Cancers Hodgkin's Disease Audio File Hodgkin's disease (or Hodgkin's lymphoma) is a cancer of the lymph system, which is part of the body's immune system. In adults, Hodgkin's disease most often occurs people in their 20s, those over age 55 and people with AIDS. In children, Hodgkin's disease rarely occurs to those under age 5. It is more common in males than females. The cause of Hodgkin's disease is unknown, although some experts suspect a virus may be associated with its development. Hodgkin's disease can start in almost any part of the body and can spread to almost any organ or tissue, including the bone marrow (the spongy tissue inside the large bones that makes blood cells). The lymph system is a network that is made up of thin tubes that branch, like blood vessels, into all parts of the body. This network carries lymph, a colorless fluid containing white blood cells called lymphocytes. Along the network are groups of small, bean-shaped organs called lymph nodes. Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the underarm, pelvis, neck, chest and abdomen. Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting cells. The lymph system also includes the spleen (an organ in the abdomen that makes lymphocytes), the thymus (a small organ beneath the breastbone) and the tonsils (lymph tissue in the throat). The most common symptoms of Hodgkin's disease include painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the upper part of the body, fever, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss and itchy skin.

Extractions: Last week she told me that she had some blood work done and her drs. were concerned about it. I went by last Sunday with a card for her with an encouraging scripture in it. She had to get some tests done this week to determine what was wrong with her blood. After I gave her the card I told her to stay in touch with me. I didn't hear from her. Then yesterday I decided to call her. I had been unsure what to do. I mean she knew I was concerned because I came over and told her and gave her the card. I did ask her to call me. I just assumed that she was fine but yesterday thought I should just call and make sure. I was really shocked when she told me she had Hodgkins disease. Because we really don't know each other that well I really am unsure how to act. I know exactly what I would do for a friend but not sure what to do with a neighbor who is just becoming a friend. I do not know if she is a Christian or not. She didn't comment on my card or the scripture verse or anything so I didn't get any feedback.

Most types of cancer cells form a lump or mass called a tumor. Cells from the tumor can break away and travel to other parts of the body. There they can continue to grow. This spreading process is called metastasis . When cancer spreads, it is still named after the part of the body where it started. For example, if breast cancer spreads to the lungs, it is still breast cancer, not lung cancer. Another word for cancerous is malignant. So a cancerous tumor is called malignant. But not all tumors are cancer. A tumor that is not cancer is called benign. Benign tumors do not grow and spread the way cancer does. They are usually not a threat to life. A few cancers, such as blood cancers (leukemia), do not form a tumor. What Is Hodgkin's Disease? Hodgkin's disease (also called Hodgkin's lymphoma) is a type of cancer that starts in lymphatic tissue. Lymphatic tissue includes the lymph nodes and other organs that are part of the body's system that forms blood and protects against germs.

This process is called staging and it is used to help the doctor plan the patient's treatment. The doctor may determine the stage of the disease by conducting a thorough examination that may include blood tests and different kinds of x-rays. This type of staging is called clinical staging. In some cases, the doctor may need to do an operation called a laparotomy to determine the stage of the cancer. During this operation, the doctor cuts into the abdomen and carefully looks at the organs inside to see if they contain cancer. The doctor will cut out (biopsy) small pieces of tissue during the operation and look at them under a microscope to see whether they contain cancer. This type of staging is called pathologic staging. Pathologic staging is usually done only when it is needed to help the doctor plan treatment. Each stage of Hodgkin's disease is broken down into two substages (A and B) based on symptoms. The B stage always indicates the presence of certain symptoms: loss of more than 10 percent of body weight in the previous 6 months, fever without any known cause other than Hodgkin's disease, and night sweats that leave the body soaked.
