Antes de comenzarlo sab�a que me iba a gustar, porque ya hab�a le�do varias obras suyas, pero nunca imagin� que llegar�a al extremo de no poder soltar el libro ni un minuto, porque una vez que comienzas a leerlo no puedes parar hasta terminarlo. Gabo narra sus historias con tanta magia, con tanto detalle y con tanto cuidado que logra ensimismarnos y meternos en lo m�s profundo del alma de los protagonistas, haciendo que vivamos la historia como si fuera la nuestra.

Brillante equilibrio entre un drama y una obra de humor, August 6, 2001
En una ciudad costera colombiana, entre los siglos XIX y XX, en une epoca en que el colera y las guerras civiles iban desangrando a Colombia de forma no muy diferente de como hoy en dia lo hacen las guerras de las drogas y la guerrilla, tiene lugar esta brillante pieza de literatura, obra del ganador del premio Nobel, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

La persona simplista se atreveria a juzgar la novela apenas como una historia de amor, y ciertamente lo es. Pero tambien es mucho mas. Florentino Ariza y Fermina Daza viven separados durante cincuenta annos, a lo largo de los cuales transcurre la historia. Todo el tiempo, Florentino (un hombre extremadamente dramatico que ama la poesia y esta permanentemente vestido con atuendos casi funerarios sin prestar mayor atencion al calor del sol caribenno) se mantiene fiel al amor juvenil por Fermina que siente por dentro, a un mismo tiempo que vive una vida repleta de las mas descabelladas y comicas anecdotas de flirteo y pseudo-amor.

Fermina... bueno, eso es parte de la historia, y no lo voy a echar a perder, pero les puedo decir que le da mucho trabajo al pobre Florentino a lo largo de esos cincuenta annos, en unas ocasiones a sabiendas, en otras sin siquiera sospecharlo.

En todo momento, con el ir y venir de los personajes que me atrevo a llamar 'secundarios', tales como el doctor Juvenal Urbino, el tio Leon XII o Leona Cassiani, hay un personaje omnipresente, como lo es el medio ambiente que rodea a Florentino o Fermina. Hay incontables y exquisitos momentos a lo largo de la novela en que se solidariza con el estado de animo de Florentino, empezando a llover, por ejemplo, si el se siente triste. La sutileza con la cual Garcia Marquez logra esto es definitivamente un acto de genialidad literaria.

La novela resulta una obra que todo lector esta destinado a disfrutar plenamente: una de esas obras que sin duda alguna aguantaran el pasar del tiempo. No en vano es considerado uno de los mejores libros del siglo XX. Y pueden creerme: si no se rien a carcajadas al menos una docena de veces en el transcurso del libro, les va a costar trabajo conseguir ALGO en la vida que los haga reir.

Con los ojos cerrados: comprenlo, y disfrutenlo.

He leido dos veces este libro y sin duda que la emocion y sentimientos que aflora en mi son indescriptibles. Por medio de la excelente narracion de Gabriel Garcia Marquez uno se va envolviendo en el mundo de Fermina Daza y Florentino Ariza, uno sufre el dolor del amor no correspondido y disfruta del reencuentro despues de tantos a�os. Es una historia maravillosa de paciencia y generosidad, es una historia que nos lleva por los caminos del verdadero amor aquel que espera, aquel que en silencio se va fortaleciendo, aquel que se alimenta de peque�os detalles. Si todos tuviesemos esa capacidad de amar!!!.

This is my second favorite book of all time (the first is One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien A�os de Soledad Spanish Version) by the same author). It tells the story of lovesick Florentino, who has waited for the love of his life, Fermina, for 50 years. Fermina was married to Dr. Juvenal Urbino and therefore unavailable. Their love story began through letters. But then Fermina rejects Florentino because she feels their relationship was naive. She is forced to marry Dr. Urbino by her father. When Dr. Urbino dies, Florentino comes back into Fermina's life and tells her he has waited for her all these years. Then, their correspondence continues and their love grows again.

Garcia Marquez has written an amazing love story that employs elements of magical realism. This only make the story better and even more amazing. This love story is as no other, and only Garcia Marquez could have written such an amzing book. The characters are so well written that they come alive in the pages of this book.

I read the book in Spanish and I reccommend that if you understand Spanish, to read this book in its original language. Although the English translation is good, I feel the Garcia Marquez touch, the "it" that makes this story what it is may get lost in the translation.

This is a book that everyone should read and I cannot reccommend it enough.

Al terminar de leer este libro, me qued� con la impresi�n de seguir ley�ndolo, de querer m�s de esta historia. Quiz�s la esencia de la misma, una promesa de amor que perdura en el tiempo, suene algo cursi para muchos. Pero a veces esas cosas tan simples de imaginar y tan dif�ciles de encontrar en la vida real son las que nos llevan a so�ar en que los amores imposibles muchas veces llegan a ser posibles.
Despu�s de m�s de cincuenta a�os despu�s de haberle jurado su incondicional amor, Florentino Ariza logra estar junto a Fermina Daza, a raiz de la muerte de su esposo, un doctor de una familia rica y de alto nivel social. Aunque Florentino no le guard� fidelidad absoluta durante esa espera -era de esperar, ya que de otro modo hubiese sido demasiado inveros�mil que permaneciera tantos a�os solo- este personaje siempre se las ingeniaba para estar cerca de su amor.
Una grandiosa combinaci�n de humor sarc�stico -realmente fascinante y magistralmente conjurado por Garc�a M�rquez-, momentos y frases -llam�mosles cursis por no decir rom�nticos- y una historia que m�gicamente me lleg� a transportar al lugar de los hechos, imaginando cada detalle del entorno de la pareja, desde la comodidad de la casa de Fermina, hasta esa embarcaci�n en la que la pareja de ya ancianos, terminan la historia.
Lo que recuerdo m�s claramente de este libro es la frase "lo �nico que no me doler�a de morir, ser�a morir de amor" propia de Florentino, con la cual se puede describir por completo el contexto de la historia.
Uno de los libros que llevar�a conmigo a todas partes, y por supuesto, muy recomendable para aquellas personas que se inician en la lectura.

Encontrar este libro en mi pais me llevo un a�o ya que estaba agotado cuando al fin lo logre obtener me di cuenta porque en una entrevista que le hicieron recientemente para un documental de television a Garcia Marquez afirmo que era el mejor libro que habia escrito,no cien a�os de soledad como la gente piensa sino este libro,la verdad que he leido la mayoria de ellos y estoy de acuerdo que este es el mejor que ha escrito hasta el dia de hoy.EXCELENTE

Sweet and endearing, January 28, 2004
Since my infant twins are Cuban-American, I have been looking for children's books that will teach them Spanish while also teaching them a bit of their heritage. This collection of Latin American nursery rhymes brings together a collection of sweet rhymes that also appear in English. I'm always interested to see how the translator of this work chose to translate the rhymes. Often, the translations are not word for word, so sometimes I feel like I am reading a new rhyme. The adaptations are as interesting as the original ones. The illustrations are as pretty as the rhymes. I will save this book for my twins to give to their children one day.

A Rare Find, April 13, 2005
It is so difficult to find good children's books in Spanish in the U.S. Most of them are simply Spanish translations of English language books. Pio Peep! is an excellent bi-lingual book containing traditional Spanish nursery rhymes and songs and English adaptations (I say adaptations because great care has been taken to preserve the rhythm and rhyme of the original). The illustrations are very well done too. I highly recommend this book to anyone raising children in a bi-lingual household.

I use this book with my Mexican boyfriend to better his SPOKEN English, and this book hits the nail right on the head. Although it's written by a "gringo", it is relatively free from grammar and translation mistakes. The style is good for the novice English learner and truly starts from one knowing NOTHING. The flow and progression of the book is more natural than some I have seen. We have finished the book twice and continue to use it for review and drills of vocabulary.

Y yo he encontrado esta libro ser magnifico y muy facil para aprender inglis. Los lantinos en nuestra fabrica les gusta esta libro muchismo. De todos los libros yo he encontrado y he revisado, esta libro es el mas mejor de todos. Si ya no hablas inglis, y est�s serio en aprendiendo la idioma de inglis, yo recomendo esta libro 100%

PD: ahhh otra cosa mas tambien, hay una segunda nivel a esta libro tambien. Que sigue con las ideas de esta libro, para aprender las formas de "estar". Por ejemplo para hablar de futuro, o el pasado.

I'm a white guy who speaks, writes y reads spanish with 95% fluency, and at times I have to teach the latino workers that we have in our factory a few words of english in order to communicate with the non-spanish speaking workers. And I have found this book to be magnificent y very easy for them to learn english. All the latino workers we have in our workplace love this book. Out of all the books I have found and reviewed, this book is to be the best one out of them all. If you already don't speak english, and are serious en learning english, I recommend this book 100%

PS: Ahhh one other thing. There is a second level to this book series. That continues on where this book leaves off, following the same ideas as this book, but for learning the different parts of "being". For example talking about the future, or or the past.

In closing:
I seriously recommend to anyone, just starting out to learn english, to purchase this book. Also to those who already speak english and want to brush up on their spanish, this book is a good learning tool as well.

Much better than a generic ESL book., September 27, 2007
I teach English to adult Latinos, and the generic ESL text (i.e., a book not designed for speakers of a specific foreign language) we were using earlier was just awful. My students really love using this book, and I can absolutely notice a marked improvement in their English. One caveat is that if you are an ESL tutor or teacher, you need to have a good knowledge of Spanish in order to make proper use of this text.

Gary Chapman en su libro Los cinco lenguajes del amor, observa que hay cinco maneras generales de expresar amor.

a) Palabras de afirmaci�n (como el reconocer logros, elogiar y dar �nimo).
b) Tiempo de calidad (como el escuchar con atenci�n, realizar paseos y viajes juntos).
c) Recibir regalos (como las flores, las joyas y los libros).
d) Actos de servicio (como lavar el autom�vil, cortar el c�sped, hacer la comida, cuidarle en la enfermedad).
e) Toque f�sico (como tomar la mano, dar abrazos, besos).

Es de suma importancia que cada c�nyuge descubra cu�l de estos "lenguajes" aprecia m�s su c�nyuge. Es grato y aun necesario "hablar" todos estos lenguajes emocionales para expresar amor a su c�nyuge, pero conviene un �nfasis especial en aquel que el o ella siente hondamente. Es posible que uno est� amando con un lenguaje que el otro apenas siente o entiende como amor. Si a cierta esposa lo que m�s le hace sentirse amada son las palabras de afirmaci�n, no le ser� tan importante que todos los d�as su esposo le regale algo material, sin elogiarle o animarla verbalmente.

Gary Chapman expone en su libro un an�lisis interesant�simo y bien escrito de los lenguajes afectivos del humano. La lectura no le ser� solamente beneficiosa para la relaci�n que mantiene con su c�nyuge sino tambi�n afectar� positivamente sus lazos interfamiliares o con los amigos. Chapman da muchos ejemplos pr�cticos y de la vida real, de modo que cada lector podr� identificarse con alguno de los tipos de comunicaci�n afectiva descritos. "Los cinco lenguajes del amor" es una obra muy pr�ctica y aplicable a la vida cotidiana. Yo lo considero una contribuci�n bastante �til y absolutamente recomendable para enriquecer su comunicaci�n afectiva y comprender mejor sus propias necesidades.

Cada libro presenta un panorama expresivo del mundo interior de su autor, que, no siempre, apela o informa de la mejor manera a todo lector. De este modo hay libros que, lisa y llanamente, aunque pueden "conectar" con algunas personas, no llegan a otras. Pues bien, este no es para mi. He leido decenas de libros en esta tematica. Le aseguro que asi como otros libros estan sobrecargados hacia los aspectos psicologicos, o culturales, o sociologicos... este esta notablemente marcado por tendencias de "la nueva era." Esta perspectiva no "va" con mi paladar literario y espiritualidad.

Asi que si usted se parece a mi en este particular y prefiere una lectura que mejor abrace los principios cristianos y que al hacerlo tambien integre excelentes consejos para mejorar sus relaciones, comprendiendose mejor como ser humano, le recomiendo: Como Relacionarse Mejor: Manual de Tecnicas Para Desarrollar Relaciones Mas Satisfactorias, Dinamicas y Duraderas (Serie Recursos Ministeriales)

De todas maneras le estoy dando tres estrellas, ya que si bien es algo reiterativo(y obviando lo que mencione, que es personal)"La maestria del amor" contiene algunas historias interesantes que ilustran los puntos del autor.

Reading this book wasn't just fun, but it really helped me in my French. I learned more in reading it than I have in all of my classes combined. There are some little changes in it, but that is because of the language difference and my over-reading the English version led me to know its wording too well. Still, that only made it more fun. I'd recommend this to any French student.

I have to admit that I enjoyed book four less than the other three--when I read it in English. For some reason the story seemed fragmentary, overly complex, and poorly focused. I felt the movie brought a greater sense of direction and theme to the story. After having read the book again in French, however, I'm inclined to feel I misjudged it. I suppose, having to focus my own attention more closely to read the material in a foreign language, I saw the mental lines along which the story was constructed more clearly. The author is truely brilliant.

As before, this book in French, too, is a wonderful way to learn the language. Book four is definitely more complex in vocabularly and gramatical structure than the earlier books, just as it is in English, but also as in English, it coaxes the reader along, encouraging him or her to stretch a little bit to understand that word or that sentence, to be just a bit more patient and put it all together. Reading Harry in French gave me once again that same sense of joy I had when learning to read in the first place.

I bought the French translation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for my son who began his first year of French this year in Middle School. It has been great fun and encouragement for him. His teacher found it fun as well, reading short excerpts from it to the French class. Everyone loves Harry!

I never really liked to read. It was just too boring. Reading all those pages that had no effect on me. Then I heard about Harry Potter. Everyone really liked it. I wanted to see what the big deal was. I read the first book. I thought to myself how imaginative it was. The creatures, the characters, and the plot. They were all like a puzzle fit perfectly together. It made my mind run wild. I had to read the second book. I went through that like a person going after 1 billion dollars. It was so amazing. The third book was next. That was better than the first and second books. Finally the forth. Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. That was the best of all. My favorite character is Ron. He reminds me of me. All except the looks. I look a lot better than him. This book is filled with creativity, mystery, fantasy, and love. All in one. Thats why I got hooked on all these things.

Then, Harry and the Weasley's go to the train station. Then they say goodbye to everyonne and get on the bus. They meet their new teacher and their best (not) friend, Malfred. Their is a special game instead of quidditch this year and only people over 18 years of age can enter to win. Three schools are coming to play but only 3 people, one from each school, can play. Harry plays. But he's not 18 so a lot of people get mad. I won't tell you what else happens, so get the book and read it!

I have to admit that the book took me awhile to love, but then I became totally involved. About the last 100 pages held my attention more than anything. This is a remarkable journey, and one that will haunt me for years to come. Some of the historical references were interesting, but often times took away from the poignancy of the novel.

I have read several books from Isabel Allende I can not say that there is one better than the other!!!, but personally, I think this is a very special book because you can see how is the personality of this writer and all the good feelings she has for her family, life, moments... On each word in this book you can find many aspects of your own life: funny situations, sat situations, love, hopes ... It could reflects anybody's life. The book is also have parts of others books she had wrote, and is also a biography of her life. If you really like the author, you will enjoy this book very much!!! I do not know if my english is good, but I hope everybody can understand want I wrote. I am venezuelan, so my language is spanish. But I could give an opinion in Spanish also.

Reading "PAULA" was a magnificent experience. I have read all of Allende's books, but none quiet as touching. It took me from tears to laughter with the turn of a page. Allende is definately one of the greatest along with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Laura Esquibel and Angeles Mastreta.

It is an excellent book which has touched my heart. I am the same age as Paula was when she fell into her coma, and I have just married like Paula had. I have made lots of plans for the future, however this book makes you realize that you should live everyday as if it were your last, make the most of life and of those around you now. The book describes so well how interesting and full of events Isabel's own life has been, full of joy and sadness. Isabel is so courageous and strong, you can only admire her. I can't wait to read her other books!

This is her best book ever. Spanish is my mother tongue, so i read the original version. Isabel Allende has this uncanny ability to make some words jump out of the page and grab you, words that you thought you had forgotten, that bring you back to childhood, or remind you of an old neighbor. I read some of the reader comments before posting this, and someone said this book makes you laugh, then five minutes later makes you cry. I couldn't agree more. I enjoyed it also because i saw how much autobiographical insight is in _The House of the Spirits_. One more thing to mention: the description she makes of her uncle Salvador Allende must be one of the best portraits in writing i have ever seen.

Soy una fiel seguidora del Dr. Brian Weiss, he leido todos sus libros y cada uno ha sido una experiencia maravillosa. Muchas Vidas Muchos Sabios (o Maestros) nos abre las puertas a un mundo totalmente espiritual, nos hace perderle el miedo a la muerte pues es solo un periodo de transicion. Mi padre es medico, Cardiologo, y aun siendo un cientifico, por su profesion el ha tenido experiencias con pacientes que han sufrido paros cardiacos y han regresado relatando experiencias muy similares a las que se narran en este libro. Muchas Vidas Muchos Sabios llego a mis manos en el momento de una perdida muy dolorosa, mi hermana menor acababa de fallecer en un accidente de autos. Ese libro fue un consuelo increible en ese momento, llego a mi vida en el momento en el que mas lo necesitaba. Cada vez que algun amigo o conocido esta pasando por una experiencia similar, sin pensarlo compro una copia de este libro y se la obsequio. Por su lado, Lazos de Amor es el segundo libro mas hermoso que he leido. Nos enseña que el amor es infinito y que nunca muere. Es lo unico que realmente vale, lo unico real. Recomiendo ambos libros al maximo, cambiaran la vida de los que lo lean!!!! GRACIAS DR. WEISS!!!

The book is about a patient of Dr. Weiss who goes to his office in order to eliminate some of her fears. Weiss not only helps her with the fears, but also discover that he has met her in other lifes. The most interesting part is that Weiss helps the patient, but the patient makes him see the life from other aspects and to value life even more.When you finish reading the book, you start to value life a whole more and start understanding a little bit more the things that occur around you ... This book along with "Tomo I" are without a doubt the AP Spanish Lit Exam. I had both books during the last school year and 4 of the featured stories in the books appeared on the MC section and another 4 appeared on the free response section. Bottom line if you are looking to take AP Spanish Lit exam this is the book for you. In addition it is a great read for anyone who is wants to start reading Spanish literature. The books feature a variation of authors from all of Mexico, South and Central America, and Spain. Stories come with a brief biography of the author and provide some background of the writers. In addition colloquial phrases and complex words are defined in the same page they are printed and are marked with numbers making them easy to find in the story and list. In short I really liked this book and recommend it to anyone taking the AP Lit exam or interested in Spanish literature.

Finalmente alguien que explica, clara y llanamente las diferencias entre los dos sexos y como sobrellevarlas. John Gray describe, con un muy buen sentido del humor pero realista, la relacion entre hombres y mujeres, a tal punto que da un diccionario para que las dos partes se entiendan mejor. Es la cuchara de azucar que toda pareja necesita para encontrar soluciones para las diferencias. Deberiamos tener 2 en cada casa, uno en cada mesita de luz a cada lado de la cama.

Al menos en la cultura norteamericana, el libro fue un éxito, cuando fuera lanzado hace algunos años atras. Punto por el cual, en algunos detalles es posible que no sea apropiado para todo lector hispano. Especialmente aquellos que no viven en los EEUU. ¿por qué me preguntará? Pues el libro está dirigido a una cultura concreta, no es de margen global, ni multicultural... Cosas que pueden ser cierta en la maneras de relacionarse, en los sistemas matrimoniales y familiares de una cultura, es posible que sean todo lo contrario en otra...

Lo anterior fue a modo de advertencia. No obstante, el libro es un excelente recurso -si se tiene en cuenta sus delineamientos generales sin ser estricto- para mejorar la relacion matrimonial. El autor es un sicologo, escritor, y hombre que ha pasado por el divorcio y la lucha de construir una mejor relación de pareja subsecuente. Sabe de lo que está hablando.

Su tesis fundamental -discutida por otros especialistas, con buenas bases-es que esencialmente los problemas susitados entre el hombre y la mujer, es que son muy diferentes, y mientras no caigan en cuenta de sus diferencias, y sigan tratando al otro sexo como si pensara, entendiera y sintiera como los de su propio sexo, tendrán problemas. Asi que la propuesta del autor es que, los dos generos -masculino y femenino-pertenecientes a planetas diferentes -mates y venus- deben comunicarse en base como el otro entiende las cosas, siendo sensible a sus diferencias y gozando los puntos comunes.

Contiene secciones practicas y ejemplos bastante claros de las ideas que prensenta.

Para personas cristianas (o no necesariamente cristianas) recomiendo los siguientes dos libros. Como Relacionarse Mejor: Manual de Tecnicas Para Desarrollar Relaciones Mas Satisfactorias, Dinamicas y Duraderas (Serie Recursos Ministeriales) excelente trabajo -escrito por un autor de cultura hispana- para comprender mejor el fenomeno de la comunicacion y como mejorar las relaciones. Tambien otro trabajo, ya clasico: Los Cinco Lenguajes Del Amor: Como expresar devocion sincera a su conyuge (Five Love Languages, Spanish edition)

Me gusto mucho este libro porque habla sobre la diferencia de las parejas y de como se empiezan los problemas entre ambos. Este libro se tiene que analizar entre las parejas para que tengan menos problemas. Este libro explica que las mujeres son muy diferentes a los hombre en su caracter y cuerpo tambien. Tambien explica mucho de que las mujeres son muy exesivas en comprar muchas cosas que no se ocupan mas en su hogar que en su pareja. Espero y lean este libro porque parece muy importante para poder manejar los problemas.

Debo decir que, con muchísimo esfuerzo, logré terminarlo.
En cuanto al contenido, aunque la idea general es acertada y el libro explica estas diferencias entre hombres y mujeres, las plantea como algo que no tiene solución. La premisa de aceptar al otro con sus rasgos de personalidad inherente es acertada, pero la presenta de modo tal que no queda alternativa más que la resignación, sin posibilidades de que hombres y mujeres puedan cambiar ciertas cosas. Esto sugiere un determinismo que no creo aplicable a los seres humanos.

Más que esto, me molestó la forma en que refuerza los estereotipos imperantes: muy de lejos oí la voz y opiniones de mi madre, nacida en los años 40... ha pasado ya bastante tiempo. Cierto es que el señor Gray aclara de un principio que su planteamiento es una visión general, pero me pareció que se puso el parche antes de la herida: si vas a defender una postura, hazlo en su totalidad.

La responsabilidad de la mujer está sobredimensionada: dedica un capítulo entero a cómo las mujeres deben aceptar y tolerar que los hombres se alejen, y otro dedicado a cómo las mujeres son cambiantes e inestables, pobrecitas, y cómo los hombres deben estar siempre ahí porque estamos siempre necesitadas de afecto y dependemos de la aceptación masculina. Repito: los 50 ya pasaron.

La analogía de los marcianos y las venusinas se torna aburrida y repetitiva. Sería más grato si simplemente planteara: "los hombres hacen esto; las mujeres, esto otro".

También sus planteamientos son repetitivos: lo que dijo en 300+ páginas pudo haberlo dicho fácilmente en 150. Tal vez fue intencional, para que el lector aprendiera los planteamientos a fuerza de repetición, pero aburre.

Con respecto a la forma, la redacción de este libro es penosa. Varias veces me vi forzada a releer 3-4 veces una misma frase para comprender lo que intentaba decir. Asimismo, la traducción es malísima. Sin necesidad de leer el original, fácilmente se identifican frases calcadas del inglés, que en castellano no tienen ningún sentido.

En resumen: leerlo fue un esfurzo, no sólo por su contenido -estereotipado y a veces ofensivo-, sino también por el modo en que está escrito.

Although I've read this book before, this time, as an older and wiser reader I was able to recall a lot more information and specifics that had slipped my mind since the previous reading. As a non-native spanish speaker, it was easy to follow, in a dialect I could easily translate if necessary. Plus, this book is useful in the spanish classes that I teach in portraying a realistic view of guatemalan history.

After reading this book, I realized how truly blessed I am. My problems are so minor compared to theirs. It also helps you to understand the suffering of the Indigenous persons both in Guatemala and in other countries throughout Latin America. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about the world around them.

Y no solo en sus casas, llevenlo al trabajo en la cajuela del coche. Un buen consejero es muy dificil de encontrar en estos dias - sin magnificar-. Es de esos libros que nos invitan a subrayar, y que despues de un tiempo terminan todo subrayado. Algo importante antes de terminar, "sentido comun solo eso, nada mas ni nada menos Sentido Comun".Dificil Nooo!!! leanlo! y despues me cuentan.

esto es lo ultimo, se supone que debes ser tocado por estas historias, casi vomito al leer cosas tan cursis e insipidas y me pongo a pensar en todo el dinero que se estan ganando los que se dedican a recopilar esta clase de cuentecitos para gente debil y sonsa, y pienso como traman uno, dos, tres y creo que ya van por la parte seis y sigo pensando en la estupidez de la gente o es tal vez falta de comunicacion o que se yo. lei la primera copia y lo regale inmediatamente antes de que me vieran con el. es uno de esos libros que me avergonzaria de tener, como las novelitas rosas o las historias de corin tellado. pero que le vamos a hacer mientras haya mundo existira mercado para esta basura ideologica...

This book gives the reader an insight into what it's like to be a woman from the heart, the mind and the belly. Just as it makes you laugh on one page and cry on another, it will also make you so angry you'll stay up at night... angry at her, angry at her husband and angry at yourself because you find something likeable in the horrible husband of this likeable woman. Very good book. Although some other people that have reviewed this book might not have noticed it, this is actually the story of part of the life of Maximino Avila Camacho, governor of the state of Puebla during the forties and called Andrés Ascencio in the story. Other important people mantioned are: Mexican tycoon Emilio Azcárraga Milmo (Milito), owner of Televisa (Mexico's biggest TV company), and Manuel Avila Camacho, Maximino's brother who was president of Mexico during the mid/late 40's. I know all this because I come from Puebla, just like the author of the book. I even know some of her relatives!

First of all sorry for my poor English. I am German but grew up in Costa Rica and now in Panama.

Angeles Mastretta has that writing style that wont let you stop reading until you reach the end. Historically speaking you learn what in a certain sense you already know. Militarism in Latin America. Its hidden horrors still continue today in many of our LA countries. The time of Zapata was no different though always interesting to refresh.

Besides, Angeles Mastretta has the abilily of describing everyday life as I had never read before. She will also keep you alert, awake, and interested through the whole book, every single page. I have read her 3 books. Mujeres de Ojos Grandes, Mal de Amores y Arráncame la Vida. All of them deserve 5 stars. I hope she will continue writing, or if she has written something else, I hope Amazon will sell it.

Es una obra de literatura impactante y encantadora que no le permitirá dejar de leerla hasta el final. Y no sólo eso, sino que le narrará una historia cautivadora ocurrida en México durante y después de la Revolución Mexicana.

Catalina, la protagonista de la novela, se casa muy joven con un político, mayor que ella, y muy prominente de la ciudad Mexicana de Puebla. A medida que la carrera de él, Andrés Atencio, va aumentando, Catalina se ve envuelta en más y más responsabilidades, lo cual hace maravillosamente. Estas responsabilidades incluyen criar a varios de los otros hijos de Atencio.

Luego a medida que la novela va avanzando ella se entera de críticas fuertes a su marido, de las luchas por poder, de los acusaciones de asesinato por parte de su marido y Catalina , quizás como vía de escape, hasta busca amor en dos distintos amantes. Al final, como en todas las tragedias de la novela hay un impactante suceso que quizá libera a Catalina de todo el peso que ha tenido que aguantar.

Esta novela ha sido traducida hasta el presente en 11 idiomas y al principio narra el amor inicial y hasta sumiso de Catalina por el General Andrés Atencio y la progresiva desvinculación de ella a un tiempo de su papel de subordinación conyugal y de su aceptación del contexto político que pondrá en duda sus ideales revolucionarios.
Es una novela bellamente escrita que no debe dejar de leer.

Being a native Mexican I should be rather used to hearing stories about revolutionary and post - revolutionary Mexico. But never is it so fascinating and perfectly descriptive as with Angeles Mastretta. This story is probably one of her best! Not only does she relate the story of a woman - which at the same time can be and probably is the story of many women at the time- in the chaotic, war-like and post war Mexico, but the protagonist in the story starts evolving all throghout the plot - a parallelism with the country. Her description is not only vivid but exciting, which will make you unable to put the book down! And it is on this book where she displays what a magnificent writer she is: vivid and exciting, turning reality into something almost fantastic, and transforming tragedy into something to laugh about. Truly, one of her best books.

Very good story, still as valid as then..., January 31, 2005
I had never read a book by Mastretta until I picked up a copy of "Arrancame la vida". In this book, the author describes the life of a woman, Catalina, during and after the Mexican Revolution. She marries a strong, power-thirst man who becomes a big politician.

I found this story different because of the sincerity with which the main character expresses herself. However, what made the story interesting, at least for me, was to realise how little things have changed in the power circles. Replace Catalina's name and add a current, prominent last name of a Mexican socialité, and you can probably still validate all the assumptions on which this book is based.

Mastretta has that "spark" that allows you to get a realistic picture of the book's characters. It is also quite witty if you know anything about the Mexican culture! The only drawback I found in the book was her use of the punctuation signs, but you can get over it because the story is gripping.

Highly recommended if you want something lite, relaxing and that makes you laugh and become even more cynical about politicans and society.

A beautifully written novel with a very engaging plot. I loved it. Though reading it for a Latin American lit class, I always found that I was so drawn into the story that I read past the assigned chapters. I highly recommend Arrancame La Vida.
