Wilkins, John (1614-72)
Brother-in-law of Oliver Cromwell and Oxford graduate who became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and eventually Bishop of Chester. Wilkins was among the new wave of thinkers who voiced freely their opinions on the implications of the Copernican Revolution . As a young author he was one of several men, including Johannes Kepler , who, following Galileo 's telescopic observations, were inspired to speculate about the possibility of lunar life and of traveling to the Moon (see Moon, voyages to ). He expounded upon the former in the first edition of his book The Discovery of a World in the Moone, or, A Discourse Tending to Prove That 'Tis Probable There May Be Another Habitable World in That Planet published anonymously in 1638. Two years later, having read Francis Godwin 's contemporaneous fantasy about a lunar journey, he was encouraged to set down his own thoughts on such a possibility in the third edition of The Discovery pluralism . John Wilkins 's father was Walter Wilkins, a goldsmith from Oxford. In [6] Aubrey describes Walter Wilkins as:- ... a very ingenious man with a very mechanical head. He was much for trying of experiments, and his head ran much upon the perpetual motion. Walter Wilkins married Jane Dod, the daughter of the Puritan minister John Dod, and John was one of their four children. Walter Wilkins died in 1625 while John was still a boy and Jane remarried. John's stepfather then became Francis Pope and a son of this marriage, Walter Pope, remained a close friend of John Wilkins throughout his life. John's early education is described in [4] in the following way:- He was taught his Latin and Greek by Edward Sylvester, a noted Grecian, who kept a Private School in the Parish of All Saints in Oxford: His Proficiency was such, that at Thirteen Years of Age he entered a Student in New-Inn, in Easter-Term . He made no long stay there, but was removed to Magdalen Hall, ... and there he took his Degree in Arts in October

MAJ. JOHN C. WILKINS
The first battle casualty of the 20th. FG during the war, Portland, Oregon's John C. Wilkins was assigned to the 79th.FS on 10 June, 1943. Two days later he assumed the duties of Group Deputy Commander and, by 1 October was promoted to the rank of Major.
On 3 Novemeber the 20th. FG sent several of their most senior pilots (Wilkins, Cumming, Yaryan, Gatterdam , Blanton, Fall, Ott, Graham , Hanzo, Gall, Mednick, Nichols , Snow, Lobinger, Meyer and Reihmer ), along with the necesary ground personnel and 10 of the 16 assigned P-38s, to Nuthampsted - home of the 55th.FG. Maj. Wilkins was placed in charge of this detachment.
The then fledgling 20th.FG had assigned these men to fly along side the 55th.FG, the only other 8th.AF Fighter Group to be equipped with P-38s at the time, so that the young pilots could gain some much needed combat experience. While the 55th.FG had arrived in the ETO after the 20th.FG but because of the experience of their pilots they were assigned P-38s ahead of the 20th. (At this time there was a serious shortage of the aircraft for the 20th. and flight time was hard to get.)
On 5 November the 55th.FG, along with the detachment from the 20thFG, were directed to rendezvous with B-24s that had been dispatched to attack Gelsenkirchen and Munster, escort said bombers to Munster and then back to the North Sea. Due to various equipment malfunctions and engine failures all of the nine pilots of the 20th. were forced to turn back and head home.

Background note:
West Pointer John Darragh Wilkins was a career army officer with fifteen years of service behind him when the Civil War broke out. Having already received a commendation for gallant and meritorious conduct at the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco during the Mexican War, Wilkins had the reasonable expectation of personal advancement, and when he received a promotion from Adjutant to Captain of the 3rd Infantry in April, 1861, his notions might have seemed confirmed. Like many ambitious officers in the regular army, Wilkins was skeptical about the value of volunteer troops, and by the early months of 1862, his attitudes began to sour as he felt increasingly frustrated with the poor performance of the non-professionals in combat, the self-seeking leadership in the military, and the army's general ineffectiveness. Yet gnawing away even more at Wilkins' morale was his sense that while his class-mates from West Point and other officers rose through the ranks with ease, he remained mired in the sargassum of a captaincy. He moaned about having become the only field officer in his regiment, and was thus acting commander, while promotion still managed to elude him.

Bishop John Wilkins
John Wilkins chaired the founding meeting of the Royal Society and was its first secretary. He was the only person to have been head of a college in both Cambridge and Oxford. He was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge but was deposed at the Restoration in 1660: he had married Oliver Cromwell's sister, and this did not endear him to returning royalty. He had previously been Warden of Wadham College, Oxford He is of interest to cryptographers because he wrote a book called `Mercury, or the Secret and Swift Messenger', which is described in David Kahn's history `The Codebreakers' as `the first book in English on cryptography'. It is much more than that: it is a treatise on the state of the art in seventeenth century telegraphy. Wilkins describes a number of optical and acoustic techniques. He explains how the letters of the alphabet can be represented as five bits each and then transmitted using any available means - such as two different bells, or a musket shot for `0' and a cannon shot for `1'. He goes on to what may be the first systematic treatment of coding in different number bases (binary and ternary). This technology evolved into the chains of semaphore stations used by both Britain and France in the Napoleonic wars, and they in turn stimulated the development of the electric telegraph in the mid-nineteenth century. He also speculates on whether a universal language could be constructed; this inspired Roget's thesaurus, and (much later) Esperanto. In passing, Wilkins explains how to protect telegraph messages against being understood by hostile observers. As well as showing how to break simple substitution ciphers, and introducing various geometrical enciphering schemes, he proposes the use of nulls to make cryptanalysis harder. He not only launches the subject of cryptology into the English literature, but introduces the words `cryptographia' and `cryptologia' to the English language. The book ends with two pages on cryptography policy that are still pertinent today. His conclusion is that `If all those useful Inventions that are liable to abuse, should therefore be concealed, there is not any Art or Science which might be lawfully profest'.
