jan Spiller on the North Nodes to be much more information packed and useful as reference books.

5-0 out of 5 stars North Node Astrology: Rediscovering Your Life Direction and Soul Purpose
After studying astrology for several years and still not really understanding the depth of each polarity, this book explained very gently and clearly the definitions of the nodes as well as how important they are in a reading. North Node Astrology: Rediscovering Your Life Direction and Soul Purpose is easy to understand through the uncomplicated language Elizabeth Spring uses. Definitley a must have reference book.... one that I will read more then once. Thank you Elizabeth Springs. I look forward to reading more from you.

By: Linda George, Author and Astrologer

From the moment I read the first line of Elizabeth's book, I was captivated.

This woman is utterly gifted with the capacity to grab you and pull you in.

With her lucid and eloquent explorations of the truth of evolutionary astrology; the symbolism of the North Node is brought to life in way that is intelligent, compassionate and insightful.

The cosmic language of astrology is symbolic of the deepest truths of our human condition and Elizabeth seamlessly weaves her profound knowledge of astrology, with real-life explanations that will give you `truth-bumps. You will know the truth when you read it.Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A changed perpective.
There are a lot of things about this book that I like. She maintains a good pace and answers back to astrological debunkers, but the main thing that is appealing is her extremely clear presentation of the material. She is able to present astrology in a way that clearly reflects the subjects deep philosophical roots. Her inclusion of Jung is exactly what karmic astrology needs because it reflects the amount of thought that does go into esoteric astrology.

The title of this book is a little misleading. The actual descriptions of the nodes does not begin until page 165.Chapters 4-9 are actually entirely on the outer planets. The chapters, in my opinion, are worth reading, but they don't actually talk entirely about the nodes. You basically have to figure out what happens if one of the outer planets conjuncts or aspects a node because this book doesn't explain that in any detail. I agree with one of the other comments; the book is slightly off topic at times.

My orignal review was that the book was fair.I have since changed my opinion after reflecting on my north node for several months.I was uncomfortable with this type of astrology because it seemed damaging to tell people to avoid certain behaviors. After much consideration, I have found that I actually have much more affinity with my North Node than I do with my South Node.I would honestly say that of all astrology books, this book in the long run changed my life the most. I stopped doing my South Node and it wasn't painful once I recognized that I didn't want the behaviors in the first place. This is a great author. She has a lot to contribute.

With its lavish color illustrations, detailed discussions of astrological techniques, and comprehensive chart building tools, Parkers' Astrology is an outstanding book for any serious student of astrology. The husband and wife team of Julia and Derek Parker reissued this edition that offers many new components, such as the recently discovered comet/asteroid Chiron and its eccentric orbit. (For example, when Chiron is in Aries, the typical Arian could experience considerable restlessness.) It also includes new discussions on eclipses, Relocation Astrology, and Horary Astrology (which focuses on where and when a question is asked, rather than a birth chart). The first half offers rich color graphics and compelling narratives about the 12 sun signs, various chart reading techniques, and how astrology influences sexuality, health, business, and family. The second half delves into the nitty-gritty work of astrology and is downscaled to three-color visuals. It includes a hefty 150-page section on "The Planets at Work" and a 75-page section on astrological tables. The 1994 edition was faulted for being too difficult to build a chart from. Hopefully, astrologers will find this revised edition more accessible and consistent. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The astrological cookbook
I don't believe in astrology. It's a silly superstition. It doesn't matter that Isaac Newton was an astrologer, or that Ronald and Nancy Reagan used it to win the Cold War. It's a silly superstition nevertheless (almost as silly as the SDI).

However, if you are interested in all and everything about astrology, this book is as good as any. It's essentially an astrological encyclopaedia, containing all the information a budding astrologist might need. So whatever you do, don't send it to Richard Dawkins!

To start off, "Parker's astrology" contains the inevitable information about sun signs (birth signs). For the nth time, we learn that Arians are enthusiastic and goal-directed, Gemini are fickle, Virgoans are shy and practical, and Pisceans are out there. No news here.

There is also an extensive section on the planets (in astrology, the sun, the moon and Pluto are also planets). What does Venus signify in the first house? What's the meaning of a negative aspect between Mars and Saturn? What if Uranus is close to the ascendant? And what about "the Saturn return" or "the progressed sun"? Almost every conceivable planetary position in the horoscope is covered.

A more technical section shows the reader how to cast a horoscope. An ephemeris, sidereal times and information on houses for northern latitudes are included. In contrast to some of the negative reviewers (who do believe in astrology), I actually managed to cast and interpret a horoscope with the aid of this book. Unsurprisingly, the horoscope confirms that I'm crazy! It also contained the following piece of advice: "At your age, it might be socially disastrous to have an affair with a high school girl". Well, thank you. Otherwise, love signs are only briefly covered, which may disappoint some readers.

Here and there, there are more obscure pieces of information. Did you know that Oxford, Mexico City and Mecklenburg are ruled by Capricorn? Poor Richard. I mean, he's an Oxford don. Potatoes are also ruled by Capricorn, and so is hemp and the coastal region of ex-Yugoslavia! And, naturally, goats. By contrast, Aquarius controls Moscow, Israel, Iran, orchids, lime fruits and aluminium alloys.

Much of astrology these days is very new agey. "Parker's astrology" takes a more traditional approach. No Jungian archetypes, no nebulous intuitions. Planet X in sign Y means Z, period. The authors clearly aren't Pisceans. This "cookbook approach" is rejected by many astrologers, to whom astrology is rather a new agey self-help technique. By contrast, the case studies included in this book are very fatalistic. If you have a lot of negative aspects in your horoscope, it's more or less inevitable that you become a gambler, an addict or very fat. By contrast, positive, successful and balanced people have a lot of positive aspects in their horoscopes. Ironically, the worst critics of "Parker's astrology" might actually be...other astrologers.

This review is based on a Swedish translation of the 1991 edition. However, the 2001 hardcover edition sold by Amazon seems to be essentially the same book, with some new information on Chiron (a dwarf planet or asteroid) and comets.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome !!!
This book is amazing !! I'm a beginner in astrology and this book is perfect for me because the way the wisdom that is explained throughout its pages is incredible easy to understand because the authors guides you in a step by step process that in a couple of weeks you begin to understand and read your own birth chart. Julia and Derek WELL DONE !!

2-0 out of 5 stars The superficial "phone book" of astrology
Parkers' Astrology is hard to miss: big & bright, it gives the impression of being the all-in-one "phone book" of astrology that we've all been looking for. And even a casual glance at its contents would seem to confirm this, as it appears to cover every angle of the field imaginable.

But it doesn't. In the least.

The first half of this tome is a little bit of everything about astrology... with the emphasis on "little bit". It covers all the basics, but some of them so fleetingly that you'll find yourself going to the index to see if they ever get mentioned again.

For example, retrogrades get only a tiny little blurb. Out of an oversized 496-page book. The same with the MC. And the list goes on.

It also includes an extremely confusing "do it yourself" guide to creating your own chart. Which is actually pretty irrelevant in light of the many free websites out there that can draw up your birth chart for free... but again, you'd think that a book this big (which is evidently the culmination of years of research & knowledge) would be able to explain such a central aspect of astrology far more pragmatically.

The rest of this first half of the book strikes me, honestly, as filler and speculation. There are a few things worth considering, but they tend to be as confusing as the rest... with lots and lots of big glossy drawings to take up space.

The second half of the book, though, is the real let-down: while it appears (at first) to be an unbelievably all-inclusive listing of every aspect & placing of all the planets, it is in fact a vague overview fit only for beginners. At best.

Let me explain, especially to the many who I suppose do use this book as a main reference: instead of listing even all of the main aspects, it simply breaks them all up into conjunctions, positives and negatives. That's right, even the 496-page übercomprehensive Parkers "authority" doesn't bother to specifically list squares, trines, sextiles or even oppositions.

Or the asteroids, for that matter. Chiron does get its own comparatively small section, but anything "smaller" is just plain ignored.

And on top of this almost shocking vagueness, the authors take it upon themselves to imbue you with their political agenda. Constantly.

One of MANY examples from the book, this is the "description" of Neptune in Capricorn: "Here Neptune is in an earth sign, and so the vital issue of the Earth's resources, of the harm that has been done by their exploitation, is powerfully focused. We hope we can save the planet, but it will be up to the people born in the 1970s and early 1980s to do so - to right the wrong of many earlier, less caring generations".

And they say that same thing again... and again... and again. Throughout the entire book. Which has what, exactly, to do with astrology? I bought this volume to interpret my birth chart and to learn about myself, not to be indoctrinated by people with a political axe to grind.

But it's not really all that surprising. I mean, the authors (very unprofessionally) whine about scientists who don't believe in this stuff... and make themselves appear even less worthy of respect in this process. It's childish.

I hate to knock this book. I really do. It was my essential starting point in this field, but I just kept finding myself more and more disappointed as I went along... first by the not-so-subtle agenda of the authors contaminating every corner of the book, and later by the simple reality that it flat-out ignores huge segments of its own subject material that were apparently considered "unimportant".

Being generous, I'll conclude that this is a beginner's book. And even then, only in the knowledge of its severe (and deliberate) limitations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good buy! Although, some parts of it are hard to follow.
If you are good at math, this would be a good book. I'm not, but I could still follow how to make most of my natal chart information. It is a great reference book, and I use it often to look up certain characteristics. A great book to have!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Astrology Bible
Yes, if one were looking for an astrology book that taught one accurately how to calculate a chart, this one would leave you in the dark. However, if one is just using this as a reference to a ready made chart (and there are many internet sites that will do this for you for free. See Astro Dienst) this is a very thorough and informative reference. Before buying any astrology book (of which I own many) I always check to make sure the descriptions are accurate for my own personality before purchasing (you'd be surprised that a few books I've found miss the mark). Parker's offers some interesting insights on interpretation that vary from other sources. For example, in the rising sign readings (hidden somewhat after the general sun sign readings with the interesting illustrations), they touch a little on the descendant's role. It brings a whole new perspective to the way I used to interpret rising signs. In interpretations, Parker is complete to the nth degree. The large charts in the back, also, has saved me gobs of time from having to log onto my computer and look up individual planet placings of friends and family I couldn't remember. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for beginners
When I purchased this book, I was under the impression that it was more in-depth than it actually is. After receiving it, I was disappointed. This is essentially a thin - though very well written - introduction to karmic astrology, written mainly for readers who are unacquainted with the concept of synastry. As an astrological primer, it does not provide an extensive breakdown of synastric aspects between two charts, or mutual planetary positions.

However, what it does provide is very thoughtful and useful insight into the mysteries of karma and reincarnation from a kabbalistic viewpoint.

From that standpoint, a very good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walk the Nodal Path.....
When I was first learning Astrology, there were nota great deal of user friendly books out there....Now that I help other people with their Astrological studies, I look for books that both beginners and seasoned Astrologers will benefit from.....This book is perfect for that...

Students want answers that they can relate too....they want toFEEL where this piece of the puzzle fits in their lives....They can take this info and place it their own personal realm......This fits there why? One piece touches another piece, which then touches another...The whole picture starts to make more sense, it comes into focus and all of a sudden, we have an understanding which was not there before.

Use this book to create your own work of art....this book makes reality more comfortable than fiction.....It's all really easy when you can SEE it.....It helps to touch what you're feeling..

5-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a dream!
This is so far the best book I have read on astrology.
It reads like a dream and it flows with love from Ruth's heart, you can feel the love that went into getting this book out.

I got so much from this one book more than I have from many other astrology books that I have read, which seem to come more from the mind, or the intellect rather than the heart.

If you have been wondering why this karma? Or what does this experience mean to you in this life, this book definelty gives a good starting point to understand and balance your karmic purpose to yourself and others around you. It really allow oneself to accept karmic responsibility whatever the dual nature of it maybe in progressing towards resolving them, at least for me it did wonders!

    Enjoy this book.

Gary Goldschneider is a fantastic astrologer and author. I own three of his books, The secret language f birthdays, Personology and this one. All of his books are different but equally practical and wise. This one in partticular is great! For example, If you have a boss that you don`t know how to handle just ask him his birthdate and look it up in this book, it tells you everything you should do. How to handle, motivate, give good and bad news, travelling, etc with your boss. It has three sections to every zodiac sig, Work, Friends and Family and Love. This book is one of the best beginner books to Astrology I have read.I began my study of Astrology with Tetrabilios by Ptolomy and got lost as you can imagine. After having read this book, it is much more clear and I am better able to both read and understand Ptolomy. The only thing I would have liked would have been more of a comparison of the different house systems, though I appriciate the author at least naming a few.I am now off to learn more about the different house systems and would highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in Astrology.
