Advantages of Java include portability, modern object-oriented technology, and in-built support for thread parallelism, although there is a perception that it lacks performance relative to other languages. The purpose of this workshop is to enable, firstly, computational scientists to report experiences in using Java for computational science and high-performance computing, and secondly, researchers in high-performance Java to share recent advances with the computational science community. Topics will include applications, performance and benchmarking, parallel computing, and supporting technologies. Call For Workshop Papers This is a general call for papers about Java in Computational Science. We invite papers involving the use of Java in developing and supporting scientific applications. There were 20 participants from universities, government, and industry. The course was primarily targeted to students and researchers in chemistry and biosciences. The course taught general skills such as mathematical modelling, numerical methods, use of software, and program development. After the course, the participants have a working knowledge of the numerical methods used in standard software packages. In addition, they are ready to participate in program development projects, at least on the level of using subroutine libraries to solve specific subtasks of the problem. Also, participants are familiar with the capabilites of Matlab and Mathematica, which are standard tools for prototyping and solving mathematical problems. In mathematical modelling and numerical methods the course emphasized the properties and restrictions of the most important methods. This makes it possible to have some idea of the reliability of results of the standard software packages. A healthy scepticism never hurts...

The Program is a joint initiative between the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and the ANU Supercomputer Facility Click here for information about the objectives and pedagogical aims of the CSEEP project. The laboratory is used both as a graphics laboratory for desktop-scale modelling, and as a front end to the high performance supercomputers at ANUSF to perform "compute intensive" calculations while visualising the data in the lab.
