David Lytle, Food and Drug Administration [Return to TOC] The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) has developed laboratory test methods to determine the amount of penetration of viruses through holes in condoms (and medical gloves), using conditions that simulated or exaggerated those expected in actual use. We determined the frequency with which condoms might pass viruses and the amounts of passage in each case. Extrapolating these laboratory results to the passage of viruses in semen during actual condom use allowed us to analyze the relative importance of breakage compared with the importance of large (an observable water leak) or small (unobservable water leak) holes. We conclude that the risk of exposure to a sexually transmitted disease (STD) virus in semen during latex condom use primarily results from breakage of condoms, and not from holes in condoms. We also concluded that most condoms neither leaked nor broke under our laboratory conditions, and were therefore very good barriers to viruses.
