4-0 out of 5 stars Software does what it's supposed to., June 13, 2010
This software does what it's supposed to do, i.e., it works with the Garmin Handheld GPS I bought. The streets and landmarks are accurate, as far as I can tell. And that's what I expected, from what I read from others' reviews of Garmin GPS units and Garmin software. However, it still doesn't do what I really want it to do, which is to allow me to superimpose hiking trails from either a paper map or a .pdf or .jpg file into the software and then trace the trails into the .gpx file. So, in addition to the money I shelled out for the GPS unit and the topo software, I also had to buy a third-party software to allow me to do exactly what I wanted. You'd think that a GPS unit intended for hiking would allow its buyer to do this task, but it doesn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Well, May 10, 2010
This works well on my desktop (MapSource) and GPS (Garmin 76Cx). I like seeing the detail in both. The GPS is a bit slow in processing between zooms and movement. It might not be as noticeable in newer hardware. That's not a fault of the product, though.

I like having state lands (parks and forests) indicated and even many trails. Even the routing is adequate enough that I often keep my City Navigator in the dash and just use the Topo.

I had a problem loading the 3.8G onto a 4G MicroSD. I'm not sure where the problem was, but customer support was helpful in getting me running. I copied to an 8G card and then transferred to the 4G and everything was fine.

Well worth the money for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential for hikers, June 16, 2010
The higher resolution made this a must-have upgrade for our GPS unit. As we tackle NY State's 46 highest peaks, the information about the terrain and distances is invaluable. A quality product that is easy to install and use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but not great., October 22, 2010
I've been using this 24K map to hike in Upstate NY. It does very well in indicating where the trail crosses roads, streams, etc. It's handy and useful. On the other hand, I am accustomed to hiking with those elegant maps produced by the Swiss and Austrians for the European Alps. The Garmin Topo map really doesn't compare to those in beauty and detail. On my alpine maps I can actually locate the big boulders and rock outcroppings that I like to sit on at lunch or when I take my break. I treasure my Ordnance Survey maps of Dartmoor that I use for letter-boxing. The Garmin simply doesn't give that kind of information. It seems sketch-like by comparison. Nevertheless, it is great to have a huge chunk of the northeast stored in my gps. It lives in the side pocket of my backpack, and it's ready to go whenever I have a few hours to spare. I did try using this map to find a geo-cache listed along one of the trails I use. It put me right on top of it. No complaints there.

The instructions for loading the map into my gps unit from my computer were not very clear, so I gave the folks at Garmin a call. They were terrific. They walked me through the process and had me up and running before they left the line. That's a major plus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Garmin 24K NE Topo Map Software, April 3, 2010
Software loaded in computer and was compatible with existing Garmin MapSource software on desktop. Selected maps loaded into my Garmin GPS and functioned normally on the map page. My only negative comment would be the detail of the maps. Detail in regards land types (lowlands, etc.) was not carried over from the original 24K topo maps. Otherwise the maps added much to the funtionability of my handheld GPS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great but........., July 14, 2007
The maps are very detailed and they contain a plethora of POI's (Points of Interest). On very important point though any buyer should be aware of.

You can't download the maps contained on this Micro SD card to your Mapsource Software, which pretty much makes the Mapsource software useless.

I contacted Garmin and the very friendly customer service rep. said that the Micro SD cards maps can't be downloaded off the card on to your PC. She recommended (as I would) that if you want to be able to view the maps on your PC and use the PC to map routes, edit waypoints etc. buy the DVD's not the Micro SD. They are the same price.

Bottom-line. If you want to just pop the card in your GPS device and use it then this item is probably the way to go. If you want to do more, especially with your PC, then get the DVD instead. I wish I had known this before I ordered non returnable software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plug and Play Is The Way To Go!, September 29, 2007
I updated my Garmin Nuvi which had a 2008 NA map using the SD card version, no problems loading. However, I was disappointed to find this map has marginal updates. My home address in a subdivision that is 5+ years old is still not available on the map. Mapquest, Google, even Tomtom all have my street address but not Garmin.Likewise, points of interest that have been around 1 to 2 years were not always found. Again, I checked a 2010 Tomtom GPS and it had the hotels, restaurants I was looking for. With the price of GPS' dropping fast and Garmins lack of most current updates, I probably avoid buying updates from Garmin again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new life for my GPS, August 20, 2009
My Garmin Etrex Vista was great for geocaching but the base map that was provided was next to useless. This card put the whole USA and it's roads into my GPS and improved its function 100%. I have a MacIntosh computer that isn't exactly friendly with Garmin GPS's so this solved the problem by allowing me to by-pass my computer and install the system very easily. Easy to use, accurate and worth the money to get the most out of your compatible GPS Garmin units.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Great with Colorado 400t, July 20, 2008
I own several Garmin GPS receivers and use them for different purposes. I have a Colorado 400T which I use for geocaching and hiking, a nuvi 500 which I use when biking and walking in different cities (a favorite way for me to explore urban areas) and a nuvi 750 for automotive navigation. Each GPS came with it's own map limitations: the Colorado has topographical maps but not the city-level maps that I am accustomed to on my other Garmins; my 500 only has the lower 48 states and on a recent birdwatching and geocaching trip to Alaska I needed to use this GPS in our largest state; my 750's map has become dated and did not include some important highway changes in my area as well as the HUGE changes in Points of Interests that have occurred in the last couple of years.

I had a couple of options in order to keep all of my units up to date a fully functioning. Downloads are both expensive and bothersome so I opted for this little card. It is actually a micro SD with a SD adapter so it works for all of my units (the nuvi 500 for instance uses the micro while the 750 uses the standard SD).

I think that it is important to realize that all databases, even a recently published one, will contain errors. GPS manufacturers are dependent on third party data which might have some info that is dated even when new. However, I have been pleased with the updated points-of-interest and maps on this little card. I have found it to be easy to use and pleasantly affordable compared to some of the other options.

5-0 out of 5 stars City Narigator North America, May 24, 2009
Map works perfectly in my Garmin 705 and in the Oregon.
    Maps are accurate.
Usual Packaged GPS map problem - doesn't always give the most direct route (noticeable especially when you know the best route), but always gets you where you want to go.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Maps, July 30, 2008
Using this product probably could not be more simple, all you really have to do is plug it in. After doing so I was finding Geocaches faster than before and was confident to travel places unknown afore. Not only does this card unlock new details on top of the basemap but many more features I had no idea my Garmin Colorado could do. Bought it from Amazon because they are trusted and only a few bucks off the best price I found on the net. If you have a Colorado I highly recommend this product. I didn't give 5 stars because the maps certainly are not flawless but come close I suppose. My one negative; and this is being very selective shall we say, is because a couple days ago coming back from a hike I called up the nearest gas station and the map was 0.15 mile off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful on road trips, November 13, 2009
This micro SD card by Garmin really expands the capabilities of my Vista Hcx. I've used it on trips to Canada as well as the Northeast and Southwest United States, and it's been almost infallible. The street maps were up to date, even with recent street name changes. The alerts for turns could come a little sooner--if the speed limit is 45 or higher, sometimes the alert sounds when you should already be in the turning lane. Overall, though, a really good and useful product.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2010 City Nav for Garmin, April 25, 2010
If you've used the previous versions/year's updates (V8 and NT) then you'll know how to use this on your GPS - It's easy to install and works great on the Oregon. The Automotive (Zoom) Mode is especially nice as it emulates the screens of Garmins like the Nuvi. With the Oregon, you can switch between profiles (ie. Automotive and Geocaching) to get you close to a Cache and then off-road to the destination.

The only drawback that I see, is that it is based on a 2Gb card when the unit will reportedly handle without issue a 4Gb card. So, you do get a little limited for photo storage or if you're on a long trip/hike and take a LOT of photos (with the Oregon 550T) you might be better served by switching out the Map card for a larger MicroSD.

Anyway it works and if you have multiple GPS units, you can move it from one to the other without unlock codes and so on...So that is nice, now that the GREEDY BUZZARDS at NavTeQ only allow one unlock code per map set. ... Read more

In addition to the enhanced topographic and street maps in Topo North America, your purchase includes a $40 Data Certificate, good for supplementary data as Web downloads. Options include USGS 1:24,000, Natural Resources Canada 1:50,000 quad maps, NOAA nautical charts, and aerial imagery. 4-0 out of 5 stars Alternative to buying MapSource Topo 2008, June 29, 2008
First, I'm not knocking the TOPO US too much. It is expensive and does not have high resolution but it fills a niche. If you need a TOPO map in a hurry, I suppose it is the best alternative.

I've had my Garmin Legend HCx for several months now. During this time, I've hunted for a reliable alternative to TOPO US, rendering 24K resolution and not limited to a few National Parks.

Looking really paid off. The best solution that I've found is the following:

    * Free Maps from USGS Seamless Server (24K TOPOs as GeoTiff files) $0
    * Any graphics editor program that can handle .tif format $0
    * Mapwell (Basic) Google to find (includes raster/vector conversion) $45
    * TrackMaker (free version) Google to find $0

    Total: $45

    Process:
    1. Search, select, download GeoTiff map from USGS Seamless Server (15 minutes)

NOTE ADDED 4/2010: Mapwell Basic can now read coordinates on GeoTiff files, making steps 2,3, and part of 4 obsolete.

    2. Review the .xml data, downloaded with the map to determine the extent of the map: Northwest and Southeast boundary. (5 minutes)
    3. Open GeoTiff file in graphics editor. Save as new .tif file, stripping out the embedded geo data. (5 minutes)
    4. Open the new .tif file in Mapwell. Add extent information from Step 2. Add graphics features and waypoints(optional). Run vectorization option, creating a new set of Garmin IMG files (10 minutes - more if you want to add your own art)
    5. Upload new map set into Garmin. Mapwell has a great Garmin upload/download manager. No need to use Mapsource although you can use it to add Mapsource maps. (1 minute)

    Time burned: 36 minutes

TrackMaker (free version or licensed) is also a great product for creating tracks, waypoints, many more features. It also has a fine Garmin upload/download manager. So you can either load waypoints and features directly into the Garmin or embed them in the map itself while using Mapwell.

The only disadvantage that I've discovered in the process is that Mapwell works too well. That is, the vectorization of 24K maps produces superb quality maps that take 10-20 seconds to render in the Garmin (at 1 mile). The closer in you go, the faster the rendering.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent mapping if you don't require auto-routing capability, August 25, 2007
TOPO 2008 has some good points: it's half the price of most of Garmin's other cartography products, and it doesn't require an unlock code. Read some of the reviews on Garmin's "City Navigator North America" product - there are some real horror stories about the problems people have had with Garmin's unlock code system.
NOTE: In specific discussion of how TOPO 2008 interfaces with a GPS, the unit used in this review is a Garmin 60CX.

What you get with TOPO USA 2008 that's good:
    1. It adds a lot of city streets and county roads that are not included in the base map. However, the positional accuracy of these roads is often pretty bad. But at least having them would probably help you find an address if you got lost in an unfamiliar neighborhood or rural area. Unfortunately though, the road network in TOPO 2008 IS NOT AUTO-ROUTEABLE. In other words, if you try to generate a point-to-point trip route in either MapSource or in the GPS itself, the route will not follow the roads or calculate turns. It will just make a strait line (actually a Great Circle curve) from Point "A" to Point "B". This doesn't prevent you from generating your own routes manually, of course. I guess the lack of auto-route capability is why TOPO 2008 is half the price of City Navigator.
    2. Since TOPO 2008 contains a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the coverage area, it allows you to generate a profile of your hiking/biking trail or road trip route. This profile capability is very nice when comparing alternate routes, and the profiles can be generated and viewed in the GPS or on the PC in MapSource
    3. The outlines of many coastlines, lakes, and rivers in the basemap are very coarse and downright inaccurate - TOPO 2006 offers a huge improvement to these outlines (but does not include water depth).
    4. TOPO 2008 includes thousands of searchable place names and POI's that are not in the base map.

What's not so good in TOPO 2008:
    1. The coverage area is ONLY the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii). Unfortunately, there is no coverage in Canada or Mexico, other than large cities and major highways that are already in the basemap. If you need coverage of our neighbor to the north, the TOPO Canada DVD is pretty expensive at $110, almost double the price of the USA version.
    2. The contour interval is 1:100,000, which is probably fine for planning an automobile trip, but is very coarse if you are doing a hiking or bicycle trip. Garmin does offer 1:24,000 cartography, but it's expensive and covers only a limited set of National Parks. If TOPO 2008 were to cover the whole USA at 1:24,000, the amount of data would probably require many DVD's instead of only 1, and the retail price would no doubt be a lot more, so I guess the 1:100,000 scale is adequate for most users, and certainly more economical.

If you already own the City Navigator cartography, TOPO 2008 might be a nice addition to your chartplotter-capable Garmin GPS, especially if it can display route profiles like the 60CX. However, if your primary need is for automobile routing, and especially if you need coverage in Canada, and if you have a limited budget, you would be better off buying City Navigator if you don't already own it. It's twice the price of TOPO 2008, but has a lot more capability.

NOTE: For some reason, TOPO 2008 includes Alaska's Dalton Highway, from Fairbanks to Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay), yet City Navigator, which costs twice as much and is supposed to offer coverage of all of the USA and Canada, does not.

SUMMARY: A good value at $59.10 if you just want to upgrade your GPS's background map, and if you don't require Canadian coverage. Also a nice add-on if you already have City Navigator, as it allows you to compute road profiles anywhere in the USA (including Alaska and Hawaii). City Navigator does not have a terrain model built in, so it can not show profiles on it's own. For owners of large RV's or people who tow large boat or livestock trailers over long distances, TOPO 2008's road profile capabilities could be a really nice trip planning tool.

2-0 out of 5 stars Garmin Topo US 2008 vs. DeLorme Topo USA, November 4, 2007
I have been using DeLorme Topo USA to create trail routes and waypoints for hiking and backpacking trips for a number of years. I have also been using eTrex for GPS navigation for almost the same amount of time (I am now using Vista Cx). Recently, I purchased Garmin Topo U.S. 2008, hoping to save time to find/create trails and waypoints. But, I was wrong. Although the resolution and price of Garmin and DeLome products are about the same, Garmin Topo U.S. 2008 is a big disappointment. I spend more time with Garmin Topo U.S. 2008 to find trails and create waypoints. Below are my observations.

    - It's impossible to find trails till you zoom in into about 1 mile resolution. Then, you loose a big picture of an entire trail. Also, it's very difficult to distinguish trails from roads and elevation contours - a display contrast is quite bad.

    - Since it does not have a capability of selecting trail segments, it requires to manually creates a number of waypoints to follow the trail, to plot an elevation profile along the trail, and to estimate an accurate trail distance. This is time consuming.

    - It seems that via-points of a trail are displayed with the names in the comment field. Also, the names are not editable. This makes the via-point names/numbers are not consecutive if new via points are inserted later. The eTrex Cx displays the names of all via points and gets quite cluttered.

    - It does not have a 3D display feature. DeLorme Topo USA provides nice 3D plots.

Overall, I do not recommend this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars worth to own, not worth to upgrade, August 20, 2007
The Topo map contains a lot of terrain information that city map does not have.

It contains some (or some part of) main road and fire road, most of the trails hiker actually take, are missing.

But I still find it useful in that, although it cannot lead you on most of the road or ease you ploting the road on your PC during the planning, it can help you track the path you have passed, and gives you a general perspective what lies ahead to reach your destination.

This topo 2008 adds terrain shading (only when looking on the computer, not on GPS device), and has improves street name. For the latter, it is still way out dated or has many errors, that you better not reply on it for city navigating (navigating is not routing)

Note, the map does not contain routing data, so you cannot use it for auto routing on PC or GPS).

4 stars for those who does not own topo map, 2 stars for those trying to upgrade. That's why I give it a 3-star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Upgrade Now, November 30, 2007
This is what the topo software should have been to start. Garmin has updated the topo to properly match the USGS maps. When you are hiking or similar the topography properly represents the actual terrain. A major difference is areas that have significant elevation gain were always improperly represented in the old product. The 2008 version is correct now and you can see ridge lines and valleys as they should be. This was well worth the $ spent and I highly advise that you upgrade today!

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of maps for the price, November 11, 2007
This software provides topo maps for the entire US for less than $60, which seems like a bargain to me. The maps do not have the detail of USGS 7.5 minute series maps but generally have enough detail for hiking, biking, or off-road driving. The maps actually look better on a GPS than on my PC using MapSource, because the roads are better distinguished from the contour lines.
The only problem I had installing the software is that it turns off the detail in MapSource. To correct this you need to go to the View menu and click "Show GPS Map Detail" (Ctrl+G).

1-0 out of 5 stars GarminTopo 2008 Full of Errors, November 5, 2007
After loading Garmin MapSource Topo U.S. 2008 mid-Atlantic region maps into my new Garmin 60CSx GPS I realized that my plotted position routinely had a 300-600 foot error from my known position in the Northern Virginia and DC-metro Maryland areas, over at least a 25 square mile area. When I called Garmin they told me that their cartographic dept. was aware of the problem, and ascribed it to "map digitization" problems. Garmin would not comment on any fixes planned.

A GPS - map system which is routinely in error by 300-600 feet is unacceptable!!! And a GPS company which doesn't take errors like this seriously is not serious about their product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great, a few minor quibbles, March 17, 2008
This is a wonderful addition to my Garmin Venture HC, and really completes the package, since the basemap is not all that useful.

The software took a while to install, and I do have some minor quibbles about the installation. Users are "strongly" recommended to install MapSource into C:\Garmin (come on, people, the Program Files folder has been around since Windows 95). My translation is that if you decide to change the default folder, some things may not work correctly. Also, there was no option to leave the map data on the DVD instead of loading the *entire* 3.5GB database onto your hard disk. But if you've got the available space, it's more convenient to have it all there.

As has been noted before, there are some minor inaccuracies with the map data (from what I've noticed, mostly related to roads showing a hundred feet next to where I'm driving), and for being a 2008 map, it doesn't show the latest freeway construction in my area. But then again, I didn't get this map to show me how to get around town; nonetheless, street data is remarkably detailed for a topo map. Mountains, canals and other features were accurately displayed as I drove past them, including elevation data.

MapSource's archaic and sometimes oddly behaving user interface notwithstanding, it is quite intuitive when it comes to downloading maps. Without reading the manual, it took me all of a minute to figure out how to select map regions and send them to my GPS. Downloading roughly 20MB also didn't take as long as I'd feared, perhaps another minute or two. The area I can fit in my Venture's limited memory also exceeded my expectations: I live in Arizona, which is quite large, and yet I was able to easily download a large swath that includes Tucson, Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Show Low.

All in all, a good product and in my opinion an essential add-on to any Garmin mapping GPS. Subtracted 1 star for less-than-stellar user interface and installation procedure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than useless, January 2, 2008
I would have to agree with "working engineer." This software is worse than useless due to its positional inaccuracy. I was shocked to find that my 76csx showed the location of my house as several hundred feet from its actual location. A downloaded track of a run in a local park showed this same "offset." I tried an experiment: created a waypoint by standing in the middle of an intersection in my neighborhood, then downloading it. The MapSource Topo US 2008 software showed an offset error of about 800 feet. Google earth showed it dead on (so I knew it wasn't a problem with the GPS unit itself). My older version of NG's Topo! also shows this waypoint at its proper location at the intersection. Interestingly enough, Delorme Topo 6.0 has the same offset error as the Garmin mapping software.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate at times, August 18, 2007
I purchased Topo 2008 because it has both road and topo data, and can upload both to my GPS unit. After some use, I found that the maps are off by roughly 1/3 city block (software shows me as just north of where I actually am). Furthermore, I found both gaps (missing stretches of road) and mislabeled roadways when looking at the stretch between I-405 south and Ross Island bridge (HW26) in downtown Portland, OR. The combination of missing roadway and mislabeled roadway in this stretch was bad enough that I had to use MapQuest instead. Hopefully I just encountered the only such case of this. If accuracy and completeness of road data are critical for you, spend your money elsewhere.

I gave it three stars because in all other cases it's been close enough, and I am enjoying getting topo maps into my unit. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great maps, poor backward compatibility, September 9, 2006
UPDATE 1/1/08: I just got a Mac after always previously using Windows. Great news--when I installed this 4.0 software, not only did it work fine, but it also corrected the two most serious objections I previously had with it. I now have no problems importing waypoints from my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx, and the software is now compatible with all the states I own from the previous Version 3 software. I don't know whether this is unique to Mac or whether it now works just as well with Windows, but when I did the installation, it automatically went to the National Geographic web site and downloaded a software update. I still give it 4 stars because of some of the other non-standard user interface choices, but these are easy enough to get used to. I didn't change the rest of the review, so keep this update in mind as you read it.

National Geographic topo maps are great if your understand their strengths and limitations (I have the Nevada version but they all work the same). First, don't expect to import the actual maps into a GPS receiver. These maps are raster-scanned directly from USGS 7.5' topos; GPS receivers use vector-graphic maps that are only available from your receiver's manufacturer (and they are much less detailed than NG maps). But you should never expect your GPS receiver's display to completely replace a paper map anyway. It's too small to show much detail, and if your receiver fails, you'd be out of luck. NOTE: Magellan has just introduced the Triton series, which is the first product designed to import maps from Topo!. This is a great advancement, but I haven't yet evaluated it to see how well it works.

Since these are based on USGS maps, they have the same high quality including tons of detail, but since many USGS maps are more than 10 years old, you won't necessarily get up-to-date information. Since topographic features don't ordinarily change as frequently as man-made features, you're usually OK, but keep this in mind.

These maps allow you do a lot of other things with your GPS. You can create waypoints on the computer, either by placing a marker on the map or by entering in the latitudes and longitudes of your points, then transferring them to the GPS. This is much easier than manually entering the info through your GPS user interface. You can also download tracks from your GPS receiver onto the map to see where you've been. And you can draw intended journeys directly on the map screen, then measure the distance and elevation profile of the route. The elevation profile is a bit noisy, but you get a pretty good idea of how much elevation change you'll experience on a hike. The tool you use to draw the route on the screen could benefit from an improved user interface, but with a little practice you can get pretty good at it. If you make a mistake, hold down the right mouse button to erase the error. One thing I like is that you can print out a custom paper map, and if you print using your inkjet on NG's waterproof paper, you can get a custom color map that really is waterproof. This latest edition is designed to work with USB receivers like the Garmin GPSMap 60-series. This is a tremendous advantage compared to the previous edition. BUT please note that it isn't completely compatible with the new GPSMap60CSx. It doesn't import waypoint names properly, they end up being simple numbers starting at 001. For some reason this isn't a problem with the older GPSMap60Cs.

The main objection I have is that it isn't easily compatible with the previous edition. In my case, I had the prior edition for California, and expected the California CDs to work with the new software. But for some reason they don't. So I have to leave the old edition installed for the California maps and the new one for Nevada maps. Fortunately I can use the USB capability of the Nevada software to download the California waypoints and tracks from my 60CSx. I then have to save the .tpo file, launch the old edition software and pull up the California map, then import the .tpo file. Very inconvenient, but at least there is a way to make it work. I guess they would prefer I buy a new edition of the California maps.

The only other thing to note is that they still haven't completely adopted Windows user interface conventions. For example, there are no scroll bars on the side and bottom of the map to allow you to move the map on your screen. You have to move your cursor to the edge of the map, watch for the cursor to change to an arrow, and hold down the mouse button. The direction of scroll depends on exactly where on the screen your cursor is. Another observation is that there is no EDIT menu, so I can't easily cut and paste data into other applications. But these are relatively small concerns that you can quickly adapt to. All in all this is a very valuable tool that I highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars my opinion after a few hours use of Nat. Geographic Topo States softeware, May 11, 2006
Before I bought this product I found it difficult to find reviews of Nat. Geographic topo state software as well as MapTech Terrain Navigator software, so I am giving this input for future customers. MapTech provides a demo. I'd say I prefer MapTech's 3D to Nat. Geographic's 3D version. Nat. Geographic provides more features such as greater grid spacing options. But don't expect either to print with the resolution of the regular 1:24,000 USGS maps; both software brands have to default to a larger scale to get that kind of resolution and clarity at least with ink jet printers. National Geographic Topo's 50% default setting results in an approximate print scale of 1:31,000 which results in very good clarity. However even at 1:24,000 they are legible (although a bit fuzzy). They will both save you money verses buying the regular topo maps (after 20 or so store-bought maps considering your ink and paper costs) plus they give you advantages if you use a gps unit especially in overlaying grids, trail markers, etc., on the printed-out maps. But don't forget it takes more than (4) 8 1/2" x 11" printouts to match one regular store bought 1:24,000 topo map.

    4-0 out of 5 stars CoupleQuarks, July 15, 2006
I have not used this product extensively but it had proven to be very useful for my needs. I am very pleased with it and only have a couple of comments. It has an excellent search tool and has found almost every location that I have searched on, even some very little and very remote campgrounds. This is what I was mainly interested in as the other software's I have used are very (VERY) limited in this. The only two things that I have noticed is that it does have fixed zoom ratios and the wildlife areas that I am interested in are shaded dark grey when zoomed in which is somewhat maddening. They could have used a lighter grey as it is very hard to see the mapping in these shaded areas. That is the only reason I am dropping my rating down to a 4. This product is very user friendly and I would highly recommend it, so far it has been the best bang for the buck!. Digitizing the trails and creating profiles along with flyovers is as slick and easy as can be. The same goes with plotting GPS points from ASCII onto my TOPO maps or from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mapping tool, March 7, 2007
I recently purchased this software to help design hiking routes for use with my Garmin GPS Map60CSx. It took just a few minutes to learn, and I found it easy to create routes and waypoints. The integration with the GPS receiver was seamless, and the pictures are beautiful. You can build elevation profiles, see your route in animated 3D, and National Geographic's MapXchange server allows you to find and download routes from the web for use with this software. You will have to check and perform the software upgrade in order to integrate with the newest mapping receivers, but this was neither challenging nor problematic. Please remember that you cannot copy the maps to your GPS - only the routes and waypoints. And this software is quite expensive for the limited coverage. I also have Garmin's MapSource Topo software, which has all of the US on 3 CDs for about the same price. But there really is no comparison - you get what you pay for. With National Geographic, you will get high quality maps and an excellent user interface. I actually find it easier to use the National Geographic software with my Garmin receiver, rather than Garmin's own product.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Program, September 23, 2007
This is a good program with many useful features. I use it primarily for hiking and backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas. The excellent quality maps that I can print out are perfect to use in conjunction with my GPS receiver. You can't download the topo maps into the GPSr, but that's okay since the GPSr has such a small screen (and I prefer having a paper map in hand when hiking). The program also lets me plot courses along trails and calculate hiking distances. The elevation profile tool has been very handy and there is an option to include the profile at the bottom of a map print out. My only complaint is that the USGS maps used by the program do not have all of the trails that other paper maps include (but then again, I've found a few trails in this program that aren't on some of my other paper maps). I also save waypoints and courses to a ".gpx" file which I can then import into Google Earth to get a better feel for terrain and vegetation. I give it 4/5 Star because it is not perfect (see above complaint) but it is close. Overall, I highly recommend this program for anyone who enjoys hiking in California's mountains.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Accurate Mapping, July 3, 2008
All information is in USGS 1:100,000 scale for road and very good hiking mapping and navigation. Its all very, very easy to learn and includes cool features to customize your maps like adding notes, showing your trails and routes, elevation profiles for hiking mountains and a 3D feature. This allows you to actually view your route as your travel in simulation at varying angles. The `Search' feature is very handy in locating just about anything you are looking for in that section/region of the map. You can zoom into five different levels of detail and print out any portion of that map. If your GPS allows you to import information, you can upload your personalized map to it. You can also import most GPS information into your computer onto the topographic maps, such as .gpx files and geocache information. TOPO! National Geographic is the best in mapping information for GPS or everyday route or hiking planning.

I had a Magellan Triton that claims you could download the maps to your Triton handheld, but that software is flawed and I had to return the Triton four times. Now that I have a Garmin, I can download info to my PC and use the National Geographic TOPO! information, but I still cannot import maps into my Garmin (just geocache information).

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor support for adding your own map updates, January 24, 2009
If you are going to just mark your route on their maps, look at the elevation profile, print it, etc then the product is pretty good.

The problem comes when you realize that the underlying USGS quadrangles are often badly out of date with man-made things, such as trails and park boundaries. There is no support for updating the maps in the style of the original. Still, you can make passable updates -- just invent your own conventions.

You can merge in someone else's updates -- the problem comes if you then get a revised version of those updates. There is no supported way to do the second merge (i.e. replace the first merge with the newer one), or to back out the first merge (i.e. to remove what the first merge put in without also removing any updates you yourself may have added) so that the newer merge can go cleanly.

Overall a decent product. Plain vanilla out-of-the-box stuff works fine. Trying to upgrade the maps to be truly useful for your area can be pretty frustrating, though.

One thing to beware of: National Geographic is trying to migrate folks to their newer product, TOPO!Explorer. Take a look at *that* product's reviews -- it only gets one star (5 reviews).

5-0 out of 5 stars How To Increase Its Value, October 10, 2008
With TOPO, it makes a big difference if you copy the maps from the CDs to your hard drive. That results in a much faster and better experience. Directions for copying the maps to your hard drive are on the Topo web site. Some reviewers do not realize that.

The digital maps are an extremely good value compared to paper maps!! Live Map Updates is a feature of version 4. You can download the current maps and street overlays for the quads you are interested in! And that is free.

I have used versions 2, 3, and 4 of this product. Version 2 was excellent. Versions 3 and 4 are incremental improvements. On Amazon, it isn't always clear which version you are buying. Go by the dates -- version 4 was released in 2006.

The software is excellent. My only complaint is that it is a bit complicated to install. I don't think it has ever crashed on me. I use it a lot, and discover new features all the time. It is not hard to learn. GPS support is great, in my experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars You Cannot Load These Maps onto Most GPS Units, August 17, 2007
This software looks great. Lots of amazing features. Includes 3-D and Fly-Thru views. It's more detailed than the Garmin MapSource Topo U.S. 2008 (1:24,000 vs. 1:100,000). It is both PC and Mac compatible. Garmin's is only PC compatible. However, you can only use this product on your computer and not on your GPS unit in the field. This is because Garmin will not allow it. You can transfer waypoints and routes but not the maps. According to reviews I've read, the Garmin Topo software is not detailed and not accurate. So, what to do? According to other reviews I've just read, National Geographic has just completed arrangements with Magellan to allow transfer of their 1:24,000 maps to the new Triton GPS that will become availabe in September or October. These new Magellan units are a lot more user friendly than than their old ones. If Garmin won't allow other software vendors access to their product, then they should at least make decent mapping software themselves. I'm going to return my new Garmin GPS and get one of the new Triton GPS units. At that point, I'll probably give this software 5 stars.
