Excerpt: Old Forest Arboretum of Overton Park -Conservation of the Old Forest began in 1901, when Overton Park was created when the 342 acres (1.38 km) Lea Woods was purchased by the city of Memphis. 172 acres (0.70 km) of its original climax oak-hickory cover was preserved as the Old Forest. Plant taxonomist Dr. Tom Heineke was hired by Memphis to inventory the Old Forest in 2008/09. Large trees measured for possible inclusion as Tennessee Champion Trees included a 27-inch diameter (DBH) black cherry, a 46-inch southern red oak, a 62-inch shumard oak, and 9-inch pawpaw. A total of 332 flowering plant species were recorded in 85 families; three-quarters of the species were native. Heineke's management recommendation was removal of evergreen exotic species, such as Chinese privet and pin cherry, which are severely competing with native vegetation. During the development of US Interstate 40 through Memphis, TN several acres were to be destroyed to make way for the new highway. A grassroots organization, the Citizen's to Preserve Overton Park, rallied to protect the forest. In Citizens to Preserve Overton Park v. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5824019 ... Read more

Excerpt: Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum (733 acres) is a notable, nonprofit garden cemetery and arboretum located at 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio. The cemetery dates from 1844, when members of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society formed a cemetery association. They took their inspiration from contemporary rural cemeteries such as Père Lachaise in Paris, and Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. On December 1, 1844 Salmon P. Chase and others prepared the Articles of Incorporation. The cemetery was formally chartered on January 21, 1845, and the first burial took place on September 1, 1845. In 1855 Adolph Strauch, a renowned landscape architect, was hired to renovate the grounds. His sense and layout of the "garden cemetery", made of lakes, trees and shrubs, is what visitors today still see. In 1987, the association officially changed its name to "Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum" to better represent its remarkable collection of both native and exotic trees, as well as its State and National Champion Trees. On March 29, 2007, the cemetery was designated a National Historic Landmark Grave of Salmon P. Chase at Spring Grove Cemetery.Spring Grove encompasses 733 acres (2.97 km) of which 400 acres (1.6 km) are currently landscaped and maintained. Its grounds include 12 ponds, many fine tombstones and memorials, and various examples of Gothic Revival architecture. As of 2005, its...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4041214 ... Read more
