    Editorial Review

The fifth title in Process’ Self-Reliance series demystifies medical practices with a practical approach to twenty-first-century health and home medicine, particularly helpful in a financial downturn.

When There Is No Doctor is smartly designed and full of medical tips and emergency suggestions. At a time when our health system has become particularly susceptible to strain, it should be no further than an arm’s reach away in your household.

This is a book about sustainable health, primarily having to do with your health and what you can do to protect it—in bad times certainly, but also in good. I will help you ensure the health of those you love, yourself and, should you so choose, your community, if and when the world changes. World may come to mean your little town or the whole globe. It could change for a few days or weeks, or for a few years. It could change because of a flood, financial crisis, flu pandemic, or failure of our energy procurement, production or distribution systems.

I will not teach you to be a lone survivalist who anticipates doing an appendectomy on himself or a loved one on the kitchen table with a steak knife and a few spoons, although I will discuss techniques of austere and improvised medicine for really hard times.

Gerard S. Doyle, MD, teaches and practices emergency medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he also plans the hospital’s response to disasters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Emergency Manual..., May 30, 2010
I very recently picked up this book for it looked really interesting. Unlike most other books that I have reviewed of a certain genre, I should in all fairness first say that I do not own any other book of this variety, so consequently I have no experience with any other books of its type to compare it to. All I can do it offer a clear an objective opinion on the book as it stands alone.

Personally I have found this book to be extremely informative and interesting. It should be understood that this is not a book that speaks all that much about cuts and bruises, but real life emergency situations where lives could very easily be at stake. Its title is very much right on in that it prepares and instructs one as clear and easily as possible as to what to do, and how to handle a series of very traumatic medical emergencies. In other words, it is designed more for when their really isn't a doctor to either be found, or when there will be a long time between the emergency situation, and actually getting hold of a medical professional. It is very helpful in informing one as to what should be in your home or whatever place you will be keeping this book as to what supplies, equipment, and medicines should be kept on hand just in case. And it does clearly and as plainly as possible explain the procedure for dozens of truly emergency situations and trauma. On the other hand, it is not a book that will either describe or recommend that you attempt to pull out your own tonsils to save some time and cash. As the author, Dr, Gerard Doyle himself states on the book jacket:

"I will not teach you to be a lone survivalist who anticipates doing an appendectomy on himself or a loved one on the kitchen table with a steak knife and a few spoons, although I will discuss techniques of austere and improvised medicine for really hard times."

My experience with this book so far has been fortunately not to have any real need of it. But I am attempting to educate myself as to the advice, preparedness, and actual procedure should such an emergency situation arise when there really is no doctor around, and its only you, or some other non professional to be depended on. It is very interesting to read, very informative in a plain easy to understand language, and could very well save your own, or someone else's life someday. I have taken one star off the total rating for unfortunately Dr. Doyle cannot help himself but regurgitate a lot of both very well known and common sense advice about eating right and exercising. And the book does contain a healthy dose of filler here and there as to the background and anatomy of an appendix for example, along with the actual description of an emergency involving one should one arise. But certainly not does his lecturing or anatomical filler come at the expense of great deal of truly helpful and potentially life saving instruction and procedure. Personally I like the book very much and consider it well worth the price, and something that every home should have around. Recommended...

3-0 out of 5 stars Little Bit Of A Let Down, June 27, 2010
I have read a couple titles from the Process Self-reliance Series, and they were impressive. However, after reading this one cover-to-cover ... it was a disappointment. I wouldn't go as far to say it wasn't helpful ... just not as much as a I expected. After I read this book, I purchased "Medicine for the Outdoors: The Essential Guide to Emergency Medical Procedures and First Aid" by Paul Auerbach ... and that book was REALLY GOOD. It contained a lot more of what I was expecting from this book (i.e. practical instructions for advanced medical aid). What was helpful from this book was comprehensive info on preventive measures for disaster scenarios, and a pretty comprehensive list for medical supplies to have in a well-stocked first aid kit (based on the author's years of experience in the ER).

    4-0 out of 5 stars A very good overview, May 26, 2010
When there is no doctor is a very good overview of austere and disaster medicine preparation, it is not however a how to manual. Nor is it one you would read after grid crash. It is a book that the intent is to point you in the right directions do learn and read more and to get supplies together. Of unusual content is the fact that the book touches on veterinary medicine post grid crash. I would highly recommend that everyone read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't confuse with "Where There Is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook", October 13, 2010
This is a good book, but it may not be the one you're looking for. This title is confusingly similar to that of a different and truly great book: Where There Is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook

The latter is primarily a treatment of public health management in the Third World, whereas Dr. Doyle's book is more about self-reliant medical care. There's significant overlap, but one book is not a substitute for the other, and I wish Dr. Doyle had chosen a more clearly unique title.

If you're interested in this book, you may also wish to get Ditch Medicine: Advanced Field Procedures For Emergencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unless you are a physician, there already is no doctor..., August 19, 2010
This well-written, detailed, approachable book is both informative and thought-provoking. Doyle gives the reader accurate and applicable medical knowledge and describes useful procedures; at the same time, he emphasizes the importance of how to approach medical problems in a general sense. His chapters on preventative medicine, training, and planning are comprehensive and force the reader to see the importance of non-pharmacological and non-surgical means of maintaining health. Later chapters detailing home remedies and cheap/effective medications are extremely practical. The wound care chapter was a joy to read. Lists and references throughout the book give the reader the opportunity to continue their research once they finish this fantastic book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, October 28, 2010
I was greatly disappointed with this book. I expected this book to be informative, go into detail about alternative medicine, illnesses and maybe explain how certain medical procedures can be done without access to a hospital.

What I found in this book was mostly a pep talk about why its important to know how to treat illness without access to a doctor, a very brief snippet of alternative medicine such as herbs that left me no more ready to put them to use that before reading the book, and constant referrals to other books or places in which I could obtain the information that I thought this book should have covered.

A large part of this book could be eliminated by crossing out the constant pep talks. I bought the book because I'm already on board with learning more for hard times so the author just wastes space that should be used to cover important information and also wastes the readers time.

I was offended to see the author rely so heavily on referencing you to other books where you can learn something he barely scratches the surface on. I already own or have seen many of those books and websites so this book offered me nothing new and simply teases the reader who buys the book expecting it to cover those topics.

The only reason I didn't give this book one star is because the basic information and pep talks may be good for beginners to this mindset.

Don't confuse this book with "Where there is no Doctor". There is no comparison.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Look at Wellness and Self Reliance, July 5, 2010
This book was recommended to me by a family member who knows that I am a middle aged mother and grandmother, FAR removed from wilderness adventures or fears of grid-crash. But I am really glad that I read this fascinating look at wellness and self care.

Each and everyone of us has a responsibility to make good choices for wellness and quality of health for ourselves and our loved ones. This book looks at practical self care and first aid, especially in the moments when health care is not at hand. It makes you realize how much you already know about taking care, and opens up ideas for things you have at hand to use in an emergency. Although I am not as concerned about a post apocalyptic world, I did find the check lists for what a community needs medically or in the case of a catastrophe to be well thought out and universally applicable. And, as others have pointed out, I really did enjoy the section on caring for our pet animals!

The writing style is easy to read, and the author's light touch keeps the pages turning. I found that I wanted to read it from cover to cover rather than seeing it as a reference book only. It will stay in my family room for casual readers from now on. If you are intersted in keeping your family well and thinking positively about good health this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this. It wasn't what I was expecting, but...., October 17, 2010
I took me on a journey I didn't realize I needed to go on. Also, the compiled resources that are referenced inside for SHTF medical care and prevention is worth it alone. Western Medicine is all about consistency, control and liability. It's all about modern devices that rely on electricity and medication that are doled out under a very strict process. This is all great and fantastic and proper when you are living in a Western society and everything is hunky dory. What do you do when you are stranded in the wilderness after a crash landing? What do you do after a Hurricane? What do you do after an earthquake? What happens when you are on a ship or boat in the middle of the ocean? This book doesn't go into those scenarios with step by step medical procedures. It does give some very frank advice and suggestions of where to find that information, all the while running the very fine line of laws, regulations, etc. that should be followed during normal structured society, but goes completely out the window when it all comes crumbling down. We are all very unprepared and modern society has made us rely on others at every turn. What do you do when the food shelves are empty? What do you do when the light switch doesn't work? What do you do when the water doesn't come out of the tap or could be contaminated? What do you do when there is no doctor?

Medicine is a business. Medical school is a business. It shouldn't cost what it costs. We've succeeded in shoehorning the medical professionals down a path that puts our very lives in the hands of a few select individuals following a checklist of rules, regulations, insurance do's and dont's at the penalty of proper treatment. If we are now guaranteed entitled health care, why is the information and knowledge still unobtainable and doled out in the same way? Doctors are necessary and their capacity is what allows us to live longer, healthier and more productive lives, but what happens when there are too few too far away and a simple medical procedure can be performed by another individual until modern healthcare is again available? What if the hospitals are full? What if the road to get there isn't usable?

This is the journey that I made with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good beginers overview, June 23, 2010
This book introduces common subjects in the management of health care needs in austere settings. Its a great overview that is well priced and provides leads for further study. Kudos to Dr Doyle for this well written and researched basic text.
All the info in this book is available free and in more detail at [...] but as a blog site its less organized than the book. This book remarkably contains much of the same info found on this web site without referencing it at all. To include some original researched content. I guess that given a scenario 2 docs will draw the same conclusions. There is a free austere medicine book download associated with the above website that covers the topic as well.
I give the book high marks as it is a good intro book to give to someone interested in austere medicine to get them started for a good price.

3-0 out of 5 stars When There Is No Doctor, November 22, 2010
The book itself was good. I carried it whenever I went hiking or rowing, one time I fell into a ravine and cracked my head open and dislodged an ankle bone and stepped on a poisonous shrub, unfortunately I had forgotten my glasses so I couldn't figure out what to do since I could not read the book. If you don't have a photographic memory, you may want to get it typed into shorthand and laminated to carry around with you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, Advanced First Aid, June 27, 2010
I have recently read a few books on first responder type medical aid for wilderness scenarios ... and this is BY FAR the best. If you are looking for a book that goes well beyond even advanced first aid, and presents the material in a pratical way using common languge ... this book is it. There is a balance with books like this on either being too elementary (i.e. "dumbed-down") or being too academic (i.e. filled with technical jargon that goes over the head of most people), but this book is a great balance between the two. The author has a gift of explaining things in a very straight-forward fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guideout there. Period., February 14, 2010
As a Wilderness EMT and wilderness medicine instructor, I often find myself asking myself questions or being asked questions that I wouldhave otherwise never conjured up. Needless to say, I wouldn't carry this "bible of the backcountry" with me everywhere I go while out enjoying mother nature's splendor, but it certainly has its own spot in my emergency medicine library collection! Well written, easy to follow and understand, and the graphics are clear and concise. A great resource for any Wilderness First Aider, WFR or even WEMT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding advice for hikers and other outdoor adventurers, December 9, 2009
This new edition is a standard handbook for anyone participating in outdoor activities or eco-tourism. Dr. Auerbach is an emergency surgeon and authority in wilderness medicine. He maintains a superb website called "Outdoor Health" (link in the first Comment).

Dr. Auerbach offers advice on both minor and major injuries, from shark and snake bites to lightning strikes, wound care, blister management and procedures for a being stranded by a snowstorm in your car.

His prose is clear and careful, and he is a great believer in prevention as well as a great resource for emergency treatment of patients far from professional medical care. An example of his writing:

"One gives up very little (nothing, really) and gains everything by wearing a helmet in the appropriate circumstances. Freedom of choice is a selfish concept when one considers that the head-injured victim forces loved ones or society to provide care and the financial resources to manage the injury and rehabilitation, and sadly, support for the disabled person, who might have avoided most of the injury by wearing a helmet.

"There is no excuse for not wearing a helmet approved for high risk (for head injury) situations. It is no different than wearing a seat belt in a car or washing your hands before you eat. Prevention is the name of the game. Having cared for many people with devastating head injuries, most of which would have been trivial or absent if a helmet had been worn, I can only hope that we do what it takes to mandate helmet use in every reasonable situation for which they would be of benefit. That is a necessary and appropriate use of the law."

If you are only a weekend hiker like me, or take on more challenging pursuits, get to know Dr. Auerbach, either on his blog or better yet on this excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best buy for outdoor medicine, November 7, 2010
Dr. Auerbach has taken his bible of outdoor medicine, Wilderness Medicine, and has condensed it down into a terrific field guide in "Medicine for the Outdoors". Packed full of effective emergency treatment, this should be a standard on every outdoor bookshelf.

Organized into easily indexed chapters the book also has handy conversion tables, a "before you go" section, and chapters on water purification, casualty evacuation, medication and doses, and an extensive glossary.

When I received my copy I spent the next few days avidly reading it. Dr. Auerbach's writing style makes for a comfortable read, and I look forward to reading it again and again.

If you are anticipating being an expedition medic, or just want to have a safer camp...get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astounding Depth and Breadth of Information, November 3, 2010
This book covers almost every conceivable medical situation you will likely encounter in the field. The only downside is that the book is too big and heavy to carry with you during many of the outdoor activities where you might need it. It is ideal for a survivalist homesteader or other remote but relatively stationary situation, or even as part of a vehicle kit. It includes medications and dosages used to treat various maladies, and would prove an invaluable reference for anyone in an emergency situation away from traditional medical services. It is also a useful tool in creating an emergency medical kit targetted at specific activitied and situations, giving detailed information on the items needed for each type of emergency. Training is key, and no book will ever replace professional emergency medical personnel, but this book uses layman's language to describe medical emergencies and their treatments and can assist you when the professionals are not available.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one book you really need foran expedition, January 26, 2000
I lead canoe trips in northern Canada for the Science Museum of Minnesota. Many of our expeditions take us above the Arctic Circle. I'm no expert in Wilderness Medicine--and that's why I rely on this book. Doc Forgey knows wild places: he has a fly-in cabin deep in Northern Manitoba. Forgey understands that "evacuation", per se, is often not an option in a genuine wilderness setting. This book clearly and quickly pinpoints solutions to problems and tells you how to deal with them. Forgey provides a host of medical options: you can choose sophisticated Rx medicines, or stick with over-the-counter stuff. "Doc" lays out all options and provides alternatives. A superb index provides fast reference to problems--and, this handy little book fits right in your backpack. It's worth every penny--and each new revision is more thorough than the last. I also heartily recommend Buck Tilton's excellent book, Medicine For The Backcountry. Get them both and you'll be covered for everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contest with Nature, January 7, 2008
Living out in the wild, in the wilderness, is a contest with Nature. Most of the time, man wins the contest, but sometimes ... stuff happens.

Chapter One is about Assessment and starts with that key question: scene safe? Then Dr Forgey takes his reader through the ABCD's, vital signs, levels of consciousness, head to toe examination, shock, respiration rates, heart rates, and CPR. (The numbers for chest compressions and breaths has been changed by the AHA since Dr Forgey updated this book, but that is a minor issue.)

Chapter Two is about body system management. The focus of this chapter is on the systems in the head but the abdomen and reproductive system are given sections as well. There is also a very good, short section on poisoning from food poisoning to shellfish poisoning.

Chapter Three covers soft tissue wounds and treatments ... and suturing and stapling.

Chapter Four covers orthopedic injuries from head to foot.

Chapter Five covers bites and stings and anaphylactic shock. Interest-ingly Dr Forgey finds that rubber suction cups are as worthless as mouth suction. His lone endorsement is the Sawyer Extractor (which is available from Amazon.com).

Chapter Six is on infectious disease. Dr Forgey lists the most signif-icant *wilderness* diseases for North America and the world should one be contesting Nature abroad.

Chapter Seven's environmental injuries include hypothermia, heat stress, high altitude related illnesses, and ... being struck by lightning. Step current is caused when lightning hass struck and the current spreads out like a wave across the ground and the victim's feet are different distances from the strike point. Since the body has less resistance than the ground, a circuit is completed.

There are two useful appendices at the end of the book.

I am EMS certified and as a BLS instructor. I had a few quibbles with Dr Forgey such as his choice of prescription medications to list in one of the appendices. However I had no major disagreements and found the book to be more easily readable than any EMS book I have read. Lots of nuts and bolts and no fluff.

Also as I write this review, I am preparing a first aid segment for a TCLEOSE course on mantracking. Dr Forgey's book provided me with a lot of detail and anecdotes to include. However just as the title says this book is about wilderness medicine *beyond* first aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars buy this book, February 27, 2006
Buy it because you are planning that trip where you'll be three days from civilization.

And keep it around cause life tends to throw things you're way when your'e out and about.

This is my most tattered book. I use it for every medical thing I come across. It not only can set you up to stabilize pretty much any situation and give you the time you need to get help. It will also tell you what to do when you step on an sea urchin or accidentally burn yourself making coffee the same way you make coffee everyday.

    a fantastic reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book but needs updated references, December 28, 2006
I have several outdoor medical and first aide books and this one is the best. It really approaches topics that other books avoid like what to do if you cannot get to a doctor or hospital. The suggested kits in the back are also the best I have found. I only have two negative comments:

    1. The techniques and advice in the text could be cross referenced to the medical kits better.

    2. The references for more information are old or not very good. The website for the book seems to be underconstruction for at least a year and the major suppliers only offer about half of the items suggested. Most of the hard to find items can be purchased at Amazon or Moore Medical.

The other book to consider for dealing with a lack of traditional medical care is "Where there is no Doctor" but that is geared towards running a clinic in the third world rather than hiking.

I actually owned and read a much earlier version- listened to the advice- set up my 'Traveling Medical Kit'- and really appreciated the clear and concise medical information- and NOW- an updated version- many new ideas interspersed with time-tested procedures and meds- If you spend any time at all in the 'boondocks'-or just travelin'- You need a copy of this book- >and get copies for your kids too-when they get out on their own! This manual is good, practical and will prove itself in the reading of it- and putting into practice it's wisdom- That Dr Forgey- he's something else!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home for a wilderness trek without it!, February 3, 2000
William Forgey, MD's Wilderness Medicine appears in an updatedfifth edition to provide the latest details on assessing medicalproblems while in the wilderness. It goes far beyond most first aid manuals, covering soft tissue care and trauma, infections and diseases which may evidence themselves far from medical care, and treatments which can take place in the field. It is an execellent reference source that is easy to use, and Dr. Forgey provides this information in a manner that anyone can understand.

First off, this is a great book. If anyone thinks this is just a glorified first-aid book, think again. Dr. Forgey's is quick to point out that some medical emergencies are best treated at a hospital by professionals, having said that he plays a "what if" game where evac is not possible and then provides detailed treatment strategies based on your level of skills and supplies on hand. It's a clever approach where plan A is better than plan B which is better than plan C which is better than plan D. Although, he'll point out that plan D is better than doing nothing. His sense of humor is not lost in this book which makes for a compelling read. It's a must have for laymen or practicing pro new to wilderness medicine. I couldn't recommend this book enough. My only complaint, if it qualifies as a complaint is that there isn't a 6th Edition with the latest in medical technology represented. Having said that, if a technique worked in 1999 it should still work in 2009 or 2019!

Favorite excerp from the book: "Red-hot branding irons and pouring gun powder into a wound and lighting it, while effective in killing germs and among Rambo's favorite techniques, also destroy good tissue." (Chapter 3 p.93 paragraph 2)

This one is a keeper, and at the current price, you should buy one for anyone that travels a lot...anywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb source for beyond first aid, February 3, 2008
It's no surprise that every reviewer has given this excellent and comprehensive book five stars.

Written by William Forgey, MD, former president of the Wilderness Medicine Society it goes beyond first aid, dealing with situations where you cannot merely administer initial care and then count on a rapid evacuation. Forgey writes with a light hand; he avoids jargon and has a dry sense of humor. For example (p. 157): "How do you calm a person who's just been bitten by a snake? Not surprisingly, just telling him to remain calm won't work."

There are seven chapters, beginning with assessment and stabilization, and going through body system disease symptoms, injuries, bites and stings, infectious diseases, and environmental injuries. There is an excellent appendix for putting together wilderness first aid/medical kits, both with prescription, and non-prescription meds, and with a bandaging module.

You don't have to be physician, nurse, or EMT to benefit from the book. All the information, is practical and hands-on; of value to the layperson who is interested in first aid and emergency medical situations. After an initial reading, Wilderness Medicine is a fine reference work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for, November 30, 2009
Dr Forgey provides assessment tips and treatment options for dozens of traumatic, infectious, and environmental ailments encountered outdoors. Recommendations for gear tend to focus on multi-purpose commodities. For example, Percogesic is listed as a possible treatment for muscle aches, a decongestant, or a sleeping aid. This outlook allows for an economical approach and also cuts down on pack weight. The author is quick to point to obvious and practical substitutions such as bandanas and duct tape for bandaging or sugar solutions as an antibiotic ointment. Also, the detailed medication recommendations are dividied into prescription and non-prescription categories, depending on the level of care being provided. Throughout the book the author tries to provide multiple treatment options dependent on the training and gear of the medic, referring frequently to the gear list in the back. Topics covered are numerous and detailed, with treatment ranging from the simple and mundane (vinegar on jellyfish tentacles) to the advanced (suturing techniques). Very happy to have it in my library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, March 8, 2010
I use this book to prepare for teaching CPR/first aid courses through for the Red Cross. I like how it is organized. It is straightforward, up to date and includes useful graphics and charts. It begins with the most life threatening conditions, (airway blockage, breathing emergencies etc.) and moves on to the less life threatening conditions. At the back of the book, one can find some specific chapters on topics such as asthma and allergic reactions.

There are also some useful sections in this book about prevention of emergencies. I think everybody should be aware of this material. I particularly found ideas for preventing poisoning in children to be useful.

The focus of the book is on keeping a person alive and minimizing shock until more advanced medical help is available. If you are looking for information on wilderness survival, in situations where medical help is not likely to be nearby, you should refer to this book, but you will need to do additional research.

Part I of this book includes planning for emergencies. Topics covered are safeguarding your home against accidents, what to tell medical personnel when an emergency situation occurrs and medical charts to fill out for family members.

Emergency procedures, i.e., CPR and the Heimlach Maneuver, are highlighted with red on the edge of the book for quick reference.

Other areas covered are recognizing medical problems, snake and insect bites and sports injuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well executed, February 18, 2010
This book really does a great job of organizing and conveying information to the lay-person. It has a couple short introductory chapters that are meant to be read before the need to treat anyone arises, to give you a quick overview of how to approach emergencies. Most of the rest of the book is about diagnosing and treating people, and is organized into groups the average person can understand. This part is designed to be referenced as you're helping someone. The categories names are printed down the left edge of each page, and the page edges are colored, so you can just flip with your thumb and find what you're looking for very quickly. The specific conditions are written down the right edge.

    The categories are
    - Respiratory problems
    - Wounds and Circulation
    - Bone, Joint, and Muscle Injuries
    - Nervous system problems
    - Effects of heat and cold
    - Foreign Objects, Poisoning, Bites and Stings
    - Medical Conditions (illnesses)

For each condition, there are bullet points for diagnosing it, what your goals are in providing first aid for it, and things to avoid doing. This gets you the important information quickly without getting bogged down. Then there are simple numbered steps for treating the person, along with lots of good illustrative pictures as needed. Each condition also has a short paragraph or two explaining the hows and whys. When providing first-aid for someone, you'd probably skip over this and on to treatment (easy to do since treatment steps are bolded), and then come back and read it once things are somewhat under control. It gives a little more detail about what causes the problem and what the main risks are.

Next is a chapter on techniques and equipment, which covers what you should have in your first aid kit and how to use it. This is another good chapter to read in advance, but it can also be referenced quickly if needed. Last is a chapter on Emergency First Aid, which serves as an even-quicker reference for the most common serious conditions. By placing it at the back, it will be the first section people come across when flipping through with their thumb.

It's too bad this book doesn't have the 'Look Inside' option, because it's hard to get across how extremely well organized it is. It covers lots of info but it's easy to follow, and you can get just the right level of information quickly so you can help someone in a hurry. Kudos to the publisher because writing an easy to follow, well organized manual on any topic is really hard.

5-0 out of 5 stars ACEP First Aid Manual - great graphics, April 26, 2010
bought this manual after reviewing several at the local library. By far this one has the most easy to read graphics/pictures. Also wanted something very comprehensive if there should be an earthquake and somebody suffers a severe injury AND we are on our own for several days.
Right now this manual is stored with my other earthquake supplies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great home reference, March 12, 2010
The kids can easily follow the step by step directions, photos, and standard scenarios. The book covers every malady except those that requires hospitalization or surgery. I keep a copy in my library and one in my emergency earthquake bag.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive First Aid Manual with Separate Section for Emergency First Aid, February 28, 2010
Apparently, the ACEP made improvements over the Second Edition by including a separate section entitled "Emergency First Aid" in this new Third Edition. This section is located in chapter 13, which is at the end of the manual. It was created to be referred to quickly during an actual life-threatening emergency. It is clear and concise, with excellent photos. As a result, this ACEP Third Edition is a useful reference to use in "dire emergencies," as well as other less serious emergencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Needs Update, August 2, 2005
The book has much of what you expect in a first aid book. The one problem is that the book hasn't been updated in a long time. One of the treatments recommended was outdated and wrong.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date, January 30, 2009
While the first aid portion of the book is very good, all of the CPR information is out of date and does not reflect the standards adopted in 2005. This includes the standards for adult, child, and infant CPR; child and infant rescue breathing, and unconscious choking for adult and child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every home, May 22, 1999
This is one of the books Michael Hyatt recommends be in your Y2K library. It is the standard reference for dealing with injury and illness until the patient can get to a doctor.

The odds are that every day, people will be injured and you will want to be able to keep them alive and from additional injury. The Red Cross has been a major player in this area throughout the 20th century, and this book is a valuable tool for every household today AND in 2000. The more likely Y2K scenarios will still have medical help available, perhaps just harder to access. Even in the unlikely case where medical care is unavailable, the steps in this book will still be the appropriate first steps for treatment. You may want to find a book on 'wilderness medicine' to cover followup treatment if no doctor is available.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC - THE BOOK YOU'LL KEEP, December 7, 1999
It's been almost 18 years since I was given an earlier edition of this book. For those of us who have little patience or time for chatty anecdotes, the authors provide a decision tree for every sickness and problem you will probably encounter as a parent. The most remarkable aspect of this book is that it becomes a teaching instrument for your child - my daughter and I read the decision trees together, learning how to make decisions about a medical problem she was having. A copy of this edition is sitting on her bookshelf at college! She packed it, saying that she'll never outgrow it. Buy this for yourself or for new parents. They will thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Giving this book is the one gift that will get used often!, November 28, 1999
I received the 1988 version of this book back when my first child was born. I have used this book more often than anything. It has been by my bedside for 8 years! Now that my brother and sister-in-law are going to have their first child, it is at the top of my list of gifts to give them. There is a wealth of information for the new parent. It describes in detail, what the symptoms of common medical problems are. Even if you don't know what is wrong with your child, it prompts questions of you that help you figure it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Care of Your Child:A parent's Illustrated Guide to Complete Medical Care, August 8, 2007
I bought this book 27 years ago when I had my first child. I loved it then and love it now. I give it to every expectant mother I know. Our doctor was surprised that a new mom would know exactly what to ask and what information to have on hand. It has an easy to follow format with questions and guidelines for the taking care of your child. The book helps the parent know when to call the doctor or when to head to the emergency room. The book of course has been updated but the information from my original book is just as valuable. I still use it today to answer those important questions...virus or bacterial infection?

5-0 out of 5 stars Pregnancy and Child Medical Care Book, January 9, 2007
I got this from my sister a long time ago and I have been giving this book out for years to new mothers! It is one of the best "simple", straight-forward book I have seen. It tells of the warning signs, home remedies, and when to take the child or yourself to the doctor. It is a good reference book, something easy when young parents need that the most.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, April 9, 2006
This book is fantastic! I wish I had it when my children were little. I purchased it for my daughter who is expecting her first baby (our first grandchild).

This book is what everyone needs to have in the house when you are raising children and have so many questions. I used to call my mother all the time to ask her what to do about things like bee stings, fevers, coughs, rashes, etc. This book helps you with all of those things and hundreds of more. It gives you practical advise and tells you when it's necessary to seek medical care. This way you are not waisting money on unnecessary doctors visits.

I highly recemmend this book and know that you will love it as much as I do!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST book for a new Mom and Dad! I couldn't live w/out it!, August 17, 2000
I was a typical new Mommy in May of 99. I would panic at the smallest things in my son. This book lists various symptoms of ailments and has a decision tree as to when you must call the doctor. This prevented me from making unnecessary calls to my advice nurse and doctor's office. I LOVE this book and will give a copy to all my friends who are expecting or already have a new baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever, May 26, 2007
I received an early edition of this book when my kids were young, and it got me through some tough times. I've been giving latter editions as gifts to new mothers, who are as pleased with it as I was. What I like best about the book is its flow chart format. For example, "does your child have a fever?" Depending on your answer, it directs you to additional questions that help you decide whether to call the doctor immediately, call for a future appointment, watch for additional symptoms, etc. Very easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best First Aid Book, November 4, 2006
I purchased this for my son to use with his new baby. I had one of the first editions of this book. It helped me through those late night decisions whether to call the Dr. or use the home remedy. I felt relived many times to know that that my child wasn't going to die from the red rash on his skin! I recommend this book to every new parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful, August 26, 2006
I have a two year old son and have turned to this book for almost all of his health issues. I find it invaluable!

The book is laid out in an easy to use format and has very helpful diagrams that indicate when it's appropriate to go to the emergency room, make a doctor's appointment, or use home care, etc. The homecare instructions are fairly comprehensive compared to what I've found during internet searches for the same ailments.

I like this book so much I've since bought five or six as baby shower gifts. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect baby/child instruction book for new parents., July 29, 1999
This book was a baby shower gift and was the nearest thing to an "operating instructions" book that any new parent could receive about understanding the health of your child. The information is clear and concise and laid out in an easy to follow flowchart format. It helps you to understand how concerned you should be about what you see in your child's health - what to do for your child at home, when to alert the doctor, when to make an immediate appointment. There were two situations in my son's first years where this book helped me to realize that what I was seeing in him were serious symptoms - and I got him to the doctor before they had manifested to something worse. It's easy to know for yourself when you should get to a doctor -- it's hard to know that for your child. This book will help you to make the right decisions for your child, which is something that we, as parents, are all striving to do. ... Read more

This revised edition of NOLS Wilderness First Aid reflects the changing field of wilderness medicine. Designed as a field textbook for the NOLS wilderness first aid curriculum, it helps train outdoor leaders to prevent, recognize, and treat common medical problems and to stabilize a severely ill or injured patient for evacuation. A vital resource for outdoor enthusiasts, this book covers fundamental topics in first aid--patient assessment, shock, soft tissue injury, burns, fractures and dislocations, and chest, head, and abdominal injury. It explains how to handle environmental problems posed by heat, cold, water, altitude, and poisonous plants and animals. Also discussed are issues related to expedition medicine as well as leadership, teamwork, and communication for rescue groups. While risk can be minimized through good judgment, skills, and experience, being prepared for emergencies in the wild is an essential component of good outdoor leadership. ... Read more

That's the way this book is written - for the rest of us. It's easy to read, understand and comprehend the various ailments and injuries that are discussed in this book. The information provided also happens to follow the latest Wilderness Medical Society's National Practice Guidelines for Wilderness Emergency Care, which is why so many folks use it as a text book for Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder courses.

    Fantastic (and fun) read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Carry this on long expeditions, August 1, 2007
This is the book I carry on long expeditions. I carry a little tiny book by Tilton on short trips, but on longer trips I like this book because it covers just about everything I know how to manage (I'm a WFR and I'm the local SAR Commander.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, December 31, 2007
This is an excellent reference book for anyone with minimal training, especially in situations where it may be more than the usual <30 min to a well-staffed and stocked hospital.

Those in hurricane, tornado, wildfire, blizzard or earthquake prone areas should keep one of these near their First Aid kit. But they should read it a few times before they do.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Dog Owner, April 8, 2009
This book is a must for any dog owner. It is the same book set given at the Red Cross Pet First Aid class and is the same DVD used in the class. The information is up-to-date and relevant and employs modern first aid techniques akin to human first aid and CPR. The chapters are well-organized and cover everything from mild abrasions to poisoning. The pictures used throughout the book and video on the DVD clearly illustrate the proper procedures to follow. Although not intended as a substitute for veterinary care, this book could make the difference between life and death for your dog in an emergency and I highly recommend it for anyone who comes into contact with dogs on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource, April 7, 2010
This book was suggested by a dog trainer. It's wonderful. All the information you need to know in case of an emergency with your best friend. And great general information on how to prepare and what to have on hand so you'll be ready if something happens to your canine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction but breif, December 23, 2009
I would classify this as a very good introductory book that would enable you to evaluate much more detailed books and information out there. I do like the source of information being the American Red Cross.

This book is only 116 or so pages and less than a half inch thick with a decent number of pictures and a decent DVD. I think if you have not had any training or information this is a good start, if you have other books, like those available at the local library, Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc., on Dog First Aid; Then this may not be for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic stretches with good instruction, April 28, 2003
I picked this up the the other day so I could explore some other stretching options. I like the basic illustrations on the rear of each card that demonstrate how the stretch is to be done. The front of the card contains information on how to do the stretch, how many times you should do it and a tip that might be who the stretch is good for, or a referral to another helpful stretch. You can pick several cards for each stretching session.

The pamphlet that comes inside describes the benefits of stretching, how you should approach stretching and some pre-defined stretching groups of cards for specific lifestyles, i.e: office workers, golfers, etc. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent stretch deck, August 6, 2004
This is an excellent resource for those who would like to set up a customized stretch routine or who have specific areas on which they'd like to work. 50 stretches, one to each card, are shown with technique and benefits listed on the reverse side; also, a fold-out describes specific groups of stretches to use for certain kinds of problems or for workers/athletes with unique needs. Very well done. I've found these cards extremely useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stretches, August 10, 2005
These are great basic stretches. Each is nicely illustrated on one side of a card with written instructions and benefits on the other side. One complaint...the illustrations are white on a gray background. I believe they would be more visible with more contrast...Still would not have kept me from buying or using them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy and very useful, December 28, 2004
I bought this a couple of days ago. Its portable and many of the excercises can be performed simply even at your work desk. I have been doing the neck stretches and they seem to work very well. The illustrations in the back are nice and the directions for the stretches are easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, excellent product, November 4, 2006
The authors of this Stretch Deck really came up with 50 superb stretches, some of which I was unfamilar with. It would seem they have all the bases covered from head to toe. I like these "decks" because I don't always have the patience to go to a fitness class or watch a DVD and if I know and understand many of the exercises I can do them myself at home. Olivia Miller also authors the Yoga Deck which is another superb product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific health guide, July 25, 2007
I absolutely love this deck. It provides a really comprehensive guide to stretching pretty much any muscle group in your body, keeping you flexible and feeling really good. I naturally get very tight muscles, so I've found this to be an invaluable little tool to help me stay looser. It's organized in a very user-friendly way, with an overall body picture to show where in the deck to find stretches for specific muscles. Each stretch then has illustrations and step-by-step instructions on how to do it correctly, and tells what benefit it provides. Not enough people stretch regularly, and it's something that everyone should do to take care of their body, so I highly recommend this.

4-0 out of 5 stars good basic stretches, June 20, 2007

5-0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine, July 9, 2000
This is an excellent condensed version of the full text. It is the only medical field guide I have found that is written for a medical doctor instead of an EMT or paramedic in an austere environment. I am a physician in a military special operations unit and carry it on all deployments, whether in the U.S. or other countries. It is the perfect size to carry with my field gear and trauma pack, and is quick, easy to use, and reccommends very up to date and rapid treatment plans. A must have for all medical professionals practicing in the pre-hospital environment! For medical professionals going to remote locations that are limited by what they can carry on their back, very few texts/guides can be brought along. The solution to this limitation is simple; pack your Sanford, your Pharmacoepia, and THIS BOOK. It is the best text for it's size and weight available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent condensed version of Auerbach's original text, December 10, 1998
If you consider Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine text to be "The Bible of Outdoor Medicine," then this will be a welcomed addition to your reference library. The fieldguide takes many of the most important topics from the original text(such as high altitude emergencies, envenomations, and trauma management) and paraphrases them just enough to be of benefit to both the weekend outdoor warrior and the expedition medic. I particularly was interested in the various ways to utilize common outdoor gear and improvise traction devices for orthopedic injuries. This book is also great in that it is small enough to fit comfortably in your backpack or glove compartment, readily accessable when needed. I highly recommend adding this book to your home or office library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine, July 4, 2008
Great resource. Up-to-date with input from the most well-known names in wilderness medicine. Small enough to carry in a backpack, but packed with helpful info. Includes everything from packing/planning to critical care in the wilderness. Best resource I've ever seen for this material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, July 29, 2008
Great stand alone or companion book to the larger text. Lots of great info. Will travel with it always. Read it on the airplane...the person next to you will keep peeking at it.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, May 28, 2009
After completing my WFR course I wanted the best possible reference to further my knowledge and review to refresh my memory. Every time I grab this book to get advice on a treatment there is either no information or nothing useful. There's info on giving CPR to llamas, but nothing on wound infections, for example. There IS plenty of good stuff, but too many omissions, so I do not recommend this book as a primary reference for wilderness first aid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What Comes After First Aid?, July 26, 2010
I have owned several editions of "Take Care of Yourself" by Dr Fries and Dr Vickery for many years. Even as an RN, this well designed reference has been extremely helpful at home over the years. There were many occasions when I wondered if urgent medical help was needed -- the situation didn't seem life threatening, but maybe the physician needed to evaluate something; what comes after first aid? Does that cut need stitches? Just how serious is that banged head or wrenched joint? Is that small bone actually broken? How long do you treat the fever and malaise with chicken soup and TLC?

This wonderful reference has provided an enormous amount of confidence in dealing with the inevitable vicissitudes of very active children, husband, and even pets over the years. Grown children get a copy when they move out. I continue to appreciate the physical copy, as to date I haven't found anything nearly as simple and well organized on the web, not to mention the accessibility if the power is out for whatever reason.

Oh! Yeah! It certainly saved a LOT of money by almost eliminating unnecessary trips to the ER.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy Book, November 29, 2009
For many common ailments, the question one faces is: What should I do? With its handy decision charts, this book is an invaluable aid in helping one answer this question. Many times, a good home remedy is all that is needed--and this book tells you what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive quick reference for first aid procedures..., August 26, 1999
The guide consists of spiral bound plastic (PVC?) pages that are printed with large easy to read text. The guide measures no more than 3.5 by 4.5 inches so it's handy enough to leave in your first aid kit, or even in a BC pocket (yes, it's waterproof).

The guide uses indexing tabs so that key areas of information are easy to find. The text is divided into two sections. Section one outlines first aid procedures for injured divers, while step two outlines common illnesses and injuries that may afflict divers.

Section one includes: Emergency Assistance Plan, Safety Assessment, Rescue Breathing and CPR, Bleeding, Physical Assessment, Field Neuro Exam, Injured Diver Positioning, and Oxygen First Aid.

Section two includes: Bone and Joint Injuries, Burns, CO Tox, Shock, DCI, Lung Overpressure Injuries, Seafood Poisoning, Heart Attack, Seizures, Spinal Injuries, Squeeze and Barotrauma, Seasickness, O2 Tox, Allergic Reactions, Thermal Injuries, and Marine Animal Injuries.

The guide is very comprehensive. However, don't expect lengthy explanations. The guide provides only an outline of steps with regard to *what to do* in these instances. Which in an emergency is what is really needed. For the explanations, you'll have to refer to another text, or better still take a First Aid course.

All in all, great content, great execution, does exactly what it's designed for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Using the DAN Pocket Guide, July 16, 1999
I bought the DAN Pocket Guide hoping that I would never have to use it. Unfortunately, I was present when a serious diving accident occurred. The guide was handy, because it was attached to my slate (being able to be taken underwater) and it proved invaluable to the first aid providers. It helped define the type and extent of the DCI and reassured the (non-professional) attendants that they were doing everything they should to help the patient. And the patient survived with no lasting ill-effects (after recompression in a chamber).

5-0 out of 5 stars A FANTASTIC SOURCE BOOK FOR ALL DIVERS, April 27, 2000
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE CONCISE, TO THE POINT, AND EXTREMELY PRACTICAL WITH REGARD TO ITS SUBJECT. IT IS POCKET SIZED SO AS NOT TO BE TOO CUMBERSOME, NICELY AND NEATLY INDEXED FOR EASY ACCESS TO THE INFORMATION NEEDED FOR THE SPECIFIC AND IMMEDIATE SITUATION. WHETHER YOU ARE NEW TO DIVING OR AN "OLD SALT", THIS IS A GREAT POCKET REFERENCE TO HAVE ON HAND (OR IN YOUR GEAR BAG)ALL DIVERS SHOULD KEEP A COPY OF THIS BOOK WITH THEM ANYWHERE THEY DIVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all divers..., November 21, 2000
As an EMT I found this book very educational and a great reference. All divers should have this in their dive bag. It is small and very duarable (pages are plastic). My only wish is that by owning it you could qualify for lower life insurance premiums!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money paid., August 5, 2009
This is basically a very expensive simple first aid guide. If this book only cost $5.00 or less it would be worth the money. This book goes in depth about assessment, which is great, but it does not tell you what to do about items that are found abnormal in the assessment. The information in this book is very vague. I would recommend a better book. This book does fit nicely into a log book binder. ... Read more
