5-0 out of 5 stars Greatintroduction book for the hobby
If you are interested in owning a tarantula or are new to the hobby I highly reccomend this book.It is well writen to the point and covers a lot of BASIC care information without getting to scientific or to historical.Great pictures and it has a pretty good section on different tarantulas in the hobby (talks about the temprement, housing, etc,) which will help you to choose what tarantula is right for you. This is a must for any tarantula hobbyist.Well worth your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
Whether new to having a pet tarantula, or a little further along in the hobby, this is a great book to have on hand. All the basic questions/concerns about keeping a tarantula are well-covered in this book. There are also many beautiful color photos of tarantulas that will make you want to keep expanding your collection! There is far less information on keeping other spiders and scorpions, but it is still very helpful if you are starting out. ... Read more

Product Description
YOUNG READERS WILL LOVE this first glimpse into the creepy, crawly, complex world of spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks in this latest title in the About... series. Author Cathryn Sill explains in easy-to-understand language what arachnids are, how they live, what they eat, and how they reproduce. Wildlife painter John Sills' detailed realistic illustrations reflect the diversity of the arachnid population--from the poisonous Brown Recluse Spider to the innocuous Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion--and present each in its natural habitat. An appendix, which provides further detail on the arachnids portrayed, will inspire young readers to learn more about these fascinating, often misunderstood creatures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to arachnids!
Great book, as is the whole series.Good way to introduce young children to spiders without fear/negative mythology.Well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise and wonderful
Young children will learn and retain more about arachnids from these spare pages, than from any other introductory picture book on the subject that I' ve seen. Using the same simple language and up-close "in the wild" illustrations of earlier books in the "About" series on birds, mammals, reptiles and so on, "About Arachnids" answer all the basic questions inquisitive pre-schoolers might pose when first engaged by the subject of arachnids, i.e., spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks. Its simplicity is beautiful. Rather than give a lecture on the scientific classification or various species, the first page boils it down to just four words -- "Arachnids have eight legs..." accompanied by a beautifully rendered close-up illustration of two Brown Daddy Longlegs. The thought continues on the next spread, depicting a color-camoflaged Desert Tarantula: "...and two main body parts." Other fascinating species are selected for inclusion, from the crablike Spiny Orb Weaver to the daring Jumping Spider. Children will naturally want to know more about these mini-beasts, so the creators have included a four-page afterword that pairs a paragraph of data with a repeated black-and-white sketch of the arachnid. Best, the author avoids unnecessary drama - and, in fact, judgement of any kind - when it comes to such much-maligned crawlers as the black widow, tarantula and deer tick. Rather, the conclusion calmly, rationally states "Some arachnids may cause harm [Brown recluse]...but most are helpful and should be protected." Wise and wonderful. ... Read more

Product Description
With around 11 distinctive lineages and over 38,000 species of spiders alone, arachnids are an amazingly diverse group of invertebrates--and with names like the Goliath Bird-Eating Spider, the Tailless Whip Spider, and the Harvestman, they can be both spectacular and captivating. Most books about arachnids focus on spiders, neglecting scorpions, ticks, mites, wind spiders, and other fascinating yet poorly understood groups. This adventurous volume summarizes all existing knowledge about each major type of arachnid, revealing their secrets through detailed species accounts, brilliant photographs, and a compelling cast of eight-legged characters. It examines the anatomy, habitat, behavior and distribution of each lineage, from the garden spider to the death stalker scorpion and even a species of mite that lives inside a monkey's lungs. Drawing on the vast resources at London's Natural History Museum, Arachnids spins a sensational tale, debunking common myths and delving deep into the lives of these bizarre and beautiful creatures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A truly magnificent book...
As a college student deeply interested in entomology, I ordered this book to get a light but thorough introduction to the arachnids. It gives a section to each order, beautiful pictures and lots of info. What is great is that, as the description says, it gives equal and thorough treatment to all the orders. Exactly what I wanted!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Creepiness!
I love spiders and I saw this book advertised in a photography magazine, so I had to pick it up. All I can say is...Wow! The photography is awesome! And, the text is very informative. While one can never have too many spider pics, I was also fascinated by all the other arachnid species out there. And, I even discovered information on book scorpions, tiny scorpion-like arachnids that I'd often found living in books on my shelves that I never knew what they were.

This is a book I turn to again and again for an overview of the arachnid world. While it would not be recommended for use as an identification guide, it is a wonderful book about arachnids. And, it would make the perfect gift for that spider/scorpion/mite/etc lover in your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book series for kids
My son does not like reading very much but these really keep him interested. The only problem is they keep making more so I have to buy all of them The good thing is they are long enough to get your money's worth and if the whole series was one book like the Harry Potter series it would be intemidating to slower readers. They would be perfect for a boy age 8-11. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Arachnid Army Book
I bought this book as a reference to write a letter to Markosia Comics about their Starship Troopers comic book. (They claim to use Starship Troopers Miniatures for resolving their combat sequences.) In that limited capacity, it was fine.

I was not all that impressed with the game itself. The book was entertaining in its own right. For someone who LIKES this particular minitures game, I think that they will be very pleased to own this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Explore evolution by comparing the anatomy of different species as presented in the many books in this collection. In this book, full color photos create a visual dictionary of the key external anatomy of a spider (arachnid) including its legs, abdomen, cephalothorax, eyes, jaws, pedipalps, and spinnerets. The left page of each 2-page spread has a photo showing the anatomical part (e.g., the spinnerets) in full color while the rest of the spider is shown in muted shades of gray. The right page presents a clear definition of that part with the defined term (e.g., spinnerets) printed in red. This book is designed to meet the developmental needs of elementary-aged children. The title is in lower case so as not to discourage young readers. When you open the book, you arrive directly at the content; the copyright and ISBN information appear only on the outside back cover so it does not distract or discourage emerging readers. The outer corners are rounded to avoid tactile distractions. It is also sized for children's hands and the spiral binding is specifically used so that the books lay flat when open, allowing children to work with them freely. The external parts books inform and inspire children on a path of scientific discovery. Designed by an AMI Montessori Teacher with the support of a Zoologist and a team of teachers/teacher trainers, it is a standard material in Montessori classrooms. ... Read more
