This is the clear message given by Adrain Millen, Director of Dental Services of the Northern Health and Social Services Board. Mouth Cancer Awareness Week starts on Monday 12 November with the aim of informing more people about how to help prevent the disease. Around 100 people in Northern Ireland develop mouth cancer every year but if symptoms are spotted early and treated rapidly, patients have a good chance of making a full recovery. Mouth cancer can appear in deferent forms and can affect all parts of the mouth, tongue, and lips. Most often, cancer appears as a painless ulcer that does not clear up but sometimes a white or red patch in the mouth may develop into cancer. It is important to visit your dentist if these areas do not heal within two weeks. If your dentist suspects signs of cancer, you will be referred to a consultant who will carry out the necessary examinations. In Northern Ireland, people who develop mouth cancer receive their treatment under the guidance of consultant oral and maxillo-facial surgeons.

Mutation of the p53 gene, a tumor suppressor gene that normally helps to prevent the formation and growth of cancers, is the most common cancer-related genetic mutation. Many independent mutations in different genes are required for a cell to become a cancer cell. Results published in the March 1995 issue of Archives of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery suggest older people may develop cancer because they accumulate genetic mutations that usually occur only in people who have been exposed to carcinogens. The aging process itself may increase the tendency for certain older people to develop cancer, the researchers say. In support of this view, the study found that older patients who develop cancers besides those in the head and neck were more likely than their younger counterparts to get skin and prostate cancers as well. Both of these cancers are commonly associated with old age. In contrast, when middle-aged people developed other cancers, they were more likely to have lung and colon cancers. These cancers are strongly associated with smoking, drinking and mutations in the p53 gene.
