Solving Fermat: Andrew Wiles
Andrew Wiles devoted much of his entire career to proving Fermat's Last Theorem, the world's most famous mathematical problem. In 1993, he made front-page headlines when he announced a proof of the problem, but this was not the end of the story; an error in his calculation jeopardized his life's work. Andrew Wiles spoke to NOVA and described how he came to terms with the mistake, and eventually went on to achieve his life's ambition.

Many great scientific discoveries are the result of obsession, but in your case that obsession has held you since you were a child.
ANDREW WILES: I grew up in Cambridge in England, and my love of mathematics dates from those early childhood days. I loved doing problems in school. I'd take them home and make up new ones of my own. But the best problem I ever found, I found in my local public library. I was just browsing through the section of math books and I found this one book, which was all about one particular problem Fermat's Last Theorem. This problem had been unsolved by mathematicians for 300 years. It looked so simple, and yet all the great mathematicians in history couldn't solve it. Here was a problem, that I, a ten year old, could understand and I knew from that moment that I would never let it go. I had to solve it.

Andrew J. Wiles Awarded the "IMU Silver Plaque"
The British mathematician Andrew J. Wiles was honored with the "IMU silver plaque" of the International Mathematical Union. The chairman of the Fields Medals Committee, Yuri Manin, presented him with this award during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin. During the Congress, which is held every four years, four Fields Medals are awarded to outstanding mathematicians under the age of forty. In view of their significance the Fields medals are often dubbed the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics." Four years ago, Andrew J. Wiles was a hot favorite for an award, since in 1993 he had presented a proof of Fermat's Last Theorem one of the most famous mathematical puzzles, which had remained unsolved for more than 350 years. Shortly afterwards, however, colleagues found a gap in the proof, which Wiles was only able to close up a year later. But this was too late for the Fields Medal, because Wiles was then over the age limit of forty. With its special tribute, the International Mathematical Union acknowledged Andrew J.     Andrew Wiles 's interest in Fermat's Last Theorem began at a young age. He said:- ... I was a ten year old and one day I happened to be looking in my local public library and I found a book on maths and it told a bit about the history of this problem and I, a ten year old, could understand it. From that moment I tried to solve it myself, it was such a challenge, such a beautiful problem, this problem was Fermat's Last Theorem. In 1971, Wiles entered Merton College, Oxford, graduating with a B.A. in 1974. He then entered Clare College, Cambridge to study for his doctorate. His Ph.D. supervisor at Cambridge was John Coates who said:- I have been very fortunate to have had Andrew as a student. Even as a research student he was a wonderful person to work with, he had very deep ideas then and it was always clear he was a mathematician who would do great things. Wiles did not work on Fermat's Last Theorem for his doctorate. He said:-

    BIRCH AND SWINNERTON-DYER CONJECTURE
    Mathematicians have always been fascinated by the problem of describing all solutions in whole numbers x,y,z to algebraic equations like x + y = z Euclid gave the complete solution for that equation, but for more complicated equations this becomes extremely difficult. Indeed, in 1970 Yu. V. Matiyasevich showed that Hilbert's tenth problem is unsolvable, i.e., there is no general method for determining when such equations have a solution in whole numbers. But in special cases one can hope to say something. When the solutions are the points of an abelian variety, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture asserts that the size of the group of rational points is related to the behavior of an associated zeta function z (s) near the point s=1. In particular this amazing conjecture asserts that if z (1) is equal to 0, then there are an infinite number of rational points (solutions), and conversely, if z (1) is not equal to 0, then there is only a finite number of such points.

    On June 23, 1993, Andrew Wiles announced to his colleagues at a mathematics conference in Cambridge, England that he had proven Fermat's Last Theorem. The Fields, considered the highest honor in mathematics, is awarded only every four years and only to mathematicians age 40 or younger. (There is no Nobel Prize in mathematics.) Wiles, now 45, was just past 40 when he completed his final proof solving Fermat's problem; thus, the IMU found another way to honor his achievement.     We will model the process from Dr. Sarah's What is a Mathematician? for Andrew Wiles and Fermat's Last Theorem. Read through the sheet, and take notes while you are watching the videos.
    Philosophy
    We have spent most of the semester (9 out of 14 weeks) learning useful material that is applicable to real-life situations. We spent so much time on these topics because it is important to learn useful and applicable ideas. Our motto during financial mathematics and statistics ( from the creative inquiry -lessons for life list) was to "understand issues deeply, especially those ideas which seem simple". In fact, up until this point in the class, you may have already seen some (or all) of the mathematics that we have been doing. All of the material that we have covered is currently being covered (at a much slower pace and at a surface level instead of the level of depth that we covered) in North Carolina schools in middle school through high school.
    Yet, this is a core mathematics course. In a core English course, you would not expect to spend the entire semester on grammar or spelling, no matter how useful or applicable. Similarly, in a core music course, you would not expect to spend the entire semester learning how to read music notes, and in a core art appreciation course, you would not expect to spend your time mixing paints.
