The Men Behind the Women
The guys who should get Oscars this year. he race for the Oscar in the Best Actress category seems to be narrowing to two nominees, both of whom are previous winners. Judi Dench, who's up this year for Iris , won three years ago for her short, sharp shock of a performance as Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love . Sissy Spacek, who took the trophy home 19 years ago for her ravishing job of inhabiting Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner's Daughter , is this year's Oscar frontrunner for In the Bedroom
Both actresses deliver powerful work. Dench shows us in great detail how the 78-year-old Iris Murdoch slipped quickly and irreversibly into Alzheimer's. Spacek plays a precise, angry woman who has to live through the murder of her own son and the possibility that his killer is going to get away with it. But what's really striking is that both of these showy performances, which have sucked up most of the critical air, are actually supporting roles. The real subjects of these movies are the husbands of the characters the two women play. And it's the lesser-known and less-praised male actors in them who give the really heart-rending and transfiguring performances.

When an Oscar Was an Oscar
The Academy Awards are not what they once were. he Academy Awards were once so important to me that I memorized them, the way other boys memorized sports statistics. Long before the Internet made storing such factoids in the brain unnecessary, I was a walking Oscar search engine. I never saw The Razor's Edge or National Velvet , but I knew that Anne Baxter and Anne Revere won Oscars in the category of Best Supporting Actress for them Greer Garson's legendarily endless acceptance speech for Mrs. Miniver in 1943? It went on for almost six minutes, though listeners said it lasted more than an hour. And how about Louise Rainer, the "Viennese teardrop," who did the most amazing vanishing act in Hollywood history? She won successive Best Actress statuettes for The Great Ziegfeld and The Good Earth in 1936 and 1937 — a feat duplicated only by Katherine Hepburn 30 years later — and then did almost nothing until she played a dual role on a 1983 episode of "The Love Boat."

topic: Republican House Majority and Election 2000 EVOTE.COM: Ok, we're ready to start our discussion about the Republican House campaigns with Mr. Wilkinson. Welcome to evote.com Mr. Wilkinson... Jim Wilkinson: Thank you for having me. I believe this is the first election of the new economy... and the fact that we have online chats like this, I think proves that. EVOTE.COM: Let's start off with some info about the NRCC itself. What does the organization do for the various Republican House candidates? Jim Wilkinson: The NRCC exists to win elections for House incumbents and House challengers... Our job is to elect Republicans to the House it's that simple. EVOTE.COM: Is there a particular message that unites the GOP House candidates in 2000? What themes will they be emphasizing the most this fall? Jim Wilkinson: One issue we've seen that is on the minds of voters is trust in government. We saw this back in the primaries when McCain and Bush gave us so much turnout, and we're seeing that resonate at the congressional level so trust in government is an important issue.... Jim Wilkinson: The main issue out there is education.

Dr J.G. Hoggett Jim Hoggett's research interests are on the mechanism and regulation of transcription. There are currently two related research areas. Protein-protein recognition in the assembly and activation of transcription complexes
Research in this area is supported by The Wellcome Trust and is carried out in collaboration with Professor Martin Buck at Imperial College and Professor Tony Wilkinson in the Department of Chemistry at York. The aims of this work are to study the assembly of the basal transcription apparatus using the bacterial sigma-N system, and to carry out thematically related studies of protein-protein interactions in allied systems. The sigma-N system is unusal for a prokaryotic system in that it has an absolute requirement for upstream activators, operating by mechanisms that resemble those of eukaryotic transcription. The advantage of the sigma-N system is its relative simplicity compared with that of higher organisms. Our aim is to exploit a range of biochemical and biophysical techniques to shed light on how the basal apparatus assembles, and how the participation of upstream activators such as the PspF protein leads to productive transcription.
