    5-0 out of 5 stars Great 2-way radios!, August 4, 2009
    IMPRESSION BASED ON EXPERIENCE:
This is my second pair of Motorola 2-Way radios. I have tried other bands like Midland and been very disappointed, but Motorola has never let me down. I needed two extra radios for a fishing trip to Colorado so that my father, my brother, my son and I could stay in touch. I was amazed at how good these radios did in the mountains. At one point I was over three miles away from my father on the other side of a mountain and we could still talk clearly. Now I know 3 miles in not as far as the 23 miles range that is claimed these radios can reach, but if you know anything about how these radios transmit, then you know that for it to transmit clearly through 3 miles of solid mountain is close to a miracle. I have a pair of Midland G-300 Two Way Radios that claim a 10 mild range that cannot even reach 1/2 a mile through forest on straight level ground. I was also impressed with the battery life. Even after a long day of heavy use these units had plenty of power left. One was left on over night after being used all day and it still had power the next day.

Since I want this review to be helpful to people people wanting to buy these, I want to make something clear. The range claim that any 2-way radio manufacturer makes, is base on optimum conditions with no structural or atmospheric interference. In real life you can never expect to get those kinds of ranges out of any unit. Due to the curvature of the earth I would not expect that any radio could reach farther then 10 miles under normal conditions unless each radio is located in an elevated position with a valley in between, such as on either side of the Grand Canyon. So when you buy a 2-way radio, don't pay much attention to the range claims that are made. Just make sure that they will do what you need them to and don't expect a miracle that deifies the laws of physics.

    PROS:
Motorola quality, great range and battery life.

    CONS:
    None that I can find.

    THE BOTTOM LINE:
If you are looking for a good pair of 2-way radios for hiking, camping, fishing or similar, look no farther. If you are looking for 2-way radios for some sort of specialized professional use or something else these may or may not be what you are looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars very satisfied, November 5, 2009
I've never written a review before - but was motivated to write this one. This is a great product. My fly fishing buddy and i use these in the mountains - and they are great. Very clear. My friend even fell into the river, and after drying out, the radio came back to life.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good budget buy, but you're better off spending the extra $20 for the MR355s., July 7, 2010
I bought 2 pair of these radios as well as 3 pair of the MR355s. They cost $20 less, so I could get about 3 pair of these for 2 pair of the MR355s. I distributed them to my supervisors, vehicle operators and field engineers in our open area shipyard.

The reception is fine, although you do notice the clearer sound and slightly longer range of the MR355s (I'm talking only a couple hundred yards longer).

The unit uses the supplied NiMH battery pack or 3 AAA's. Of course, AA's batteries like the ones used in the MR355 would have more power and last longer, but then, the MR355 has more features (like vibrate and an LED flashlight) that use up more power. Anyway, I knew the compromises when I got the units.

However, I wasn't ready for the MH230 to show 2 bars on the battery icon and yet the display wasn't functioning clearly. Some of the LCD lines were very faint or could only be seen at an extreme angle. For instance, the 8 looked like a 9 bcs the left lower LCD bar wouldn't light up. After trying out the features, I fully charged the battery. Wouldn't you know it, at full charge, all the LCD's work. At partial charge (or discharge, as you like it) some of the LCD bars would fade out. This happened with all 4 MH230 radios and didn't happen with any of the MR355s, even as the more expensive radio's would run out of juice. NOTE to Giant Electronics, fix this issue! You're ruining Motorola's rep.

Anyway, we use the MH230 in thick steel crane and payloader cabins, talking to people in the office 700 yards away with a couple 30 foot tall cargo ships and a few dozen welders doing their thing in between. The sound is mostly clear and everyone gets heard. The users wish they had the PTT earbuds that come with the more expensive units, but hey, you get the bright yellow ones, be happy!

The guys who crawl around inside the steel hulls get the MR355s with the PTT, vibra and lights. They're happy too.

4 stars for the unit performance, minus 1 star bcs of the LCD problems at half batt.

Can't complain I'm not getting the 23 mile range, or they would owe me stars. BTW, many 25 Watt vehicle or base station radios with 36 inch antennas won't get 23 miles, so don't expect these reach that far.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Bought As A Weather Radio.....And Saved, September 3, 2009
I'll admit that when I came across these 2 way radios when just browsing electronics one day, I had no intention of buying any. Though my son and I hunt and fish where we occasionally get separated, we always have cell phones along for keeping in touch. Upon closer examination however I was intrigued by the fact that this pair of radios (as well as several other ones within this price range and higher) carry all 7 NOAA weather channels. They are essentially a two way communicator that is a full fledged weather radio as well. This may not sound all that significant unless you happen to own, or are interested in owning a small portable hand held weather radio like some available here on Amazon. The single portable walkie talkie size weather radios on Amazon that don't do anything else but receive weather, are far more expensive per unit than buying two of these two way radios. Simply put, these radios are literally two for the price of one when comparing them to other hand held weather receivers here. Not only do you get two walkie talki/weather radios, but you also get a holder/charging unit that keeps them fully charged and ready for action at all times. They also carry the same alert option that other NOAA weather radios have so you can be advised of dangerous weather in your home, or wherever you happen to take them. I don't really believe that I would recommend these radios solely for the purpose of weather radios if one could honestly say they would never have any use for a two way radio. However it just so happens that when you own a pair of these you would be surprised how often you do find a situation where they come in fun and handy. When my son and I go out in the wilderness now we take these along in addition to the cell phones. They are very loud and clear and never lose a signal like cell phones do. When I am not using them for communication, I keep one on the local NOAA weather station and are continuously informed of the latest weather and advisories 24 hours a day. They get excellent weather reception and besides, there's two of them. When for whatever reason one dies or has an accident, there is an instant replacement ready to take its place. Whether you are considering these radios for two way communication, or just for their weather feature, I highly recommend them. As two way radios go they are very reliable and have an excellent range. And as for the weather radio feature, they are one of the best bargains around... PS: If you are interested in an even cheaper pair of two way radios with the weather feature, check out the Cobra model at the link enclosed. These Cobra radios have a shorter range as walkie talkies but are the very cheapest pair of two way radios with weather that I could find on Amazon. Just $25 a pair as of this review. 5-0 out of 5 stars Team Leader, November 5, 2009
This product works well for the application I needed. I am using 6 of them for communication at a sawmill. The range seems good to 1/2 a mile even in and around large steel buildings. Great for a large group with the privacy channels.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Motorola MH230R 23-Mile Range 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair), December 12, 2009
These are great! These replaced a pair of brand new, cost more, pair of Uniden walkie talkies. The batteries on these Motorala MH230R radios last us for almost 3 days before they have to go back in the charger(they are on around the clock). Please take into consideration this: We turn them on in the mornings, talk maybe 3-4 times a day on them and do not turn them off until we put them back in the charger. The Unidens wouldn't even last 12 hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!!!, December 14, 2009
I bought these for my son's 4th birthday. I read the Amazon reviews before making a purchase and boy does that help. For the money, I highly recommend these 2-way radios. We have been using them for about 3 weeks now and the battery has never run out at the end of each day. We just put them on the charger at night and the next day, they are good to go. Our relatives lives next door, and they have a 2-way so we are able to talk back and forth. It's been so nice for the kids and the adults!! We camp in the summer so I think the kids will get a lot of use out of these at the campground. My son is 4 ad daughter is 6, so they are too young for cell phones - but these 2-way radio's will be perfect for them to stay in touch with mom and dad. The only downfall is the side button was a little difficult for my son to push in order to talk, but he has learned to hold it with both hands and able to push the button fine now. Totally recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars They Actually Work!, April 2, 2010

Ten years ago I bought a pair of FRS radios (I think they were made by Cobra) for a Caribbean trip. They were horrible. The range was limited and the quality of the audio was very poor.

Recently, I pulled the old Cobra radios out of storage to give to our kids so that we could keep track of them in our neighborhood. But, again, the range was limited to only a couple house-lengths and the audio dropped out regularly.

Because of this experience, I assumed that all of these radios were just useless toys. But I decided to give it another shot, so I did my research. I learned that Midland offers physically larger GMRS radios with output power up to 5 watts. And Motorola has more expensive units with 1.5 watts output power. The GMRS output power of these MH230R is only 1.0 watts, so I assumed that the range would again be very limited. I'm guessing that the old Cobra's had the legal limit of 0.5 watts of output power for FRS radios.

But they have a 3-pack of these MH230R radios at our local Costco in Canada (with the Canadian/Costco model number MH370CR). I decided to try them out because of the low price. I bought them thinking that, if the range isn't sufficient, I could easily return them.

After charging the MH230R radios, I gave one to my son and asked him to "go way down to the stop sign" at the end of our road, which is more than 200 meters away (just over 200 yards). The audio was crystal clear and I was surprised!

Then I decided to go for a long walk, instead of driving, to get a hair cut. I walked down the hill from our house to a commercial area about 2 km away (1-1/4 miles). I could still talk to my son on the radios from our living room! Amazing!

Then, the next day, I took my daughter on a bike ride 3 km (2 miles) away. Again, we could talk to my wife in the kitchen. The audio was a little broken up at times, but we could easily understand each other.

Now our house is up on a hill, so the good range is due, in part, to this fact. But given these results, I'm confident that these radios will do their job for the intended purpose - to communicate with our kids as they ride their bikes around the neighborhood and during camping trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really work for us, November 22, 2009
My husband and I bought these because I walk the dog and he tries to follow me in the car as I start to get out of sight at several of our local parks. I also walk around the freeway here in the Detroit area with the dog and communicate with my husband while he is at home. We live right off the service drive for I96 and I walk an easy 1/2 mile out and circle around a few times crossing and recrossing the freeway. It gets very noisy from the sound coming from the traffic below as I cross one foot bridge that is near a high school. We may be shouting when I get to that point, but we hear each other and once I get off the bridge the quiet is striking because the sound is so clear. We tried the Midlands, but I had to return them because it was a total disappointment and since some areas I walk in I didn't want to leave it to chance that he would hear me we decided to return them. He walks with us in the summer weather, but is compromised because of his breathing in cold weather. The battery life is the best I have seen in a set and we have used several throughout the years. As others say they won't give the 23 miles that is stated on the description but perfect for how we need to use them.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed greatly, November 1, 2010
I purchased these radios to use in a residential city environment thinking they would be a good alternative to two cell phones. Instead we found that they would not work within even a quarter mile of our house. I phoned Motorola and was told any obstructions..HOUSES even ... would block their usage and so they are pretty much worthless around buildings. Returning now . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent radio., January 25, 2009
This radio works very well in hilly terrain and is easy to use. Reception is clear. One suggestion: the online product information should indicate that the "R" in EM1000R refers to the fact that the pair of radios comes with a recharging bay (with a slot for each radio). This will make comparison among products clearer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Radio - QT Mode is cool, END Squelch Tail eliminated with CTCSS/DCS code, July 3, 2009
The EM1000R radios are very good. They are good for short range 2-way radio general usage. You must remember that there is NO scramble mode on these radios, so absolutely no possibility of any privacy at all (000%). Motorola refers to the CTCSS & DCS codes correctly as Eliminator Codes. Too many manufacturers refer to them as Privacy Codes (which is INCORRECT). CTCSS/DCS do not offer any privacy at all. They help keep out unwanted conversations from being received by the radio. But do not block or prevent anyone else on any other FRS/GMRS or SCANNER radio from hearing you. The EM1000R has all 38 standard CTCSS tones. And has 83 DCS codes available.

Here are a couple of things I really like about the EM1000R radios:

    - Very good pickup on the built-in MIC
    - Very good audio on the built-in speaker (perhaps the best)
    - the QT mode is very cool. When ENABLED, it prevents other
radio users using the same CHANNEL and QUIET CODE from being
heard by blocking reception of those radios. Very very cool
feature. It blocks the other non-motorola radios even if they
are using the same CTCSS/DCS code. Again, very cool feature.
    - the ALERT button is cool. Its very similar to EMERGENCY
buttons used on Motorola Trunk and Conventional Radio Systems.
It activates the PTT with an ALERT for 8 seconds, then turns ON the MIC
automatically on the affected radio for 22 seconds. And turns
the VOLUME UP all the way on any and all other Motorola EM1000R
radios that are receiving the signal. Then cranks the VOLUME
back down to the regular level after the 22 seconds. Very cool
function/feature. Very well thought out Motorola. Congrats!
    - Weather Radio Alert is always nice, thank you Motorola
    - LED flashlight is very cool, thank you Motorola
    - The many, many ways to recharge the batteries. Way to go Motorola.
    - The END Squelch Tail is eliminated when using either CTCSS or DCS codes on any channel. Hooray, glad to see the END Squelch Tail finally eliminated. Motorola, you are the BEST, thank you. I have been wanting radios that eliminate that darn END Squelch tail. It is so annoying. Thank you Motorola for including this feature in the EM1000R radio!

Now for the things I do NOT like about the EM1000R:

    - No basic SCRAMBLE mode (Inversion Mode would have better than none)
    - Power output is at fixed level while on GMRS channels. Would of
liked to have either HI/LO or HI/MED/LO options while on GMRS channels.
FRS channels 8-14 are locked at 1/2-watt power output on all radios, of course, per the FCC.
    - There is a SCAN/SEARCH feature. No FRS/MURS/GMRS radio should have ever been manufactured with a SEARCH/SCAN feature. It is the reason we have so many problems/complaints with these services. If you want to SCAN, get a SCANNER radio. That is what they are designed to do. FRS/MURS/GMRS radios should have never been made with SCAN/SEARCH feaures. One of the biggest mistakes ever made to these radio services.
That is why we have so much on-air HARRASSMENT and RF STALKING that takes place by your snooping neighbors.

To summarize, I really really like the QT mode. It keeps out non-EM1000R radios from being heard on your radio even if they are using the correct CHANNEL and CTCSS/DCS code. Having a RF power setting would have been nice while on the GMRS channels, to control the power output. And no SCRAMBLE mode means there is privacy from other FRS/GMRS and SCANNER radios. Of course, Audio-Inversion scrambling does not offer much protection from ease-dropping anyway. But it offers at least alittle bit. So, when operating these or any FRS/MURS/GMRS radio, make sure to use CODES, NICKNAMES and do NOT give out REAL NAMES, PHONE NUMBERS, EMAIL ADDRESSES and try not to give out your location. Use abbreviations when possible, and use CODED-LOCATIONs, if you must. Say things like: I am on the A street, or B street, or similar. Remember, there are KIDDIES-PUNKs listening. There are OLD-FARTS and CROOKS listening too, just waiting to use your personal info against you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Free car charger included!, April 11, 2009
These are very nice radios. I am very happy with the purchase.

    Pros:
    - These radios came with a free car charger in the box! The sticker on it said it was for a limited time..
    - They look nice. They have a high quality feel to them.
    - The rechargable batteries included are the 3 AA cell batteries. That's a plus because I can easily use AA alkaline Batteries from the shop if I run out of juice.
    - It comes with built-in LED flash light.

    Cons:
    - The batteries are only 650 mAh Ni-Cd, which are a bit low compared to current NiMH. Maybe I'll throw in a trio of eneloops in if I start running out of battery.
    - The stand alone charger is a dumb charger which I think keeps on charging once full (potentially dangerous). The manual is a bit confusing regarding this fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good two way radios, February 2, 2009
I've been using these radios constantly for a couple months now and I'm very pleased with them. They get very clear reception and are perfect for road trips, hunting/fishing trips, or a way to communicate in a large work environment. The batteries hold a good charge, and can be used constantly for about 8 hours before they're drained. As the batteries lose juice the radios do lose some signal distance however. These are a much better deal than radios that require AA batteries. A little most costly at first, but they make up for it if you use them a lot. These are great little radios. If you need a set, these are a good option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids, March 31, 2009
I was a bit hesitant that this was overkill and too serious for my kids but was pleasantly surprised:

    pros:
-size works well for even a 4 year old
-the beep after send makes it easy for them
-menu lock makes it very simple for them to just press PPT and not worry about anything else
-rechargeable cradle is easy to use
-manual says must be 5 feet away but seems to work fine even if the kids are right next to each other

    cons:
-auto charger was not a standard Motorola-quality - seemed like a cheap knockoff

    Overall, very highly recommended.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Motorola EM1000R 20-Mile, October 11, 2009
I have purchased a total of 5 sets (10 individuals). My daughter and I take my grandkids camping each year and these are so handy. Each person gets their own and they (the walkie talkies) all communicate with each other, as long as their are all on the same channel. My grandkids, ages 16 months, 9, 11 and 13 yrs can all use them. Yes, even the 16 month old can push the button, we just don't know what he's saying, although this is not the fault of the walkie talkie. They allowed the kids more freedom since the cell phones didn't work but the walkie talkie's did, the kids could go exploring and still check-in without having to run all the way back to camp.
They were turned on for approximately 6 hours a day for 3-1/2 days. The little flash light is great, we dont have to pack as many individual flash lights for each kid. At no time during our trip did they not work for us. So far I have found the distance limits to be correct as listed on the packaging. In the city has been about 2-1/2 to 3 miles.
As far as the seller, I flet the price was reasonable, I received my order on time with no problems. I would order from this seller again.

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for - and that's not bad!, June 29, 2009
I would have given these communication devices a 4 star rating however, they do not hold up as advertised - which is not much of a surprise. I took these on vacation with me while traveling from New Orleans to the Smoky Mountains. We took two cars and used the devices to communicate - heck, it saves your cell phone usage! It gets about a mile when the reception starts to get fuzzy; Two miles is pushing it - and this is on straight and open road. Even changing frequencies does not seem to help Unfortunately, the battery on these things goes pretty quick if you are a talker; even being brand new I found that the batteries needed to be recharged daily - about 8 hours with normal usage. If you are looking for a cheap, inexpensive way to communicate between cars while traveling - or maybe just give the kids something fun to play with around the neighborhood, these do come in quite handy for simple communication. Believe it or not, they did the job exactly how I figured they would and they were quite useful for the trip that we took. Had the batteries held up with the excessive talking, I would be giving these 4 stars. If they turned water into beer, I would give it a 5 star - but that's just wishing, isn't it?

    5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be more pleased!, March 27, 2009
We needed a reliable, clear and reasonably priced communication system recently to help us run a huge outdoor event spanning two days. After reading the reviews and the features and specifications on these, I decided that this item fit the bill for us.

The event was a huge success -- and I'm so pleased with these that I'm buying 4 more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than Cobra, October 1, 2009
Design and function are much better than Cobra. Especially the range is longer with Motorola EM1000R. I use it for hiking trip to Angeles National Forest, Yosemite, and San Jacinto Park area. When used with several, meaning with more than two persons and each person with their own EM1000R, we can easily relay the signal and repeat the message down to the last person at the end. Thus, the range and capability is proven for 16 miles round trip trails for 40 members with about 10 Motorola EM1000R amongst the hikers every week on the trails. I highly recommend this over any other products for two-way radio communication.

5-0 out of 5 stars These babies do the job!, April 29, 2009
Since I didn't originally have my GMRS license, I was hesitant to buy these, but getting my GMRS license was a snap online (as long as you are willing to pay the $85 fee...good for five years). These 2-way radios work great! Don't expect a 20 mile range. Expect more like a mile or two. As long as you set that level of expectation, you will be happy with these units. I am perfectly happy with these radios. My buddy and I each have our own boat, and we use these radios to talk with each other when we are out on the water. ... Read more

This radios are great. First thing that on the FRS channel i managed to get around 2 miles in the city comparing that uniden 26 miles radios game me not even half of that. Radios really nice, small in the hand, am gonna be using them for paintball. Only thing i dont like is little pain in the butt weather channel thing. Otherwise these are the best. I had motorolla, few unidens, i had trisquare....So far midland is on the top shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Radios!, November 1, 2010
We purchased these Midland radios for our manufacturing plant. Bought 4 of them on the same day. The radios are just as described and works well in a concrete
building going thru numerous walls. Would certainly recommend and re-purchase this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Buy, October 6, 2010
Got these for paintball / airsoft in the woods. Good clarity. Haven't tested the limits of the range. The battery packs that came with it are NiMH which is perfect for me and my partial charge behaviors. Also the fact you can swap in regular batteries if needed was a good selling point for me. The beeps are annoying but they can be turned off (essential when sneaking around in the bushes).

Please note it really only has 22 channels like all FRS/GMRS radios. The additional 14 channels they boast are just preset sub-channels (privacy codes).

Great but for the price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best 2 way radio so far, June 7, 2010
I currently own a set of Motorola, two other sets of Midlands and this is the newest addition to my already favorite Midland radios.

    This model is different.
The designing is very details and clean looking. Nice, bring LED displays with orange back lighting. This new model gets a new 'much better' roger deep compared to older midlands, which used to be a dragger. Now, it's shorter deeps which I thought was much clean and professional if you're quick talker.

With it's maximum range of 36-miles, when tested, it did get longer range than other typical radios. When I say longer, it's usually around 1-2 miles in the city.

The size is decent with longer antennas with it's range, and that's what you need for better range. With smaller body and smaller antennas, you end up sacrificing a lot as far as its performance and the range.

Overall, this is a excellent, newly designed, two-way radio.

** Note; one other review commented that he used VOX option for baby monitoring but it's actually unrealistic. VOX only picks up close up voices, nothing away unless you're really shouting out. and you probably don't want to place this radio right next to baby's mouth. Not working!! But it's very useful when driving in the car with the ear piece which is included in this purchase. hands free talking is really helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Less than expected. Would buy Cobra from Walmart., August 27, 2010
I bought these hoping that they would have more range than the 20 mile Cobra CXT225 that I got from Walmart for $34 last week. While I'm fully aware not to expect the advertised range (usually divide by 20) these performed worse than the Cobra. Aside from that, the supplied phone/mic apparatus for each is more than worthless.

Compared side by side same conditions as the Cobra CXT225 these were very noisy even close up during transmissions while the Cobras were pleasantly quiet. Midland noisy with somewhat fuzzy voice - Cobra clear of noise and very clear voice.

Midland units were big, bulky and heavy while the Cobras were light, small and comfortable to hold. I ride my GoldWing with a bunch of Ham guys and they have modified radios that will TX on the GMRS frequencies. They remarked how clear the Cobra was and asked if I have "noise cancellation" on them. They don't. They said the Midland was noisy like my experience Midland to Midland.

You can get earbud/microphone sets for the Cobra on eBay for just $5.00 each. I'm keeping the Cobra - light compact and clear.

In the many years I have dealt with Amazon, this is the first item I ever returned out of hundreds of items bought. Not Amazon's fault, just not a good quality radio from Midland.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first time purchase, September 7, 2010
I've never owned a two way radio before and I bought these as my first pair. Overall I like them:

    * I can put in AA batteries for emergency purposes
    * The headsets are a nice addition (I used it to help out with a 5K race... I wore the headset with the handset clipped to my built while I was on my bike.)
    * You can get 5 watts of power output on channels 1-6 (Legally you are supposed to have a GMRS license from the FCC before transmitting at 5 watts). It seems that most of the other two-way radios in this price range will limit the transmit power to just a 1/2 watt.
    * It is nice to have a drop-in charger
    * CTCSS tones along with DCS tones ("Sub-channels" is the terminology in the two way radio world...). The CTCSS tones make this radio compatible with most every other radio out there that has sub-channels (or "privacy codes").

The DCS tones is an added feature that makes these radios a little more unique if you are wishing for something more private (note: radio communications are inherently public... if someone knows what channel you are on and what tone you are using and they are in range, they can listen and transmit back. Most all two way radios use the CTCSS tones for the "sub-channels" and very few use DCS... so if you decide to use DCS tones then the likelihood of someone using their two way radio to listen to you decreases because most other two-way radios don't use DCS).

In comparing these radios to a friend's motorola two way radio, this one feels more solid, although somewhat bigger. The motorola had a swivel on the belt clip and this is a stiff belt clip. Personally I don't mind it being stiff, but some people may prefer a swivel (what I mean is that the belt clip on the motorola would rotate 360 degrees around the radio, kind of like windmill blades rotate around the windmill base).

In the end, I'm happy with my purchase, mostly because the option for the AA batteries the the extra transmit power on channels 1-6.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good radio, work as expected., September 1, 2010
Received these radios yesterday and did some testing today.

Range: (very clear up to 1.5 miles)
With all radios of this type the "32 miles" is a best case given perfect conditions. My wife and I bought them to use when driving two trucks while moving cross country. For this we will need at most a mile range. Using the high power setting and the GMRS band we were able to get close to 2 miles range. This test was done with me in an office building in an industrial park and my wife driving into the city in an SUV. Transmissions started to have a lot of static after 1.6 miles and were lost just before 2 miles.

    Headset/mic: (what you would expect)
The provided headset/mic (2) that comes with the radios work fairly well for a cheap headset/mic.
Fits on either ear and is reasonably (although not incredibly) comfortable.
Sound quality is what you would expect for an included headset/mic.

    VOX: (works like all VOX)
Like all VOX this takes a little time to turn on and start sending. We found that saying "Call " used enough time so that the beginning of our message was not cut off.

    Roger Beep: (LOUD)
The beep is quite a bit louder than the background voice (when using the provided headset).

    Weather radio:
Although this is an extra for me, it is kind of neat and works well.

All in all these are exactly what I expected and I am happy with them.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Midland GXT760VP4, July 11, 2010
The product is good. It's better than my previous hand held radio. The performance on a 2-mile range is absolutely perfect. I'm using this equipment in the mall and it's effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Radios, October 18, 2010
This radio set is perfect for travelling, or for the purposes that we bought the set - which was for our child's 'spy' set! The headset pieces are very well constructed - better than any 'play' set that can be bought (which will only last a day or two). This is such a great value, I highly recommend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great on Road Trip, August 19, 2010
Purchased these walkie talkies for a cross country trip. We used them to communicate between two cars on a trip lasting 4 days from Oregon to Arkansas. The batteries lasted a reasonable length of time and the sound quality was great. Did encountered other people on the channel we were using, but it was no problem to switch to another channel. Cannot comment on the maximum range since we were never more than a mile apart. This turned out to be a great buy and do recommend this product, particularly for the way we used them.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING QUALITY and RELIABILITY, November 12, 2010
I gave these walkie-talkies to my son for his birthday. He and I don't read instructions. Regardless, we figured out how to operate them totally in less than 10 minutes! These are small enough to hold in the hand, easily operate the calling, talk, listen, channel features. We didn't test the, I think, 20 mile limit, but at one block it was fully clear. It comes with a recharger that recharges both units at the same time. While this is great fun for my children and me, it's perfect for adults. With unlimited cell phone calling now available I'm not sure that cell phones aren't even more useful, albeit more costly. I highly recommend these walkie-talkies and I give them a solid, "A".

4-0 out of 5 stars Solidly Good Product, July 15, 2010
I don't know why these 2-way radio companies like to exaggerate the range of the units, but when they list the amount of range in miles in big numbers on the front of the box, that means under ideal conditions like in space from the top of a moon mountain to the valley below. On earth you'll be lucky to get 2 miles, but I found that perfectly adequate for my uses.

Some of the functions (and I read the manual) are hard to figure out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Radio for Price, July 14, 2010
Reception is full of static at less than a mile a way. Bought to communicate with son while he is at nearby park. If the park was any farther away I would be looking for another set of radios.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied, July 13, 2010
Does the job. Mainly we use it as a baby monitor. It works perfectly if you place it correctly. (It has built in voice level detection, and starts transmitting in case of crying.)
It's true range in lightly populated area is 1 mile. Not very impressed, but compared to a baby watcher it's huge.
If I would buy it now I would spend a few extra bucks to have vibrating alert. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product, August 11, 2010
I use them camping to keep track of my grand kids. I wanted a set that was water resistant for obvious reasons. I also wanted max range because I realize that the range drops as soon as any obstacles are in the way. The range of these units in the forest is about 1 mile. Good Product. Only downside, another product made in China.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets..., November 23, 2010
These radios are as good as you can get for this type of system. We used 4 of them for hunting in very dense bush, very hilly terrain. We could cover pretty decent area with these radios, but I wouldn't expect to go much more 1.5km between radios in extreme conditions like that. At home I can get over 3km in flatter, mostly treed area. These seem to be very good quality, and we are happy with them, as long as you understand the limits of this type of system, you'll be happy with these. If you want more range, you can get other models by midland that will rebroadcast, so each radio acts as a repeater. Good radios, good price. The wheather channel feature was nice to have while hunting as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good deal., November 14, 2010
Radios work well and I really like the charger feature. My hunting pal has had radios for years and what I have found out is that we had to pay close attention to the battery levels before heading into the woods as sometimes they would go dead. With the charger they are always fully charged and ready to go. Range isn't great in areas with lots of big hills but if it is flat they transmit a long way.
The price was great for a kit that has all the features that these radios came with.

5-0 out of 5 stars These are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, January 16, 2008
I had purchased theBarbie Chat-with-Me Jelly Talkies Set of 2 - Pink for my girls for Christmas. The things had NO range and were clumsy to use and to top it all off they took expensive watch batteries. After finding these Barbie's going back.

These have a great range good clarity and although small in size are easy to use for my 4 & 6 year olds. And for added fun my husbands radios that we take on camping trips can be set to the same channels now its a 4 way conversation.

I recommend these to any parent looking for a walkie talkie type toy. Have fun with them, I know we will!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift!!, January 11, 2009
My daughter received her walkie talkies for Christmas. She takes one outside with her when playing in the neighbor hood. It is a great way for me to check up with her. It has great reception! My daughter and I are enjoying this very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love these, July 13, 2009
We love these walkie talkies. We had fisher price walkie talkies first and they were awful. Nothing but static & truckers, plus we talked over each other.

The hello kitty walkie talkies are crystal clear, have many channels, an easy to use volume control, and an audible tone when the talk button is released (so the other person knows you are finished).

They also have a musical call button to alert the other person you are wanting to talk.

These work all over our 2600 sq ft house, into the garage and the basement with no trouble at all. My 4 year old daughter loves them and we do too!

5-0 out of 5 stars It actually works, February 17, 2009
Most of the kids' walkie talkies my kids have had don't work, or it's too much static, or it breaks after a few uses. We have had this for 4 months now, and even with my 3 year old stepping on it, throwing it into her toybox, etc., it still works like a charm. The sound is clear and it's easy to use for even my youngest. We are able to hear each other from the 3rd floor to the basement. A surprising great product!

4-0 out of 5 stars new favorite kids b'day present, August 9, 2009
It's cute, it works and it's pretty sturdy. Probably wouldn't do for a macho little boy. Gave it to my granddaughter for her 6th b'day, but her 3 year old brother likes it just fine. It's far more reasonably priced than many others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girls walkie talkies, January 24, 2010
Excellent product for the price. Easy for my daughter to use, good range and sound quality. Kids love them.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work, November 17, 2010
I ordered these for my daughters 5th birthday. Right out of the box after unwrapping them one of the walkie talkies didn't work. I took me 2 weeks to get them sent back. It was the only thing my daughter really wanted for her birthday and it was a big diappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pay a little more and buy something of higher quality and more durability., November 13, 2010
One of the walkie talkies quit working properly after less than a month of use. Now they're a toss. They were fun to play with while they worked. Were easy to use and had good range. Pay a little more for something that will last longer.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good, July 18, 2010
Anyone with kids knows that only time will tell the value of a toy, and very few survive even the first few hours of debut. A review we write the day after our kids start using our toy may be different than one we write a year later. I am writing this three days after my 7-year-old daughter with a 9-yr-old brother and 11-yr-old sister has opened and started using these walkie talkies, which is not too far into the game. However, I compare her usage of this toy compared to a Zhu-Zhu mouse she got and a baseball mitt/glove/net which my son received on the same day. The mouse and baseball stuff were used a single time then put aside, but she is still going strong on the walkie talkies. I rated them 5's on all 3 qualities listed here (sound, ease of use, ???) but felt the need to add another important feature, which is range, and rate it only a 4. The ad says it works "up to 2 miles," which we know of course is under IDEAL conditions which will never exist for anyone in the real world; in fact, we found the toy works up to about a quarter-mile (several blocks) in a residential neighborhood. Had it featured a longer range, we could have used it to keep in touch with the kids at the swimming pool about a mile down the road, which would have compensated for the fact that none of our kids yet has a cell phone. I have yet to test it during a shopping trip at Giant which a bit closer.

    5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT! Best I found. Don;t hesitate - get these!, January 21, 2010
These are great! They work great - distance, clarity, ease of use (7 & 4 year olds were suing them within minutes). if you;re not sure which to get - get these - I am extremely happy with them! ... Read more
