Good overview for the beginner, but not enough detail
This book is worth buying if you are after a broad look at dealing with CFS, but it does not really explore the causes of CFS widely enough or in enough detail. It focusses too narrowly on dysbiosis as a cause of CFS, and doesn't explore in any detail toxicity and detoxification, mitochondrial problems, nutritional deficiencies and endocrine problems. This book isn't going to help you cure your CFS, but it has a few interesting chapters. Try Jacob Teitelbaum's book From Fatigued To Fantastic, although this doesn't really mention toxicity at all either. A good overview of toxicity can be found at health-spy dot com. ... Read more

Outdated and only marginally useful
The foreword of Tuning the Brain recommends reading this (and Betrayal by the Brain) first, but I consider it optional and of historical interest only. (Betrayal is still mandatory reading.) All of the immune system stuff turned out to be irrelevant, and you'll have to unlearn some concepts that are heavily modified or even contradicted in the later volumes. It's kind-of like chemistry books written before the discovery of the neutron that theorize about nuclear electrons: wrong, but a fun way to learn about the evolution of our scientific understanding. Highly recommended and Helpful
A scientific but very readable account of CFS.This book covers the main aspects of the features and symptoms of the illness as well as the important role of psychological factors.The book is helpful for those wanting an up-to-date review of CFS and methods of coping with the condition.Although the book my not be popular with those with an investment in a biomedical explanation of CFS those with a broader view will find this book of considerable value. Highly recommended.

Not at all what I was expecting!
Caution:This book is not based on medical facts.The premise is that channeling and a spirit guide helped her get well.The first 23 pages are essentially just mere lists of foods to eat, foods not to eat, symptoms of CFS and sick building syndrome, not in prose fashion, but in actual lists.No new information there from what is general knowledge when a person gets CFS.

On a personal note, being a Christian, I wish I'd have known that this was a book based on occult teachings (channeling spirits).I would not have spent my money on it to support it at all.That's what I get for buying a pig in a poke.At a bookstore, I'd have spotted it right off because of the references it has in the back.

Perhaps the author (who I think is probably also the one who published it) should at least fill in the information about the book so people know what they are buying.Or submit a copy of the book to Amazon.com so they can scan it and people can check it out before buying it.I feel a bit hoodwinked on this one. ... WOW
I bought the book because I was dealing with a health problem.I did not know what to expect but was certainly pleasantly surprised.Just reading about how the authors struggled with a major illness and were able to overcome it was an inspiration.Half way through the book I stopped and ordered three additional books and had them sent to friends and relatives who are dealing with health problems. I can not imagine anyone who is facing health problems not being inspired by this book.If they are not inspired or encouraged, perhaps they are not discouraged
enough to have an open mind.I truly believe that we do not have to know how something works in order to benefit from trying it.I believe that this books offers HOPE.

Not a self-help book, but the appendices are good
Others have pointed out the shortcomings of this book... the long narrative, the lack of solid how-to advice, the hodge-podge of techniques mentioned but not thoroughly explained. Yet there are some good things if you read it with a grain of salt and don't get bogged down.

The authors point out the importance of attitude but it's their examples of misguided attitudes in the first part of the book that make their point. They knew they were very sensitive to chemicals and mold and yet stayed in toxic environments and then were really really upset when they had severe reactions. This is understandable at first but when they keep doing this the reader gets a bit impatient. Then they seek out supernatural advice through mediums and such and also try bodywork and kineseology and they eventually improve. Yet it's not clear exactly what cured them, or even how much better they are. So the book is a little frustrating.

There is a series of appendices which I actually found useful. If you are looking for help with MCS/EI, read Pam Gibson's reports on what helps and does not help, but consider getting a copy of this book at the library, or buy a used copy. Skim through the text, keeping an open mind about the channeled guidance - it may or may not have happened exactly the way they understood it, but they were there and advice was coming from somewhere, so I can accept that something was happening and eventually it was helpful. Anyway, the appendices are worth looking over.

They don't even have a clue! This is a very old - outdated book. It needs to be out of print!

Opened My Mind
This book helped me to look at my illness in a new way.Although parts of the authors' story were a bit longwinded, I found it helpful to read about their process in detail.I could feel (and relate to) how consumed they were by trying to create a "safe" environment in the external world- and how this obsession did little to improve their health.I felt encouraged as they discovered new ways of relating to EI and how they were transformed by their intense inner work.

I had never heard of "channeling" and I wasn't really into energy healing when I first read this book. I benefitted from its basic message nonetheless.I still refer back to it, especially Appendix IV which is a summary of the authors' observations on healing CFS/EI.As the authors note, not everyone has to do what they did to heal the illness, but if you have tried "everything" are stuck, this book could be helpful to you.

If this book is too "woo-woo" for your taste (and even if it isn't), I recommend "Healing Environmental Illness from Within" by Marcia Murphy.It is the story of woman who wholeheartedly tried the more conventional treatments for EI, but failed to break through it until she included mind & spirit in her healing process.

Disappointing but interesting
As a longtime CFS and EI sufferer, I couldn't wait to get this book. I'm now very open to "channels" and messages from angels or highly evolved beings, and also the incredible helpfulness of energy medicine in the very necessary changing of beliefs, letting go of emotions, as well as the physical avoidance of toxins (at least in the healing stages) and attention to diet, allergies, etc. Although I'm almost 100% healed and even starting a new business at age 52, I was enticed by reviews that this book would uncover the mental and emotional reasons people get EI and CFS at this time and place.

I eagerly went to bed each night to read another few chapters, but as each night went on, I was anxious for the story part to be over (it was interesting and validating, even though each EI sufferer is affected quite differently) and the "answer" part to begin. I was disappointed to say the least. Any evolved being who would admonish a human and cause them to suffer and cry with guilt, rage, shame, etc. is NOT a very evolved being!

This being talked in circles that were very hard to follow, and the authors blamed themselves for not getting it! Any entity from the Light is going to feel like a loving parent and bathe them in higher vibrations that feel good, not bad, while releasing the negative energy so many of us have. We need positive loving messages, not more depression!The insights I receive from Highly evolved souls and entities are always helpful and make me feel better; that's how I differentiate them from messages from the "dark side" whether that's a religious belief or your own shadow side.

I don't know what treatments the authors use for people who visit them (another disappointment with the book), but they hinted at NAET, which does have value. Allergies (or more accurately, energy toxins) to everything from foods, inhalants, everyday products, almost ANYTHING) can have a huge impact on the immune system, and in my case, my moods and muscles. NAET neutralizes these substances to much relief, but I found early on that I was so sick, I couldn't hold the treatments, even though I did them for 2 years.

It wasn't until I met the folks at Quantum Techniques (www.quantumtechniques.com) that I was able to release the viruses, bacteria, past emotional traumas, beliefs- all kinds of things that didn't seem at the time to be connected to EI, TOTALLY PAINLESSLY. It's been an amazing journey, though not cheap. I also recommend Machaelle Small Wright's MAP book- Medical Assistance Program from beings of the Light who are there to help humans heal. Somewhat dated, but still a valuable compilation
This slim paperback represents a survey of the most significant research compiled on CFS during the late 1990s as well as research reviews and clinical articles on the causes and mechanisms of the disease. Although the information is somewhat dated, the research approach during this decade was more varied and wide-ranging than research performed in subsequent years, making this book an essential tool for anyone interested in serious medical investigations of CFS.

The first section, written by Rosamund Vallings, is a report on the Second World Congress on CFS and Related Disorders, held in Brussels in September 1999. This is, by far, the most valuable section of the volume as it summarizes the bulk of the research performed over the previous decade. All of the major figures in CFS research were present: Neil McGregor, Byron Hyde, G. Moorkens, and Tim Roberts, who spoke on the biochemistry of the illness, as well as Kuratsune and Dunstan, who spoke about cortisol production, endocrine function, cytokine activity and acetylcarnitine metabolism. Suhadolnik and De Meirleir presented papers on RNase L pathway disruptions in CFS, an area of investigation which holds enormous potential for developing a definitive test for CFS. Reports on clinical immunology and concurrent allergy were made by Brostoff, Hyde, Lambrecht and Regland. Garth Nicolson discussed the presence of mycoplasma infections in CFS and Gulf War veterans, and proposed a course of antibiotic treatment which has been successful in this subgroup. Moorkens and his team reported on pituitary function, noting a significant decrease of growth hormone in CFS patients. Bastien, Nix, Hyde and Cabane reported on clinical findings, including motor abnormalities, memory impairment, altered perception, and reduced exercise capacity. Treatment discussions centered largely around Ampligen, an immune modulator, which was about to enter Phase III trials.

The second and third sections of this volume were devoted, respectively, to research and clinical reports:

1) Role of Mycoplasmal Infection in Fatigue Illnesses: Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Syndrome, Gulf War Illness and Rheumatoid Arthritis by G. Nicolson et al. Nicolson presents compelling evidence of simultaneous infection with mycoplasma infections, but whether the infection is opportunistic or causative is something that remains to be proven. Nicolson's assertions that CFS and GWS symptoms can be reversed through long-term antibiotic therapy have been effective in only a small number of cases. However, for those patients in whom the mycoplasmal infection is causative, antibiotics may be highly beneficial.

2) Human Herpes Virus 6 Infection in Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Its Relationship to Activation-Induced Cell Death, by A. Cocchetto et al. HHV-6 has long been associated with CFS, and has been implicated in increased apoptosis observed in CFS patients. HHV-6 is a highly destructive virus whose proliferation in immunocompromised patients has long been documented as the basis for a wide range of symptoms. The authors propose that immune modulators such as NDGA and N-acetyl cysteine might be useful for downregulating the harmful effects of HHV-6 proliferation.

3) Neurological Dysfunction in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome by A Chaudhuri et al. This article presents a useful summary of some of the more significant neurological effects of CFS: vertigo, movement disorders, mental and physical fatigue, sleep disorder, sensory symptoms, autonomic symptoms, and neuroendocrine abnormalities, as well as proposing a mechanism for neurological dysfunction. Chaudhuri also discusses the history of CFS, from epidemic form to sporadic outbreaks. While the claim that evidence for CFS has been found on an ancient Egyptian papyrus must be taken with a grain (or, perhaps, a pound) of salt, there is substantial evidence for the more recent epidemic form.

4) Immunology of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome by Patarco-Montera et al. This is a concise and valuable review of the literature on immune system abnormalities found in CFS grouped according to type. The authors propose that the interplay of cytokine activation, poor cellular function and pro-inflammatory cytokines play an important role in the waxing and waning pattern of CFS symptoms.

5) The Biorhythm of Fatigue in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, by Carbane et al. This study failed to show any consistent patterns of fatigue in CFS patients.

6) Divalent Cations, Hormones, Psyche and Soma: Four Case Reports by Hock. Four patients with psychiatric diagnoses of depression, secondary depression, CFS and somatoform disorder were tested for vitamin D deficiencies caused by calcium depletion. All four patients were successfully treated with vitamin D and trace minerals. While this study is far from conclusive it reveals that psychiatric diagnoses can hide underlying biological disorders.

7) Common Clinical and Biological Windows on CFS and Rickettsial Diseases, by Jadin. Rickettsial diseases, such as Lyme disease, were found to be underlying causes of 500 patients previously diagnosed with CFS, FM, MS, depression, heart disease, and psychosis. After treatment with tetracyline symptoms were reversed. While this was a fascinating study, it left many questions unanswered. How were the original diagnoses made? While the idea that CFS may be caused by bacterial infections, the study does not explore the possibility that the overlap in diagnoses in these cases may have been due to sheer medical incompetence.

8) Role of Rickettsiae and Chlamydiae in the Psychopathology of CFS Patients, by Bottero. This was an open study conducted by Bottero after he observed that ALL of his CFS patients tested positive for bacterial infections. An impressive 78.5% of Bottero's 98 CFS patients improved significantly after treatment with antibiotics. A second smaller group, composed of patients diagnosed with ADHD, schizophrenia and autism also showed a similar rate of improvement.

9) Chronic Psychopathologies Associated with Persistant Rickettesiae and/or Similar Germs (Chlamydiae) Phillipe Bottero. Due to the long survival of rickettsiae in reticuloendothelial tissues and vascular linings, persistent infection may result in vascular encephalitis, which, in turn, producesnumerous psychiatric symptoms. Sixty patients with psychiatric diagnoses, including schizophrenia, delerium, bi-polar disorder, and depression tested positive for the presence of Rickettsial and Chlamydial infections. Fifty-five of the sixty cases were treated with good to excellent results. It is a pity this article was so poorly written, because it clearly demonstrates how psychiatric opinions have superceded medical diagnoses. If Bottero could cure his group of "schizophrenics" with tetracycline, just imagine how many other patients with treatable organic illnesses have been subjected to years of harmful psychoactive drugs, useless therapy and destructive psychiatric interventions because they were dismissed as "mentally ill"? ...
